231 health facilities in Masvingo

By Staff Reporter

Reports from government have revealed that Masvingo Province is now home to 231 health facilities, a move that is meant to improve health service delivery in the province and nationwide.
This was revealed by Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa at a press discussion organised by TellZim in Masvingo recently where he unpacked the state of the province in the health sector.
“Masvingo Province now has 231 health facilities. This could be disaggregated like 13 secondary health facilities, seven being mission hospitals, six government, three private. 12 rural hospitals, 14 mission clinics, 71 government clinics and 104 council clinics,” said Dr Pazvakavambwa.
Dr Pazvakavambwa said the increase on construction of health facilities subsequently had an effect on reducing the walking distance which has drastically reduced from an average of 20km to about 8km.
“The fact that these have been increased means there is an effect on the walking distances. The walking distance has been reduced remarkably in most cases five to eight kilometres yet before it was around 20km,” said Dr Pazvakavambwa.
On drug availability, the province is still lagging behind with a staggering average of 55-57 percent.
Women from the province and the rest of the nation have been complaining over walking long distances, especially during pregnancy to access health facilities which has resulted in some women in rural areas to opt for backyard maternity homes which has its own fair share of problems.
Villagers from Mushandike, Gwengavi and Makasi in Masvingo rural have raised concerns over access to health facilities citing that they had to travel for at least 10km to get a clinic which is disheartening as sometimes they only get prescription with no medications available at the clinics.

MoHCC capacitates village health workers to treat minor diseases

By Meditation Mposi

The Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) has empowered Village Health Workers (VHW) to treat common diseases in their villages as they can now access medicines for treating such.
Speaking during a Press Club Discussion organized by TellZim in Masvingo on March 5, Provincial Health Services Administrator Samson Nyoni who was representing Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Amadeus Shamu said the move was meant to assist in managing the spread of diseases from local level.
“We have increased the strength of village health workers, some have been given access to drugs in terms of treating minor illnesses like malaria enabling them to provide timely and effective primary health care.
“VHWs can now manage a range of minor health conditions reducing the need for patients to travel to health facilities as these live in communities. Where there is need, a person has to walk from where they stay to a nearby facility so that it is accessible and cost effective. Once it has been detected that they need higher level services that’s where they can access a Rural or a District Hospital,” said Nyoni.
Nyoni also revealed that government had made efforts to reduce the average walking distance of patients to 8km.
“The average walking distance for patients is now 8km but previously, patients would walk an average of 20km to access health facilities,” said Nyoni.
Masvingo province now has 231 health facilities.
Nyoni also said health facilities were accessed in hierarchy and patients had to follow those stages to get services.
“When there is need for higher services that is when they can access rural hospitals, district hospitals and provincial hospitals because the rural hospitals have become the referral center for the clinics.
“At the Provincial Hospital we have ambulances that are ready to go to Bulawayo and Harare and where there is need for that person to be airlifted as far as from Chikombedzi that is when we call for assistance,” said Nyoni.

Zaka farmers lose crops to wild animals

By Tatiana Mhararira

Farmers in ward 24, Chief Bota area around Mushungwa Mountain in Zaka are facing a triple threat to their crops, as wild animals, excessive rainfall, and the fall army worm converge to wreak havoc on their livelihoods.
Baboons and wild pigs are roaming the area, destroying crops and keeping farmers on high alert day and night. The situation becomes even more perilous at night, as those who guard their fields risk encountering hyenas that also roam the area.
The wildlife menace has added to the woes of farmers in low-lying areas, who were already struggling with excessive rainfall that threatened to destroy their crops.
Headman Nheya born Runesu Cosmas Sananguro said the problem of wild animals invading fields had been a challenge every year in the area for years now.
“The problem keeps persisting each year and it is like these wild animals have got a calendar. Every year around this time, they start coming to our fields in large numbers feasting on our maize and other crops every chance they get.
He said after harvesting the wild pig menace will be gone but the baboons will invade homes taking chickens and other foodstuffs they can get hold of.
“After harvesting, the baboons come in troops taking young goats, chickens and any other poultry. They are not scared of people and that leaves us wondering if they are mere baboons,” said Sananguro.
He said locals had resorted to guarding fields day and night, a development that was unbearable to many as some do not have the manpower.
“The situation has become so dire that some farmers have resorted to safeguarding their fields at night, armed with torches and sticks. We cannot sleep at night as we are constantly on the lookout for these troublesome animals,” said Sananguro.
Local Councillor Zivanai Zvada told TellZim News that he had written a letter to the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) among other stakeholders but no action had been taken.
“If the situation continues like this then the villagers will be doomed. The animals are so many and if no action is taken, villagers will be left without food. I have written to the local CPU and council but no action has been taken so far and I am worried as a councillor,” said Zvada.
Another villager Seraphin Chikake told TellZim News the baboon troops travel along in large numbers and so far they have lost a bigger part of their crops.
“Baboons move in large troops and approximately these baboons have 4 groups with each group having about 60 baboons and if 30 baboons get into the field after 10 minutes there will be a great loss in the field that is during the day.
“Just after sunset wild pigs will start eating in the fields from around 1900 hours to 0400 hours in the morning. If one wants to travel they have to leave home early morning around 0500hours.We are already sleeping in the fields because the wild pigs move in groups of five,” said Chikake.
He said they were appealing for assistance to drive away the animals.
“We are seeking assistance so that these animals maybe chased away.
so that we get rest and we can look forward to better harvests,” he added.
The impact of baboons and wild pigs on the farmers’ livelihoods cannot be overstated. Many have reported significant losses.
The villages that have been affected by these baboons are Nheya, Zvada Chibwowa, Chikono Pikiti, Denhere, Kusara, Zvinavakobvu, Mahove and Mujabuki.

… busted with US$25K worth of cough syrup

By Beverly Bizeki

A cunning drug smuggling syndicate of four men was busted with a massive shipment of cough syrup worth $25 000 from South Africa with fake funeral documents and an empty coffin.

Their plan was foiled by alert police at roadblock on March 6 at the 110km peg along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Highway.

The suspects, identified as Charles Bhebhe (the driver), James Sibanda, Nevson Nhamo, and Sifelane Nkiwane, appeared before Masvingo Magistrate Arafat Khozanai on March 8 where Bhebhe pleaded guilty and exonerated his co-accused.

The other three denied the charges and they were released while Bhebhe was remanded in custody and is expected to appear in court today (March 10) for continuation of trial.

The four were traveling in a white commuter omnibus towing a trailer branded with Clairmont Funeral Parlour stickers. When stopped at the police checkpoint, they presented a fake burial order in an attempt to avoid a search.

However, when officers inspected the trailer, they found an empty coffin. A thorough search of the vehicle revealed large quantities of cough syrups stashed under the seats and some under the empty coffin.

The recovered drugs included 2,400 bottles of Benylin cough syrup, 2,250 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, 480 bottles of Astrapain cough syrup, and 100 bottles of Adco-Salterpyn cough syrup. Authorities seized the drugs, vehicle, trailer, burial order, and empty coffin as evidence.

Masvingo assured 7 months ART supply

By Rangarirai Shanyurai

Government has revealed that Masvingo Province has a seven months’ supply of Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) HIV medication in stock amidst growing concerns of availability of the critical drugs following United States funding cancellation by American President Donald Trump.
This was revealed by Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Permanent Secretary Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa during a press discussion organised by TellZim News on March 5.
Dr Pazvakavambwa urged the public to remain calm saying government was working on modalities to close the gap after the seven months.
“When we checked together with Minister Ezra Chadzamira (Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution) to find out whether the people who are on ART are safe given this predicament we found ourselves in, the answer we got is that we have seven month supply in stock which I think is a good breathing space whilst government works on alternatives,” said Dr Pazvakavambwa.
His statement comes at a time when people who are taking the special drugs were uncertain of their supply following the funding cancellation.
Dr Pazvakavambwa also acknowledged government’s efforts in improving health service delivery saying drug supply in the province averaged 55-57 percent.
In February 2025, Health and Child Care Minister Dr Douglas Mombeshora said Zimbabwe had enough stocks of ARV for the coming six months.
“We already have supplies of the ARVs for the next six months and procurement process to get drugs that will last until the end of year are already under way. We were doing everything to ensure that we don’t reverse the gains we have made in the fight against HIV and Aids,” said Dr Mombeshora.
The government of Zimbabwe has however showed reluctance in providing sufficient funding for the health sector following successive years of not meeting the requirements of the Abuja Declaration which it is a signatory to.
In the 2025 budget, the health sector was allocated ZiG276.4 billion equivalent to US$7.5 million.

A mother and her four-year-old daughter’s decomposing bodies were found at their home in Makurumidze Village, Chief Gutu in what is suspected to be a gruesome murder, TellZim News can report.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe confirmed the death of Mery Chirume (33) and her daughter, Fadzai Machote (4) and encouraged members of the public with information on whereabouts of the murderer.
“I confirm the death of Chirume and Machote who were found murdered at their home in Gutu on May 4. The police is appealing to the public to bring information which may lead to the arrest of the murderer,” said Dhewa.
Circumstances are that, on March 1, 2025 Chirume and her minor daughter Machote visited her sister in law Cecilia Mavhima who resides in the nearby village at 2000hours and returned to their home the following day at around 1400hours.
On March 4, 2025 Mavhima sent her daughter aged 16 to Chirume’s house to confirm when she was returning to her home as per her promise. The child found the doors locked and knocked but no one responded. She then opened the kitchen hut and found Chirume’s body in a pool of blood.
The girl notified Josephine Utaunashe (56) who resides in the same village with Chirume and she went with other villagers to see for themselves. They found Chirume in a pool of blood while the toddler was missing and they reported the case to the police.
The police came, searched for the little girl and found her body floating in a disused open well which is about 1, 5 meters behind the kitchen. The bodies were taken to Gutu Mission Hospital for postmortem.
In another case of murder in Chivi, Proper Chimatsi (28) of Chivasa Village Headman Gororo, Chivi stabbed Wellington Bako (24) of the same area accusing him of insulting him during a football match.
Allegations are that on March 4, at around 2300hours Bako and Chimatsi were watching football at TT Dube Bottle Stole, Gororo Business Centre in Chivi.
During half time, Chimatsi approached Bako who was standing by the door and asked why he was insulting him during the match. Bako denied the accusations and an altercation arose leading to Chimatsi stabbing Bako once on the chest and once on the shoulder.
Bako fell down bleeding and Chimatsi vanished from the scene. Bako was taken to Gororo Clinic by well-wishers and died upon arrival.
His body was taken to Chivi District Hospital mortuary for postmortem. On March 5 at 0000 hours police were alerted and Chimatsi was arrested.

Masvingo City ward 2 councilor Benson Hwata recently hosted a soccer tournament which he said was aimed to provide entertainment while raising awareness on drug and substance abuse.
The event attracted spectators from across the entire city to witness a showdown between Pudo Crackers FC and Runyararo West Football Club.
Pudo Boys thrashed Runyararo West with a whopping four goals to one.
Hwata, a devout soccer player and fan told TellZim News that he used the platform to encourage residents and youths to make better decisions about their lives and refrain from abusing drugs and substances.
“The whole idea behind the tournament was to provide a platform for entertainment for residents and youths alike. However the most important message I wanted to relay to the youths was to refrain from drug and substance abuse. I encourage youths to find other things to occupy themselves and not drugs,” said Hwata.
Although the match was the first of its kind, Hwata promised residents many more to come, reinforcing his commitment to using sports as a tool for social change.
Drug and Substance abuse has become a cause for concern especially among youths due to economic hardships, unemployment and easy access to illicit drugs.
Commonly abused drug and substances include crystal meth, broncleer and marijuana.
