Party supporters boo Gumbo, disrupt PCC meeting
17 MPs plot to humiliate Hungwe, Mahofa

TellZim Reporters

23 Feb 2017
– Zanu PF is literally burning in Masvingo province – the home of factionalism – with the G40 and Team Lacoste factions engaging in ugly fights as they select the new provincial executive today (Thursday).
There was drama at the Masvingo Showgrounds on Sunday during the Provincial Coordinating Committee when newly-appointed acting Masvingo provincial chairperson, Jorum Gumbo came face to face with factionalism.
Gumbo was chairing the PCC meeting but G40 sympathisers booed him before breaking into song and dance to protest against Gumbo’s supposed bias towards Team Lacoste.
Gumbo had to abruptly stop the meeting in order to avoid further chaos.
The youth and members of the women’s league fervently sang the contentious Kumagumo kune nyaya song as if to tell Gumbo that a harmonious end was not a given.
It was party national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere who rescued Gumbo when he stood up to make clarifications and additions to what Gumbo had said.
Gumbo wanted only three people from Masvingo’s seven districts to vote for the executive saying it was impossible for all members in the district structures to vote.
However, it was Kasukuwere’s intervention which brought joy to the G40 faction when he said all the 120 district members would be allowed to vote.
It all started when Gutu South legislator, Dr Paul Chimedza stood up and asked Gumbo to clarify on the composition of the electoral college.
Gumbo tried to evade the question but Dr Chimedza insisted that he be answered. A visibly angry Gumbo threatened Dr Chimedza and asked him to sit down but in an open display of defiance, more MPs stood up in support of Dr Chimedza.
Bikita South MP Jeppy Jaboon tried in vain to be given a chance to make a contribution during the deliberations as Masvingo West MP Ezra Chadzamira, who is the Team Lacoste candidate for chairmanship, kept on pulling him down. As a result Jaboon spent half of the time seated on Chadzamira’s lap as the two fought to stop each other from making contributions.
A day before the chaotic PCC meeting, a total of 17 MPs aligned to the G40 had held a closed door meeting at Flamboyant Hotel where they planned to humiliate Team Lacoste kingpins; Josaya Hungwe and Shuvai Mahofa.
The guest of honour at the meeting was politburo member Daniel Shumba who is also MP for Masvingo Urban. Retired Colonel Mutero Johanne Masanganise, who is the G40 candidate for chairmanship, was given time to explain what he was going to do once elected chairperson.
On the other hand, Team Lacoste held two meetings, one in Chivi while the other one was hosted by Shuvai Mahofa at her Rhodene home.
The Thursday polls will see the stronger faction taking over the provincial leadership.politics

Gweru, Masvingo reject constitution amendment

22 Feb 2017 – GWERU – Residents of Gweru and Masvingo have vehemently rejected the proposed first amendment to the Constitution of Zimbabwe saying the bill would give too much power to the President if it sails through.
Speaking at a Fortune Chasi-led Parliamentary Portfolio Committee engagement meeting held at Gweru Theatre on Monday, residents said the proposed amendments were undemocratic.
“I am surprised government wants to curtail the orderly interview processes of the JSC (Judicial Service Commission) in the appointment of the Chief Justice. This is an attempt to consolidate the dictatorship,” said one Vincent Muhari.
Another participant accused the Ministry of Justice of attempting to undermine constitutional limitations to executive authority.
“The President must not be anywhere near the selection of the Chief Justice. The JSC should hold interviews and the best should be appointed Chief Justice,” said another participant.
At the Civic Centre in Masvingo, residents booed committee leader Ziyambi Ziyambi, saying the committee must remove President Robert Mugabe first before they can fiddle with the young constitution.
“Before amending the constitution, you should remove Mugabe and his government because no one is happy with him. Why search for mistakes when no one is complaining? Deal with real issues.
“Go and tell police to arrest robbers terrorizing this country and stop stealing and killing people at roadblocks. You are sleeping in hotels wasting money doing useless consultations. Use the money to fix potholes along Masvingo-Betbridge road instead.
“You know that 2018 is around the corner so you want to rig elections again and use a pliant Chief Justice to rule in your favour. Just go back and tell whoever sent you that Masvingo said stop it now,” said one angry participant.
The Masvingo Human Rights Trust (MHRT) has also released a statement condemning the proposed changes.
“MHRT is disheartened by the apparent voracious appetite by the government to amend the law of the land just over three years since it became operational on 22 August 2013 but is at the same time lethargic with regards to the alignment of various laws to the same constitution,” MHRT said.
The bill partly says “The Chief Justice…of the High Court shall be appointed by the President after consultation with the JSC…Provided that, for the avoidance of doubt, it is declared that the decision of the President as to such appointment shall be final.”

22 Feb 2017 – MASVINGO – City of Masvingo has resolved to spend more than half a million US dollars to purchase 15 vehicles for deputy directors and for other uses, TellZim News can reveal.
Masvingo City Town Clerk confirmed through his office representative that the Finance Committee meeting held on February 23, 2017 resolved that the Isuzu open trucks and Mazda BT 50 club cabs have been procured from Pazza Busters and Willowvale Motors respectively.
“Council is set to buy new vehicles eight of which will be service vehicles and five for deputy directors. The total cost of the vehicles is US$514 900 and they will soon be delivered to the local governing authority,” Gusha’s office said.
TellZim News is reliably informed that council management and councillors clashed at some point with councillors insisting that service delivery vehicles be given priority.
“Management and councillors clashed over this issue during the previous full council meeting committee session where councillors were of the opinion that service vehicles should come first.
“We do not know what they have decided as of now but councillors stood firm vehicles for deputy directors should come after the procurement of service vehicles noting that council is there to serve the community and should prioritise things that benefit the community first,” a source said.
City of Masvingo has been on a spending spree despite huge service shortfalls which include the incomplete and now forgotten Mucheke Trunk Sewer project.
Last week, TellZim News reported how he council had paid about US$100 000 to Treasure Consultants Limited and Ncube Burrow (Pvt) Ltd to settle a land servicing dispute.local, top stories

19 Feb 2017 – MWENEZI – Despite accepting all pupils who look for a secondary school place, including those that would not have done so well in their Grade Seven exams, Mwenezi Government High School has exceeded all expectations and achieved an overall 58 percent pass rate in the 2016 ‘O’ Level exams.
The results are a huge improvement for Mwenezi Government High School because in the 2015 ‘O’ Level exams, the school registered a 48 percent pass rate.
Many public schools are grappling with inadequate resources but over the years, Mwenezi Government High School has progressively built a reputation of making the best of the little that is available.
If anything, the results testify to the fact that dedication to hard work, and not the availability of resources alone, is the recipe for a successful academic grooming process.
Mwenezi Government High School head; Mr C Chuma said the school is looking forward to build upon their current successes and elevate the name of Mwenezi Government High School to greater heights.
“We are happy with these results that we worked very hard for. They serve as a motivation for the school to continue striving for even better results that we know can only come through hard work and improving the conditions of learning,” said Chuma.
Of the five pupils who did exceptionally well; the highest was Hlanalani Chauke who wrote 10 subjects and obtained ten As. He was followed by four others with 9 As each, one being a girl.
The headmaster thanked all staff members for working together and playing their respective roles to create the current success story.
“Unlike other schools, we are not selective in our enrolment process; we accommodate everyone. I therefore give credit to all our staff members for this well-deserved success,” said Chuma.education

Blessing Chibvongodze sat for her Maths, Integrated Science and Commerce exams in November 2016 and passed all the subjects.
Earlier on in June, Chibvongodze had written four other subjects to gauge her preparedness and passed all of them and is now looking forward to continue with her education at ‘A’ Level.
“I am proud of Fern Valley Academy for giving me excellent learning conditions. The teachers are excellent and so are the facilities. I can’t think of any other school where one can have better learning conditions,” said Chibvongodze.
Fern Valley Academy principal, Luckson Ndlovu said he was delighted that the first fruits of the school’s hard work are already becoming visible.
“We have a culture of hard work at Fern Valley and we are particular about the quality of education that our children receive. The sky is the limit for us as we move forward to grow our brand,” said Ndlovu.
Located in the new suburb of Victoria Ranch, Fern Valley opened its door in January 2016 but has quickly risen as one of the best schools with excellent facilities.education

19 Feb 2017 – MASVINGO – The Ministry of Tourism and Hospitality Management last week issued certificates to trained personnel who are working at Chesvingo- Karanga Cultural Village which, alongside the Great Zimbabwe monuments, will give tourists more room to experience the Karanga people’s traditional way of life.
The ministry of tourism in partnership with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) trained the personnel in marketing, basic accounting, food preparation and tour guiding.
The cultural village is described as a centre for the preservation of Karanga culture for present and future generations. It was established in 1992 but faced enormous challenges until JICA came on board and supported its resuscitation.
Director of Domestic Tourism in the ministry, Irvin Murombedzi praised Japan for redefining tourism and its support for the Chesvingo – Karanga Cultural Village project.
“Japan has taken tourism to new levels and it doing very well in that regard. That is why we have taken a leaf from them. The tourists who visit this place will be taken care of and will pay for the services and, at the end, the community benefits,” said Murombedzi.
He said the project was motivated by the desire to expose traditional cultural practices to people who yearn for such treats.
“As a ministry, we are saying let’s diversify tourism. People must not just come to visit Great Zimbabwe monuments, Victoria Falls, Kariba and other tourist destinations. They can also go further and appreciate the cultural aspects of our people,” said Murombedzi.
He said the cultural village presented a good opportunity for tourist to experience the best of the culture of local people.
Japanese ambassador to Zimbabwe, Yoshi Tendai Hiraishi, who graced the occasion, expressed awe for the traditional Karanga lifestyle as embodied by the cultural village.
“This is a very memorable day and I am so proud to be associated with this project and its good people,” said Hiraishi who also promised the Japanese government’s support for the upliftment of the people of Zimbabwe.
Chesvingo- Karanga Cultural Village is located on a hill top overlooking Lake Mutirikwi, 40 kilometres from Masvingo city and 10 kilometres from the monuments along the main road.news

The washed away Chingami bridge

Shumirai Zhou in Mberengwa

19 Feb 2017 – MBERENGWA – Masase area in Mberengwa West is facing yet another dire farming season, but this time not because of lack of rainfall, but because of too much of it; a situation which has led to the destruction of whole fields and the endangering of human life due to floods.
Speaking to TellZim News, residents of Masase said that Yengai Dam is flooded and their fields have been destroyed because of incessant rainfall.
“The heavy rains resulted in Yengai Dam getting flooded; our fields and crops have been damaged. All our maize, vegetables and sugarcane have been destroyed. We have toiled in vanity,” said one villager.
Other villagers with destroyed crops said the food situation in the area was unlikely to improve from what it was last year when the El Nino-induced drought laid to waste vast farmlands.
Students from both Masase High and Primary schools who have to cross rivers to get to school have missed many days of school because the rivers are flooded.
Masase Primary School head, Velaphi Shava recently told parents that the safety of children must come first before all else.
The engine which pumps water to Masase High School was also reported to be among the property that has been destroyed and the boarding school now facing erratic water supplies as it now has to rely solely on a single borehole.
Meanwhile, heavy downpours in Mwenezi district have washed away Chingami bridge which links Mwenezi Government High School and Chingami Primary School.
The worst affected areas in Mwenezi are under chiefs, Neshuro, Maranda, Mawarire and Murove.
Manyuchi Dam has also overflowed for the first time since Cyclone Eline of year 2000, resulting in the flooding of Dinhe bridge which links Mwenezi East and Mwenezi West across Mwenezi River.local

Farmers warned on fall worm

Armyworm on a maize crop

Moses Ziyambi

ZVISHAVANE – Farmers have been warned of the dangers posed to their crops by the fall armyworm, a severely destructive pest that is spread by migratory moths in the rainy season.
Government, through the Plant Protection Research Institute (PPRI), has recently been distributing chemicals to try to contain the fall worm, a foreign strain within the armyworm family, which threatens to destroy thousands of hectarage of crops.
Local agronomist, Clement Chimuti said it was time for farmers to take preventative measures so as to ensure that they do not suffer huge losses to the fall army worm menace.
“There are many chemicals that can help farmers to protect their crops from the fall worm.  It is advisable that farmers use the requisite pesticides when their maize crop is just a few weeks old and when they reach knee-level so that when the moths come, they lay their eggs on top of the pesticides,” said Chimuti.
He advised farmers to make use of such chemicals as Kombat, Carbaryl 85 and Fenvalerate.
“Kombat is particularly recommended for application to crops that are at their knee-level stage of growth. It’s also an effective pesticide against the maize stalkborer while Fenvalerate is also effective against such worms as the spiny bollworm in cotton.
“It is however, better to use preventative pesticides than to try to control the pest when the plant is already affected,” said Chimuti.
The Commercial Farmers Union (CFU) says the fall armyworm has been persistent mostly on irrigated maize crop as it approaches tasselling stage.
In Raffingora, CFU says, fall armyworm is widespread on irrigated and rain-fed maize crop at different levels of growth.
In its larval stage, the pest is comparable to the locust for its devastating impact on crops. It also breeds rapidly and is difficult to detect.
The fall armyworm has also hit Zvishavane, Shurugwi, Gokwe South, Gweru, Kwekwe districts of Midlands, according to PPRI.agriculture

19 Feb 2017 – ZVISHAVANE – A child-headed family in Maglas was recently rescued by Zvishavane Youth Centre (ZYC) through the Midlands Aids Coordinating Organisation (MACO) after the poor family had gone for days without food.
The MACO health workers who operate in Maglas took the matter to ZYC having noticed that the family was in dire straits as the parents had abandoned it for South Africa.
The children were given some foodstuffs including maize meal and rice that were sourced by the ZYC and the local Member of Parliament, John Holder.
This was after the Junior MP for the area, Karen Chiwariro appealed to Holder to assist this vulnerable family.
The family comprises three boys, the eldest of whom was supposed to be in Form Six but there is no money for him to continue with his education.
The second is doing Grade Seven while the youngest is in Grade Two but both of them do not have school uniforms and shoes.
Speaking to TellZim News, Clifford Mugiya, who is the ZYC youth coordinator, said he was heartbroken when he saw the children.
“When we visited the family with the Junior MP, Mr Murenga and the teen mothers representative, Modina, I was touched by what I saw. Their skin shows that they are malnourished. The children are not healthy at all,” said Mugiya.
They managed to get 25kg of rice and 10kg of mealie meal. The ZYC team also contributed some food stuffs and cash to help the family.local

Chivhu Methodist Church on clean-up campaign

19 Feb 2019 – CHIVHU – The Methodist Church in Zimbabwe Chivhu Circuit last Saturday embarked on a clean-up campaign which saw church members collecting refuse and litter in a town with pathetic service delivery.
Led by Superintendent Paul Karanda, the faithful took their time to clear huge piles of rubbish some of which had spent weeks without being collected.
Chivhu refuse removal work is done by just one small and old tractor which has to service both the residential areas and the CBD.
Chivhu Circuit Steward Nicholas Mudzinganyama said council own its own cannot do everything.
“Vendors are all over so we have litter. Council on its own cannot afford to do what is enough so as part of the community, we are complementing the work being done by council,” said Mudzinganyama.
Chikomba Rural District Council Chairman, Pardon Mudzimu praised the Methodist Church saying their decision to clean the town was exemplary.
“As council, we are glad to have the Methodist Church doing such wonderful work. We support such activities to make sure that our town is clean and free from diseases such as typhoid,” said Mudzimu.
Ward 12 Councillor, Alderman Munyati, who was part of the clean-up campaign, expressed gratitude to Superintendent Karanda for motivating other congregants.
“This programme was initiated by Methodist Church in Zimbabwe. We alone are not capable so as a councillor, I appreciate the superintendent for the initiative and I encourage the community to learn from the church,” said Munyati.
Another ward councillor, Godfrey Kurebwaseka also praised the church for for showing a strong commitment to public health and cleanliness.
“This town belongs to all of us and we would like to thank the Methodist Church for leading by example with regards to keeping the environment clean,” said Kurebwaseka.religion
