Mahofa urges army to take over

Itai Muzondo

Masvingo – The Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Shuvai Ben Mahofa on Monday pleaded with the Zimbabwe Defense Forces (ZDF) to take control and restore political sanity as the ruling party is currently engulfed in bitter factional wars.
Addressing scores of people gathered to witness the handover of Chingwizi Clinic to government, Mahofa said politicians are good at nothing but talking rubbish and urged ZDF Commander, General Constatine Chiwenga, who was present at the event, to intervene.
“Chiwenga, usateerera isu mapoliticians isu mapoliticians tinongorotomoka tichigona kuuraya nyika. Ndoda kukusimbisai kuti control this country nokuti kuti ive zvairi nhasi, yakabva kwamuri,” (So today I simply want to tell Chiwenga that don’t listen to us politicians. We are big mouthed and our words can destroy the nation. You are the owners of the nation, as for us, we are done. I urge you today to take control of the nation because you are the same people who brought it to where it is today),” Mahofa said to loud applause.
“Our army is one of the best armies in the world and has managed to maintain peace in Zimbabwe. Look at how they have even partnered with this community in advancing health care through the construction of this clinic. They have also made a mark by doing good deeds beyond borders. Whenever we find peace prevailing, it’s because of the army’s commendable work,” she added.
Mahofa call to for the army to take control of the country come at the backdrop of rampant speculation that the security sector sympathises with ‘Team Lacoste’ faction which supports Vice President Emerson Mnangagwa to take over from Mugabe.
Mnangagwa has recently come under increasing fire after Mandi Chimene publicly called for his ouster for allegedly plotting to overthrow President Mugabe. He however, refuted the allegations saying he was not the leader of Team Lacoste.
Mahofa is also under pressure from the rival Generation 40 (G40) faction which says she has not ministerial material as citing her unimpressive academic credentials.
She was recently left embarrassed after her political enemies revealed she has nothing but a knitting certificate.

Masvingo CSO’s land court victory over banned demo

Itai Muzondo

Masvingo – (CSO’s) have landed a court victory to carry out demonstrations against the worsening economic conditions in the country after successfully challenging a police directive that barred them from protesting against bad governance.
The ruling has overturned a police refusal to grant permission to Anoziva Muguti of the Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Alliance (MURRA) and Zivanai Muzorodzi of Community Tolerance Reconciliation and Development Trust (COTRAD) to carry out peaceful demonstrations in the city on June 16, 2016.
“Authority has not been granted in terms of section 26(1) of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) Chapter 11:17″. For security reasons, applicant should not hand over petition to council,” read part of the police order denying the CSO’s permission to carry out their peaceful demonstration.
Zimbabwe Republic Police’s (ZRP) defence council told the court that they had not out-rightly denied the application, arguing that their application had clashed with other big events thus leaving the police with limited manpower.
“On the same date that applicants wanted to carry out their procession, there was an Open Day programme held by the Law Society of Zimbabwe at Masvingo Civic Centre where police had been deployed. More police officers were also seconded to proceed to Chivi where preparation for the burial of a Liberation War Hero, Dr Samuel Mumbengegwi was to take place on July 19, 2016,” states part of the defence argument.
The court ruling however dismissed the defendant’s excuses and granted the CSO’s permission to hold peaceful demonstrations and further instructed police to pay all legal costs faced by applicants in seeking justice.
“The application in terms of section 27B of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA), Chapter 11:17 be herby granted. The respondent to pay costs of suit on attorney/ client scale,” read part of the ruling.
MURRA and COTRAD were represented by Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) Attorney, Martin Mureri.
Masvingo Magistrate Lyn Manyika presided over the matter.news

CIO operative causes stir in council chambers

0

Itai Muzondo

Masvingo – In an act of ignorance and probably lack of knowledge and overzealousness, a member of the Central Intelligent Organisation (CIO) caused stir when she forced herself into a council’s committee meeting, a development that resulted in some councillors threatening to boycott the Full Council Meeting last week.
Members of the public are usually allowed to attend Full Council Meetings and asked to leave when they turn into committees.
The female CIO operative (name withheld) from Masvingo district offices, however, would have none of it demanding to stay saying she has every right to attend any meeting in the country even in people’s bedrooms.
Speaking to TellZim News soon after the meeting, councillors explained that committee meeting proceedings require members of the public to excuse themselves to allow city fathers and council management to debate issues they feel should not be ‘blown out of proportion’.
Mayor Hubert Fidze confirmed the development and hastened to say committee meetings should be only between councilors and council management.
“We disagreed on whether the state security agent should or should not be present in a meeting which is deemed private. We could not reach any position to send her out but instead instructed the acting chamber secretary to find out who is supposed to be where and at what time during full council procedures. Very soon we will have a full account of who is allowed and who is not allowed to follow proceedings of committee proceedings,” Fidze said.
Ward 4 councillor; Godfery Kurauona was not happy with the development saying council should not break their guidelines to serve interests of a few.
“Since I got into council, it has been a set guideline that committee does not allow non-council officio. The move to accept a state agent amused me and was forced to question what was special about her that made her stay.
“If some non-council members are allowed, why are journalists not allowed then? As she acted as the state’s watchdog, journalists would have stood as the community’s watchdog making their roles equally important. Council should just follow given guidelines and if broken, it should be equally done to accommodate all,” Kurauone challenged.
“That was a very wrong move. As councilors, we could not just ignore something like that happening so we are yet to get clarification before the next full council meeting or else no one should be sent out when council turns into committee.”
Ward 10 councillor, Lovemore Mufamba, however, supported the agent’s stay saying there was nothing special committee discussed which the President’s office would not get hold of.
“I wonder why people fight over such an easy issue. These guys can always get the information which you say you would have discussed in private so I do not see the reason for you sending them out when council turns to committees. It’s the same case with journalists; we always see issues discussed privately in committees being published. What is needed rather is clarification on who should or should not be present in committee debates,” Mufamba said.news

Battle lines drawn in Bikita

Upenyu Chaota

Bikita – Battle lines have been drawn in Bikita as Zanu PF factions, Team Lacoste and Generation 40 (G40) compete to outdo each other in the race to replace former Bikita West legislator, Dr Munyaradzi Kereke whose constituency fell vacant after he was last month sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for raping his niece.
Kereke was suspected of having been in the beleaguered Team Lacoste faction, which is breathing a sigh of relief after five of its suspected frontmen in the province, who include Lovemore Matuke and Paul Mangwana, survived a determined G40 plot to boot them out of the party last weekend.
The much awaited by-elections attracted 10 candidates who have since submitted their Curriculum Vitae (CVs) for vetting, among them the much hyped Elias Musakwa who lost dismally to Kereke in the July 31, 2013 elections.
Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chairperson, Amasa Nhenjana confirmed receipt of 10 CVs and said they have since selected the eligible candidates to go for party primaries in few weeks’ time.
“You know one cannot just wake up and say he or she wants to contest without going through certain party processes. We carried out vetting process in a transparent manner and only six out of 10 candidates sailed through and they will battle it out in the primaries to be held soon.
“Elias Musakwa, Everson Machaya, Wellington Mutisi and Tichaona Mandebvu were disqualified because they failed to meet the criteria. Musakwa was disqualified on indiscipline grounds; he vanished with party vehicle and, to date, we don’t know where that car is. Musakwa again stopped participating in party programmes and he only resurfaced now when there is a by-election,” said Nhenjana.
The approved six candidates are Gibson Mashingaidze, Beauty Chabaya, Joshua Dhewa, Jeffry Murire, Douglas Makuku and Simon Masosomere.
Some Zanu PF insiders, however, alleged that the vetting was not without factional bias with those believed to have G40 sympathies sailing through, while those from a rival faction, Team Lacoste getting disqualified.
“Team Lacoste lost the battle; the selection panel consisted of G40 fanatics and they chose mainly candidates from their faction,” said a source.
Nhenjana, a G40 rumoured sympathiser, dismissed the allegations and insisted that the vetting was done transparently. He said the trio of Machaya, Mutisi and Mandebvu were disqualified because have not served the party for at least five years.
“The vetting was done in a transparent manner; those disqualified failed to meet the criteria. We are currently working on the dates for the primaries,” said Nhenjana.
The winner is likely to go uncontested as opposition parties Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) and Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) have expressed no interest in contesting the seat.news

Clerics seek to facilitate anti-Mugabe coalition

Itai Muzondo

MASVINGO – The Christian Voice International – Zimbabwe (CZI), a grouping of various Christian organisations, has written to opposition political parties in an effort to facilitate a grand coalition which will enable them to topple President Robert Mugabe out of power.
The organisation confirmed having written to MDC-T, Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF), Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Transform Zimbabwe and MDC-N.
In the letter, the organisation argues that only a united opposition can address the nation’s plight including human rights abuses and severe poverty.
“CVI-Z believes that one of the major roles of the church in society is to mediate, prevent and manage conflict among disputing parties with the prime objective to restore sanity and uphold peace, human dignity, sanctity and human rights for a prosperous and united nation.
“We therefore submit to you that our wider representative of the clergy in Zimbabwe felt compelled to take up this initiative to mediate between democratic parties to form a formidable force with the objective to alleviate poverty among masses of Zimbabwean citizens presently subjected to gross sufferings and human rights abuses.”
“CVI-Z invites your esteemed political party to the noble cause of a grand coalition of which you are an integral part in the Zimbabwean political landscape, taking into cognizance your different political backgrounds and clout yet for the sake of the love for Zimbabweans and the spirit of nationhood we believe a possible compromise is achievable,” the letter reads.
Speaking to TellZim News, CVI-Z President Tafumanei Zenda said upon receiving the letter, political parties have shown enthusiasm about the idea.
He said they are yet to come up with a date on when all political leaders will be brought under one roof.
“All opposition parties have shown enthusiasm in joining forces against Mugabe. What is left for us is to bring them under one roof. We have not yet fixed a date for the engagement  because we still have to do a one on one follow up to those letters,” Zenda said.
At the funeral of former Masvingo mayor Femious Chakabuda, MDC-T President Morgan Tsvangirai openly urged ZimPF fire-brand, Dzikamai Mavhaire that they should consider merging if they are serious about removing Mugabe from power.news

St Antony’s pupils push for head ouster

Itai Muzondo

ZAKA – The  current wave of resistance and protesting in the country has not spared St Antonys’ High (Musiso) pupils who have recently formed a group known as ‘Santos Boko Haram’ which is writing anonymous letters threatening to take action if the school head is not immediately transferred from the school over alleged maladministration and heavy corporal punishment among other allegations.
One of the pupils Kundai Makado is said to be nursing wounds after severely beaten by one of the senior teachers at the school while the head Immaculate Tinago is alleged of flouting tender procedures, spending much of her time away from school and many other allegations which Santos Boko Haram, through anonymous letters, has threatened unspecified actions if she is not immediately transferred from the school.
Masvingo Provincial Education Director (PED) Zedias Chitiga confirmed the development and said he was awaiting report from the Zaka District Education Officer (DEO) so that they can deal with the problem.
“I have received reports that something terrible happened at Musiso and more events are unfolding currently. All we are waiting for at the moment are detailed reports of what is on the ground from DEO before we take immediate action. I have heard pupils have grievances and we will look into that,” Chitiga said.
Sources at the St Antonys’ High revealed that the group Santos Boko Haram was writing anonymous letters threatening teachers to be on the watch out as they are going to act soon if the problems at the school are not immediately addressed.
When contacted for comment, Tinago declined to comment saying she has since reported the matter to the DEO.
“The matter is being handled by DEO Mahofa so I cannot comment. Can you talk to the DEO I am sure he is in a position to comment,” said Tinago.
Chitiga, however, assured that they will attend the problem as soon as possible.news

Police yet to clear MDC-T demo

Upenyu Chaota

MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is yet to clear the Morgan Tsvangirai led Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) demonstration against worsening economic conditions in the country slated for Masvingo on August 3, 2016, though the party submitted the clearance application weeks ago.
MDC-T Masvingo provincial chairperson James Gumbi said they are yet to get response from the police and they have begun to suspect that the law enforcers were dragging feet on the matter.
“We do not know why the police is taking long to process our application. We applied to hold peaceful demonstrations and they urged us to make certain corrections on the application which we did immediately. Since then, we haven’t heard from them,” said Gumbi.
“We filed our application on July 15, 2016, but we are yet to get the response and the police is strangely quiet,” he added.
The police have been on high alert since the beginning of July after the country was hit by a wave of protests calling for President Mugabe and his administration to resign.
ZANU PF youth have since threatened to mercilessly deal with protesters describing Pastor Evan mawarire of the #This Flag Movement a nonentity being used by the west to push for regime change in the country.
Gumbi said they are not moved by ZANU PF threats and insisted that the utterances will not stop them from exercising their constitutional right.
“We are not worried at all by the threats made by ZANU PF’s misguided youth. They do not have the power to deal with anyone because they are not the law. Citizens have the right to exercise their right through peaceful demonstrations which is what we are doing,” Gumbi said.news

Maunganidze to speak at Obama Presidential summit

Own Correspondent

KANSAS, USA – Young leaders from 14 African countries persuing Civic Leadership studies at Kansas State University in America elected TellZim News director Golden Maunganidze to go and deliver a speech at U.S President Barack Obama’s presidential summit for the Mandela Washington fellows to be held in Washington DC from August 1 – 3, 2016.
The fellows said they have no doubt that Maunganidze will be able to represent both their countries as well as Kansas State University.
Maunganidze is expected to deliver an inspirational speech to about 1000 young African leaders, US State Department and Government officials and other representatives from world class organizations in Washington DC next week.
The ignite talk speech is supposed to be motivational and help young people throughout Africa to realize their potential in the development of their communities.
“After being with Maunganidze for about a month now, I have no doubt that he is our best choice – he has demonstrated leadership qualities and we expect him to go and inspire other young African leaders when we go to Washington DC,” said Samuel Gibba from The Gambia.
Another participant Stephen Ofori from Ghana said he was impressed by Maunganidze’s profile and the work he was doing back in Zimbabwe.
“To me, Maunganidze is a role model for the kind of youth that Africa is yearning for – he is a man whose integrity is intact. His work in Zimbabwe is amazing and we need to start energizing each other as we fight to bring positive change to our communities,” said Ofori.
For Benetta Davies from Liberia, Maunganidze has great potential to inspire African youth to think outside the box.
“I am personally inspired by what Maunganidze is doing and that has left me without any option beside the conviction that he will be able to represent us well. To me, he is a man of action who always preaches what he does,” said Davies.
A fellow from Cameroon, Theresa Morfaw Fonjia said she was eagerly waiting for the Presidential Summit in Washngton DC.
“I think this is going to be exciting to see one of us (Maunganidze) speaking on our behalf. He has proved to be a leader within the short space of time that I have known him and we are going to support him all the way. His personal life journey is an inspiration to many people,” said Fonjia.
Maunganidze, who is also a lecturer at Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), thanked fellow young African leaders for having confidence in him.
“This is my best moment…I had never spent six weeks living with leaders from various countries and it comes as an honour when such leaders who include lawyers, community builders, journalists, health workers and university lecturers come together and agree to elect you to be their representative at such a platform. I am humbled by the confidence which my fellows have in me and I am constantly reminded that I did not come to this programme by mistake,” said Maunganidze.
The 14 countries represented are Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, Namibia, Senegal, Cameroon, Liberia, Zambia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Ghana, The Gambia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe.news

MDC-T Nemachena dies

Memory Rasa

GUTU – Prominent Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T)member and candidate for the Gutu Central parliamentary seat in the previous general elections, Kenneth Nemachema has died.
Nemachena died at his home in Budiriro, Harare, in the early hours of Monday, July 18 2016.
The cause of his death was revealed as a high blood pressure-related illness which many suspect could have been aggravated by the death of his father in April this year.
Born in 1967, Nemachena is survived with his wife and five children.
He was laid to rest at his rural home in Dondo village under chief Nyamandi near Dewure business center on July 20, 2016.
Gutu MDC activist, Llyod Mupfudze said it was not only the party which had lost a dedicated member, but the country at large as it had lost a pillar and a father.
“Nemachena was one of MDC founding members. He was our district finance secretary and our losing candidate. He is a former councilor for Budiriro in the Harare city council. He also worked under Engineer Elias Mudzuri for some years,” said Mupfudze.
Besides being an active politician, Nemachena was also a successful businessman; being the owner and director of Digital Office Systems which provides ICT equipment to almost all high and primary schools in Gutu.
Currently, he was a member of SDC at Dewure High School and is a former chairperson of Dewure at SDC where he also did his secondary education.
“We have lost a dedicated part cadre that stayed in jail for more than a year at the instigation of ZANU PF. He was currently assisting many needy pupils with school fees at Dewure High and Primary schools,” added Mupfudze.
Nemachena was scheduled to accompany Dewure High School soccer team to Gwanda for COPA finals.
At the funeral were senator Misheck Marava, Muchirairwa Mugidho, Elias Mudzikiri, staff and children from Dewure High School.news

Masvingo war vets in sudden U-turn over Mugabe

MASVINGO – Masvingo war vets in sudden U-turn over Mugabe
Upenyu Chaota
MASVINGO – Masvingo War Vets, who have been on record condemning President Robert Mugabe for neglecting them and giving them paltry allowances and at one point described the First Lady as ‘Mainini’ (young lady), made a sudden U-turn and distanced themselves from the scathing communiqué issued last week saying they are rallying behind the nonagenarian.
Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association issued a statement last week indicating that they have dumped Mugabe and were rallying behind the embattled Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Masvingo Provincial War Veterans chairperson Tendeukai Chinooneka said they have no association with the origins of the communiqué and vowed that they will support Mugabe to the end.
“We are soldiers of the revolution and as soldiers we always take orders from our commander. Soldiers never disobey orders and if they do, they become rogue and will be dealt with accordingly. Lately, the war veterans have come under the spotlight after the communiqué but, as Masvingo, we distance ourselves from the statement.
“I don’t think that the communiqué originated from war veterans because we are principled; I was not at the meeting in Harare but I am sure that was the resolution of a few individuals and we want to disassociate ourselves from those individuals,” said Chinooneka.
Chinooneka further suggested that to demand Mugabe to leave office for Mnangagwa was day dreaming.
“We have said and will always say that Mnangagwa will take over after Mugabe but not before. So for those who say we are withdrawing our support from Mugabe I say to them go back to sleep and dream again.
“If you look at the communique you will find that it was something planned in time and was only associated with the Harare meeting but in reality there is no such thing. When we have our disgruntlements, we know how to air them to our patron and he listens to us,” said Chinooneka. The 500 war vets who met in Harare said Mugabe should retire and pave way for Mnangagwa whom they have always supported to take over from the nonagenarian.
They claim that Mugabe has lost control of Zanu PF and has given in to the demands of Generation 40 (G40), a faction which supports First Lady Grace Mugabe to take over.
War veterans also supported the recently expelled Christopher Mutsvangwa and declared that he still remains their national chairperson though he was fired from Zanu PF.news
