Masvingo taxi driver killed in hit and run

A popular Masvingo taxi driver Simbarashe Mutonono (45) who plied Town – Rhodene route was knocked down by a truck while crossing the road in town and died upon admission at Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Kudakwashe Dhehwa confirmed the incident that happened on August 15 around 7pm and encouraged the drivers to drive attentively when approaching busy areas.
“I confirm the death of a pedestrian who was ran over by a truck carrying three passengers along Josiah Tongogara and Simon Mazorodze Street. We urge drivers to be attentive especially on busy areas,” said Dehwa.
Circumstances are that on August 15, Jonathan Hlaleneni (29) who resides in Target Kopje Masvingo was driving a truck with three passengers along Corner Josiah Tongogara Street when he hit a pedestrian who was crossing the road from OK Supermarket.
The pedestrian fell down on the road and sustained some head and chest injuries but the driver did not stop.
A follow up was made by the police and Hlaleneni was arrested along Charumbira Street.
The now deceased was rushed to hospital by a well-wisher and died upon arrival.
The car sustained a shattered windscreen and was taken to the Vehicle Inspectorate Department (V.I.D)
