Bata donates to ZIMCARE Mudavanhu school

Gweru –Bata Shoe Company last week donated an assortment of garden equipment and groceries to Mudavanhu Zimcare School in Gweru.
The donations were done as Bata was celebrating its 128th year anniversary.
The equipment included 10 garden racks, 10 shovels, 10 hoes, 10 garden forks, 2 wheelbarrows, 20 brooms, ten slashers and 10 mops.
Currently Mudavanhu school has an enrolment of 17 students which includes 13 boys and four girls.
Speaking on the sidelines of the donation, Bata Managing Director Simon Mutsiya said Bata was still thriving in providing quality services and employment to the nation.
“Bata started in 1894 in Czech Republic and we’re currently operating in over 70 countries globally with over 5 500 employees. In Africa we’re in 7 countries including Zimbabwe which has the biggest plant in Southern Africa.
“Bata is here to stay and we’re modernizing the factory by acquiring new technologies wherever possible to improve the competitive age and to export in both Southern Africa Development Committee (SADC) region and other countries.
“We have plans of having two additional stores every year for the next five years and that we’re going to acquire shops and also partnering with some of the key supermarkets to form synergies,” he said.
He added that the company’s intentions to come up with new designs as an innovation strategy remained relevant in the ever-changing and highly competitive market.
“There are intentions of new designs and our innovation range should be in the range of 15-20 percentage that is out of 100 styles 15 styles should be nil so that we become competitive in the market. For now, we’re hovering on 7-8 styles and we still need to scale up.
“We are stepping in the right direction because we’re starting to see prices stabilizing both input cost and the prices that we’re passing to our consumers.
“I also plead with City council to act on illegal vendors who have been given a long rope highlighting that they are bringing unfair competition to the market,” he added.
Mudavanhu Zimcare School head Susan Ncube said the donation was going to go a long way in helping children with survival skills.
“We are a skills training school and not an academic one and through that we are more focusing on teaching our kids life survival skills so that they can be functional and self-reliant when they go back to the community.
“Life surviving skills is our syllabus and I am thankful for the gesture shown by Bata Shoe Company. Teaching mentally challenged pupils is very hard but I’m glad we’re doing the right thing in developing these kids.
“We have received comments from the community where some of our students are prospering in projects such as poultry and gardening which is earning them some money to survive,” she said.
Bata also pledged to sustain the donation of food stuff similar to the packages handed over during the anniversary ceremony for every month up to the end of year.

Masvingo City Council has resolved to increase measures to enforce bill payment following a huge closing balance for debtors in August 2022.
Minutes from the Finance and General Purposes Committee meeting held on September 23, revealed that the total debt owed to council as at August 31 2022 was ZW$ 1 306 857 851.43.
Council has resolved to invoke public health by-baws in the event of non-payment or failure to stick to payment plans.
“It was reported that at some educational institutions, water had been disconnected and enforcement of public health by laws would be invoked in the event of non-payment or failure to adhere to payment plans.
“The Committee further noted the need to increase the numbers of assistant debt collectors to ensure timeous meter reading and enforcement of water disconnections,” read the minutes.
In July, council disconnected 1129 properties in the city from water supply over outstanding debts which the property owners are seemingly reluctant to honour.
Last year council management at one point tasked Town Clerk Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa and Mayor Collen Maboke to approach the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira to help them recoup outstanding debts from government institutions and departments.
Failure to pay bills has been cited as one major causes behind poor service delivery as the local authority struggles to fund their projects.
Residents and institutions continue to owe them huge sums of money that would be easily eroded by inflation and become valueless due to the instability local currency has been subjected to.

Mberengwa lodger up for killing fellow tenant over rentals

Mberengwa– A 37-year-old man Edison Zhou on September 30, 2022 appeared in court facing murder charges.

The accused appeared before Mberengwa Magistrate Charity Katonongera for allegedly murdering a fellow tenant at a house the two were lodging.

Zhou was remanded in custody to October 13, 2022 and advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

Elizabeth Mudisi represented the State.

Circumstances given are that the now deceased Luckson Gumbo died after being attacked with a sharp object at Mbare Market in Northwood, Mberengwa on September 27, 2022 at around 10 pm.

Zhou and Gumbo were tenants residing at the same house and the deceased was assigned by the landlord to collect rentals by the property owner.

He then engaged and asked Zhou for rentals upon which an argument started resulting in a fist fight.

Gumbo then overpowered Zhou and withdrew a sharp object and stabbed the latter twice and fled the scene.

The now deceased was ferried to Mberengwa District Hospital by passers-by who found him lying helplessly.

He died the following day and a police report was made leading to Zhou’s arrest.

Masvingo Urban councillors have expressed concern over little progress on the legacy Mucheke Trunk Sewer project saying the resolutions city fathers have passed concerning the project are now more than developments on the ground.
Speaking during a full council meeting held on September 26, 2022 at the Civic Centre, Ward 5 Councillor Daniel Mberikunashe said it is disheartening to compare the number of resolutions that council has passed towards the project with the actual work done on the ground.
“Looking at works on the trunk sewer project, one can actually see that the recommendations passed towards the project have been repeated and every time the matter is brought before the committee, similar issues keep on recurring. Taking a look on the ground, one would realize that nothing meaningful is obtaining,” said Mberikunashe.
His sentiments were echoed by ward 7 councillor Richard Musekiwa who asked council management to provide feedback on the resolution earlier on passed that tasked the finance department to approach the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development concerning disbursement of delayed devolution funds.
“Last time when this issue was brought to our attention, we discussed something to do with funding of the project and we agreed to send a delegation led by the finance director (Dannister Jori) to go to Harare. I am not even aware of the position we are at, but we can all see it goes back to issue of funds.
“The other challenge is that despite the late disbursement of the allocated funds, the project would also be affected by the rainy season. Also when council intends to construct bridges, the pipes would have to be shifted again and that means the 78 percent progress we are talking about would be reversed a bit,” said Musekiwa.
Responding to the issue, Town Clerk Engineer Edward Mukaratirwa said management had already made the necessary applications needed and are just awaiting the release of the funds from the Treasury into their coffers.
“Like we said during the last full council meeting (August), we have already submitted all the relevant paper work to the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works but now we are waiting for the ministry of finance to respond. Officials at the ministry of finance acknowledged receiving our documents and are now waiting for their response,” said Eng. Mukaratirwa.
The trunk sewer project whose works have spanned over more than a decade is yet to be completed with financial challenges hindering progress.

Women participation in decision making: Crucial in attaining gender equality

Shurugwi-The involvement of women in decision making processes is crucial in addressing most service delivery challenges affecting communities as revealed in a study conducted by local development experts.
This was highlighted by the Zimbabwe Women Resource Centre Network (ZWRCN) and Gweru Residents and Ratepayers Association (GRRA) during a collaborative engagement with Shurugwi community and ZWRCN Gender champions on September 29.
Speaking during the programme which focused on equipping women with leadership skills, ZWRCN’s Gender Economic Policies and Public Finance Officer Marilyn Mucherera said as an organisation they were there to amplify the voices of women in communities.
“As an organisation we greatly stand and believe in advocating for women’s rights and making a difference on the life of the girl child. So, through the cycle of this project we were working in collaboration with our partner GRRA to amplify the voice of women in decision making processes.”
“One of the platforms which we wish the voice of mothers to be heard are community meetings, budget and electoral processes so that they can assume leadership roles. We have been persuading women to assume leadership roles by highlighting the importance of being involved.
“We believe participation is key as it is crucial in achieving gender equality and brings community development. Bridging the link between participation and service delivery, you can see women are at the centre as they understand service delivery issues better,” said Mucherera.
GRRA director Conerlia Selipiwe said it is important for a community to consider leadership qualities when selecting a leader.
“As we have already said, we are here to persuade you the gender champions and the community to assume leadership positions as this is key in achieving gender equality in our society.
“We need leaders who know what their mandate is, that is to serve people who sent them to office. You are in charge of monitoring these councillors as you have the power to elect them.
“Don’t be afraid to come up with your own checklist of developmental priorities when you send your councillor or Member of Parliament to duty. If s/he comes back with feedback, check whether you are on the same page with him/her.
“Why only wait for men to lead, be leaders as women because you are better leaders. You understand areas which affect you, your homes, communities, constituencies even better than anyone else,” he said.
He further said it was a commendable move to know that Shurugwi as a community has women in leadership posts.
“It is good to note that at least in Shurugwi you have three women but more needs to be done. Be influential in decision making as your contributions shape the community we want.
“On the issue of budgeting processes, we see gaps are there and the need to bridge them is vital. People must understand how budgeting processes go; we want women to know how a gender sensitive budget can be crafted.
“It is important to equip women with knowledge about budgeting, budget processes and how they can contribute actively. We understand once a budget is formulated and written in English, it becomes a challenge to others. Why not break it in a simple language for all people to understand? So we need to put our local authorities to task as they work with communities so that no one is left behind,” he added.
A ward 11 Gender Champion said it is pathetic to note that councillors are now deserting residents.
“Let me say it, we have a new breed of councillors nowadays. After you vote for them, they relocate from their wards to low density suburbs. They are not aware of developments happening in their wards. They are now bosses.
“It’s pathetic to note these are now our community leaders. Next year is coming, we will revisit the books, we don’t have any way to lay our complaints, we voted them into office in 2018 and never saw them again,” she said.
Ward 13 councillor Priscilla Mushonga expressed gratitude to the two organizations for visiting the community.
“I am happy our residents association has come to engage us, at last I am sure people now understand that to improve service delivery, we need unity of purpose.
“I hope as a ward going forward, we will see change and actively participate,” said Mushonga.
It has been noted that about 70% of women in sub-Saharan region are greatly affected by poor service delivery since they spend most of their time at home.

SIRP urges farmers to use block of irrigation system

Small Irrigation Revitalization Programme (SIRP) has urged irrigation farmers to use block system as it helps in conserving water leading to higher yields as there will be enough water all year round.
Speaking at Banga Irrigation Scheme field day, SIRP national project coordinator Odrek Mukokera said the block system that their organization introduced proved to be effective as evidenced by high quality and quantity of yields produced at the irrigation scheme.
Mukokera also added that their aim as SIRP was to reduce vulnerability of smallholder farmers to food and nutrition insecurity, climate change and economic shocks.
“I am happy with the good work which we have witnessed here. The block system we introduced proved to be effective as indicated by the quality and quantity of wheat and maize we have seen today. Our main aim as an organization is to reduce vulnerability of smallholder farmers to negative effects of climate change and thus national food insecurity,” said Mukokera.
Banga irrigation scheme under the help of SIRP introduced the block system of irrigation because it saves water after realizing that using canals for their irrigation was causing loss of water hence decided to introduce the system.
Chairperson for Banga irrigation scheme Munogweyi Mateza thanked the government and SIRP for their support.
Mateza said government helped them with seeds and input and SIRP helped them with farming skills and other technical services.
“I want to thank government for the seed and inputs they gave us. I also want to thank SIRP for helping us with seeds, main pump, building six double toilets , donated 4.7 km fence, teach farmers how to produce sanitizers, youth were trained in bee keeping, farmers given 84 chicken each one getting five.
“Farmers were also taught how to manage farming projects and post harvesting management among others,” said Mateza.
Despite the good results that block system is producing at Banga irrigation scheme, Mateza said that they are still having shortage of infield get valves and hydrants.
Mateza said that about seven hydrants are needed for the capacitation.
“Although the government and SIRP are helping us, we still have some challenges like shortage of infield get valves and hydrants .We need about seven hydrants in our irrigation scheme,” he added.
Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira who was the guest of honour at the event said he was impressed with the results that block system had produced at Banga irrigation scheme.
“Today we have a ripe winter wheat ready for harvesting at this scheme that was rehabilitated by the government of Zimbabwe and SIRP. This scheme was using canals which were replaced by hydrants and horse for efficient and effective use of water. This has also helped reduce water losses as canals were difficult to maintain as leakages were rampant,” said Chadzamira.
He also challenged farmers should utilize land effectively and those who are not able to utilize it, should give pave way for those who can.
“Gone are the days of having plots laying fallow or beneficiaries of plots renting out their plots .Those not capable of utilizing their plots should pave way for productive farmers and concentrate on dry land production. Irrigation schemes belong to the government of Zimbabwe and as such productive farmers should benefits and utilize these irrigation schemes,” he added.
Chief Madzivire thanked government and SIRP for their support as this has uplifted the livelihoods of Chivi people.
“I want to thank government and SIRP for their support .This irrigation scheme has uplifted the livelihoods of people of Madzivire as some are now able to send their children to school,” said Chief Madzivire.
Members of Banga irrigation scheme received three wheelbarrows, a shovel and five sprayers from SIRP.

CHIREDZI-Coalition Against Child Labour in Zimbabwe (CACLAZ) recently welcomed its school returnees into the school environment at a fanfare party held at Uswaushava Primary School.
The move was warmly welcomed by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education as well as surrounding communities as almost every child, from its three incubation centres, is benefitting from its feeding scheme which has improved children’s nutrition.
Last week, CACLAZ, which has a thrust in responding to the growing problems of child labour in the country through raising awareness and helping those in need, welcomed its school returnees, who had dropped out of school, in style at Uswaushava Primary School, through competing in poetry and drama, raising awareness of their motto, ‘Parents to work and children to school’ before holding a fanfare party for them.
CACLAZ’s Projects Officer Esnath Ngandini said the fanfare party, poetry and drama competition was only meant to welcome the school returnees into the school environment and not to determine who was best than the other.
“This competition and the party we are having today are not to determine who is the best among others but an event to welcome of returnees to the school environment,” said Ngandini.
Chiredzi District Schools Inspector (DSI) Petronella Nyangwe said the initiative is a noble one which has managed to benefit most children who had dropped from school as it is one of the most effective in terms of access to education.
“The programme is an excellent initiative. A lot of children have been able to return to school and have received support to stay in school at the three participating schools. It’s one of the most effective programmes in terms of access to education in our district,” said Nyangwe.
Panganai Gwadamirai from Mac-Kushinga said the project is a game changer for most children whose hope to get education had been lost as they have managed to cater for most children who had dropped from school with school fees, stationery and food to motivate them to continue learning.
“The returnees have benefitted a lot. They are now enjoying school together with other children as they managed to get stationery and a goat project which will generate the learners’ school fees. They have also offered a feeding scheme which is benefitting every pupil at the three schools in the programme,” said Gwadamirai.
CACLAZ is making strides towards the reduction of child induced labour in estates and new resettlements, where they have established incubation centres at Uswaushava Primary School, where they also helped with the construction of school blocks, Mac-Kushinga and Chipiwa Primary schools, where they managed to rejuvenate the long lost educational hope for more than 600 pupils.
Mac-kushinga, Uswaushava and Chipiwa Primary Schools are benefitting from the feeding scheme involving the Corn Soya Blend (CSB) porridge with vitamins, proteins and minerals which pupils get every morning and overnight maheu in the afternoon.

ZAKA–Chief Nhema born Rangarirai Bwawanda of Zaka who recently made headlines after promising Zanu PF more than five million votes in 2023 has given Zaka East MP who is the ruling party District Coordinating Committee (DCC) chairperson and Deputy Minister of Finance and Economic Development Clemence Chiduwa an order not to cross Chiredzi River into wards that fall under the former’s area of jurisdiction.
Chiduwa is not allowed to be in wards 20, 21, 26 and 31 that fall under his constituency and also under Chief Nhema’s area after the two allegedly clashed over Zanu PF’s Central Committee nominees in Zaka with Chiduwa alleged to be supporting Nyasha Gavaza whilst Nhema is in support of Davis Marapira who recently transferred from Masvingo to Zaka district.
Marapira is the sitting MP for Masvingo North but is said to be eyeing Zaka Central and is also the Deputy Minister of Agriculture.
Sources who spoke to TellZim News claim that the Chief has since ordered all party chairpersons in these wards not to attend any meeting organized by Chiduwa or else they will face serious consequences.
However, when contacted for comment, Chief Nhema refuted the allegations saying it’s actually Chiduwa who was instructing the party chairpersons not to go to him.
“If anyone is saying I have banned Chiduwa from my area, he or she is lying. I have never instructed anyone from my area not to attend his programmes, it’s actually him who instructed the chairpersons from visiting me their Chief,” said Nhema.
Quizzed on why Chiduwa was banning chairpersons from visiting him, Nhema said Chiduwa was the best person to answer that saying he was not aware of the reason.
He went on to say he doesn’t fear Chiduwa and if there is anything that needs clarification, he would just face him as he has been doing all along and as it stands there is nothing much that warrants him to ban him in his area.
“I don’t fear him and if there is anything I simply tell him man to man, he is my MP and I am a Chief with an area within his constituency so we have to work together for development. I have not reached a point of banning him in my area like I did to Chakona (former Zaka Central MP Paradzai Chakona) at some point and if need be I can simply tell him that. I have talked to his constituency coordinator over the matter,” added Nhema.
On his part Chiduwa said it was not a ban but they had some issues which they deliberated and ironed out saying he was working well with Marapira who is being fronted by the Chief as government officials.
“We had some disagreements over some issues but I think they have been resolved. I cannot say I was banned by Chief Nhema because if he does that, it would affect development,” said Chiduwa.
However, sources who spoke to TellZim News said the issue emanated from Marapira’s transfer to Zaka and being seconded into the Central Committee (CC) aspiring candidates and him being Nhema’s favorite candidate for both CC and MP for Zaka Central come 2023.
“When Marapira’s transfer letter was presented to the DCC, it appeared as if his issue had been deliberated by Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) but Ophias Murambiwa (Maga–Maga) of Zaka West and Pepukai Chiwewe who is Chiduwa’s right hand man questioned where it was deliberated since they sit in both PEC and Zaka DCC.
“Chiduwa was then tasked to enquire by the DCC and it was established that his transfer was not done procedurally but the issue was just dropped and Marapira was welcomed in Zaka,” said the source.
The source went on to say the matter only got sour when Marapira indicated that he wanted to contest in the Central Committee and Nhema pushed party chairpersons in Zaka East to drop the constituency nominee Nyasha Gavaza and vote for Marapira.
“The four MPs of Zaka had each seconded a person for the post with Zaka West’s Maga Maga having thrown his hat in the ring. So Gavaza was nominated for Zaka East since he is the only interested candidate who qualifies. However, Nhema started to influence chairpersons in Zaka East to vote for Marapira ahead of Gavaza.
“He even told Chiduwa that the chairpersons were against Gavaza’s candidature but Chiduwa told him to let them contest and indicated that Marapira could win or lose and that’s when Chief Nhema told Chiduwa that he never wants to see him crossing Chiredzi River which boarders Nhema and Bota areas in Zaka East,” said the source.
Chief Nhema is a staunch supporter of ZANU PF who openly supports the party and each election he has his own favourite candidate.
In the run up to 2018, Nhema was rallying behind James Makiya and he often had clashes with Chakona whom he openly banned from his area.
Both Makiya and Chakona went on to lose in the primary elections to Davison Svuure who is the current MP and has found another candidate in form of Marapira who hails from his area.

Marange villagers are bemoaning the infestation of corruption, perpetration of intimidation, illicit sexual advances and gross prevalence of bribery by state security agents who man the area against the unlawful handling and leakages of diamonds.
Marange natives went out guns blazing on September 24 as they lamented the disappearance of peace, economic freedom and movement allegedly at the hands of State Security officers that have become vanguards of awful harassment, bribery, corruption and unlawful battery.
Cases of assault and intimidation spanning from the end of August to mid-September this year at Tonhorai village of Marange and Mudzeengwa village have been confirmed.
Speaking at a recently held engagement hosted by Centre for Research Development (CRD) a resident and former councillor in Marange Daniel Nyazika claimed the locals were suffering at the hands of soldiers and other authorised officers that have gone to use illegal miners as objects for use in the orchestration of mineral leakage in the process violating the constitutional right to dignity.
“We are human beings and we do not only survive on diamonds but also rely on farming crops and livestock rearing but all these things are going down the drain because of diamond mining taking place in Marange. At the end of the day we are suffering at the expense of soldiers and the enacted PPAA law. As Chiadzwa dwellers, have no business whatsoever because mining has become the enemy of our progress. The belief that diamond is benefiting Zimbabwe is absent among us Marange people,” lashed Nyazika.
Another resident (who anonymously spoke) lamented the continued harassment alleging Chiadzwa is now a ‘haven of intimidation and momentous bribes’ a situation that has reached unprecedented levels.
He added that high prevalence of foreign illegal miners known in mining circles as Magweja has placed Marange natives under ‘the guillotine’.
“A lot of people are coming from outside our area to mine and they end up wreaking havoc in our society. They pass through seven road blocks freely but us Marange dwellers, are becoming aliens to our own land. We appeal to you leaders to use local police force from Bambazonke because they are familiar with our struggles as we are being harassed and intimidated by the same State Security that is supposed to protect us. A lot of unknown personnel pass through the official entrance and it’s uncertain if our community has any hope.
“We are violated by outsiders who tell us, Chiadzwa dwellers not to pass through tagged points. We have cases of Chiadzwa villagers being told to pay fines and bribes amounting to US$ 20 at Nyanyadzi just to get a pass. We are arrested without committing a crime and there is not even a clear verification of arrests. They (state security) do not even verify identities, they just arrest with the aim of collecting money from us at the end of the day, we have to bear the brunt of selling property, livestock and clothes so that we bribe the security agents whenever we want to move from one point to another. Limitations are affecting us. We are now unable to move freely. Gone are the days when we unveiled documentation, now it’s no longer applicable,” he said.
An investigation on the issue of community insecurities has revealed that communities in protected areas is harbouring illegal miners from outside and sending vulnerable groups like women and children to pan for diamonds on restricted areas.
An investigation carried out by CRD presented in their latest report indicate that 13 blocks and checkpoints have become permeable, a reality that has laid the base for corruption, sexual manipulation and intimidation prevalence.
Other reports indicate that properties meant to be guarded by state security are either being vandalised or stolen from while they are in communities thwarting natives.
Zimbabwe Diamonds and Allied Workers Union (ZIDAWU) member Cosmas Sunguro confirmed the challenges taking place at Chiadzwa.
“PPAA should benefit both Chiadzwa dwellers and law enforcers because at the moment economic freedoms are being violated. Guarantee of free movement is now thing of the past but remember there are families that need to survive but it’s difficult when a basic human right of movement is being curtailed,” said Sunguro.
Onayi Marange a denizen from the mining community said how life has become expensive through the high levels of bribes that have exercabated since the initial diamond rush in 2007.
“It’s now expensive to live and survive in Chiadzwa. Once you meet state security, they try to find ways to make you pay or bribe them. Identity documents like National ID’s or passes from Chiefs are no longer serving their purpose but they are being by passed. Corruption has infested itself in state security and it’s now troubling our freedom as Zimbabwean citizens. Unlawful charges range from US$ 1, US$ 2 to as high as US$ 20,” said Marange.
Raids by authorised officers at business centres like Tenda, Mashugashuga, Makotamo and Muchena have affected native business operators.
CRD leader James Mupfumi underscored the harsh situation emanating from Marange due to abused governance of PPAA noting that the abuse of power by state security is attracting negative attention on the global arena.
“What is happening in Marange is something that is placing Zimbabwe on the spotlight in a bad manner. They should work in recognition of peoples’ challenges rather viewing natives as subjects.
