GWERU
– The Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr David Parirenyatwa has warned that the local municipal water is not safe for human consumption following a typhoid outbreak which killed some people in Mkoba and left many other hospitalised as of last week.
Speaking at an emergency meeting in the city, Parirenyatwa said people should be given water treatment pills to help curb the spread of the disease.
“People should be given pills to treat water and council should also provide water in bowsers so as to help curb the spread of the disease since Gweru water is not safe for consumption.
“A taskforce must be formed to meet daily to continue assessing the situation and the team should be led by the provincial medical director. Awareness campaigns should also be conducted with the help of NGOs for the people to know more about the disease,” said Parirenyatwa, who also called for exploration of other ways of fighting the disease.
He said it was the first time that Gweru had experienced a typhoid outbreak and urged members of the public to dispose of litter properly.
“We must also constantly check the water that we drink because sometimes pipes do burst and the water gets contaminated and some of the taps may be rusty. So we need to go to the root of the problem and work together to find a solution,” he said.
Before Parirenyatwa’s comments, Gweru City Council had blamed borehole and untreated water sources for the outbreak of the disease while maintaining that municipal water was safe to drink.
The Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs, Owen Ncube thanked the Ministry of Health for responding swiftly to the crisis and recommended that the council meet the cost of funerals for those who died of the disease.local

Inmates braaing on family day at Whawha Prison

GWERU – The Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Midlands is hosting a family week from August 13-19 at Whawha Medium Prison as part of the organisation’s rehabilitation programme.
ZPCS provincial public relations officer, Jerry Ruzive said the objective was to unite inmates with their families and loved ones, adding that the family played a big role in the rehabilitation process.
“We have families coming to see their relatives and loved ones who are in prison with the idea being to help them remain connected. The sense of belonging should not be lost simply because a person has been incarcerated. We can’t ignore the fact that the family plays a vital role in the rehabilitation of inmates.
“We are happy with the outcome because many families have already taken the opportunity to come and visit their loved ones. We are in our second year of this initiative and the response is good.
“Members of the public suggested that the programme be done during school holidays and public holidays when children are at home,” said Ruzive.
Emmanuel Dera, an inmate, expressed gratitude at being given a chance to see his loved ones in an almost usual family set-up.
“I am grateful to ZPCs for organising an event which has enabled me to interact with my family in a relaxed environment. We are also being treated well in prison although we face the usual problems associated with the country’s prison life,” said Dera.
Whawha Prison principal correction officer, station and rehabilitation coordinator, Clara Chingono said despite many challenges, ZPCS was doing its level best to ensure that the welfare of prisoners was met.
“All basic needs are catered for and in a week like this, we allow families to bring food stuffs and basics such bathing soaps, body cream lotions and others to their loved ones,” said Chingono.local

Crime rate up in Midlands

Commissioner General Godwin Matanga

GWERU
– There is a worrying increase in crime in the Midlands province, with an average 1 300 cases being reported per month, police have said.
Speaking during Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Commissioner General Godwin Matanga’s recent tour of Gweru, officer commanding Midlands province, Assistant Commissioner Charles Ndoro said the crime rate had increased by 12 percent in 2018 as compared to 2017.
“We have put in place measures to reduce the increase in crime. The province has recorded 7 801 cases for the period of January to June 2018 as compared to the 6 965 cases recorded during the same period  in 2017, translating  to a 12 percent increase in crimes committed,” said Ndoro.
He said police in the province were operating with inadequate equipment and vehicles, thereby negatively impacting on policing efficiency.
“There are a number of challenges being faced by the police in conducting their operations well and these include lack of proper equipment, depleted fleet in terms of transport, and backward structures.
“By its very nature, policing requires an efficient transport system for swift responses and the province in this regard has been operating on a depleted fleet thereby compromising the quality of the organisation’s services.
“Another big challenge we are facing is human and material resources shortages…there still exist some gaps in terms of our human resource deployments,” he said.
Ass Comm Ndoro, however, expressed optimism that with support from Comm Gen Matanga, the province will be able to do better in the fight against crime and create a safer society for all people of the Midlands.
In his own address, Comm Gen Matanga warned police officers who engage in corruption that they were living on borrowed time, adding that the organisation will not hesitate to fire any members caught on the wrong side of the law.

Grave in the house

…dead Mwenezi man buried in kitchen

Cephas Shava

MWENEZI – People in Village 4 Mangondi Ward 14 under Chief Chitanga and other surrounding communities were recently left tongue-tied after an elderly villager’s grave was dug inside his kitchen.
Following a short illness, the elderly man identified only as Magaya, who was in his late 70s, died and was buried last Thursday in one of his houses in the village.
Though no immediate comment could be obtained from Chief Chitanga, Councillor Admire Matutu of Ward 14 said he had also received reports of the strange burial.
“I did not manage to attend Magaya’s burial but I also heard that he was buried in a house. Originally the man is from Malawi, so I think his burial was in accordance with their culture,” said Matutu.
Other villagers who witnessed the burial process said the arrangement had left them with many unanswered questions.
“Several villagers are still shocked. Previously, we had witnessed the burial of some Malawians but we never heard of anyone being buried inside a house. The house where Magaya was buried had its floor levelled and people were told to continue using it as usual.
“What also baffles the mind is that we heard that he was buried with a knife in his hand,” said a villager who spoke on condition of anonymity.
The deceased reportedly married a local woman and settled in the village a long time back.
Sources said he had children from his previous marriage but did not have any with the local woman he married, who also had children of her own from previous relationships.local

Election mood lingers on

…anguished wait for ConCourt ruling

Clayton Shereni

The election mood in the country seems to be very much still with us despite President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s calls for the country to move on.
This is in light of MDC Alliance leader, Nelson Chamisa filing a Constitutional Court application, challenging the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec)’s declaration of Mnangagwa as the winner of the July 30 elections.
The court challenge has seen Mnangagwa’s inauguration, which would have been held on July 12, being put on hold pending the jury’s findings.
This has heightened expectations especially among citizens who are sympathetic to the opposition, with many of them hoping for Chamisa to be declared winner or, at least, for the results to be nullified to give way for a rerun.
Some people who spoke to TellZim News said they were confident that Chamisa will prevail.
“He has a strong case. There is overwhelming evidence that will make it impossible to dismiss the case without seriously damaging the image of the judiciary,” said one opposition sympathiser from Mucheke.
Another one said he agreed with Chamisa’s claims that he won the presidential election with over 2.6 million votes.
“I trust his claims that he won the election with over 60 percent of all genuine votes cast. Zec colluded with Zanu PF to cheat him of his victory and I hope the court will do the right thing without fear or favour,” she said.
A resident of Rujeko said Chamisa had a solid case against Zec but she did not trust the country’s judiciary.
“This is just waste of time because the court will rule in favour of Zanu PF. The court is under their implicit control, just like Zec is doing their bidding,” she said.
When contacted for comment, political analyst Dr Takavafira Zhou, however, expressed confidence in the judges’ capacity to deliver a fair ruling.
“The judges have to make history and that history can only be made by considering the voluminous evidence that was submitted. Unless there is pressure from some individuals, they will be objective because the evidence is very glaring,” said Zhou.
A team of judges led by Chief Justice Luke Malaba is expected to hear the merits of the case and make a decision in the next fortnight although Mnangagwa’s lawyers are fighting for the case to be dismissed on several technical grounds they have raised including that the case was purportedly filed later than the Constitution allows.
The court’s decision will be final, and in case that no rerun is ordered, the winner will be inaugurated by August 25.top news

So Hungwe is resigning?

0
Kkkkkk but Mangwana mukati dzakanyoti kwesere imi? This guy really never seizes to amaze Mapombi; honestly a whole learned person not knowing our courts are always closed on public holidays? Is he really a lawyer by the way?  Anyway, Mapombi will not doubt his qualifications, at least for now tongoti maybe he was overwhelmed by the burning desire to impress ED; ko vari kutsvaga basa ka comrade we all know that he is trying to resurrect his political career after being side-lined by uncle Bob’s administration for far too long.
Mapombi is always a gentleman handivanze ini; Mangwana is not as intelligent as he masquerades to be; kutorasika iko kuya kwakanditaridza zvakawanda. Now I understand why Zanu accused him of giving in to MDC demands during the constitution-making process gore riya. I am sure he was outmatched by Mwonzora ini. Trying to file opposing papers on Heroes’ Day?  Kkkkkkkk this is nothing but a sign of desperation regardless of whatever argument one may want to come up with. You cannot spin this one all you Zanu PF spin doctors!
Kkkkkkk but I understand Mangwana very much; the type of car he drives these days yeah, he should impress vakuru so that vanomutsvagira imwe. He tried Chivi Central twice achingoshagadwa naGwanongodza. They tried but in vein to label Gwanongodza a G40 but vanhu vekuChivi Central vakati muG40 ari nani pana Mangwana. The guy is unelectable!
Anyway, wish you all the best vaMangwana, may Zanu PF reward you for the hard work you are doing. Tiri kuzviona kushanda nepublic holiday when others were busy celebrating the lives of our gallant sons and daughters who fought for the liberation of this country.
By the way, what are the latest developments? I had some heads of state who had been invited for the inauguration vanga vatova muroad only to be told kuti zvavhariswa naChamisa kkkkkkkk. But usadaro vanhu vakuru mupfana Chamisa iwe. Let them have another five-year term vatonge tione kuti zvinodii. Tsvangirai said they can rig elections but they cannot rig the economy.
They forced Mugabe out saying there was no development that had taken place in the country for the past five years so we want to see what kind of development they will bring in the next five years. I can safely tell you that Uncle Bob was far much better because he was a dictator manje iyezvino takasunga dhongi nemombe pamwechete; the ox is pulling fast but the donkey is dragging its feet zvinotobhohwa. Kkkkkkk munoita zvekutamba naKedha kahi imi; mukaita zvekutamba he can command the army to shoot innocent civilians.
These days I am not sleeping quite well kwedu kuChitima market uku kutya kuti Kedha anotumira vakomana vakasvikobhomba zvimusasa zvedu zvema plastic in search of Mapombi. Manje ini handikutye Kedha, ndofirakureva ini the way you want to run this country haiite. You need political orientation Cde, with all due respect. Kukundwa naRugeje shuwa.
Kkkkkkk by the way who had the last laugh between Rugeje and Mutsvangwa? Mutsvangwa described Rugeje as a political novice after losing the Norton primary elections to little-known Langton. He later forced himself to be the candidate ndobva aitwei naTemba Mliswa. Zanu PF managed to win two-thirds majority in parliament wotoshaya kuti political novice ndiyani manje akadyiwa kuNorton or the commissar who won the party a parliamentary two-thirds majority.
I will not say much but know that empty vessels do make the loudest noise. Being verbose is one thing while being electable is quite another. The best advice Mapombi would give to Zanu PF is that this is the best time to separate chuff from sorghum. Chuck out deadwood.
Anyway, sekuru Josaya Dunira Hungwe promised that he will resign soon after elections so Mapombi just wants to ask kuti mava papi nhai sekuru neresignation letter? Probably, you are struggling to draft the resignation letter, Mapombi is ready to render her services for free sekuru. But may somebody please tell me kutamba nevazukuru kunorwadza here? Or is it that these comrades think that they know how to run this country better than anyone else zvekuti vanoti tikasiya mabasa aya nyika inofa or they are just selfish like Uncle Bob?
Hungwe was the governor for Masvingo for 17 years but he came back again as Minister of State, why why why Cdes? You mean there is no fresh blood in Zanu PF to bring in fresh ideas? It is not that I hate sekuru Hungwe but I am only saying vana sekuru vese ngavagare kumba vana vacheche vashande. After all, Zimbabwe ndeyedu tese iyi. Find new blood in Zanu PF and give them a chance to lead. We know quite a number who are able. Vafana vana Phainos Makwarimba avo munoti vangaikonewa province iyi here?
It’s almost lunch time guys let me go ndindokanga zvangu mhandire dzangu ndizvidyire ndakamirira kunzwa kuti matare achati kudii. My personal feeling hangu is that we should go for a re-run and Zec must behave. We want an independent body not an appendage of Zanu PF. We want an election commission which can independently deal with elections without consulting vana Kedha kuti pano apa todii.
Mapombi is optimistic that the judges will do their work nemo nemo. But before I go, we should live in peace. There is no need for us to fight or kill each other because of politics. Elections come and go but we will remain forever as Zimbabweans. Inga tongosangana wani tese maOK tichitenga maputi zvedu vamwe mabva kupolitics dzenyu dzo. Let us exercise tolerance. Our former VP Mphoko always wanted people to forgive each other and forge ahead. I am sure Mphoko still strongly believes in this; even though he was forced out of office akatoregerera vakamutadzira kare. But of course forgiving does not mean voting for ED. Mboko imboko!

Mberengwa murder fugitive turns self in

Tinaani Nyabereka

A Mberengwa man who allegedly murdered another at a bar in March recently turned himself in and was arrested after almost five months on the run.
Midlands province police spokesperson, Inspector Ethel Mukwende appealed to the members of the public to solve their disputes amicably and seek mediation so as to avoid unnecessary loss of life.
By the time of writing, Lameck Zhou (38) of Ushe village under Chief Muposi was due to appear in court on charges of murder related to the death of Tofara Zhou (46) of the same village.
Details gathered by TellZim News are that on March 29 at around 21:40 hrs at Chaza business centre, the suspect and the now deceased as well as other patrons were having a drink at a bar.
At that time, the bar lady identified only as Theresa (45), announced that people should leave as she now wanted to close the bar.
Lameck, however, refused to leave and Tofara intervened, telling him that he should allow the bar to be closed, and this led to a harsh exchange of words between the two.
Lameck got out of the bar and went into a disused building nearby with Tofara following him, but only to come out and collapse outside.
Tofara’s younger brother, who was also at the bar, rushed to find out what had happened and found his elder brother unconscious.
A Good Samaritan later drove Tofara to Chaza Clinic where he was confirmed dead upon arrival, and Lameck was nowhere to be found.local

The Zvishavane Women's Club building after the fire incident

Patience Muzhingi

The Association of Women's Clubs School of Cutting and Design building located in Slater Road, was last week gutted by fire as a result of an electrical fault triggered by a water heater left unattended, TellZim News was told.
Grania Tozivepi, group leader of the association, told TellZim News that the heater was left by a member of the club.
"This is not the first time it happened.  A few days ago, there was another fire which burnt a table and destroyed other things. The fire happened under similar circumstances after a heater was left unattended,” said Tozivepi.
Chief fire and rescue officer for Zvishavane, Rerai Muchara confirmed the incident and said there were no injuries or casualties.
The incident happened while everyone from the complex was outside.
Association head, Elizabeth Verenga said the fire was a big setback to the club as it happened when they were in the process of renovating the building.
"We were in the process of renovating the building before this unfortunate incident. I appeal to well-wishers to help with donations in the form of ceiling boards, tiles, cement or any other materials that can help us carry out extensive repairs on the burnt building," said Verenga.
She also said the association was looking for help from well-wishers to help reconnect electricity and restore many other services that were interrupted by the tragedy.

ZVISHAVANE – The first local Heroes’ Day commemorations without Robert Mugabe as President were held at Nhamodzenyika Heroes’ Acre some eight kilometres from the town at Siboza growth point.
The official speech was read to the public by the District Administrator (DA) Shepherd Marweyi who was the guest of honour at the event which was attended by many other dignitaries including Zvishavane-Ngezi Member of Parliament (MP) Dumizweni Mahwite and his Zvishavane-Runde counterpart, Cuthbert Mpame.
Traditional leaders present included Chief Mafala, Chief Masenda, Chief Mazvihwa, Chief Mapanzure and Chief Wedza
Chief Masunda urged the crowd to respect the fallen sons and daughters as well as all the living people who sacrificed their energy, resources, time and lives for the liberation of the country from racist White minority rule.
He also encouraged Zimbabwe to respect whoever is going to be inaugurated as President in the few days to come.
On his part, Mpame told TellZim News that this year’s Heroes Day commemorations were important for the ruling Zanu PF party as it was celebrating its victory in the July 30 harmonised elections.
“Today is a special day because we registered a thunderous victory in the July 30 elections. We are therefore not only celebrating heroes and heroines; we are also celebrating a great victory in the elections,” said Mpame.
Peter Ngwenya, a collaborator during the 1970 armed war of liberation, said he always relived the heroic exploits of those who gave their lives for the independence of the country whenever Heroes’ Day is marked.
“I had feared that the current political developments were going to lead to this year’s celebrations being cancelled but I am now happy that we are here. Many people died for us to be free. It is good that many other people have come together around the country to celebrate the sacrifices made by those departed sons and daughters of this land,” said Ngwenya.local

Ema stops Chipinge cross border litter bugs

The littered surroundings before Ema’s intervention

Stephen Ephraem

CHIPINGE – Cross border transporters that ply the Johannesburg-Chipinge route who had been in the habit of dumping rubbish at a lodge in Main Street met their match this week when the Environmental Management Agency (Ema) ordered them to clean up.
Residents of the low density area in the town had been complaining about the transporters’ behaviour.
When iTell News visited the lodge on Wednesday, litter had been cleared and the environs of the cross border transporters pick-up and offloading bay was clean. Residents that saw the clean-up exercise as well as neighbours of the lodge praised Ema for holding the reckless transporters to account.
“We have been complaining about the litter for a long time but the buses were resistant. It was bad seeing the transporters bring litter all the way from South Africa to dump it here,” said Noah Sigauke, who repairs vehicle close by.
A gardener who works near the cross border transporters bay said it was refreshing to see the scourge of littering declining.
“I always clean my premises but before the end of day, my yard would be filthy once again. They would throw plastics around and the wind would blow those plastics into my place. I hope the transporters shall continue to respect our environment,” he said.local
