CHIVI – Chidyamakono High in Chivi last Friday held a colourful prize giving ceremony in celebration of the school’s academic and sporting achievements for the year 2017.
The event ran under the theme, ‘innovation, entrepreneurship and embracing the updated curriculum’.
Chivi District Administrator (DA), Chiedza Tafirei who was the guest of honour, said it is important to emphasise the importance of education in the development of the nation.
As a result, Tafirei said, government has implemented a new curriculum aimed at producing a self-sufficient, innovative and entrepreneurial learner.
She also thanked government for the Basic Education Assistance Module (Beam) funds, World Vision for the provision of classroom blocks and Makanaka Investments for donating furniture as well as availing transport for the Chidyamakono High girls’ soccer team.
Tafirirei encouraged school children to desist from early marriage and dedicate their time to education and sports.
“The current government policies are aimed at correcting historical and cultural gender imbalances therefore I challenge you all to shun early marriages and dedicate your time to education and sports,” Tafirei said.
Pote Holdings general manager Tamson Mtombeni said as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility, they decided to partner with the school as patrons in academics and sports.
Dr Antony Clever Pote, who is the patron of Chidyamakono High School girls’ soccer, gave the team a US$2 600 prize money.
The coaches were also rewarded with residential stands in Zvishavane courtesy of Pote Holdings.
School Head, Morrison Musorowegomo praised parents for supporting Chidyamakono, saying they were critical stakeholders in the school’s development.
In July this year, Chidyamakono High won the Copa Coca Cola trophy for a record fifth consecutive time.
The school’s under 17 boys also won the NASH Handball National trophy, making Chidyamakono High a notable sporting giant in the province and the country.
The achievements saw the school’s two under 15 girls’ football players and coach Yeukai Chiruvu being selected to participate in the Copa Global camp which took place last October in Durban, South Africa, where the team came second.education
