Gutu MDC Alliance leaders return to court

Two MDC-Alliance activists who were arrested on September 3 2021 at Zvavahera Business Centre in Gutu appeared at Masvingo magistrate court on January 19 for routine remand after which the matter was deferred to January 25 2022.
The two Langton Guvava who is the Secretary of Cadre ship, Development and Training for Masvingo and Gutu North Constituency chairperson Phillip Mahachi are being charged of failure to give notice of a gathering to a regulating authority as stipulated in the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA).
Speaking to TellZim News, Human Rights Lawyer Martin Mureri of Matutu and Mureri legal practitioners who is representing the two said the court has been adjourned to allow time for the other key witness to be called.
“We have appeared in court and the court date has been pushed forward as another key witness was not around will be called to court on January 25,” said Mureri.
On January 18 2022, three other MDC Alliance members Alec Tabe, Alaika Time and Vigisai Nerupindani appeared in court for a similar offence and were granted ZW $5 000 bail by Masvingo magistrate Patience Madondo.
They were arrested on January 17 2022 for failing to notify the authority that they were convening a meeting and violating Covid-19 regulations.
Commenting on the arrest MDC Alliance Masvingo provincial spokesperson, Dereck Charamba said the police were just being unprofessional and overzealous.
