ZAKA – Cornelius Mapuranga, who served as councillor in the Zaka Rural District Council (RDC) since 1980, has now been elected new chairperson to replace Sebastian Musundire.
The Zanu PF Ward 3 councillor, who is a retired school teacher, will be deputised by Ward 21 councillor, Judith Chipote.
In the July 30 harmonised elections, Zanu PF won 31 of the 34 wards in Zaka RDC, with the other three being won by MDC Alliance.
He said he will use his vast experience in council business to improve service delivery in such areas as water provision and roads in the district.
“Our people need access to clean water. Council will drill boreholes across the district and we will continue improving our road network,” said Mapuranga.
He also said he will work to improve teacher and nurse accommodation at council schools and clinics in the district.
On mining, Mapuranga said he will work to attract big mining companies to invest in Zaka and exploit the available mineral resources.
“We are inviting mining companies to come and explore our mineral resources and help employ our people and develop the district,” said Mapuranga
Zaka RDC has consistently accused Renco Mine of going beyond the underground boundaries of its lease area in Masvingo South to clandestinely extract Zaka gold.local
