Masvingo police issue rape alert

Inspector Charity Mazula

Nyasha Marumbi

MASVINGO – In response to the increase in rape cases against the disabled, especially the mentally challenged as well as the elderly, police in Masvingo have released a statement warning members of the public to treat any male person as a potential sexual abuser.
In the statement, provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Charity Mazula advises the community that the disabled and young children remain particularly vulnerable to cases of sexual abuse especially by close family members and other ‘trusted’ persons.
She urges collective protection of these vulnerable groups from people around them because the perpetrators normally take advantage of their limited physical capabilities to defend themselves.
“Parents are also advised  to  accompany little girls to and from school and avoid secluded roads and shun herding cattle alone since most perpetrators are taking advantage of the thick bushes to rape children coming from school,” the statements reads.
The statement also highlights that most cases of sexual abuse in the province are as a result of negligence on the part of parents and caregivers.
Members of the public are also advised that it is no longer time for the community to trust any male person and leave the girl child in their custody no matter how respectful they may appear to be.local

CHIVHU – Chief Mutekedza, born Andrew Zhakata, has urged his subjects to shun political violence ahead of elections this year, saying freedom of expression and association must be respected.
Chief Mutekedza made the remarks while addressing his subjects in Warikandwa, in Sadza recently.
The outspoken traditional leader said political violence was in nobody’s interests as it causes societal scars that take a long time to heal, thereby slowing down national development.
“Ikozvino tave kuenda kusarudzo, zvekurovana nekupinganidzana uyu achiti ndiriwebato rakati iwe uri werakati ini muno munzvimbo mangu ndazviramba. Kana uine rako gara naro siya ane rake akadaro. Nyaya dzakadai dzinokonzeresa matambudziko akawanda huye zvinotadzisa budiriro,” he said.
He went on to emphasise the need for respecting the supreme law of the land, the constitution, which guarantees freedom of expression and association.
“Constitution yedu iyi inoti munhu anotenderwa kuve nhengo yekereke kana bato rezvamatongerwe enyika raanoda iye pachake zvisina kumanikidzwa. Tinoda rugare, runyararo pamaelections apa,” he said.
He went on to castigate traditional leaders who align themselves with political parties saying it is unconstitutional.
“Imi masabhuku angu nema headman muripano, siyanai nezvematongerwe enyika constitution yedu haitendere. Kana aripo anozviita ibva wasiya nhasi. Vamwe hamutonyorane kuchibage uchinzi hausi wemusangano wakati. Ungatungamire sei musha iwe uchivenga vamwe vana vako muraini mako,” said Chief Mutekedza.
The meeting was attended by the Forestry Commission and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) which took time to explain the constitution to the people of Sadza.top news

12 Jan 2018 – MWENEZI – Zanu PF leaders have urged supporters to dump party regalia that bear the image of ousted President Robert Mugabe and embrace the latest version with the portrait of incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Addressing supporters at an inter-district meeting held at Rutenga Primary School last Saturday, Zanu PF national youth secretary Pupurai Togarepi said wearing regalia with Mugabe’s face on it was now taboo.
“Hembe dziya dzaive nepicture yaVaMugabe chimbodzimirai, ngadzimboiswa paside. Tave neitsva dzaPresident Mnangagwa. Kupfeka hembe dziya dzakare zvakafanana nemukadzi anoroorwa nemurume wechipiri. Hembe itsva dziri munzira dziri kuuya nehuwandu,” said Togarepi.
Togarepi, who preached development and urged party structures to unite, took councillors to task, threatening to make surprise visits to monitor progress in developmental projects that should be spearheaded by councillors in their respective wards across the district.
In his remarks, provincial chairperson Ezra Chadzamira likened Mugabe’s wife Grace to the Biblical Delilah who led a great man to his downfall.
The meeting was attended by several MPs and high ranking provincial and district officials.top news

Matutu subscribes TellZim News for Masvingo urban schools

Upenyu Chaota

12 Jan 2018 – Former MDC-T Masvingo Urban Member of Parliament (MP) Tongai Matutu has made a subscription deal with TellZim News for all primary schools in the constituency, a move he says will help to promote literacy and improve access to information.
He also subscribed for Mucheke Old People’s Home, Pioneer Cottages old people’s home and Alpha Cottages children’s shelter.
“TellZim News has earned for itself a unique identity due to its commitment to development and education. For this reason, I have seen it fit to make sure that the newspaper gets to the libraries of all primary schools.
“I also considered the plight of inmates at our charity institutions who would like to know more about their community but lack the resources. I believe TellZim News will keep them informed and entertained.
“I am going to subscribe more newspapers from other media houses in the long run but for now, TellZim News is a good starting point and pupils will benefit from the accurate reporting by the newspaper,” said Matutu.
Masvingo urban has a total of 11 primary schools and all of them will benefit from the gesture.top news

Matutu donates to underprivileged pupils

Mayor Hubert Fidze with some of the beneficiaries

Clever Taperamoyo

MASVINGO – Former Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) Member of Parliament (MP) for Masvingo Urban, Advocate Tongai Matutu last week Saturday organised a back-to-school charity event where he donated to orphaned and underprivileged school children.
The event, which happened at Boxing Arena in Mucheke and was facilitated by Dr Munyaradzi Chidarikire, saw 53 pupils receiving their full school fees for the term while others got satchels, counter books, khaki covers, socks and plastic covers among other goods.
Dr Chidarikire said the event was part of a programme which started with an earlier donation of school shoes to Early Childhood Development (ECD) pupils.
He said the donations were apolitical and plans were being made expand the list of beneficiaries in order to make sure that more deserving pupils get relief.
“We are planning to buy shoes for primary and secondary schools pupils. There are no political considerations that are made when we select beneficiaries; we just make an assessment to determine whether a pupil is really disadvantaged or not,” Dr Chidarikire said.
City of Masvingo mayor, Hubert Fidze said it was encouraging to note that the former legislator appreciated the need to reach out to the less privileged.
“I’m pleased with what the former Member of Parliament has done for our community considering the poor state of our economy. I wish we could have more of that kind of concern for those who are not as privileged as we are,” Fidze said.
Ratidzo Mazorodze, a parent to one of the beneficiaries, said the gesture had helped to lessen her worries now that the new school term has begun.
“As a parent I am happy. All the beneficiaries here are not at all in the best of circumstances and can hardly make ends meet. This is quite a relief and I will be able to see my child going back to school with others,” Mazorodze said.local

Omar humiliated at Mwenezi meeting

Joosbi Omar

Cephas Shava

12 Jan 2018 – MWENEZI – Retaining the Mwenezi East constituency in the upcoming general elections could be a very difficult task for Joosbi Omar who was last week jeered by party supporters at a Zanu PF inter-district meeting held at Rutenga Primary School.
The booing occurred during introductory remarks when tempers against Omar suddenly flared after provincial political commissar Jevas Masosota asked members of the party’s main wing to stand so that they could be introduced.
When Masosota was about to introduce Omar, the audience responded negatively.
“Hatimudi imbavha uyo wakatinyepera zvakakwana. Hatidyi mapromise isu. Hatina kupusa vana veMwenezi hatichamuda ngaende ngaende pawakadya pakakwana,” were some of the shouts from the floor.
Realising that the crowd would not entertain Omar, Masosota intervened and urged members to use proper methods to raise their grievances against the legislator.
The MP, who used to be showered with praises and given chances to address delegates during previous inter-district meetings, endured incessant insults at the meeting and was not given a chance to make even a mere slogan.
During his campaign in the by-election for the parliamentary seat last year, Omar made grandiose promises to the electorate but critics are not impressed by his record yet.politics

Lack of bridges: Shurugwi villagers’ love, hate for rainfall

Siyabonga Sayi

SHURUGWI – Villagers in Dorset area of Shurugwi South say as much as they eagerly expect a good rainy season for successful farming activities, they remain haunted by the obstacles to travel that the season brings due to flooded rivers and lack of bridges.
People who spoke to TellZim News said it was normal in the area for children to miss school for many weeks when rivers and streams in the area get flooded beyond their means to cross.
“There are three rivers that have always restricted business when it is wet; Kashambe, Mtorahuku, and Gwesheche. These rivers have cost us countless livestock every rainy season. When they are flooded it also means no school for our children sometimes for up to two weeks,’ said Dumisani Ndlovu.
Ward 21 Councillor Simon Kamurayi said the area was desperately in great need of bridges as that problem has existed for a very long time.
“My ward is in dire need of assistance to construct bridges to curb this problem because almost all the rivers within the constituency have no bridges and that is a danger to the life and welfare of the people,” said Kamurayi.
Other villagers who spoke to this publication blamed the local Member of Parliament (MP) Tapiwanashe Matangaidza for allegedly making false promises in the run-up to the 2013 elections and failing to raise local problems in parliament
“Honestly speaking, we were not expecting this kind of neglect from the MP. We last saw him when he was campaigning. We thought he would assist to construct bridges as he promised but has not done that,” said Bothwell Chaza.
Matangaidza is under pressure in the ruling Zanu PF party because of his alliance to the vanquished G40 faction.
Efforts to contact him for comment were fruitless as his mobile phone was not reachable.local

Chadzamira, Baloyi clash over G40 MPs’ future

Ezra Chadzamira

Beatific Gumbwanda

12 Jan 2018 – CHIREDZI – Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chairman Ezra Chadzamira and his chairperson clashed last week over what to do with Members of Parliament (MPs) who are identified as having been with the G40 faction.
At an inter-district meeting, Baloyi said Chiredzi had resolved to expel all MPs who had ties to the defeated faction but Chadzamira strongly disagreed, saying the party should move forward in unity. The targeted MPs are Darlington Chiwa, Denford Masiya, Robert Mukwena and Kalisto Gwanetsa.
“Chiredzi district resolved that I should present to you comrade chairman that all MPs be expelled from the party due to their links to the G40 cabal. There are youths who are complaining that they are victims of a corrupt stands scheme involving the MPs,” said Baloyi.
Chadzamira, however, exonerated the MPs saying factional differences must now be put aside.
“We no longer have factions in Zanu PF. I need to encourage you to unite as Chiredzi leadership in order to build our district and the country. We all know that the G40 once existed and some are still in existence but let’s all unite over the same cause. Takadzinga vatakadzinga kukasara vatakasara navo and I am not saying they are perfect, some are still conducting secret G40 meetings,” said Chadzamira.
He warned against mudslinging, unrestrained jostling for positions and candidates imposition.
“We are not going to impose candidates this year and the people will elect whoever they want. Hakuna asingadi kupinda mumaconstituencies atinawo even kwangu varikowo vari kutodawo but let us all unite pamwe chete and stop this thing,” he said.
Baloyi reportedly want Gwanetsa expelled so that he will be able to take his Chiredzi South constituency with little opposition while his ally Ronald Ndava wants Mukwena’s Chiredzi North. Another ally, Jevas Masosota is interested in Masiya’s Chiredzi East.
Of all the MPs from Masvingo who stand accused of having been with G40, only Paul Chimedza, Walter Mzembi, Daniel Shumba and Jeppy Jaboon were expelled and recalled from parliament.politics

Musikavanhu, Bhila to partner Bill Gates in development

Bill Gates

Beatific Gumbwanda

12 Jan 2018 – CHIREDZI – Local Zanu PF heavyweights and sugarcane farmers, Roy Bhila and Farai Musikavanhu, say they want to partner billionaire American businessman Bill Gates to develop the enormous untapped potential of the Lowveld.
Speaking during the launch of the Roy Bhila Foundation in Mkwasine recently, Musikavanhu, who is former agriculture director at Tongaat Hullet, mentioned Chiredzi North and West as particularly capable of contributing to the growth of the national economy due to the presence of large water bodies.
“These two constituencies have the potential to be among the top ten most developed areas in the country but currently, we seem to still be in the early Iron Age,” said Musikavanhu.
He said that they were in the process of inviting Gates, one of the richest man in the world, to be their development partner in Chiredzi.
“We are going to invite Bill Gates to be our development partner. He once landed at Buffalo Range Airport and drove to Singita Pamushana Lodge in Malilangwe and never passed through our town because it’s in a mess.
“We are also going to approach the American embassy to tell them that it’s now pay back time for the wealth they once amassed from our country,” added Musikavanhu.
Prominent American billionaires and celebrities have visited Singita Pamushana in Chiredzi include Bill Gates, Shakira and Paul Tudor Jones II.
Musikavanhu also disparaged current Chiredzi MPs claiming they were sleeping in parliament as they have failed to represent sugarcane farmers who are still identified with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce instead of the Ministry of Agriculture.
“Sugarcane is not being funded under the Command Agriculture initiative because it still falls under the Ministry of Industry and Commerce instead of the Ministry of Agriculture. Our MPs are failing to represent us and are sleeping in Parliament,” Musikavanhu charged.
Musikavanhu wants to contest in Chiredzi West on a Zanu PF ticket in the next election.local

G40 hijacked CSFAZ, says Bhila

Roy Bhila

…claims he is still SG

Beatific Gumbwanda

12 Jan 2018 – CHIREDZI – Former Commercial Sugarcane Farmers Association of Zimbabwe’s (CSFAZ) secretary general, Roy Bhila has declared that ‘Operation Restore Order’ will soon be employed at the organisation which he alleges has been hijacked by remnants of the G40 cabal.
Addressing Zanu PF district leaders at the launch of the Roy Bhila Foundation in Mkwasine recently, Bhila – who claims to be the legitimate secretary general of the association despite his faction’s defeat at elections held late last year – argued that the current executive had wrongfully usurped power.
Addmore Hwarare was elected CSFAZ chairperson to replace the Tawanda Mafurutu-led executive despite fierce opposition from the outgoing executive which said he was ineligible to contest, claiming he was not fully paid up as a member.
Sources close to CSFAZ new executive say the executive and councillors were also at loggerheads with new CSFAZ treasurer Collin Togarepi who is reportedly refusing to give meeting allowances.
Bhila however said the war was not over just yet, threatening that Operation Restore Order will soon spread to the association.
He said the association was on the brink of collapse just like what Zimbabwe had become under Robert Mugabe and G40.
“I worked for the association as the secretary general and I am still the secretary general although some people of the G40 hijacked the association.
“It’s not over yet and the game is still on. If they have the power then why did over 200 farmers refuse to pay up after they got elected? The association has about 340 subscribed members and if 200 of them are in support of Bhila and his executive members, it means we are still in power. Operation Restore Order is going to be there at CSFAZ,” said Bhila.
Bhila and his executive were accused of maladministration and abuse of funds while they were still in office. It was alleged that he was using the association’s resources to campaign in Chiredzi North where he hopes to be MP.
“They say we stole from the association but to my surprise, we are not being prosecuted, why? Resources I used for developing Chiredzi North came from my sweat and nowhere else,” said Bhila.politics
