Panellists during the public dialogue from left…Job Sikhala, Jacob Mafume,  Dr Paul Chimedza and Jealousy Mawarire

Moses Ziyambi

10 Feb 2017 – Last week Friday, February 3, 2017, TellZim News and the Community Tolerance and Reconciliation and Development organisation (Cotrad) hosted a public dialogue at Chevron Hotel in Masvingo.
Running under the topic From 2017 by-elections in Bikita West and the upcoming Mwenezi East towards 2018 elections: Has anything changed?, the dialogue had Dr Paul Chimedza of Zanu PF, Jealousy Mawarire of ZimPF, Job Sikhala of MDC-T and Jacob Mafume of PDP as panellists.
Below is the synopsis of what each of the panellists said during the dialogue.

Dr Paul Chimedza – The Gutu South legislator’s message centred mainly on how a party can earn the right to lead the country: contest the elections and win.
“As a party, we are serious about the business of winning elections, and we are serious about the business of getting in power and staying in power because that’s the core business of any political power. In Zanu PF, nothing has changed. We won in Bikita, we are preparing for Mwenezi; we are going to win in Mwenezi, and we are preparing for 2018; and we are going to win again in 2018. So this is what we do in Zanu PF. It is very clear that Zanu PF is serious about staying in power and about elections – we take elections very seriously.
“Some people were saying now we know how Zanu PF rigs….and in Bikita, if they really knew how the rigging takes place as they claim, why didn’t they win? We walloped them.
“It is a fact that no politician in this country whether in Zanu PF or in the opposition, can connect with the people more than President Mugabe. That’s why they don’t want to face him in elections, but they want to use other means; unconstitutional means.
“Hanzi tourawa. Ko muri vapenyu wani. Makadii kufa? MDC won an election, it had the majority in 2008. In the same conditions, they won an election and they had a majority in parliament and we put our act together, came back and worked harder and slashed them in 2013.”
He also took time to mock the opposition for its seeming obsession with the fitness of President Mugabe to hold office.
“What is interesting here, the elephant in the house, is people telling Zanu PF how to run its party; the narrative about President Mugabe this, President Mugabe that. Imimi kaa, kana maita munhu amunofunga kuti is not electable it’s an advantage to you. Use it instead of telling us which president we should put which president we should remove. An electoral democracy is not about age. President Mugabe is there because he resoundingly got the mandate in 2013,” said Dr Cimedza.

Jacob  Mafume – The words of national spokesperson of the People Democratic Party (PDP) found resonance with those of Mawarire.
Mafume emphasised that contestations for political power must not be sorely about a chance for politicians to greedily tuck their snouts into the feeding trough, but must be about serving the people and making Zimbabwe an open society.
“Democracy is not about getting into office and staying there until you drop dead.”
It was not a question that the country had entered a transitional phase but what remains open, he said, is the direction that the transition will take as there still lingers the danger of the country transiting into yet another tyranny hence the need for the people to make sure that the country is steered onto the right transitory path.
“We need not lose this opportunity that we are getting now – Zimbabwe is in a transition, whether it’s transiting to Mnangagwa, whether it’s transiting to the opposition, whether it’s transiting to somebody else. It’s transiting, whether it goes to G40 or it goes to anyone else. What we need is not necessarily to worry, at most times, about who will get power. Sometimes we need to worry about how we live when whoever gets power.”
He made it clear PDP leader, Tendai Biti had the utmost respect for Tsvangirai, whom he credited for an impressive record working for the country since his days in the labour movement.
Mafume also said PDP was solidly behind efforts to present a united front against Zanu PF through a grand coalition of opposition parties as the country wades into barely charted transitional waters.
“We are part of the negotiations formally and informally and some issues will progress fast while others will progress slowly but as a matter of principle, it is there.
“A lot of things need to be changed in our society Zimbabwe; traditional leaders, the army, the police – you know the police are called the Zimbabwe Revenue Police now, they just collect money for a living and they no longer arrest thieves. So a lot of things have to transit,” said Mafume.

Jealousy Mawarire – The People First (ZimPF) national spokesperson said ‘winning elections at all cost’ was the epitome of Zanu PF’s approach to State power and pointed out that ZimPF was not in it merely for power, but to transform Zimbabwe.
“Ndakachema kuti a whole president wekuUganda hanzi ‘I am not your servant. If you think you gave me a job you are deceiving yourself. I am not anyone’s employee.’ A whole president who was voted by the people? This is the same mentality inana Dr Chimedza. Yekuti isu tongohwinha maelections chete hatina basa nekuti maelections acho tahwinha tadzinganisa vanhu vaenda kuSouth Africa, tadzinganisa vanhu vaenda kuUK, tadzinganisa vana vashambira vamwe vashambira vachidyiwa nengwena. Hatizivi kuti ngwena dzacho ndivana Mnangagwa here dzinenge dzichidya muna Limpopo. No we are not going to do that.
“We want a leadership that has people at heart. That’s why we say we are People First. That’s why we say we are national democrats. That’s why we say we are here to change things in Zimbabwe, to create equal opportunities for everyone.”
Mawarire also assured Zimbabweans that the mooted grand opposition coalition to defeat Zanu PF at the 2018 elections “is there.”
“Fundamentally we believe that the coalition will quantify votes against Zanu PF, and the coalition also will help us to harness the different craft competencies from among our people so that when we form a new government, we have a government that has different competencies and we exploit on those competencies to turn around the economy of the country.
“So the coalition is there, and we are going to field a single presidential candidate and the other modalities about constituency representatives are still being negotiated and at the right time, we are going to tell you how we are going to handle the idea of the different electoral constituencies that we have in terms of representation,” said Mawarire.

Job ‘Wiwa’ Sikhala – The MDC-T National Executive member was full of praise for his boss Morgan Tsvingirai and expressed optimism that opposition will find each other and form a united front against Zanu PF.
“What we know is that the authority to negotiate the issue of a coalition, we gave it to our President, Dr Morgan Tsvangirai, for him to find political organisations that he thinks add value to the Zimbabwean project; to make sure that Zimbabwe becomes an open society like what Jacob Mafume just recently said.”
He encouraged people to develop strategies of defiance against Zanu PF even when subjected to the most coercive measures, and he praised the people of Matabeleland for being consistent in defying Mugabe even in face of great persecution.
“We all need to grow the Ndebele mentality whereby from 1980-1987, when Mugabe was killing them and throwing them into mine shafts in their thousands, they went and attended Mugabe’s rallies but come election time, they were always defeated in Matabeleland. Joshua Nkomo entered into the Unity Accord in 1987 when Robert Mugabe was losing Matabeleland home and away. So that is one mentality that we will build into Zimbabweans; that go and pretend to be with them, but your heart must be able to speak.”
Sikhala also deflected criticism against attempts to forge ahead with an alliance of opposition parties, saying misgivings being raised on the inclusion of former Zanu PF members were misplaced.
“There is no reason whatsoever why the people of Zimbabwe cannot believe that the people in People First have been exorcised of the Zanu PF demon, that they are also now interested to work for the common good of the people of Zimbabwe,” said Sikhala.news

Chivi woman raped, murdered

The late Restina Machingura

Cephas Shava in Mwenezi

09 Feb 2017 – CHIVI – A 66-year-old woman was found strangled, murdered and raped by criminals who burgled into her homestead in the early hours of last Tuesday, January 24.
When contacted for comment, Masvingo Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Charity Mazula said she was out of office.
Restinah Machingura, of Pedzisai Village 1 under Chief Madzivire in Chivi, was brutally murdered by ruffians who are still at large.
The victim’s brother, George Muhwenyiyo said the thugs defecated inside the house before leaving.
The rumour mill also has it that the culprits could have been people whom the victim knew who teamed up and intruded into Machingura’s house when her 12-year-old grandson with whom she stayed had gone to school.
Other raltives of the late Maschingura told TellZim News that a visible scar on the forehead on the victim’s lifeless body suggested the hooligans had hit her on the head before tying her on the neck with a string, raping and then murdering her.
They left the crime scene only for Machingura’s swollen body to be discovered by her grandson when he returned from school at around 18:00 hrs.
After fellow villagers were notified, police detectives from Ngundu, Mwenezi and Masvingo attended the scene and Machingura’s body was ferried to Masvingo for post mortem which revealed that she was raped before being murdered.
She was laid to rest last Thursday though her coffin could hardly be properly closed as the body was swollen.news

Food aid must be suspended, says Chief Makumbe

09 Feb 2017 – MURAMBINDA – Food hand-outs which are distributed by the government and various Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are promoting laziness and disharmony in communities, Chief Makumbe, born Steward Hwata has said.
Chief Makumbe was speaking in Matsveru village during the burial of Gideon Bwanya, one the many villagers who have died ‘mysteriously’ in the recent past presumably as a result of witchcraft following disputes over the distributed maize.
Chief Makumbe was furious at the way people have come to rely on government and NGOs for basic commodities, saying the hand-outs have bred laziness with some people not even bothering to till their land despite the abundant rains.
Buhera has numerous cases of people who have either died or ‘gone mad’ after quarreling with other villagers over how the food aid should be sahred, with Bwanya being one of them.
“This is not the first time to experience such incidences; years ago, a family was wiped out all because of these hand-outs. Now we are burying a father – a breadwinner simply because someone thinks they deserve all that is being shared,” said Chief Makumbe.
“We really appreciate the efforts that government and NGOs are making to ensure everyone is well-fed but it’s turning out to be problematic because people don’t want to till their land now. I think the food aid must be stopped a bit,” Chief Makumbe said.news

09 Feb 2017 – The City of Masvingo has added yet another accolade onto their stand by winning the 2016 Best Urban Local Authority in Zimbabwe award during the public sector awards function held in Harare last week.
The awards were sponsored by Stallon Consultancy.
The award given to Masvingo serves as recognition of council as the best-run urban local authority.
Though faced with many challenges, the city council strives to provide optimum services for residents.
Mayor Hubert Fidze said council dedicates the award to the residents and council employees.
“We have been building on our past success story when we won other awards like the Best Communicator as well as the Best Chief Executive Officer (CEO) won by TC Adolf Gusha. We have our residents to thank because they pay the rates for us to perform our duties,” Fidze said.
He also thanked councillors and management for putting politics aside for the public good.
“When it comes to council business, I am proud of our councillors because they put politics aside and focus on service delivery. We are not operating at our 100 percent but we are trying. We are still struggling to pay salaries and we hope things will be alright. We prioritise service delivery over salaries,” said Fidze.news

David Nyakuvengwa in Bikita

09 Feb 2016 – BIKITA – A notorious Bikita thief, Esau Chinoona (45) of Nemananzva village under Chief Ziki, was last week slapped with a 10 – year prison sentence by Bikita Resident Magistrate Caroline Tafira after being convicted of stock theft.
Three months of the sentence was suspended on condition that the accused gives the complaint restitution to the tune of US$375 by February 24, 2017.
His accomplice, Samson Chiparange, was remanded in custody in connection with a previous case.
Chinoona, who was being represented by Walter Mumbijo of Ruvengo Maboke and Partners, pleaded for a lenient sentence, telling the court that he is a father to 23 children of which only three are over 18 years.
Magistrate Tafira dismissed the plea, saying matters of stock theft have a mandatory sentence ranging from nine to 25 years. She however considered that the accused was a first offender.
It was the State’s case that on the November 6, 2016 in Nemanhanzva village, Chinoona,  together with Chiparange, stole six cattle from Flora Chingani and sold them  to Ernest Makonese of Chegwite village under Chief Ziki.
Two heifers are said to have died while being driven after the theft.

Chihuri attacks national pledge

09 Feb 2017 – MASVINGO – Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri last week criticised the controversial national pledge introduced by Minister of Primary and Secondary Education; Lazarus Dokora, saying the policy was dragging pupils into idolatry.
The pledge was vehemently rejected by most Zimbabweans and various Christian organisations but Dokora went ahead and railroaded the pledge.
Speaking in Masvingo during the Commissioner’s Service held at Phoenix in Masvingo, Com-Gen Chihuri warned teachers and headmasters in attendance to safeguard Christian standards which he said were under threat from developments in the Ministry of Education.
“…are there any teachers here? I ask them because I want to warn them of evil that is being spread through initiatives in the education sector which we must stop if we are real Christians. Some of the initiatives are clearly an indication of idolatry,” Chihuri said while quoting scriptures.
“I hear these initiatives come from a semi-bold headed man with a lot of beard but please, don’t listen to him.  If all his initiatives pass, that will be the end of schools grooming children in a Christ-like manner,” Chihuri said.
He also attacked ‘false prophets’ whom he said are misleading the people.news

Disaster at Neshuro Hospital as Paeds shuts down

Cephas Shava in Mwenezi

09 Feb 2017 – MWENEZI – There is growing public concern with the continued closure of the paediatric (Paeds) ward at Neshuro District Hospital two weeks after water shortages worsened at the hospital.
Although Mwenezi District Medical Officer (DMO); Dr Itai Matibiri could not immediately comment as he asked for emailed questions, a visit to the hospital last week showed the problems that have been going on over the past two weeks.
Children were admitted in some of the female wards.
A nurse who spoke on condition of anonymity said the hospital had scaled back on admissions following an order by Provincial Medical Director (PMD), Dr Amadeus Shamu to shut the Paeds section.
“The PMD came here almost a week ago and ordered the closure of Paeds due to inadequate water supply from Zinwa.
“Sometimes we do go for three weeks without receiving any drop of water. So we were ordered to admit only critically ill patients. The number of patients who are being admitted has dropped and children are now sharing wards with ladies,” said the nurse.
The district Civil Protection Unit (CPU) is understood to have convened last Thursday and resolved to mobilise donations so as to end the crises at the hospital.
The hospital’s laundry department is also another area that is said to be in a sorry state as washing machines are reportedly down with workers reportedly hand-washing hospital linen.news

Pastor rescues naked cop from sex worker

09 Feb 2017 – MASVINGO – A married Rujeko Police Station cop who spent the whole night with a sex worker in Mucheke but failed to pay when it was time to go in the morning got a rude awakening after the sex worker held him hostage and gave him loads and loads of dirty clothes and blankets to wash as punishment.
The incident happened at a house close to the Mucheke Bus Terminus last Sunday morning.
The cop only found his saving grace in Ward 1 Councillor Garcia Mundondo who is also an AFM pastor, when he stormed the sex worker’s place to rescue the distraught police officer.
The cop had been ordered to do the laundry to cover up for the US$20 he had failed to pay the sex worker.
When contacted for comment, Cllr Mundondo was unwilling to divulge the information about the incident but he later opened up after some insistence from this reporter.
“The police officer was sent out to do laundry at a sex worker’s home for failure to pay for services. I found him wrapping a cloth around his waist as he did the washing because the sex worker had immersed his uniform in water to prevent him from leaving.
“When the issue came to my attention, I rushed to the scene and tried to negotiate that the cop be set free so that he could go to work but the sex worker refused.
“We had to use force to get him out while he was naked. I then took him to Chikato Police Station where he got something to cover himself and later on proceeded to Rujeko where he was supposed to report for duty,” Mundondo said.
“As a pastor, I would like to urge members of the community especially law enforcers such as the police to fear God and desist from evil acts such as prostitution,” added Mundondo.
Last year, Givemore Marara, a police officer at Masvingo Central Police Station, faced perjury charges in court when he falsely reported that his uniform had been stolen when in fact, he had left it at a sex worker’s place after failing to pay for services rendered.news

ZimPF on fire as Mujuru sacks top leadership

Didymus Mutasa

….Mutasa rejects dismissal
….Bhasikiti says Mujuru has lost her mind
….we will fire her instead, says Makova

Upenyu Chaota

09 Feb 2017 – MASVINGO – Chinua Achebe’s masterpiece, Things Fall Apart, seems to be the best way to describe the chaos that has suddenly erupted in the opposition Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) after party leader, Joice Mujuru chucked out seven members of its top brass who were accused of working against party interests.
Rugare Gumbo, Didymus Mutasa, Margaret Dongo, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti-Chuma, Luckson Kandemiri, Munacho Mutezo and Claudious Makova were summarily fired for, among other things, being agents of the Zanu PF government.
In a press statement issued yesterday, Mujuru accused the seven of having “chosen to be agents of the regime.”
Of late, there have been speculations the seven were blocking current efforts to form a coalition with other opposition parties to dislodge President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF in 2018 and were planning to dismiss Mujuru from the party.
“As a Party, we have decided to take stern measures against elements determined to stall the progress that the party has been making. As a result, we have decided to eject some of the colleagues and comrades we thought would stand with the People’s cause but have chosen to be agents of the regime.
“All sorts of tricks, ranging from coup d’état and sophisticated infiltration, have taken centre stage with a view to delaying the People’s cause of unequivocal liberation,” the statement further reads.
Mujuru said more heads will roll as it was on public record that Mugabe had vowed to divide her party into ‘ZimPF One, Two and so on.”
When contacted for comment, Mutasa rubbished the dismissals as premature.
“Why did she have to make such a decision in the absence of the whole leadership? We are actually going to face her for clarification. We were instead supposed to meet over (Dzikamai) Mavhaire’s demotion. Mavhaire has openly fanned divisions in the party but instead, we hear we have been fired through a private press statement,” said Mutasa.
Bhasikiti also attacked Mujuru saying she had lost her mind and has no power to fire people who appointed her.
“Yes I heard of our dismissal but what is surprising is that Mujuru was appointed by Mutasa and Gumbo to be acting President. So who is she to fire those who appointed her? I think she was just signing her way out of ZimPF not to say she has fired us from the party. NO!
He also accused Mujuru of nepotism saying the former Vice President was surrounding herself with relatives within her Zhou totem.
Makova, who recently resigned as party provincial coordinator after the party performed poorly in the Bikita West by-election, said ZimPF was their brainchild and they will, instead, fire Mujuru herself.
“We cannot let Mujuru play funny factional games with us. We are going to fire her because it’s the people’s voice that talks not the President’s voice.
“Our crime was to tell her the honest truth. We were open with her that we can’t operate with people who have lost the party’s vision. It was this development that Gumbo had gone to confirm at the party office only to be told that Mujuru is holding a press conference at her home to fire us.
“We even tried to groom her to become an ideal leader but she is too stubborn. We wanted her to become like Mugabe who, when he stands and speak, you will feel a leader’s presence. What she has done is a mistake,” Makova said.news

Noah Marima with his wife

TellZim Reporter

05 Feb 2017 – Driven by their motto, Be your own driver, don’t let others drive you, Junior Driving School continues to spread its wings across the province, this time by opening a new branch in Ngundu.
The Ngundu office opened its doors on February 1, 2017 and is located at 40 Maps building near Marufu Hardware.
In Ngundu, Junior Driving School will be offering class one and class two lessons at US$4 and US$8 per lesson respectively.
Junior Driving School director, Noah Marima said their vision is to be the biggest driving school in the southern region hence the continuous expansion.
“We have opened a branch in Ngundu to bring convenience to the people there. We want to make sure that people become their own drivers.
“With the popularity of the automatic vehicles, there is a rise in the number of unlicensed drivers. This should be no problem because here at Junior Driving School, we make sure that those who enrol with us get licences,” said Marima.
He said prospective drivers in Ngundu, just like those in all other districts being serviced by the driving school, will enjoy the convenience of making payments by cash, EcoCash, bank transfers and POS machines.
“Those who will have enrolled with us in Ngundu, will have to come to Masvingo for familiarisation with the city as well as the VID tests. Accommodation will be provided for free by Junior Driving School,” said Marima.
Class one lessons, at the moment, are only available at Junior Driving School’s Masvingo office at US$18 per lesson.news
