MASVINGO – First lady Auxillia Mnangagwa denounced theft and corruption in public hospitals, saying most government health institutions were losing out to dishonesty staff.
She said this on Wednesday during her visit to Masvingo Provincial Hospital as part of her campaign against cervical cancer.
People who came to see the first lady applauded her for the remarks, probably in light of the many reports of theft at the hospital.
“I had a tour in the hospital kitchen and I have noticed that inadequate of food is a challenge, things we see as minor are the most critical in a health facility like this. A slice of bread is important; I know that people like to take things to their homes using the economy as a justification. Theft is theft whether it involves a pair of gloves or a razor blade.
“We all know that the economy is bad and wages are low but stealing is not the solution. If you persevere and pray, one day things will be ok for you,” she said.
At the beginning of 2017, it was reported that a renal unit had been stripped of its vital parts at the hospital and in July of the same year, the hospital could not account for 11 gas cylinders.
Mnangagwa also urged everybody to go for cancer screening for the sake of early diagnosis and treatment.
“Cancer is real and it is killing people. It is unacceptable and embarrassing for us to be in the top ten countries with the highest cancer-related deaths. We all need to get screened early. It is not only women, even men need to be screened,” she said.
Officials from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, Population Service International (PSI), Medecins Sans Frontieres (MFS) and SolidarMed also attended the function.top news
