Discussion on the Establishment of Collaborative Governance for the Development and Implementation of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW)

The 3rd Annual Commemoration of the World Alliance of Religions Peace (WARP) Summit will be held in Seoul, South Korea to seek global cooperation for global peace-building. Heavenly Culture, World Peace, Restoration of Light (HWPL), a peace NGO under the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) hosts this event on September 17-19th in association with International Peace Youth Group (IPYG) and International Womens Peace Group (IWPG).
This annual peace summit since 2014 brings together political and religious leaders, heads of womens and youth groups, civil society, and the press from around the world and provides a platform for discussion and cooperation for peace. This year, more than 1,000 global figures from 120 countries are expected to participate in to discuss establishing collaborative governance between governments and civil societies for implementation of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW), development of education as a culture of peace, and promotion of interfaith harmony.
Former presidents, ministers, UN officials, justices, heads of civic groups, leaders of women, youth, and religions, and journalists will have in-depth discussions in groups on the topics: the direction of peace education for sustainable peace, the role of media in spreading a culture of peace and ways to build a global media network, and the way to foster peaceful harmony amongst religions.
The Chairman of HWPL, Mr. Man Hee Lee, emphasizes the significance of the peace education by saying, “In order for everyone to become a messenger of peace, spreading a culture of peace and peace education by the development of peace materials and training of peace leaders are important.
Region-specific meetings are also planned for the implementation of peace projects in collaboration between governments and civil society groups. Each representative from each sector discusses ways to develop action plans for peace-building that can best reflect the cultural and social environment in the region.
The Chairwoman of IWPG, Mrs. Nam Hee Kim, highlights the power of women for achieving peace saying 3.6 billion of women, half of the worlds population, have the power to lead humanity to the world of peace. If we cannot use our potential, we can never achieve a peaceful world.” The world women leaders are expected to make one voice to transform the DPCW into a legally binding form for the cessation of war in 2017 IWPG Network Forum.
Along with sessions, a peace festival with 100,000 participants and local citizens will also be held on the second day of the summit. With the slogan 'Together for Peace as Messenger of Peace', cultural performances by 8,000 youth will be shown to convey the core messages of peace as a culture in the global community.

Prospective MDC-T MP threatens to kill Zanu PF member

Nashe Mahachi

MUTARE – A member of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) who wants to contest for the Makoni South seat in the 2018 elections appeared in court for threatening to kill his Zanu PF counterpart.
Chamunorwa Muzvidzwa (37) of Nyazura Township appeared before Rusape Provincial Magistrate Shane Kubonera facing charges of violating Section 186 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9.23 which makes it a criminal for one to make threats to commit murder.
Muzvidzwa pleaded not guilty when he appeared in court, saying he never threatened to kill Kenneth Chaparapata, who works in Nyazura.
The court heard that on May 28 at around 23:00 hrs at Rukweza business bentre, Muzvidzwa told one Mazvita Mutizwa that if he wins in the oncoming elections he was going to kill Charaparata and his entire family.
Mutizwa went and informed Charaparata who then made a police leading to Muzvidzwa arrest.
The case was postponed to a later day for continuation of trial.local

Cultural conflicts worsen in Malipati

…. traditional leaders accused of crusading against worshippers

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Relations between church elders and traditional leaders in Sengwe communal lands have taken a turn for the worse after the recent assault of Zion Christian Church (ZCC) members by boys from Chengule circumcision school in Malipati.
On August 16, a Zion Christian Church (ZCC) Sunday service was abandoned prematurely after a mob of youths from Headman Ngwenyeni left their camp to assault congregants with sjamboks accusing them of violating traditional practices through their singing during the circumcision season.
The youths claimed that the playing of music and the beating of drums was forbidden when boys go into camp for circumcision rites.
Chairperson of the Chiredzi District Civil Protection Committee and Acting Chiredzi District Administrator (DA) Ndeya Nyede said the continued increase in cases of villagers being assaulted by the youths in camp was worrisome as the constitution clearly states that no person in the practice of their rights should infringe on the others’ rights.
“The constitution is supreme. People are free to practice their own rights as long as they do not affect others in the process. No one is above the law and people should be able to practice their own religion as well as their culture, not this situation where religion and culture are clashing Anyone who breaks the law of the country in the name of culture should be brought to book,” said Nyede.
Chairman of the Sengwe Pastors Fraternity, Reverend Steven Chauke said cases of assault are rising every day and accused traditional leaders of sanctioning the violence and protecting culprits.
“No arrests have been made yet because some known traditional leaders is interfering. We are having a dialogue meeting on 1 September with the Sengwe traditional leadership to map the way forward,” said Chauke.
Acting spokesperson for Masvingo province Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the case and said it was still under investigation.
“The report was received and we are investigating the case. People were beaten indiscriminately after one member danced at the church, a situation which seems to have provoked this other group from Chengule Circumcision School,” said Assistant Inspector Dhewa.
Chief Sengwe could not be reached for comment as his mobile phone was not reachable.local

Mberengwa villagers bemoan collapsed Jeka Bridge

MBERENGWA – Many villagers in Chief Mtevaidzi are afraid their children will soon not be able to go to school at the onset of the rainy season as there is little hope that the collapsed Jeka Bridge across Mwenezi River will be repaired in time.
The bridge was swept away by Cyclone Dineo several months ago but government is yet to respond to the damage.
Villagers who spoke to TellZim News said they were afraid their children who go to Chegato High School across the river will miss school for several days in the rainy season as the bridge was likely to remain in a state of disrepair for a long time.
“It is now months since the bridge got swept away but the government has shown no interest in repairing it and we are approaching another rainy season. How will our children cross the river to school?” said one villager.
Other villagers from Zibanga and Mutsime said they too will not be able to travel across the river which usually gets flooded during the rainy season.
“We have to cross the river to reach most of the facilities we need for example Jeka Clinic, schools and business areas. It is already difficult to cross the river and it will be totally impossible to do so when the rains come,” said another villager.
Mberengwa District Administrator (DA) White Nkoma said government was planning to construct a relief, temporary footbridge across the river.
“Government is working to raise funds to repair the bridge and a lot of money is needed for the reconstruction but soon, a temporary footbridge is going to be built,” Nkoma said.
The footbridge, he said, would offer temporary relief as funds for the reconstruction of the proper bridge are mobilised.local

Afr-I-CAN in Me embarks on mental illness awareness campaign

ZVISHAVANE – Mental health advocacy group Afr-I-CAN in Me has embarked on a project called The Mental Illness Rainbow Awareness Project as part of its wider efforts to bring awareness on mental health challenges.
Afr-I-CAN in Me director Ropa Mzari said although the project started in July, interest among stakeholders was rapidly growing as people were now keener than before to explore the subject which for long had been shrouded in superstitions.
“For each month, there is a selected theme and colour to help spread awareness. Awareness ribbons, hats, beanies, T-shirts and ties can all be used in this awareness project. We are currently running with the theme, ‘Self-Injury Awareness’ which is regarded as another form of a mental illness,” Mzari told TellZim News.
She said self-injury referred to self-inflicted harm that people may do on their own bodies but without any suicidal intentions.
“Some people injure themselves by severe scratching, burning themselves, hair-pulling, self-poisoning and bruising. Most of these are done on areas of the body that can be easily hidden, but some people do it on parts that are visible to everyone.
“It is important to be on the look-out for people who get involved in this behavior as they could do more damage to their bodies. Treatment can be sought from psychologists.
“Alongside the theme for each month, we continue with the “Stigma Must Fall” theme because there is still a lot that society needs to learn and know concerning mental illnesses although of late there has been more open talk about mental illnesses,” Mzari said.
She encouraged churches, schools, non-profit organisations and the general public to help people living with mental health challenges and support the awareness campaign.local

Dr Godfrey Gandawa

Lloyd Shunje

MUTARE – The Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Dr Godfrey Gandawa last week presided over Mutare Polytechnic’s 28th graduation and prize giving ceremony.
Out of the 716 graduates who were conferred with certificates and diplomas, 417 were males while 299 were females.
Speaking at the event, Dr Gandawa said advancements in technology require lecturers to undergo some extra training so that they will be well-versed in all areas they are expected to master.
Gandawa said his ministry will soon come up with a policy which will compel and make it mandatory for lecturers to undergo industrial attachment so that they interact with the latest technologies.
“Students go out on industrial attachment where they familiarise themselves with modern technologies and when they come back, they will be way ahead of their lecturers in as far as technology literacy is concerned.
“The ministry will soon make it mandatory, through policy, for all lecturers to undergo industrial attachment as a condition for their employment.
“Lecturing staff must attach themselves to industry to acquire requisite skills that will allow them to produce a competent and relevant graduate because technology in industry is fast changing,” Dr Gandawa said.
Mutare Polytechnic principal Poniso Watema said the institution was working to set up a vehicle canopy production centre.
“The institution embarked on consultations on registration of patents and trademarking for a project in the production of vehicle canopies.
“Ultimately the institution hopes to train students in canopy production who in turn will start their own business through a business incubation process. Five lectures have undergone training in this regard,” said Watema.education

City council partners Masvingo Poly in property survey

Mayor Hubert Fidze

MASVINGO – City of Masvingo has partnered Masvingo Polytechnic to launch a property survey as a means to clear the way for improved service delivery for residents
Objectives of the survey centre on enumerating all property in town, to document all properties and to make recommendations on improving service delivery.
In his speech at the launch of the survey on Thursday last week, City of Masvingo Mayor Hubert Fidze said the partnership between the city council and the polytechnic will help to improve service delivery.
“My council has decided to carry out a property survey for the whole city. In a bid to improve service delivery, urban local authorities are carrying out peer reviews to assess each other on the quality of services being consumed by residents. These services vary from provision of water, liquid waste management, refuse collection, housing delivery, e.t.c.
“For my council to offer efficient service delivery, it requires accurate data but available data on the ground is either incomplete or outdated and this has justified the carrying out of this survey,” said Fidze.
In order to achieve the objective of improved service delivery, Fidze said, council should tap into the expertise that exists at Masvingo Polytechnic.
Masvingo Polytechnic principal Evans Musara said the college was in full support of the partnership and will work to ensure it success.
“I also want to assure you that the team has all the requisite competencies and experience to see to it that this project is done to the satisfaction of our partner and all other stakeholders in this project,” said Musara.
He also urged all residents of Masvingo to co-operate with the enumerators who will be visiting their properties by providing all the information requested.local

Voter registration exercise must begin now

0

The credibility of any democratic electoral process depends on its openness and the degree to which all eligible people are able to participate in it. As the country hurtles towards the crucial 2018 general election, it is important that political parties, civil society and the media work hard to ensure that as many people as possible get a chance to cast their ballots. However, that can only be achieved if all potential voters are given ample time to register because without registering, one cannot vote. We are therefore surprised that there seems to be no concern that the voter registration exercise has not yet begun though we could just be six months away from the election (remember there have been hints of an early election). It is in light of this that we feel the voter registration exercise must begin now so as to avoid disenfranchisement of any section of the electorate. In 2013, there were widespread allegations that the government denied many people the right to vote by allocating fewer registration resources to perceived opposition strongholds especially urban areas. It is therefore imperative for opposition political parties and pro-democracy movements to push for the immediate opening of voter registration or else there will not be enough time for everybody to register and the horrible 2013 will repeat herself. People in urban areas will be the most disadvantaged by a short registration timeframe because of their work commitments that may leave them very little or no time at all to spare for such exercises. Opening the voter registration now will also give the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) some time to assess the reliability of the new system known as BVR. If this system is not put to test early, the country would be in for a big shock if that system proves to be ‘unreliable’ at the last minute. That would mean reverting to the old discredited Tobaiwa Mudede voters roll, with all its ghost voters. We put ‘unreliable’ in quotes to highlight the fact that we are fully conscious of the implication of that word in light our Machiavellian politics that will most likely undermine that registration system if it is deemed to be a threat to the ruling party.comment

MDC-T must have primary elections

0

Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) leader Morgan Tsvangirai announced that his party will not go for primary elections ahead of 2018 general elections and even bragged that he would personally hand-pick the senatorial seats candidates. We must say what a shame!
The party is widely accepted as a pro-democracy party and one would wonder why Tsvangirai and his top allies want to exhibit such dictatorial tendencies now. Tsvangirai has been on record accusing President Robert Mugabe of being a dictator but, as it appears, the MDC-T leader is the actual dictator because Mugabe has never barred Zanu PF from going for elections.
To say primary elections would divide MDC-T is lazy thinking. MDC-T members have the right to elect candidates of their choice at primaries, candidates that will represent them at the 2018 general elections but Tsvangirai wants to take that right away while hiding behind a finger. People can only be divided if they do not have a strong leader and Tsvangirai is to blame for the mess in the party; primary elections are not to blame.
His thinking confirms that he is indeed weak, both physically and intellectually, and banning primary elections will not help his situation. He should rather allow MDC-T members to exercise their right by voting for candidates of their choice. Imposing candidates, like what Tsvangirai said would do on senatorial seats, is even more disastrous as it may lead to a protest vote.
Tsvangirai therefore, must stop imposing candidates and be a true democrat. Zanu PF would go to party with his silly miscalculations and that might cost MDC-T heavily next year.  It is high time Tsvangirai finds real problems that are dividing the party instead of banning primaries.
Many former MDC-T supporters accuse Tsvangirai of being a dictator and this recent announcement seems to vindicate them. It is a fact that contenders seldom find common ground easily and if that is then taken as a problem, then Tsvangirai will simply impose his own favourites and get away with it. We call upon Tsvangirai to lead by example and be a true democrat.local
