Confusion mars CCC candidates selection

…no candidates names released one week before nomination court sits

Brighton Chiseva

MASVINGO –Confusion seems to be reigning supreme in the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) candidates selection process as they are yet to release the candidates list only a week before Nomination Court sits. Party deputy spokesperson Ostallos Siziba told TellZim in an interview that the candidate selection process will be over soon after which the party will announce its candidates.
Though he could not give a specific date, Siziba said party supporters should not worry as the party was on top of the situation trying to bring the best out of the process.
People have been accusing the party of delaying the process, a development that could be detrimental to the candidates who would have no enough time to campaign especially in rural areas where Zanu PF dominates the voter base.
“The process is almost done, we will announce the list of candidates soon, our members should not be worried at all,” said Siziba
In Masvingo Urban and Chiredzi Town, aspiring councilors are holding their breath as their fate is going to be sealed by the party supporters on Saturday (09 June 2023).
The elections will be held through the traditional Bereka Mwana method where party members will stand behind their preferred candidate and the presiding officers will manually count the people and the one with more people will become the winner.
Sources however said winning the vote will not automatically mean candidate wins the chance to represent the party as other nomination stages will be taken into consideration.
“Nominated candidates will have to go through another stage where people are going to be elected by party supporters. They will present their manifestos to the electorate before the election. After that they will then be ranked and the top three will go to the next which is probably the final stage,” said the source.
Party insiders however said a number of candidates were preparing to go it the Zanu PF way of bussing supporters from other wards or even rural areas to vote for them.
“A number of candidates are preparing to bus supporters from different wards and rural areas to beef up their numbers ahead of the watershed election which will be held a day after President Emerson Mnangagwa’s visit to Masvingo,” said the insider.
He said the move was a ploy to oust CCC sitting councilors who are said to have lost favor from party president Nelson Chamisa who seems to have the keys as to who will represent the party in the upcoming elections.
Chamisa openly said he is going to sign the nomination papers for the candidates to avoid double candidates as he no longer trust his lieutenants who in March 2022 signed for two candidates in ward 4 by elections.
On Sunday CCC all nominated aspiring candidates will bring their papers to the cluster center where they will be taken to the independent commission which will determine who among the three top candidates is most suitable, taking into consideration scores from the four vetting stages.
“All nominated aspiring candidates are to gather at the District Cluster centre on Sunday, 11 June at 10 am sharp.
“Each Nominee should bring particulars that are required by ZEC at the nomination court. Even where more than one persons are vying for the same position they must all bring their particulars on the day,” read part of the statement that came from the election bureau.
The statement also gave the age limits for each category with the minimum age for MPs and Councillors being 21 while for senators has been set at 40 years and above.

Price madness; calls for dollarisation mount

…As monthly basket price reaches ZWL $1 million

Beverly Bizeki

The economic hardships prevailing in the country have reached yet another level with the monthly basket jumping to ZWL $1 million this month burdening most workers who are earning the Zimbabwean dollar forcing them to call for dollarization and paying salaries in United States Dollars.
With prices of basic goods in local currency skyrocketing, the demand for foreign currency is on the peak as consumers are turning to informal traders to buy goods.
10 kg mealie meal is now costing an average of RTGS $22 000 while 1kg packet of sugar costs around RTGS $8 000. Cooking oil now cost RTGS $24 000 on average.
For street vendors who seem to have stolen the limelight, cash crunched citizens are asked to pay US$2, 50 per 2kg sugar while cooking oil costs US $3, 50 per 2litre.
The Consumer Council of Zimbabwe Director Rosemary Mpofu has revealed that the cost of living in Zimbabwe dollar terms rose by 62 percent between April and May resulting in increase of the monthly basket.
“The consumer council of Zimbabwe low urban income earner monthly basket for a family of six stands currently at ZWL $1 015 961.This is sharp increase because the basket has moved from the month of April where it was ZWL $611 275 up to ZWL $1 015 962.
“The low income earner is mainly earning in the Zimbabwean Dollar but the cost of living has really increased from the April figure to the May figure and it has constituted a percent increase of 62, 2 percent,” said Mpofu.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe President Dr Takavafira Zhou said there is need for government to restore sanity by not increasing the salary in RTGS but rather by paying workers’ salary in USD.
“Any attempt to increase the RTGS is merely fueling inflation as prices of basic commodities will sky rocket and erode the buying power. Extra ordinary challenges need extra ordinary solutions.
“As a stop gap measure, there is need to restore the purchasing power parity of workers’ salaries by paying a basic salary of US$540 and maintaining the current allowances. We, therefore, need a political, economic and social hygiene in Zimbabwe in order to give workers, particularly teachers, a breathing space,” said Dr Zhou.
Zhou also called for the stepping down of the Finance Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube saying he is the chief architect of the economic challenges Zimbabwe is facing.
“No wonder why Prof Mthuli Ncube must resign forthwith as the chief architect of the current economic challenges emanating from his so called austerity for prosperity, and US$1 = RTGS $1 that has turned out to be a diagnosis that tries to treat a patient by killing him/her,” said Zhou.
The Zimbabwean dollar this week fell from US $1: ZWL $2 577 to US$1: ZWL $3 673.

Hungry, angry Zanu PF supporters loot mealie-meal at Mnangagwa rally

Brighton Chiseva

MASVINGO – Angry Zanu PF supporters looted one truck of mealie meal after information came out that the mealie meal was not going to be distributed as had been promised during the rally at Mucheke stadium, Masvingo.
A number of trucks loaded with mealie meal were on standby at the rally that was addressed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa where he was said to be meeting first time voters.
Addressing party supporters at the rally, Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira said the President had brought mealie meal and everyone was going to get a share.
Things went south just after Mnangagwa and his entourage left when people started queuing for the mealie meal and all of a sudden the trucks started driving off, leaving people stranded with some claiming that the trucks were going to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) depot in Masvingo and will be distributed from there.
People then mobbed the last truck and started looting the mealie meal, with the driver watching helplessly after efforts to scare people away by moving the truck proved futile.
People were shouting that the president had said everyone should benefit but the local leadership was now diverting the mealie meal for their own benefit.
Party supporters mainly youths went on top of the truck and removed the tent covering the mealie meal and started throwing the 10kg packets into the cheering crowd.
A number of other supporters watched with envy as others looted the mealie meal.
Those who spoke to TellZim News said the local leadership were doing a disservice to Mnangagwa and the 5 million votes target by angering voters.
“These people are sabotaging the president. How will people vote for him when they are not getting what he promised them?” queried one supporter
Another one said the local leadership was going to lie to Mnangagwa that they had distributed when no one has benefited.
“The President had said everyone should benefit, now they have seen that he is gone they are now diverting the trucks to some location where they will distribute it among themselves and lie to the president that people have benefited. They are now saying the trucks are going to GMB, was the rally at GMB? This is just a ploy to divert the mealie meal,” said one supporter.
Some social media users who commented on the issue on TellZim News Twitter account said the trucks were just a campaigning gimmick and they were not meant to be distributed saying the same happened at Chambuta Children’s Home in Chiredzi recently where the First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa was guest.

No Polad for the losers this time

Ladies and gentlemen, Mapombi comes to you with a heavy heart. I recently met someone kuno kuChitima whose RTGS salary has been reduced to only US$10. The devastation on that man’s face as he loitered in the stalls only to buy katsapo kemachunks would have moved Panonetsa and Mthuli’s hearts if only they had any. The thing manje is they do not have iya inonzi compassion. I saw Mthuli promising the people of Cowdray Park a ‘smart city’ kkkkkk, baba imi pengerai kwamaroiwa mazvinzwa. Smart City munoiziva imi, and you are clearly aware that you are lying, that’s why you stammer every time you speak about it. Nothing this man presides over succeeds; Barbican bank makauraya, now Zim economy naTrabablas wenyu murikuponda. I am only waiting to see how these people will spin the economy story in their campaigns. The horse has bolted nhaiwe Mthuli, Panonetsa naShefu wenyu wenyambo uyo. There’s nothing left in the stable, and once again you have managed to take us back to being the world’s laughing stock nezicurrency renyu rekupenga iri. If you watch or listen to Mthuli speaking, you can clearly see that the guy has no confidence in whatever he will be saying. Such a terrible liar, bva vachigoda here kutaura chokwadi. MaProfessor emunowo futi, kkkk. Mabook acho zvaanenge anotopusisa. Jonso is busy singing for his supper down there in a Kenyan village. Let’s see if Zanu readmits him, but those who know ED know that he always treads with caution nevanhu ava. He won’t take Jonso lightly kkkk, hanzi Jonso is someone who would even come at your funeral just to disturb you on your last day kkk. If you think I am lying ask Tyson. How many who defected from opposition has ED welcomed, yet there are those dismissed from Zanu whose voices have gone hoarse from shouting praises for him but vachingovapo pazhe. They say, if you are dining with the devil you have to have a very long spoon, unokuvara. Iye Saviour, Tyson WaBantu auya zvine mutsindo. Trust me ladies and gentlemen, there is serious panic in the corridors of power. Kasukuwere is bad news for these people because I can bet that the pain and humiliation of Operation Restore Regacy is still fresh in the minds of the so many G40s we have in the ruling party, who have been forced by circumstances to go with the flow. Kasukuwere commands a big following, believe it or not. Don’t forget him and Mliswa were simbi dzebasa in yesteryear Zanu in Mashonaland. That guy had usurped so much power, that’s why you see murikuitwa midumbu muZanu at the mention of Saviour’s candidacy. Where are these two asi kkkk, if anyone sees them muti hanzi sei sei naMapombi. Anyway, back to Saviour, muZanu mapinda mhepo varume. They are quacking in their boots as we speak, and the only card they are left to play is to block him from filing his papers kuNomination Court either by arresting him or by finding any technicality that can work to their advantage. They know that Saviour is going to divide the Zanu vote, and that is a nightmare they never anticipated. Zvakangonakira isu vanaMapombi who know that Zanu neZanulite zvakafanana, ndedzemudanga. Not sure if Chamisa has a good strategy to counter the G40 effect, but haiwawo, Nero wacho is always busy saying ‘trinkets, trinkets’ kuTwitter uko, nothing more nothing less. He must have learnt the words recently because kungodai, ‘trinkets’ kkkk, bambo imika. On a serious note however, I don’t think taking this much time without revealing candidates is a good idea. People need to know their horses in time, because that instils confidence that indeed we are going somewhere. Remember you are working with protest vote here, and a large number of the people who will vote for you have no business following your internal party processes. All they want are the names, pachine time voitawo confidence kuti shuwa heino government in waiting. It begins to look like you are not yet ready to be in power. Iko muchitori ready here iyemi, because discord munoiwanzawo. Put your house in order, mazuva afamba. I hope leadership is not frustrating vana to an extent where they feel like hapana chekufira, vakutochembera pasina chabuda. Even all the vocal young activists are no longer as vibrant. …FC Wangu Mazodze punished in Marondera

TellZim Reporter

There was grief last weekend in the Masvingo football fraternity after both Masvingo city-based Zifa Eastern Region Division 1 teams Masvingo United Football Club (FC) and FC Wangu Mazodze were humiliated home and away.
The newly promoted Rusitu Tigers FC managed to collect maximum points at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo after they gained Masvingo United’s home ground during the first half.
In their 9th match in Division 1 league, the Chimanimani-based team won 3-1 against Una Una (Masvingo United) on June 4, 2023, after they managed to contain Masvingo United.
Rusitu Tigers President Innocent Mlilo said they were working hard with other stakeholders in Chimanimani and beyond to be among the top 4 when the season ends.
“This is our first season in the D1 soccer league so it’s a year of learning. We are targeting the top 4.
“We are grooming younger players in D2 soccer league around Chimanimani and Chipinge. We also have other teams in the social leagues around the same districts. Our aim is to mould our own players in the eastern side of the country.
One of the Rusitu Tigers directors Alfred Ndima applauded the community for supporting the team.
“We would like to appreciate those who are supporting the team, as you saw we had several supporters in the stadium we are thankful.
“Chimanimani was affected by cyclone Idai in 2019 so football is now a form of entertainment that is comforting us.
“We are anticipating to join the country’s top football league at the end of next season. The team has much potential,” said Ndima.
Masvingo United which is battling financially lost some of its senior players to its city rival Wangu Mazodze and other D1 teams in the province.
Masvingo United FC manager Fidelicy Nyahwai said they have lost several senior players and they are still building the team.
“In football you win and sometimes you lose, we have high hopes that the junior players are going to win in the next matches,” said Nyahwai.
Una Una city rival Wangu Mazodze also lost 1-0 against Surrey FC in Marondera.
Wangu Mazodze’s defeat did not go down well with the team’s top management which threatened to shuffle the team.
In a press statement, FC Wangu Mazodze Vice president Getrude Mazodze promised to make changes to the team.
“The team has been struggling with very small teams which in normal circumstances should be walkovers!
“In the next few days, I will be releasing a statement with regards to some changes which we believe will bring back happiness to the Zhalala Zhululu family,” reads part of the press statement circulated by the team’s spokesperson.
The team last registered victory at Mucheke stadium against Midway FC when the Zhalala Zhululu fans invaded the pitch attacking the visiting team’s goalkeeper.

Victoria High pupil commits suicide

Akudziwe Chenjerai from Yekuai, who was a form three pupil at Victoria High School in Masvingo is said to have committed suicide by drinking poison on June 6, 2023.
The School Head Engelbert Chimbwari confirmed the incident but said he was not yet sure of the circumstances.
“It is true that one of our learners is said to have taken her life by consuming poison yesterday, and I’m not sure why she did that,” Chimbwari.
Sources close to the matter however alleged that she took her life yesterday by drinking poison over a cheating boyfriend.
“She drank poison because her boyfriend, who is also a student at Victoria High school had chosen another girlfriend over her,” said the source.
Suicide among students has raised concerns about a mental health crisis that is destroying most children in Zimbabwe were most kids are taking their lives and suicide seems to be the second leading cause of death.
In 2017 a Form 2 pupil at the Catholic-run Silveira Mission High School in Bikita committed suicide by hanging in a storeroom after allegedly being bullied by senior boys.
Also in 2018 a 16-year-old boy from Rujeko C committed suicide after a misunderstanding with his sister over perfume by drinking a pesticide.
Last year in March another 16-year-old girl from Hillside Extension Masvingo who was doing form four at a local high school took her life by consuming a cotton pesticide after an altercation with her mother.

Chirumanzu South CCC members granted bail

Beverly Bizeki

The Chirumanzu South Citizens Coalitions for Change (CCC) members who were arrested last week for assault and malicious damage to property were granted bail by Gweru Magistrate Banda on June 7, 2023.
The six members who include Chirumanzu South CCC aspiring member of parliament Patrick Cheza, Tinashe Moyo (47), Elias Madhuviko (26) , Tanyaradzwa Calisto Marimbe(23) Christopher Mutoboni and Alex Gamuchirai (37) will each pay ZWL$50 000 bail.
The charges were that on May 31, 2023 at around 1100 hours the two accused persons arrived at Mazvimba Primary School gate where they saw the complainant Julius Kunodziya who resides at Gumbai Village Headman Manhovo Chief Chirumanzu and demanded to know what he was writing about.
The accused persons then proceeded and grabbed books from Kunodziya and tore one counter book into two pieces before leaving the scene.
In yet another incident, on the same day, Cheza proceeded to Govere Primary School where there was a Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) voter’s roll inspection point together with Moyo, Madhuviko, Marimbe and Gamuchirai where they had an altercation with Phillimon Madzivanyika from Kombayi Village.
It is reported that the accused persons approached Madzivanyika and asked what he was doing at the inspection station before grabbing him by the belt and smashing his Itel cellphone and throwing it to the ground breaking the back cover.
The value of the damaged cover is US $3.
In yet another incident, accused persons proceeded to Rupepwe Primary School where there was another voter inspection point where they assaulted Justice Dzaguma of Dzaguma Village Headman Govere in Chirumanzu.
It is reported that the accused persons arrived at the school in a black Mitsubishi Colt vehicle and asked the complainant what he was doing at the inspection station centre before assaulting the latter with open hands and booted feet all over the body.
At about 1630 hours the gang proceeded to another voter inspection centre, Shashe Primary school where they assaulted 64 year old Nhamo Muzembi.
It is alleged that the accused persons approached the complainant and grabbed Muzembi by the belt and struck him twice on the left leg with a knee while the other accused was holding bricks threatening to attack the complainant.
The accused persons then allegedly took a wallet containing US $50, an Econet sim card, POSB bank card and a ZANU PF membership card before going away making the total value of goods stolen US $60.
The accused persons further assaulted Abigail Madhabha on the same day at around 1650 hours at Mashamba Primary School at yet another voter inspection point.
The accused persons approached the complainant and asked her what she was doing at the inspection point before slapping her twice on the neck and instructing her to leave the premises.
The accused person sustained a swollen neck.

Additional Economic Stabilization Measures: Is the Treasury on the Right Path?

The Zimbabwe dollar (ZWL) is massively deteriorating against the US dollar particularly in the parallel markets since the beginning of 2023. The resultant galloping inflation which is now independently estimated above 700% has prompted policy response from authorities. The first set of economic measures to stabilize the economy was introduced in early May 2023. And on the 29th of May 2023, Treasury introduced another set of measures to stabilize the economy. This column, therefore, seeks to analyze the likely impacts of some of the key latest measures announced by the Treasury.

1. Promotion of Use of ZWL

In a bid to promote the use of the ZWL in the economy, the Treasury announced that all Government Agencies including Parastatals will now substantially collect their fees in local currency, payments to ZESA by non-exporters will be made in ZWLs, and all customs duty to be payable in ZWLs except for designated or luxury goods and circumstances where the importer opts to pay in foreign currency (forex).
The policy stance is highly commendable as it signals the government’s confidence in its own currency and helps shore up demand for ZWLs. As demand increases, the ZWL will regain and sustain its value against the US dollar (USD). This will help save the ZWL which at the moment is on the verge of total collapse and market rejection. In May 2023 alone, the local unit erased nearly 40% of its average parallel (alternative) market value as it slid from ZWL/USD 2200 in April to ZWL/USD 3600.
In year-to-date (YTD) terms, the ZWL has lost a staggering 75% of its value in alternative markets which is only two (2) percentage points lower than a 77% decline registered in the entire 2022. These numbers show that the ZWL is failing to perform its store of value function. As a result, economic agents are dumping ZWLs in the market as soon as they earn them. So, by increasing tax revenue collected in local currency, demand for ZWLs will be created as economic agents liquidate USD holdings to pay their dues to the taxman.
However, for durable ZWL stability to be realized, the policy must be fully implemented and be buttressed by other measures inter alia promotion of fiscal transparency across all tiers of government, sustainable (within limits) fiscal spending, tight monetary policy, efficient & effective public service delivery, and a flexible exchange rate regime which is key in attaining uniform market exchange rate.

2. Sterilization of Excess Liquidity

Treasury will continue to sterilize excess liquidity already injected into the economy through issuances of Treasury Bills (TBs) whilst the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) will continue to sterilize through appropriate monetary policy tools. Sterilization is an action taken by authorities to counter the effects on the money supply caused by their interventions in the foreign exchange markets.
This policy move is key as it seeks to address the root cause of ongoing ZWL instability and pricing madness – excessive ZWL liquidity growth in the market. For instance, the latest RBZ statistics show the ZWL component of broad money (M3) spiking unsustainably by 12.8% in March 2023 to ZWL1.32 trillion from ZWL1.17 trillion in February 2023. From a year-on-year (YoY) basis, this ZWL component of M3 grew by a staggering 324% from ZWL312.22 billion recorded in February 2022. These statistics provide evidence that there is excessive ZWL liquidity in circulation in the economy.
However, it remains to be seen if there will be adequate political will, especially in an election year to cut on burgeoning fiscal spending. Also, because of limited due diligence in public procurement processes & procedures, Treasury is making unjustifiably huge ZWL payments to government suppliers and contractors who in turn offload these balances in the parallel markets.
Fiscal spending is also rising as government supports winter wheat farming, attempts to cushion public servants, engages in unproductive election-linked expenditures, and anchors the 2023 Agric marketing year funding grain purchases from farmers by the Grain Marketing Board (GMB). If some of these expenditures are not cut, liquidity will remain high thus exerting pressure on the exchange rate to depreciate.

3. Monetary Policy Tightening

Treasury announced that RBZ will tighten monetary policy in order to reduce lending and hence money creation by banks. This policy may include hiking RBZ’s policy rate – a short-term reference rate at which commercial banks can borrow money from RBZ. Considering the status quo of increased liquidity in the market, hiking the Bank’s benchmark policy rate will help discourage speculative borrowing by banks as well as other demanders of loanable funds. For this policy to yield results, there is also a need for tight monetary targeting by RBZ to ensure that the rate at which the money supply is growing is in tandem with the rate of growth of economic activity in the real sector.
Also, Treasury announced that it will now fund the ZWL component of 25% foreign currency (forex) surrendered by exporters and will now collect all forex surrendered to service foreign currency loans assumed from RBZ. This policy move will help reduce quasi-fiscal operations (QFOs) by RBZ thus clamping money supply growth. Before, the RBZ was unsustainably printing ZWLs to purchase forex from tobacco farmers and exporters.
For instance, April 2023 merchandise exports stood at US$555 million and a quarter (US$138.8 million) of these exports were ceded to RBZ at the official rate (US$1: ZWL1047.44) as per the existing export surrender requirements. This means that roughly ZWL145.3 billion was printed and injected into the system in April 2023 through the purchase of USDs from exporters alone. With the value of exports expected to remain elevated throughout 2023, money printing to buy forex is unsustainable and fuel market instability.
However, it is going to be a daunting task for Treasury which is already facing a very limited fiscal space to raise ZWLs to buy forex surrendered by exporters. The funds were not budgeted for in the 2023 budget and there will be likely a low uptake of Treasury Bills (TBs) issued as they usually carry a coupon rate that is way below inflation. As such, there will be likely a high ZWL payments backlog leading to high exchange rate losses for exporters. Also, for a nation facing debt distress, the move by the Treasury risk collapsing public service delivery which is already being crowded out by burgeoning debt repayments. So, to eliminate this and other associated risks, the export surrender requirements must be discontinued.

4. Finetuning Exchange Rate

Treasury announced that weekly auctions will be limited to a maximum envelope of US$5 million and that all winning bids shall be paid within 24 hours of award. This, coupled with the pre-announcement of the available weekly auction envelope will help fast-track convergence of the interbank and auction exchange rates as it increases bidding competitiveness as well as subdue chances for insider trading.
While this may help improve the efficiency of the auction market, it remains my view that this system must be completely disbanded as it is breeding exchange rate multiplicity and rent-seeking behaviors. Also, the continued use of a priority list on the auction exerts moral hazard thus influencing how people put their bids.
More so, Treasury announced that all exporters’ forex proceeds that remain unutilized after 90 days will be liquidated onto the interbank market. Of this, authorities are trying to reduce the opportunity cost of idle forex balances. In theory, this will increase business investment, production, and productivity.
However, forced liquidation of forex proceeds will likely promote “pillow/mattress” banking and externalization of funds. As such, instead of forcing the liquidation of export forex proceeds after 90 days, authorities should disband the auction system and fully liberalize the interbank market. This is because to increase market efficiency including pricing of the ZWL, all market actors – public and private – must at least be subjected to the same market conditions.

5. Assumption of RBZ Debts

Treasury will assume all foreign currency debts from RBZ on 1 June 2023 and create a debt redemption fund to service other external liabilities in line with the arrears clearance program. These will be funded through new levies and other resource mobilization initiatives. Also, going forward all public foreign currency debt will be contracted solely by the Treasury. The move seeks to clear the RBZ balance sheet to allow the Bank to focus on its primary mandates of maintaining price, currency, and financial market stability.
While limiting state borrowing powers only to Treasury is a welcome development that will positively contribute toward debt sustainability, the bypassing of parliament in this process makes the debt assumption unconstitutional. This validates my opinion that the Zimbabwe Parliament only exists for ‘rubberstamping’ executive decisions which are against its oversight role of asserting the system of checks and balances of power and defending citizens’ interests. It is also standard practice to conduct comprehensive debt audits before debt assumptions to ascertain and eliminate the possibility of assuming odious and illegitimate debt.

6. Gold Traceability System

Through Fidelity Gold Refinery (FGR), the government will introduce a system to manage the traceability of gold from its origin, both from commercial and small-scale producers. This is key because gold production tracking & monitoring will minimize the chances of gold leakages and illicit trading.
Also, traceability measures help in curbing criminality as information such as the exact source of gold, holder of gold buying license, and amount of taxes paid on gold exports can be collected and analyzed. The prevailing rampant illicit flows must be reduced as they are militating against the accumulation of gold reserves which are crucial in supporting the value of both the ZWL and gold e-cards recently introduced by RBZ.

School suspended over Satanism

RENCO MINE – Lessons had to be suspended at Nyabata High School in Renco Mine yesterday (June 08) after a number of learners collapsed in what is suspected to be a satanism attack.

School authorities had to send all the learners home after the number of victims continued to rise which they felt they could fail to contain.

The school head Boniface Chuma could neither confirm nor deny the incident saying he was not at the school at the moment.

“I am not at the school at the moment, I am attending a meeting at another school so I cannot comment on the matter,” said Chuma.

Sources however said the incident started in form 3 South where one learner fell unconscious before others followed suit.

“One girl collapsed in form 3 South, she was taken outside and others began to collapse in the same class. A few minutes later, more were reported to have collapsed in the opposite class, form 3 West.

“A few moments later more learners collapsed in other classes until authorities decided to send all learners home as they could not cope with the increasing number of victims,” said the source.

Another source claimed that a bigger number of affected learners are from a Zion Christian Church sect and said the incident had allegedly been prophesied by a local self-proclaimed prophet.

“Most of the girls who collapsed are from ZCC Mbungo and they said they had been told about the incident earlier at church and were told that if it happened they had to sing and all satanists including teachers would reveal themselves but school authorities denied them permission to sing when the incident happened.
“Church elders were called and prayed for the victims before taking them to the local church,” said the source.

Another source said the incident started some few weeks ago with isolated cases until this week when the number increased to more than 10.

Some sources who allegedly spoke to the victims said it started when they were given oranges by one learner and they started feeling cold marking the spate of collapses that had been recorded over a few weeks.

Last year (2022) there were reports of satanism attacks at the Mining Compound with two children, one from Nyabata and two from Renco Mine Primarys School which are less than 500m apart being said to have been initiated by a teacher from Mashapa Primary School which is a kilometer from both schools.

The teacher happened to stay next door with the victims in Renco Mine compound with the matter having been taken to Chief Nyajena’s court but the accused was denying the allegations.

The victims would collapse, convulse and writhed in some incidences and narrated spine chilling accounts of how they do the practice.

MaRODO urges youth to participate in elections

… As Mnangagwa announces 2023 election date

Beverly Bizeki

Masvingo Root of Development Organisation Trust (MaRODO) has emphasized the need for youth participation in electoral processes as voter registration for the 2023 election has ended.
With August 23, 2023 having been proclaimed as the date for the election, MaRODO in a statement released on June 1, 2023 said young people should be actively involved in politics to ensure that their voices are heard in a bid to have a significant impact in shaping the future of the nation.
“First and foremost, we want to emphasize the importance of youth participation in electoral processes. The youth make up a significant and large portion of the population in Zimbabwe, and as such, our voices must be heard in decision-making processes that affect our future.
“Therefore, it is essential for all fellow young people of voting age to engage in electoral processes by registering to vote and turning out to vote on 23 August, Election Day, this year,” read part of the statement.
MaRODO further urged the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to have pro youth policies to enhance youth participation in elections as candidates.
“In the same vein, it would be beneficial for Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC), as the governing body of elections, to develop or consider implementing pro-youth policies proposed by other organizations aimed at creating a more conducive political environment for young people.
“Such policies should be designed to address the issue of low youth representation within political parties, with measures put in place to encourage passionate and dedicated young individuals to actively participate in political processes.
“Some of the measures can be provision of robust leadership trainings and civic education, since most young people especially in the rural areas, lack knowledge about the importance of participation in governance processes in the country and how it affects the economy and the well-being of the country,” reads the statement.
The organisation has further advocated for the youth and political parties to uphold the values of peace and national unity as we are already in the election period.
“Elections can cause tension and division in the country, which can lead to violence and unrest. Our country, Zimbabwe has a history of election violence, which has resulted in loss of life, destruction of property, and ultimately an erosion of the democracy that Zimbabweans fought for.
“Consequently, as young people, we must play a vital role in promoting peace and unity during the pre-election, election, and post-election period. We urge all political party leaders and supporters to uphold the values of peace and unity, as it is in the best interest of our country,” reads the statement.
Recently a number of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) urged ZEC to reduce the candidate nomination fees and pleaded for youth, gender disability sensitive fees to advance inclusive representation in public offices.
