Time running out for Loga

0

Zdravko Logarusic

Clayton Shereni

The appointment of Zdravko Logarusic as the man in charge of
the Warriors was received with mixed feelings, with some saying his ‘vast’
experience in the game will help improve the team’s performance while other
referred to him as a failed clown.

The Warriors fan base was surely divided, some thought his
marriage with Zimbabwe Football Association (Zifa) would end the Valinhos way,
while the optimistic fans thought he would assemble a formidable side that
would match the Reinhard Fabisch’s ‘Dream Team’.

Some of the notable critics of his appointment were Warriors
and Liverpool legend, Bruce Grobbelaar who slammed Zifa for appointing a novice
of Zim’s football landscape.

Local coaches have had their chance and some have achieved
to a certain extent, with the likes of

Sunday Chidzambwa and Calisto Pasuwa leaving a mark and
writing their own pieces of history.

Loga’s charges at the CHAN 2021 tourney were booted out with
a game to spare, with many attributing the poor performance to lack of fitness
on the local players.

It is a public secret that currently Zimbabwe has one of its
finest football generations and any coach would struggle to pick from the cream
de la cream.

However, having dozens of quality players should not be an
excuse for failure to scout for the best but surely a blessing.

During his unveiling as the Warriors head coach in February
2020, Loga promised to shame his critics by turning around the team’s
performance for the better.

He however pleaded for but for patience from local
stakeholders.

“I am not Messiah I don’t know everything. I have something
but I have to take the best from you and we can put it together to create
something, that is what is important for me,” said Loga during the presser.

The Croat has surely proved not to be a Messiah if statistics
from all his outings are something to go by.

He needed more time to assess players who have been inactive
for a long time due to the lockdown, and pressure is building up against him.

He collected a paltry two points from the six games he has
handled; one against Malawi another one against Algeria in an Afcon qualifier
return leg at the National Sports Stadium.

Against Algeria, the Warriors grabbed a late equalizer
courtesy of Prince Dube whom Loga had said to be a fantastic and inform striker
but could not choose him ahead of those playing in much competitive leagues.

The Croat seemed to be a nonsense gaffer after changing over
half of his provisional CHAN squad during the training camp.

Loga initially called up Dynamos goalie Simbarashe Chinani,
dropped him from the squad, called in Taimon Mvula to ‘assess’ him, dropped
Mvula and called Chinani back into the squad.

Chinani went on to have a horror night in Cameroon on
January 20 after being given the nod ahead of Highlanders veteran goal minder,
Ariel Sibanda who also had his fair chance in a one nil loss against the hosts.

The clown tag once again hanged on Loga’s head after the
defeat as he alleged the hosts had used ‘juju’ to win the match after he found
a bat in the field of play. Loga posed for a photo next to the bat with a piece
of paper written “Witchcraft in Cameroon”.

However, Zifa has many questions to answer as to why they
keep on encountering the same problems over and over again.

Training camps have always been affected by poor planning
while some players have allegedly faked injuries to avoid doing duty for
‘peanuts’.

The association was pressured to charter a plane for the
Malawi friendly match last year after it had planned to send the team by bus
for the assignment.

The initially planned road trip sparked an outrage, with the
Footballers Union of Zimbabwe (FUZ) condemning the plan and calling on the
authorities to cancel the trip over concerns of players’ safety.

Zifa is reportedly paying the gaffer US$7000 a month amongst
other benefits a contract which has been criticized to be strain on the
association which is known for its very bad financial books.

Zimbabwe has an arsenal full of quality players both local
and foreign-based, and most of them are at the peak of their careers but they have
failed to be consistent when it comes to national duty.

Inconsistencies on recruitment of players and hiring and
firing of coaches is another factor which seems to be affecting the consistency
of players as they are being introduced to different philosophies in a short
space of time.

Thorough research on the success and qualities of a coach
before his appointment are key factors, so to avoid a scenario where coaches
are hired and fired in a short space of time for not producing the desired
results.

If the current results being produced by the team under Loga
mean anything, then the combination between the Croat and Zifa is a cause for
concern.

Alderman Doug Hill dies

Doug Hill

Agnes Madechihwe

Renowned Masvingo businessman and property owner Alderman
Dough Hill has died, TellZim News can report.

He died last night after fighting what was reported to be an
old-age related illness.

Family spokesperson Alicca Hill, who is the deceased’s
daughter-in-law, confirmed the Alderman Hill’s death but she was not at liberty
to immediately reveal finer details.

“He died last night and we are in mourning. We are compiling
a detailed information package about his life and death and we will share it with
the media,” said Alicca.

Charles Austin Theatre chairperson Charles Munganasa
expressed great sadness at the death of Aderman Hill whom he described as a
hero of the arts.

“He was a theatre hero and icon. He worked for the development
of young artists in Masvingo and we will always remember him for helping to develop
such young talent as Vamayaya, Sabhuku Vharazipi, Charles Munganasa and Khetani
Michael Banda.

“He worked hard to put Masvingo arts on the market. Masvingo
has lost a great person but he left a big legacy which we will always celebrate
for many years to come,” said Munganasa.

Alderman Hill served in the then Municipality of Fort
Victoria before retiring to focus on his businesses as well as on theatre.

He is probably best known as the owner of the Belmont Press
building complex which houses The Mirror newspaper which he started in 1992 as
Masvingo Mirror.

In the early 1980s, Hill started Masvingo Star newspaper which
he then sold to government’s NewZiana which ran the Community Newspaper Group
(CNG) which is now called the Community Newspaper Publishers (CNP).

Hill was a great lover and sponsor of theatre arts, having
worked with the then Masvingo Masvingo Theatre Circle now known as Masvingo
Theatre and Arts Club which is housed at Charles Austin Theatre.

The theatre was built in the late 1950s by a committee on
which Alderman Hill sat as a member.

Hero granny makes good use of her land

Mbuya Chisare is making good use of her piece of land

….but she still lacks proper housing

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Patricia Mahinzu (78), whose picture circulated on
social media while using her bare hands to build her own hut in September 2020
is still to get proper shelter, but her grandchildren are now enrolled at
Ratidzo Primary School courtesy of the generosity of well-wishers, TellZim can
report.

The grandmother is currently
receiving some food parcels from former Zaka West Member of Parliament (MP)
Festus Dumbu.

In September 2020, a picture of an old woman
hard at work using her bare hands to build a hut circulated on social media and
many people dismissed the picture as fake news.

Mahinzu, who is more commonly
known as Mbuya Chisare, stays in a resettlement area commonly known as ‘Kuma
3-Hectare’ some few kilometres behind Cottco Depot in Chiredzi.

She still stays in the hut which
she built for herself using farm bricks and thatches.

The torrential rains being received
in many parts of the country including the Lowveld have made her more apprehensive
as she fears that her homestead could be swept away.

In an interview, Dumbu said he was
pleased to be able to regularly help the old woman with such basics as food
parcels and clothings.

“Currently, the focus is on
her basic needs like food and clothing but I am also glad that we have managed
to build for her a fowl run where she will raise some chickens. Someone has
offered 40 Sasso chicks which will be delivered any day from now,” said Dumbu.

He said he was mobilising other well-wishers
to contribute to the construction of a proper house, with work expected to
begin sooner than later.

“Fees for all her three
grandchildren have been paid for and back school provisions were provided.
Mbuya havachazivi chinonzi maricho, courtesy of kind hearts from well-wishers,”
said Dumbu.

Last year, mbuya Chisare provided
her national ID which shows that she was born in Baye village near Jerera in
Zaka district on the September 12, 1942.

She said she was married to
Jalisi Maiza of Chijubana village in the Chitepo area of Chipinge South but he
died in July 2005.

They had two daughters and a son
but one of her daughters is now late.

Her second daughter, who has two
children of her own, is now a widow and is critically ill at her marital home
in Chipinge district.

Mbuya Chisare’s only son
illegally migrated to South Africa ‘many years ago’ leaving behind a wife and
three children and she has since completely lost touch with him.

She now looks after three
grandchildren including a 16-year-old girl who dropped out of school while
doing Grade 3.

After the death of her husband,
Mbuya Chisare went to live with her daughter and her son-in-law in Chipinge but
when the son-in-law died, she moved out as there was no more food at home.

She said she worked in the
resettlement areas for several years without a salary, but just for food so
that she would not starve.

Three years ago, she got a piece
of land in the Kuma 3-Hectare area, Buffalo Range where she built a pole and
mud hut.

Gogo Chisare’s daughter-in-law,
who was abandoned by her husband when he illegally migrated to South Africa,
then heard that she had found her own place.

She sought and found her; stayed
for a short period of time before disappearing, leaving all her children in the
care of Mbuya Chisare.

Mbuya Chisare managed to finishe
building her hut before the onset of the rains.

New Zanu PF Mwenezi DCC deputy chair dies of Covid-19

Cephas Shava

The new Zanu PF Mwenezi District
Coordinating Committee (DCC) vice chairperson Luckson Chikomo has died reportedly of
Covid-19 related complications, TellZim News has learnt.

Chikomo died on January 21 at
Collin Saunders Hospital in Triangle where he had been admitted with severe
symptoms of the disease which is caused by coronavirus.

Chikomo was elected vice
chairperson during the party’s DCC elections held between December 05 and 06,
2020.

A sugarcane farmer on the farms
in the Mpapa area, Chikomo deputised Gift Mazhambe who was elected DCC
chairperson during the internal party electoral process.

Fellow sugarcane farmer Francis
Garirayi said the farming community was devastated by the death of Chikomo whom
he described as a dedicated farmer.

“We have learnt with sadness
about his death. We have been robbed of a colleague who was dedicated to making
use of the land to contribute to economic growth,” said Garirayi.

Chikomo is said to have suffered
diabetes, an underlying condition which most probably precipitated his demise
after he contracted the virus.

Chikomo was a former employee of
sugarcane giant Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe.

Masvingo province has recorded
almost 40 official Covid-19 fatalities since the first lockdown was declared in
March 2020.

Lockdown: Family planning services running smoothly

Herbert Chikosi

…as ZNFC introduces new
contraceptives

Blessed
Chauke

The second round of
strict Covid-19 induced lockdown has made family planning services all the more
essential and the country’s  family
planning authority has given assurances that its work is still going on
smoothly.

As many young people
spent more of their time idle at home, the urge to experiment sexually becomes
more intense and this has resulted in many new cases of unwanted pregnancies
and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

Zimbabwe national
Family Planning Council (ZNFPC) Masvingo provincial marketing and
communications officer Herbert Chikosi said people should continue to expect
quality services from the institution.

“As an
organisation, we are open from 8am – 3pm during this lockdown and we are ready
to help those who need help. We also have community-based workers in different
communities who can assist people at home during this lockdown,” said
Chikosi

He said citizens should
make greater use of community-based workers so as to spare themselves the
hassles of travelling in the lockdown.

“We have different
centres around the country where people can access our services. We have the
Masvingo Centre of Excellence Clinic and the Tshovani Youth Centre in
Chiredzi.  We have another family
planning centre in Chikombedzi.

“As people wait for
their services, we share with then information on how we can all better protect
ourselves from getting infected by the coronavirus,” said Chikosi.

He said it was
unfortunate that the lockdown had put a stop on their community outreach meetings
where many issues of interest were discussed.

Chikosi, however,
revealed they now had new family planning products that have just been
introduced.

“Such new products
as the Sayana Press, new female perfumed condoms and new male condoms were
introduced. Many female users are finding Sayana Press convenient to them
because they can inject themselves and it lasts for three months,” said
Chikosi.

Swaziland-based Zim pastor publishes leadership book

0

…aims
to help guide leaders of the flock on virtue

Believe Mpofu

A young eSwatini-based
Zimbabwean pastor with the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) has published a
motivational book which he hopes will help church leaders and other people in
the ministry to maintain the right course.

Thirty-four-year-old
Gerald Vambire says said he took over a year writing the book which is titled
Church Leadership and Management, and which was published online in 2020.

Pastor
Vambire leads the AFM Greater Grace, in Mbabane, eSwatini, which is formerly
known as Swaziland.

The book is also
available in hard copy at a cost of US$10 and can be accessed at AFM New Life
Centre Mucheke in Masvingo.

The book has
seven chapters that provide some guidance on principles of leadership,
management, discipline and communication.

 “This
is the ministry’s work and I feel so happy that I have achieved something which
is significant to the fulfillment of the Great Commission. The book is all
about providing more inspiration to leaders of the ministry’s work so that they
will stay on the right course and they will not lead the people astray,” said
Pastor Vambire.

He
said he was passionate about leadership teaching and training, with the book
coming in as a stepping stone in helping him to achieve those goals.

“I
feel I can use my own ideas and experience to inspire other church leaders on
matters of principle; how to manage the church and initiate change among those
who are lost so that they can come back to the Lord,” he said.

Vambire
said the book was a result of hard work and commitment as there were many other
pressing issues that needed his attention in the course of the work.

The
church leader, who hails from Neshuro in Mwenezi, said he started serving as a
pastor in 2012.

The
book can also be purchased on Amazon using the link:

US Ambassador Brian A. Nichols (left) and part of his staff at the handover ceremony

TellZim Reporter

HARARE – The United States of America (USA), through the U.S.
Agency for International Development (USAID), has today, January 21, donated 20
brand-new, state-of-the-art ventilators to Solidarity Trust Zimbabwe to help
Zimbabweans fight Covid-19.

The handover was done by US
Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Brian Nichols in Harare.

“We are pleased to deliver 20
ventilators, which complement Zimbabwe’s efforts to combat Covid-19 and
demonstrate the United States’ ongoing commitment to supporting the people of
Zimbabwe through this crisis and beyond,” Ambassador Brian A. Nichols said at
the handover.

Produced in the US, the
ventilators reflect cutting-edge technology customized to Zimbabwe’s needs and
requirements.

Their compact and
easily-deployable design provides medical professionals with flexibility in
treating patients affected by the virus.

The ventilators are critical
especially to for individuals who develop respiratory complications due to
coronavirus infection.

In addition to the ventilators, USAID
will provide a tailored package of support, including installation, training
for healthcare workers, and a one-year service agreement for regular
maintenance.

This donation brings the United
States’ response to the pandemic in Zimbabwe to over $20 million, building on
previous investments to strengthen clinical care, disseminate health messages,
increase laboratory capacity, improve disease surveillance, and provide
humanitarian assistance.

In Zimbabwe, the United States
has provided US$3.5 billion in assistance since 1980, including $1.2 billion in
health assistance for diseases like HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria.

For decades, the United States
has been the world’s largest provider of bilateral assistance in health.  Since 2009, American taxpayers have
generously funded more than $100 billion in health assistance and nearly $70
billion in humanitarian assistance worldwide.

‘Mentally-unstable’ man attacks, damages two cars in town

0

The number of homeless mentally-challenged people is rising in Masvingo

…as
authorities ignore mentally-ill people

Perpetua Murungweni

A
man who is suspected to be mentally unstable recently appeared before Masvingo
Magistrate Grace Tupiri facing charges of malicious damage to property as
defined in Section 140 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter
9:23.

The
magistrate ordered that Richard Kamusikira be examined by two doctors to
confirm his mental and physically health.

This
was because the accused had behaved bizarrely and weirdly in court; cursing and
shouting at everybody at the top of his voice.

It
was the State’s case that Kamusikira had behaved in a disorderly manner at
Chifen Engineering comapny in Masvingo where he needlessly insulted company
employees and went on to use bricks to damage two motor vehicles.

One
of the employees, Lot Kweme then made a report to Chifen Human Resources (HR) manager
Elijah Mupenzauswa.

The
accused, in an explicable fit of rage, attacked Mupenzauswa’s Toyota Hilux vehicle
(Reg No AFG 4219) using a half brick. He went on to use a full brick to hit the
passenger-side screen of another vehicle, a Toyota Vitz (Reg No ABK 2432).

A
police report was made by Elijah leading to the arrest of Richard Kasimusikira.

The
total value of the damaged was put at $24 300.

The
number of mentally-challenged people is rising in Masvingo and authorities seem
not bothered, with the State-run Ngomahuru Psychiatric Hospital south of the
city woefully underfunded.

Late
last year, a mentally-challenged man attacked the glass doors of TV Sales &
Home, causing enormous damage to property.

Covid 19: Chief Charumbira dispels death rumours

0

TellZim Reporter

Reports that began circulating on social media earlier today that prominent traditional leader Chief Fortune Charumbira was dead are
false, TellZim News can report.

The wild rumours began circulating on WhatsApp in the
morning that Chief Charumbira had died of Covid-19 but there was no authoritative voice to authenticate the report.

Though TellZim News could not reach Charumbira on his own
mobile numbers, his wife Priscilla expressed concern that people had used social
media to spread malicious rumours.

“We are concerned by the rumours which are malicious. I have
no time commenting on them but they are false. I will pass the message to him
that you wanted to speak to him,” she said.

The National Chiefs’ Council president later spoke in the background
and dispelled the rumours that he was dead.

Chief Charumbira was elected vice president of the Pan-African
Parliament in October 2018.

Could Tugwi-Mukosi flood again?

Clayton Shereni

In
2014, Masvingo Province received heavy rains which swelled the giant Tugwi-Mukosi
dam displacing over 3 000 families and destroying with it millions of dollars’
worth of property and livestock.

The current
rains being received in the province are a reminiscent of the chilling February
2014 downpours which caused the Tugwi-Mukosi national disaster as the dam has
now reached a record 86 percent and the rains continue.

The continuous
swelling of Tugwi-Mukosi dam over the past weeks has posed a threat to the
people living downstream prompting the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) to be on
high alert.

The CPU
and Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) have reportedly alerted families
living downstream of the imminent danger as the rains keep pounding.

Tributaries
pouring into the dam are reportedly full to capacity and Muzhwi dam which is
upstream of Tugwi Mukosi is also spilling.

Speaking
to TellZim News, Masvingo’s Provincial Development Coordinator (PDC), Jefter
Sakupwanya said they were doing awareness with District Development
Coordinators (DDCs) in the areas likely to be affected in the event the dam
spills.

“What
is critical at this stage is to intensify awareness especially to communities
downstream because if the dam begins to spill they will be affected.

“This
is what we are doing with three DDC’S from Chivi, Masvingo and Chiredzi working
with traditional leaders so that we make people aware of the dangers of the
possible spilling,” said Sakupwanya.

He also
said that communities downstream should be re ready to move to safer places
which have already been identified.

“People
living downstream should be ready to evacuate those places and go to higher
grounds. We had already identified safe places to house during the alert of
Cyclone Chalane so we have places readily available,” said Sakupwanya.

Masvingo
province has been experiencing flash floods in recent weeks and many people
have lost valuable while some have been swept away.

A
family was marooned in Chiredzi, four lives were reportedly lost while some
families lost valuables in Chivi after the area received substantial rains
which prompted flooding of rivers and other areas with bad drainage.
