MASVINGO – The California-based Davis Sunrise Rotary Club last week donated a borehole to Manunure High School as a way of contributing to the provision of clean water in rural Masvingo.
The execution of the US $5 943 project as well as the handover ceremony was overseen by the Rotary Club of Masvingo.
Some 10 000 litre storage tanks, pump, generator and taps were installed to all households and several taps are being connected to classroom blocks.
Speaking during the handover ceremony, Manunure High School head Svondo Chiwawa said the donation will take them a long way in guaranteeing safe drinking water even when the school hosts big events.
“Water had been a problem here for a long time. We shared one borehole with Machitanda Primary School and the community; ward 17 in particular which has three villages namely Tami, Mukwerete and Mushawasha.
“Now that we have water, we can also do projects like gardening so that the school can make extra income for further development. We had stopped hosting big sporting events that are on our school calendar because our toilets had no running water,” Chiwawa said.
Sebena Lodhi, a representative from the Davis Sunrise Rotary Club, said the club recognised the importance of water in the creation of more opportunities.
“Besides a healthy life for the people, projects can also be done when there is a reliable water supply. The development has also enabled us to partner Tose Foundation in a project by which we teach pupils how to make reusable sanitary pads,” said Lodhi.
Councillor Edison Manyawi thanked Rotary Club for the donation and encouraged the beneficiaries to avail the water to the wider community.
“We have shared one water source for long and knowing how water is a challenge to the surrounding community, I plead with authorities to have a tap where the community can draw water from,” Manyawi said.local
