…Zanu PF’s Ngwenya blames factionalism for woes

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Zanu PF candidate for the upcoming ward 2 by-election, Obert Ngwenya has blamed internal intra-party strife for what he calls is a concerted smear campaign against him.
A few weeks ago, Ngwenya was assaulted by a man who accused him of dating his wife, a police officer, but Ngwenya dismissed the allegations as the work of his adversaries who wanted him to lose the police vote.
Recently, fliers with his rival Gabriel Chebundo’s image circulated in the ward and on social media, directly attacking Ngwenya’s personality. Chebundo is contesting in the by-election as an independent candidate.
One of the messages on the posters read, “He is a pollutant of community, so Ngwenya anofanira kunokandwa kumarara, sewage is better than him because anotora vakadzi vevanhu.”
Chebundo, however, said he distanced himself from the fliers during a recent closed door meeting with Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) officials and the police.
“I was recently called by Zec to answer questions about the fliers that are being associated with me. My election motto is not yet out and I am not the one who made those fliers that are circulating,” said Chebundo.
Ngwenya now blames some senior party officials whom he said were not pleased with his victory in the primary elections.
“This is internal politics. I don’t have any problems with Chebundo because I am quite sure that I will win this election in spite of the challenges. This is being done by some senior officials in my party who want me to pay tribute to them before I occupy this public office,” said Ngwenya.
During the controversial party primaries to select the candidate, leaders were reportedly divided, with the provincial commissariat led by Jevas Masosota routing for Ngwenaya against Ruben Madzingo whom the generality of the people is said to have preferred.
The by-election will be held on August 5 to replace Jesta Mateyaunga who died after a short illeness in May.politics

MUTARE – City of Mutare Town Clerk Joshua Maligwa and Mayor Tatenda Nhamarare will soon meet the Minister of Local Government Public Works and National Housing, Saviour Kasukuwere over squatters who have invaded Chikanga.
Speaking to Tellzim News, Nhamarare said the council was very worried about the 700 families who were living as squatters near the railway line in Chikanga.
“Last week, council resolved that the Town Clerk and I will meet the minister on the issue of squatters who have invaded Chikanga and we have so far booked an appointment for this week with the minister so he can assist us,” said Nhamarare.
The city has also sought an eviction order through the High Court but the matter is set to be heard during the first week of August.
“We have also approached the High Court for an eviction orders and the issue will be heard during the first week of August,” added Nhamarare.
During last week’s full council meeting, some councillors said the council had no resources to evict the squatters.
They said council did not have the land on which to move them to, highlighting that it was only the local government ministry which could help.
Mutare is one of the cities hardest hit by the problem of people who allocate themselves land outside of government parametres thereby putting a strain on resources and posing a danger on public health.local

Cash-strapped Chiredzi RDC begs ratepayers to pay

CHIREDZI – Chiredzi Rural District Council chairperson Alderman Matsilele has pleaded with ratepayers to pay up their dues, saying the local authority was in a financial fix caused by little revenue inflows.
Presenting his second quarter report in a recent full council meeting, Matsilele said it was now exceptionally difficult to fund recurrent expenditure because people were not paying.
“This year the challenges have begun quite early; in June, which spells a lot of trouble ahead. This was due to late payment by our major stakeholders who normally pay at the beginning of the year.
“Council is supposed to collect about $271 000 every month, but during the month under review, only $77 900 was collected, which is far short of our monthly requirement,” he said.
Matsilele also highlighted that in the month of June, labour costs outweighed what was budgeted for due to staff retrenchments.
“During the period under review, employment costs exceeded what was budgeted for due to the statutory obligations for the retrenched staff,” said Matsilele.
He indicated that this year’s annual performance (January to June) was far much lower than that of previous years.
“As of 30 June 2017, council had collected $994 911 21, which is an annual performance of 30.59 percent. However, the performance for the period from January to June is 61.7 percent from an anticipated budget income of $1 626 349 for the period,” said Matsilele.local

CHIREDZI – The Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (TUZ) has promised Zanu PF its full support ahead of the much-anticipated general election next year, urging its members to do whatever it takes to ensure the ruling party retains power.
This was heard last week at Chiredzi Primary School during the conclusion of an ICT training workshop organised by the union for some 88 of its members in Chiredzi West.
The training was the 13th of a series of workshops being held nationwide ostensibly to help TUZ members understand the Biometric Voter Registration System (BVR) and prepare them for the elections.
TUZ president Timon Tandi said teachers were opinion leaders in their communities and therefore had a duty to campaign for Zanu PF.
He said teachers should spread the message to kids who will then influence their parents to back Zanu PF in 2018.
“We are for Zanu PF and it is your role as teachers to back Zanu PF wherever you are as it is the party which brought education to your doorstep. Pamberi nekuvhotera Zanu, pasi nekutengesa nyika!
“We are doing these courses in all constituencies in order to bring together teachers and their local MPs because a teacher who teaches a class of 40 pupils in class can influence many parents….we will lose votes in 2018 if we fail to do so,” said Tandi.
Chiredzi West MP Darlington Chiwa, who was the guest speaker at the graduation, made it clear that teachers were being used to help sway the new voter registration system to the favour of Zanu PF.
“We are training you such that you will have the knowledge to win elections for the ruling party in 2018 using the new system of voting,” said Chiwa, warning the teachers not to ‘sell out’ as they did in 2008.local

Six Mwenezi women claim maintenance from one man

MWENEZI – A peasant farmer who sired children with six different women is paying around US$300 on a monthly basis for the upkeep of all his children, the Mwenezi Civil Court heard last week.
Bloodwell Tarume, who resides at Rutenga growth point, was dragged to the court by his wife, Bester Tarume who accused him of neglecting his fatherly duties after he disappeared from his homestead to go and live with his girlfriends.
“He left home sometime in March this year and he never left any cent till today. He is residing with his girlfriends. So he deserves to pay $300 on a monthly basis,” Bester told the court.
However, Bloodwell told the court that he could not afford to pay the demanded money as he had five other separate maintenance claims he was currently paying.
He showed the court written evidence to prove that he was indeed paying maintenance for five more children sired with five different women.
Asked by the magistrate Honest Musiiwa why he engaged in such irresponsible behaviour of siring children everywhere, Tarume said it was a habit whose cause he too could not understand.
Musiiwa ordered Tarume to pay Bester US$50 on a monthly basis for the upkeep of their child.
Of Bloodwell’s six maintenance cases, four were presided over at the Mwenezi Civil Court while the other two cases were heard in Masvingo and Gutu.local

Mberengwa villagers rubbish Nkosana Moyo presidential bid

MBERENGWA – Some villagers in this impoverished district feel that the decision by Nkosana Moyo to launch his political outfit called the Alliance for People’s Agenda (APA) at a multi-star rated hotel in Harare was a sure sign that the former Industry and International Trade minister was detached from reality.
Speaking to TellZim News, the villagers said Moyo would stand a better chance of making it in the country’s rugged political landscape if he had launched his party among the ordinary people in his own district.
“He has alienated himself from the ordinary people; the choice of the venue was unwise. How can you claim that you are launching a pro-poor organisation when you are surrounded by opulence?” queried one villager who preferred not to be identified.
Another villager said Moyo had shown that he did not identify with the conditions of the very people he purports to represent.
“He launched his party far away from us yet he expects us to support him. He speaks high sounding language just like all the other politicians we have. How different is he from the people we already have in high places? He has been out of the country for too long so he has lost touch,” said he villager.
Dr Moyo launched APA and announced his plans to contest the country’s presidency in 2018 at the glomourous Meikles Hotel in Harare on June 29 but many people have written off his chances of success, with others going to as far as labelling him a Zanu PF project.
He has however denied the speculations, claiming that his political party was genuine and was committed to reversing the economic problems that have for long bedeviled the country under Zanu PF rule.politics

ZVISHAVANE – Disagreements over ownership of a mine in Vanguard, Mberengwa, turned violent, resulting in the owners of the claim being injured by gun shots, the Zvishavane Magistrates Court heard last week.
Herbert Kwenzani (43) of 6303 Ngundu Close, Mucheke in Masvingo, was reportedly shot by Ronald Mugangavari (29), of Zvishavane, who was aggrieved after losing ownership of Midway 15 mine through a High Court ruling.
Mugangavari and his security guard Tawanda Moyo, appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Shepherd Mnjanja facing attempted murder charges.
Appearing for the State, Amos Ncube told the court that on July 4 this year, Mugangavari, in the company of Moyo, went to the mine to confront Kwenzani who happened to be at the property with his brother, Robert Hwekwete, to tend operations that had resumed following their court victory.
When the new mine owners approached Mugangavari and Moyo to find out why they were at the site, the latter allegedly took out guns and fired at the two brothers injuring them in the process.
According to the State, Kwenzani was shot on the knee while Hwekwete was shot on the palm and the firearms used were recovered and sent to police ballistics for forensic examination.
The two suspects were granted a bail of US$100 each and will be back in court on July 19 for continuation of trial.local

MWENEZI – A well-known Zion Christian Church (ZCC) pastor is in the middle of an adultery scandal after he allegedly impregnated a married woman.
The family of the aggrieved man is said to be demanding an unspecified amount of money and cattle in damages and has taken their case up with the traditional court.
When contacted for comment, Chief Mawarire confirmed the development saying he was due to preside over the case.
“A case of adultery has been presented to my court. John Mabheja of Pikinini village, who leads the Manyuchi Zion Christian Church (ZCC), is said to have impregnated Taruvinga’s wife who resides in the same village.
“I was supposed to preside over the matter this week but unfortunately the accused did not show up for hearing. I believe next week he will cooperate and we will look into the issue,” said Chief Mawarire.
Sources said Taruvinga, who worked in South Africa, had returned home and dumped his wife at the pastor’s homestead when he was tipped that she was pregnant through the illicit affair.
The woman then left the pastor’s homestead for her parents’ place in Chivi where she gave birth but is now back with a baby she wants Mabheja to maintain.
Earlier on, the pastor is said to have admitted paternity when he was subjected to an inter-family court.
The sources said after the family hearing, Mabheja has not been seen in public but is understood to be staying at a relative’s homestead in Mariot resettlement area, out of the public glare.local

GUTU – Joseph Mushayi (64), who was head at Chiguhune Primary School in Mvumvi village in Chief Gutu area last week committed suicide by hanging himself.
Masvingo acting police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident saying on July 08, Mushayi woke up from where he was sleeping with his girlfriend Sheila Zvarevashe and went out but did not come back.
Ass Insp Dhewa said around 04:30 hrs, Zvarevashe is said to have gone out to look for her husband who had not yet returned to the bedroom.
She then sought the help of Alice Mushayi (sister to the deceased) and they later found him hanging on a piece of wire on a tree about 100 metres from his homestead.
Sources who spoke to TellZim News said the deceased’s first wife had died and he was always in conflict with Zvarevashe; his girlfriend.
“There were some conflicts between Mushayi and his girlfriend and we suspect that it could have been part of the cause,” said a source who decline to be named but said the deceased was once head at Mutero Primary School before moving to Chiguhune.
In a separate incident, a 19-year-old man from Nduna village in Headman Madzivire in Chivi hanged himself after he was accused of rape.
Ass Ins Dhewa also confirmed the incident saying Brian Mudzingwa was heard talking to a neighbour sometime in June saying he was being accused of rape and that was the time he was seen alive.
On July 08, his body was seen hanging on a tree by a boy who was heading goats. The boy reported the matter to one Esther Nduna who later reported it to the police.
Ass Insp Dhewa said people should seek counseling when faced with difficult situations rather than commit suicide.
“People should seek counseling from the family, traditional or religious leaders when faced with difficult situations. We as the police also offer counseling through the Community Relations Liaison Office (CRLO),” said Ass Insp Dhewa.local

…Omar dismisses stroke reports

MWENEZI – Zanu PF Member of Parliament for Mwenezi East, Joosbi Omar last week dismissed as unfounded rumours that have been circulating on social media alleging that he was critically ill after suffering a stroke.
Addressing Zanu PF supporters at his by-election victory celebrations at Neshuro High School last Saturday, a jovial Omar said speculations about his health were misplaced.
“I am still alive and strong, that’s why I dance for you. The rumour that I stroked are absolute lies that were crafted by my detractors.
“Despite the current financial constraints, developmental projects will continue. I am aware that there are several problems troubling the constituency like pupils who attend lessons sitting on the ground. I will do my best to resolve such problems,” said Omar.
Zanu PF provincial secretary for transport and welfare, who is also the district party chairperson, Rennias Muchoko also said he had received several phone calls from people seeking clarifications with regards to Omar’s stroke reports.
Part of one of the WhatsApp messages that had been circulating read, “Omar hospitalised in ICU after stuck (sic) by stroke hardly less than a year after Mazebra died under similar circumstances.  Mwenezi MP sit (sic) makata tangatati kuda uyu ane mutupo usingazivikanwi ndiye achazvigona bva zvaramba.”
Omar became MP this year after winning a by-election to replace Joshua ‘Mazebra’ Moyo who died in December last year after a long time of fighting what was said to be a mysterious illness.
Omar is on a one week tour at six points in the district, with a beast being slaughtered at each gathering to celebrate his election victory while reassuring supporters that he will keep his promise to develop the constituency.local
