17 Feb 2017 – MWENEZI – A 30-year-old traffic police officer was severely assaulted allegedly by a Rutenga businessman at a roadblock some 167 kilometres along the Masvingo-Beitbridge road on Tuesday last week after differences over a spot fine.
The police officer is now said to be nursing shaking teeth as a result of the assault.
Masvingo Provincial Police Acting Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the incident and said the suspect had been arrested and would appear in court on February 20.
The cop, identified as Advance Kaneta and is with the Rutenga traffic post, was allegedly assaulted by Presence Taruvinga after the cop had raised issues of the third number plate for Taruvinga’s Mazda vehicle which was being driven by a man identified only as Mutaro.
Kaneta was said to have been manning the roadblock with three other officers when he stopped Mutaro.
Sources said the officer demanded a US$20 spot fine for the third number plate offence but Mutaro failed to pay as he did not have the money.
Mutaro then called Taruvinga to tell him what was happening and Taruvinga talked with Kaneta over the phone asking to be given a grace period to allow him to pay the fine later.
It is said that Kaneta, however, refused to compromise, with his colleagues telling Taruvinga that they will not let Mutaro go until the spot fine was paid.
Moments later, Taruvinga arrived at the roadblock driving a Toyota vehicle and approached Kaneta and allegedly began to assault him with open hands while other officers watched.
Taruvinga immediately drove off leaving Kaneta and his colleagues but was later arrested.

Gumbo, Mutasa are greedy, barren: Mujuru

Joice Mujuru

16 Feb 2017 – MASVINGO – In her first public address after kicking out party heavyweights, among them Dydmus Mutasa and Rugare Gumbo, ZimPF leader Joyce Mujuru said the duo made working together impossible through their ‘chauvinistic’ tendencies.
During a Provincial Executive meeting held at Lee’s Inn Hotel over the weekend, Mujuru said the two wanted to use her as a people-gathering machine and then dump her.
“When I was asked to lead People First, I said God, party iyi haina kutangirwa kuti vamwe vanhu vaite business nayo. Ipapo ndipo pandakatanga kuenda at crossroads with Gumbo and Mutasa and that’s why you heard of the Chirenje faction. All they requested in meetings were cars and other luxuries.
“As they saw my resistance, they told me they wanted me to be queen bee. Kundiita zimai reshwa kana zimai renyuchi rinoita basa rekungokandira mazai because they knew my strength of luring people. I then simply told them if they had used other women (before,) they would never do that with me and that didn’t go well with them,” Mujuru said.
“What am bringing across is that these guys wanted to lure people who loved my leadership and brand then later on dump me,” she said.
Describing Gumbo and Mutasa as ‘chauvinistic’, Mujuru also said the two politically ‘barren’.
“Some of them are coming out clear they don’t want to be led by a lady but please, let me tell you this, male chauvinism is bad. They even wanted to instruct me like their wife but at some point, I had to raise a voice and told them no one has brought his wife here and I simply asked for respect,” Mujuru said.
Mujuru also defended Dzikamai Mavhaire against recent criticism that he was causing divisions in the party.
Former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) vice president Samuel Sipepa Nkomo urged Mujuru to safeguard the party’s name from the fired members.
“I want to say Gumbo and Mutasa are gone but let’s not concentrate on them. We must focus on the future of ZimPF. What is going to be very critical is who will start a convention. They should not go ahead of us. Let’s have a preemptive convention.
“Once we get to the convention, let’s focus on the name because it’s not their name. It’s our name,” Nkomo said.politics

Omar wins Mwenezi East Zanu PF primaries

Joosbi Omar

Cephas Shava in Mwenezi

16 Feb 2017 – MWENEZI – G40 has yet again won a decisive factional battle against Team Lacoste after the group successfully hoodwinked its rivals into endorsing Joosbi Omar who then went ahead and won the Zanu PF primaries held on Tuesday to select a candidate to represent the party in the upcoming Mwenezi East by-election.
It is suspected that Omar has all along been fighting from the G40 trenches but the faction’s functionaries are said to have cunningly duped Team Lacoste by allowing Omar to adopt a false Lacoste identity merely for the purpose of getting him endorsed by the rival faction.
“Team Lacoste was sold a dummy; they were made to rally behind a wolf who is smartly dressed in a sheep skin. Mark my words, as soon as he becomes MP, Omar will rip off the veil and show his true identity,” said a source who said he was privy to the developments.
A suspicious provincial affairs minister Shuvai Mahofa, who is said to be fronting Team Lacoste herself, was the first to raise the red flag over Omar when she recently told a gathering at an inter-district meting held in Nemamwa that if one wanted to snoop over G40, they should just engage Omar whom she said was vacillating between the factions.
If these claims are anything to go by, this becomes G40’s second victory in a row after the faction successfully pushed forward a suspected sympathiser, Beauty Chabaya, in last month’s Bikita West by-election.
Omar won the primaries by a total of 5 901 out of a total of 11 986 votes cast, over 4 500 votes ahead of his nearest rival, Marvellous Chifumuro, who scored 1 434 in a crowded field with a total of 13 contestants.
On the third place was Patrick Mandebvu with 1 338 while Jabulani Mberesi came fourth with 1 222. Cuthbert Webster Muzara came a distant fifth with a paltry 543 votes.
Omar suffered a heavy setback only in Chifumuro’s home area of Sagwari where he scored a measly 72 against Chifumuro’s 878 votes.
This was, however, not enough to derail Omar’s ambitions to ultimately clinch the nomination after many years of trying and failing.
In 2008, Omar lost to Tongai Matutu of the MDC in the his bid to become Masvingo Urban legislator and lost to Daniel Shumba in the primaries ahead of the 2013 national elections.
In 2015, his CV to contest in the primaries after then Zanu PF Mwenezi East legislator Kudakwashe Bhasikiti had been fired was rejected and the seat went to Joshua ‘Mazebra’ Moyo who however died in December last year.
Omar’s win was greeted with wild celebrations by his supporters in such places as Rutenga and Neshuro with some of them saying his victory was inevitable.
Omar’s campaign manager, Knocks Mutsambwa thanked supporters for showing their faith in Zanu PF and in Omar.
After the nomination court, which sits at Masvingo Magistrates Court on Friday, Omar will officially square it off against Bhasikiti – who is claiming to be representing the opposition ZimPF – in the by-election scheduled for April 8.
Other candidates who took place in the primary elections are Elvanos Dube 351, Timittah Henning Chishamba 251, Francis Mapisa 244, Elliam Moyo 152, Sifana Ngavaite 90, Takura Mudavose 77, Dickson Mazivire 55 and Sikhulekile Moyo 44.politics

…2018 elections do or die

Upenyu Chaota

16 Feb 2017 – MASVINGO – Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) leader Morgan Tsvangirai said he will lead the united front against President Robert Mugabe in the 2018 elections while other opposition parties will be given positions as per the input they bring to the table.
Tsvangirai was speaking at his party’s provincial offices to wrap up his three days of consultative meetings with key stakeholders and the grassroots in the province.
The veteran opposition leader assured his supporters that his 17-year old fight against Zanu PF will culminate in him leading the opposition coalition once it is formed.
In Bikita and Zaka, Tsvangirai said, the issue of partnering Joice Mujuru in the coalition was met with mixed feelings as a great deal of supporters expressed reservations on accommodating somebody who was part and parcel of the system during the violence of 2008.
Tsvangirai said his party will work with all progressive opposition parties that share the vision of seeing a better Zimbabwe for everyone.
He however seemed to confirm widely-held observations that if he fails to win next year’s election, that would be the end of his political career.
“We are working on a coalition with all other opposition parties so that we can confront Mugabe and his Zanu PF in a do or die 2018 election.
“The people have suffered enough and we have been fighting the system for a long time. In 2008, we came very close but in 2018, victory is certain. We do not want to leave anything to chance hence the need for a collective effort by all opposition parties,” said Tsvangirai.
He said Zimbabweans were left with only ‘one bullet’ which they cannot afford to squander in their long battle to free themselves from the Zanu PF albatross.
He warned smaller and upstart opposition parties to respect those who have been fighting the system for longer, saying there will be an evaluation of every one so as to determine the political worth of each.
“Mugabe knows he does not stand a chance with Tsvangirai in a free and fair election. We cannot trust the top post to anyone else. Others have to wait in line,” said Tsvangira to a round of applause.
He said they have won many parliamentary seats and control all urban councils but have not yet won the grand prize onto which Mugabe is clinging, tooth and nail.
“We want the highest office because that is where decisions that affect our people are made. We will be able to better the people’s lives if we win the presidency,” he said.
Tsvangirai equated the frenzied interest in who would lead the coalition to a story of a man who was walking and saw some people gathered.
The man inquired what was going on and was told there was an election to elect a chairperson so the man said he too wanted to be the chairperson.
“When you arrive at a place, you wait to get acquainted not to jump the line and want to run the affairs. You have to let those you found in the area run the affairs while you learn,” said Tsvangirai.politics

US condemns rights violations

13 Feb 2017 – The United States has expressed concern over the continuing deterioration of the human rights situation in Zimbabwe and urged government to respect the rights of all citizens as enshrined in the country’s constitution.
In a statement released last week, the United States embassy slammed the “unwarranted arrest and continued detention of pastor Evan Mawarire and the incarceration of pastor Phillip Patrick Mugadza.”
“The United States government unequivocally believes in the basic right to freedom of speech and calls on the government of Zimbabwe to respect the human rights of all Zimbabwean citizens which are enshrined in the constitution.
“We believe that the basic right of Zimbabweans to freedom of speech – be it in public, through print media or social media – should be protected within and outside Zimbabwe’s borders,” the statement reads.
The embassy called on the government to respect the rule of law and legal due processes as provided for by the constitution.
“We fear these recent actions will further limit the right of Zimbabweans to exercise their constitutionally protected freedoms of expression and peaceful assembly, which are similarly protected under Zimbabwe’s international human rights obligations and are core values of any functioning democracy,” the statement reads.local

Madzivire also spoke well about how the inspection process was being conducted and expressed optimism that she will win.

13 Feb 2017 – MWENEZI – A 27-year-old Mwenezi man is battling for his life at Neshuro District Hospital after he was injured in a freak accident while offloading cement from a delivery truck.
Phinias Chauke of Mukahamari village, Chief Neshuro, sustained spinal injuries after the truck’s side trailer hit him below the chest while offloading the commodity at Chingwanga Hardware, Neshuro growth point, a few weeks ago.
While trying to open the truck load, Chauke was hit by the side door of the truck whose load was reportedly made-up of more than 600 bags of cement.
As a result Chauke collapsed and some bags of cement fell on top of him.
He was initially transferred from Neshuro hospital to Masvingo General Hospital from where he was again referred to United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) and later on to Parerenyatwa Hospital where he underwent surgery and discharged.
His condition has however deteriorated of late and he has developed deep sores on his backside and legs. His family took him back to Neshuro District Hospital where he is currently admitted but is not able to walk or bend.
Speaking to TellZim News while in hospital, Chauke said he was now indebted to the hospitals yet he has not recovered.
“At UBH we left an unpaid hospital bill of more than US$1000 and at Parerenyatwa we owe more than $1400. At Masvingo General and here at Neshuro, I am not sure but the bills are very high,” said Chauke.
“The only hospital bill that was paid was the $1500 that was raised through contributions of my family members and parents.  We also received $230 from Chingwanga,” Chauke added.
Chingwanga’s Neshuro branch manager, Richard Murwei referred all questions to his boss, Gerald Mapurisa.
Mapurisa acknowledged Chauke’s miserable condition but said his organisation had contributed to make sure he recovers and said he will brief his bosses in Chiredzi on the way forward.
Back-breaking and dangerous yet poorly paid piece jobs of offloading trucks have become the only hope for the unemployed young men in Mwenezi.local
