…we are puzzled, says Dr Shamu

MASVINGO – Shortly after losing and subsequently recovering renal equipment under mysterious circumstances, Masvingo General Hospital has once again lost 11 gas cylinders through a brazen theft case which is suspected to be an inside job.
Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Amadeus Shamu confirmed the theft and expressed worry on the increasing theft of public property at the referral institution.
“It is sad that such theft that disadvantages patients continue recurring at such a big hospital. It is hard for me to answer on ways we have devised to stop the rot but we have since tasked the management to come up with ways they think can lessen such disturbing incidences and we will take it from there.
“For now, we have instructed them to reinforce the porous areas of the hospital fence which we think are used by thieves to take out the loot unnoticed. As I noted earlier on, there is no easy answer to how we can curb this as we are also puzzled on how such important equipment keeps disappearing without being noticed,” said a worried Shamu.
TellZim News is however well informed that before their disappearance, the gas tanks were being kept at the Hospital Equipment Maintenance (HEM) department and two staff members (names supplied) have since been taken in for questioning.
The gas cylinders are used in health institutions to power fridges that store essential drugs.
As part of efforts to strengthen security, the hospital has since started constructing a guard room and erecting a boom gate so that goods that enter and exit the hospital can be monitored more closely.local

‘Mugabe cannot cure old age’

President Robert Mugabe

Upenyu Chaota

Opposition parties are viewing President Robert Mugabe’s latest impromptu visit to Singapore for medical check-ups as a sign that the nonagenarian can no longer cope and should instead step down and pave way for new and energetic blood to take over.
They claim Mugabe’s old age is costing the country heavily since his frequent visits to Singapore are draining the already dry state coffers because he spends millions of US dollars on every trip, and all that money is taken from a country where people are sleeping in bank queues.
The Morgan Tsvangirai-led Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) said Mugabe was facing a lot of health-related challenges owing to his continuous clinging to the most demanding job in the country.
“We have always said Mugabe must rest because at 93 – soon to be 94 – he cannot keep up with the demands of the highest office in the land. Zimbabwe needs someone who is young and energetic, not what Zanu PF is doing to the old man.
“Mugabe’s trips to Singapore to seek treatment for his age-related health problems are costing the nation millions of dollars. Singapore is one of the most expensive destinations in the world but Mugabe spends the tax payers’ money without any shame,” said MDC-T spokesperson Obert Gutu.
He said old age has no cure and Mugabe should realise that and do himself and the nation a favour by retiring now.
“Mugabe is not doing anyone a favour at this moment. He is doing the nation a major disservice. He has become a major national liability and we say he should call it a day. His minions are looting with a passion and he has no control over them that is why they want him to die in office.
“He is spending more time out of the country than in and this is a national security threat because we cannot have a commander-in-chief who is always absent. At his age, Mugabe always snaps when he is exposed to the pressure of running the country and that is why he jets out frequently,” said Gutu.
Joice Mujuru’s National People’s Party (NPP) national executive member Jeffryson Chitando attributed the economic hardships being encountered in the country as punishment for the abuse of President Mugabe.
“Mugabe is not ill at all, those are simply the vagaries is old age. You can’t treat old age. Zimbabweans are only abusing the old man instead of giving him a good rest. He is being forced to wake up early and go to work, that is cruelty at its best.
“I don’t think Zimbabweans deserve any mercy. The hardships that the nation is going through is punishment enough for the abuse of the old man,” said Chitando.
Zanu PF youth boss Kudzanai Chipanga, who has renamed Mugabe to Angel Gabriel, is on record saying Mugabe will die in office and if he were to retire, he would go to the Constitutional Court to challenge the retirement because he (Mugabe) would have infringed on their rights.politics

The tournament, which was sponsored by renowned contractors Jadecon Construction and Engineering as well as auto repairs and services giant Byword Motors, raised a substantial amount of money for charity.

This is also our way of interacting with the community and that has been happening since 2004,” said Col Maraire.
He thanked all players and the sponsors for supporting the initiatives and pointed out that the ZNA districts charity golf tournaments for 2017 will culminate in a bigger national event in Nyanga on September 14-17.
Jadecon Construction and Engineering director, who is also Masvingo Golf Club captain, Stanley Kondongwe thanked the ZNA and all players for choosing to partner the community to advance a charitable cause.
“We are humbled by the commitment and passion we witnessed today. We had not expected such an overwhelming response for a Sunday tournament when many people will be preparing for work the following day. This is for a good cause and it also serves to support Masvingo Golf Club,” said Kondongwe.

Having rocked airwaves with his tracks like Ndoramba, and Muranda three years ago, Chinovava said July was the month his fans can expect his latest offering.
“It is true that I have a new album titled Lamentation which will be available on the market for all music lovers in July. This is my second piece of work after my first album titled Ndoramba was released in 2014. The album has eight new tracks and five bonus tracks.
“Lamentation is the title track and the bonus tracks include songs released as singles and these include Misodzi and Mhiripiri nemunyu.
Chinovava also said his messages were motivated by day to day events in the society he grew up in.
“Having been raised from a background where youths find it hard to find their way to the top, I craft my music to motivate them. I feel reggae music has always carried such messages but for locals, the messages will have more impact if communicated by someone they know at a personal level.
“I am also glad that Masvingo, besides having many voices to market our work, now has a local radio station Hevoi FM which will support our work. This makes me double sure that my new album will be better received than the first one which was set back by lack of airplay,” Chinovava said.

MUTARE – What started as a good journey turned tragic after a King Lion bus was involved in a fatal accident which left 43 passengers dead on the spot and 24 injured.
The death rose to 45 as two more passengers died on their way to Karoi Hospital.
Still visibly shaken by the accident, one of the survivors, Paul Chitondwe says he survived for a purpose and blames the driver for overloading and allegedly failing to exercise caution on the road.
Chitondwe and his wife Maria of Chikanga suburb in Mutare were travelling to Zambia after one of their sons got a place at Cavendish University in Zambia so they were going to help him with logistics.
“My son got a place to study law in Zambia. I and my wife decided to travel to Zambia to do all the logistics.  We left Mutare on June 7 to Harare.
The following morning, we went to Road Port and boarded the King Lion bus.
The bus was overloaded but they continued picking up some passengers on our way.
The driver was approached by some passengers telling him to exercise caution because he was over speeding but he did not take heed,” he said.
Chitondwe said that on approaching the 256 km peg in Nyamakate about 40m outside Karoi along the Harare-Chirundu highway, they suddenly heard a deafening sound of a tyre burst. He said the bus veered off the road and rammed into a tree.
“The driver was driving at an excessively high speed when the tyre burst. I still remember being thrown all over but I don’t know how I got outside the bus.
“When I woke, up my wife was besides me asking if I was well.  I just woke up while I was outside and my whole body was in pain.
“I had injuries on my shoulder, head and both legs and we were rushed to Nyamakate Clinic. Unfortunately, the clinic could not accommodate all of us.  We were put on the floor. We were later transferred to Karoi Clinic for further treatment.
“At Karoi Clinic, there were no x-ray machines so we ended up being ferried to Chinhoyi Clinic before I was again taken to Belvedere Medical Centre together with my wife who suffered head injuries, legs and dislocation on the right hand. I really thank God for preserving our lives as a family,” said Chitondwe.
The accident was declared a national disaster.local

ZVISHAVANE – The row between MDC-T senator Lilian Timveos and local journalist John Chimunhu has returned to the courts with the senator claiming US$2.5 million in damages after Chimunhu allegedly defied a High Court order compelling him to stop slandering her.
Prosecutor Stanley Ncube alleged that Chimunhu, who resides in Mandava ward 3, was on September 5, 2016, presented with a provisional order from the High Court barring him from publishing unpleasant things against Timveos.
The journalist, who had been provided with a job as a researcher when he was reportedly in dire need of money, later had a fallout with the senator over some issues.
Magistrate Shepherd Mnjanja heard that Timveos owed Chimunhu some money and the two quarreled over the matter and the tension worsened after the senator discovered that Chimunhu was allegedly digging up her confidential information from the laptop they shared.
The journalist had, after discovering the information, went on to question her integrity and the fallout got out of hand leading to the dismissal of Chimunhu.
Out of anger and bitterness, Chimunhu allegedly resorted to parading what he had found to the public and this was when the High Court gave him an order which he allegedly decided to ignore.
He allegedly went on to write even more damaging information on his website called the Now Daily giving the senator all sorts of nasty names and alleging that she was a prostitute who uses a fake identity as Lilian Timveos when she was in fact Lilian Mpofu.
He further allegedly published porn videos which he claimed belonged to Timveos.
“As a legislator, senator, mother to my children and supporters and a wife to my husband, l am appealing to the court to punish John Chinyama for ruining my reputation and now l am walking naked.
“I thought he would comply with the High Court order, apologise and delete what he wrote and we move on but l now want 2.5 million US dollars as a compensation for defamation of character. I owe him money and l will give him but disgracing me is not the best solution,” said Tamveos.
The matter was due for continuation of trial on the July 5.local

Gwatidzo, a Harare-based trainee mechanic, says as the times change, more women need to learn the little things that keep their cars moving.
Servicing a vehicle in good time, Gwatidzo says, and in accordance to recommended garage mileage is the best way. She says vehicle servicing involves more than just changing the oil and oil filter.
“It’s an opportunity for a good mechanic to look at a lot of other things on your car that include wheel balancing as well as wear and tear of some moving parts,” Gwatidzo says.
“Working with the guys motivates me a lot because we work as a team. They help me in certain areas and I assist them too. I learn from them and they learn from me. There is no easy job because every job has its own challenges and all challenges have solutions,” she says, adding that she has no problem being the only female among her workmates.
