Protect your cattle against droughts, Mwenezi ranchers told

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – Several farmers last week converged at Chizumba for a livestock field day where knowledge on how to best care for cattle in a drought-prone region was shared.
Chizumba feedlot was constructed by labour from the community after receiving materials from the Food and Agricultural Organisation (Fao) for the purpose of temporarily sheltering beasts destined for slaughter.
Feed for the livestock is loaned to the farmers by the Success Microfinace Bank.
Provincial livestock production development officer Aaron Muchazivepi, who was the guest speaker, advised farmers in the district to prioritise cattle rearing as it the most lucrative farming options available.
“Besides Masvingo being one of the provinces with the highest numbers of cattle which are more than one million, Mwenezi district is at the top of all other district in terms of the number of cattle. There is need to adopt strategies that ensure cattle survive even in the face of severe droughts,” said Muchazivepi.
Success Microfinance Bank managing director, Innocent Sithole said his institution issued loans even to those who previously had been regarded as ineligible due to issues of collateral.
He said the loans are given in the form of feeds not money as cash was prone to being diverted.
The field day was attended by various dignitaries and stakeholders among them provincial veterinary officer Dr Ernest Dzimwasha, Success Microfinance Bank provincial business development officer Pascal Makwarimba, abattoirs representatives, farmers and ordinary people.local

Chipinge Cllr denies profiting from donor programme

Increase Gumbo

CHIPINGE – Zanu PF councillor for Chipinge ward 26, Misheck Busangabanye has denied reports by some villagers that he makes money from a Family Aids Caring Trust (FACT) relief programme in his ward.
Speaking to TellZim News, Busangabanye blamed infighting in his political party for the reports, saying those who wanted to take over his position were responsible for spreading falsehoods against him.
“I know who did it, it’s the people who are interested in my position seeking to put my name into disrepute. They only want to tarnish my image now that 2018 elections are around the corner. It’s just a game of politics.
“I am not a beneficiary of FACT so how can I involve myself in things that do not concern me. I want to know who is behind all this and I will order my security to investigate more on the issue. I am interested to know the culprit who sought to tarnish my image,” said Busangabanye.
FACT has been running a relief programme in Chipinge by which it provides US$50 to needy villagers as part of fighting hunger but there are complaints that the programme was being abused especially in ward 26.
Some villagers, however, alleged that Busangabanye was ordering potential beneficiaries to pay him US$10 each for them to be included and a monthly US$1 to stay on the scheme.
Meanwhile efforts to get a comment from FACT were fruitless by the time of going to print.local

Negligent ‘zvipipipi’ drivers overrun Chivhu

File pic

Unregistered taxi operators commonly known as ‘zvipipipi’ seem to have taken over Chivhu but have lost the public’s confidence due to slack and careless driving.
Many residents say the pirate taxi drivers have overtaken kombi drivers as the most reckless drivers on the road.
“We are travelling in fear on the roads because of these guys. The police must seriously deal with them because they disregard road rules and many of them have no driver’s licences,” said one concerned resident.
Others residents also said the pirate taxi drivers were paying little regard for the newly-installed traffic lights especially when competition for passengers become stiffer.
“They jump red robots and you begin to wonder what sort of driving is that. We urge the police to take action against them. Our children are no longer safe because the roads have been turned into a danger,” said another.
Short-distance transport services in all the country’s towns and cities have been taken over by the pirate taxis who have, however, been criticised for their haphazard way of doing business; stopping anywhere and taking off at high speed in busy streets.
Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) in conjunction with the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) held an awareness campaign last week in Chivhu and the public complained over how the pirate taxes were being allowed to do as they please.local

MASVINGO – Regency Group of Hotels director Edison Zvobgo Jr says the company was moving swiftly to restore all services at Chevron Hotel, which was gutted by fire last week, back to normal.
Part of the hotel caught fire due to a suspected electrical fault last Thursday night, leaving the kitchen and pantry extensively damaged.
“The fire was a big blow to us because a lot of equipment was burnt. However, the mishap didn’t deter us from moving forward as we are working to restore our services by having the kitchen renovated. We have since had people bringing in quotations to repair the damages done to the buildings,” Zvobgo said.
He further told TellZim News that he was happy guests were still getting the same quality services despite the setback.
“When the mishap happened, we offered most of our clients alternative accommodation at our sister hotel, Flamboyant, but they said they were good being at Chevron. This then prompted us to make use of our emergency kitchen and we also transformed one of the rooms into an impromptu kitchen so that we could keep giving them quality service,” added Zvobgo.
He revealed that the company was yet to get a formal report on possible causes of the fire, adding that a forensics team had since visited the hotel for investigations.local
