Four injured as flea market collapses

At least four people were injured, one of them seriously and goods worth hundreds of dollars destroyed when a row of flea market stalls collapsed in Mandava, Zvishavane on Fiday last week.
The police quickly reported at the accident scene but many people said they were surprised to see them in anti-riot gear as if anticipating a violent reaction from the vendors.
The injured were ferried to Zvishavane District Hospital in a Fire Brigade truck as the council ambulance took a very long time to arrive at the scene.
Three of the injured vendors were treated of minor bruises and scratches but one was admitted with serious head injuries.
Angry traders at the flea market who attributed the accident to structural faults of the market stalls said they had reported the structural problems to the council about three weeks back, but no action was taken, resulting in the collapse.
The vendors complained about poor service delivery by the council, which they accused of ignoring critical areas like public safety, clean water and the sewer system.
“Kanzuru iyi marara chaiwo, chavanoda kutora mari dzedu chete pasina kana chavanoita, iye zvino mvura inouya yakasviba, sewage pose pose and now flea market yawa asi rent vanotora every month” (This council is useless, they are just concerned with collecting rentals and not delivering),” said one stall owner.
“They are good for nothing, all they do is just sitting in their offices pretending as if they are working for the residents of Zvishavane yet they are doing nothing. They let everything go to the ground like this. They are just concerned about themselves not us,” said another trader.
Representatives of the vendors were locked in a closed door meeting with the council officials where they were reportedly promised that new and stronger stalls will be built for the affected people.
The town engineer, Lameck Gozho, was not seen on the accident scene in the immediate aftermath of the disaster, with some people saying it was characteristic of the council leaders to isolate themselves from what happens on the ground.
Efforts to get comment from council officials were fruitless by the time of going to print.news

Zanu-PF Masvingo Youth Provincial Chairperson Nobert Ndaarombe, who was last week reported in some sections of the media as having been beaten by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s allies at a Masvingo Urban inter-district meeting at Nemamwa for selling out the province to G40, has dismissed the reports as false. 
Ndaarombe was reportedly assaulted together with Secretary for Legal Affairs Henry Chinovava, for working against Mnangagwa’s presidential aspirations.
“I was shocked to read in the press that I was attacked and injured by rivals. I want to set the record straight that the media often magnify matters beyond proportion.
“Chinovava and I are ok and we were never assaulted. It is very normal that when you gather people around there are others who disagree with decisions being made and it’s not a crime to disagree. In a party where there is democracy like Zanu-PF, it is common for people to agree to disagree but in the end a common ground is reached,” said Ndaarombe.
He admitted that there was some commotion at the meeting but no one was assaulted.
“There was a verbal confrontation with some people disagreeing with the decisions being made. Even though some people may not agree with some of the decisions made and the course of action to follow, in Masvingo we are united.
“If you listened to what President Robert Mugabe said in Gutu you will have a better understanding of the affairs in Zanu-PF. As a province we agreed that we will rally behind the President and his wife and for someone to come and tell us to back Mnangagwa when he himself was appointed by the President will be something else.
“We are working hard as the youth to make sure that the President wins the 2018 elections and making sure that all those who may be blown by the so-called winds of change come back to the revolutionary party,” Ndaarombe added.news

The Zvishavane Criminal Court was left in stitches when an accused man appearing in the court on charges of theft told the court that he was born on 1 July in May after Magistrate Sherpard Munjanja had expressed doubts over his given age.
Tapiwa Chipowa who claims to be 21 years of age, was asked by the magistrate to state his year of birth but he responded saying he was born on 1 July in May, drawing laughter from the gallery.
It is the State’s case that on May 12 2016, Chipowa who is usually hired to offload cargo at Pote Supermarket in Zvishavane town centre, decided to give himself a ‘bonus’ by taking two crates of empty soft drink bottles with the aim of selling them.
The matter came to light when the offence was discovered with Chipowa being the prime suspect.
After his arrest, Chipowa confessed to have taken the property.
In mitigation Chipowa said he was drunk and blamed alcohol for influencing him to commit the crime.
“Andizivi zvakaitika musi wacho sezvo ndaiva ndamwa chapomba – mbarure (I don’t know what transpired since I had taken some strong spirits). 
 He was slapped with a 2 months sentence wholly suspended on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next three years. All the stolen bottles were recovered.

Villagers of Musavengana in Bikita have dragged their local authority Bikita Rural District Council (RDC) over a land dispute.
 Nevison Matambura, who represents the villagers, said council want to seize their land and incorporate it into the Nyika commonage without compensating the villagers for the loss.
“We have approached the courts; we want villagers to be compensated. We have been receiving threats from local leadership that they will take stern measures against us if we continue pursuing the matter at the courts but we are not deterred.
“We want justice and council should compensate villagers for the loss of land. We are not resisting development but we want it to be done on a win/win situation,” said Matambura.
Headman Mupakwa, Clemence Vengai Munyika, whom the villagers accused of siding with the council and threatening them, said he was engaging the council so that all the families affected get at least two residential stands each before they are relocated.
“I don’t know what they are talking about if they say I am siding with council. I am only interpreting the law and, in fact, I am engaging council so that they get at least two stands each before they are relocated.
“There are however, some families that were illegally resettled by the village head and these might not get the same number of stands as others but certainly they are not going to be moved empty-handed,” said Mupakwa.
 “Villagers approached me to help them get their compensation from council and I have been doing that whole heartedly. I have never threatened anyone and it would be very silly of me to threaten my own people and relatives,” said Munyika.news

“Without financing from the New Business Development Revolving Fund, I don’t know where my business would have been standing. Through  a loan from the fund I have managed to turn my business into a thriving enterprise. I am able to make a gross profit of up to UD$2 500 a month and have managed to transform my standards of living through building a residential home.
This is the success story of one Thabolwethu Mudota on how her life was transformed by a fund provided by the City of Masvingo in partnership with their German twin city, Kernen.
Mother Theresa once said, “Kind deeds can be small and easy to note but their echoes are truly endless.” 
Those words capture the benefits Masvingo has derived from simple exchange of ideas and resource mobilisation with the City of Kernen since the 1990s.
Among the welfare and poverty alleviation programmes run by Masvingo in partnership with the New Business Development Revolving Fund and Kernen is the upkeep of Mucheke Old People’s Home, Alpha Cottages, which has uplifted the lives of many locals.
City of Masvingo Town Clerk Adolf Gusha says the twinning has resulted in improved service delivery, infrastructure development and financial assistance.
“One of the things in the binding protocol between the two cities is the sharing of ideas in service delivery, participation and involvement in city business. Basically, the exchange of ideas between the two cities has seen considerable development taking place.
“Kernen has supported us a lot through, among other things, the donation of a refuse truck, the construction of the city’s sole craft centre, construction of several structures at Mucheke Old People’s Home and Alpha Cottages. These include a dining hall, kitchen and borehole.
The construction of Runyararo Clinic was also financed by donations from Kernen,” Gusha said.
In other areas of further cooperation, council is set to receive a used refuse compactor.
“…the City of Kernen indicated that they would look for a second hand refuse compactor to be donated to the City of Masvingo. It was reported that the cost of transporting the vehicle would be met by the City of Masvingo,” read part of recent council minutes.
“…the Masvingo-Kernen Association indicated that they were sourcing funding for the construction of Runyararo Clinic Maternity Wing. It was reported that the Association intended to fund half of the construction work for the maternity wing,” the minute read.
Meanwhile Mayor Hubert Fidze and Ward 10 councilor Lovemore Mufamba recently volunteered to be fire fighters after the Town Clerk’s report on their visit to Germany noted that Kernen Fire Brigade had 55 volunteers. 
The report recommends a voluntary fighter fighting framework starting with council employees.news

Zanu-PF is now a dead party in its early decomposing state, the former Minister of State for Provincial Affairs for Masvingo Kudakwashe Bhasikiti has said, dismissing claims that he desperately needs to rejoin the ruling party after he was booted out for supporting former Vice President Joice Mujuru.
Bhasikiti, who used to consistently attack President Robert Mugabe has suddenly toned downed, a development which analysts said the former Mwenezi East legislator was trying to curry favour with the nonagenarian, with the intention of being readmitted now that Zanu-PF has set up an appeals tribunal to look into the issues around the expulsion and suspension of members.
The former minister and other expelled members have since formed the Zimbabwe People First (ZPF) which is being led by Mujuru. Bhasikiti, however, said although he has forgiven Mugabe for he did not know what he was doing, he still wants Mugabe to apologise to all expelled members for unfair treatment. 
“Some people say, ‘Bhasikiti is being apologetic and wants to trace his footsteps back to Zanu-PF’, but that will not happen under the sun. I am now a full-fledged member of the Zimbabwe People First party (ZimPF). As ZimPF we call on all those expelled not to waste their time appealing their cases because Zanu-PF is now a dead party. Those in Zanu-PF should come and join us because we are the only party which can remove Mugabe from office,” Bhasikiti said.
 “When I said I had forgiven Mugabe it was misconstrued by some to mean I was courting a pardon from Mugabe but that’s not the case. I also said ZimPF will not persecute Mugabe when we take over power. This is not a way of trying to earn favours from him but is because he is too old for that,” he added.
Bhasikiti slammed the appeals committee put in place by Zanu-PF to enable all the expelled members to challenge their suspensions.
“It is extremely surprising to hear Zanu-PF asking those it expelled or suspended to write letters of appeal. Unashamedly, they set up a kangaroo court to hear those appeals.
“To me and others like our president Dr Joice Mujuru, ZimPF stands as the only party which carries the hope for the economic and democratic freedoms which have been destroyed by Mugabe.news

Masvingo City Council has pledged to finance the fledgling Masvingo City Football Club to the tune of over US$30 000 to enable the club to sail through the upcoming soccer season.
A recent full council resolution seen by TellZim News indicates that the council has made a   commitment to give a US$34 850 grant to the football team for the 2016 soccer season.
However, proposals by the Mayor, Hubert Fidze, that council lease Farai Beerhall to the club for the generation of income for its activities did not sail through after it failed to garner the support of the relevant committee.
The committee instead suggested that funds saved from the slashing of travelling and subsistence allowances for councillors be channelled towards sporting expenses.
The Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing last year issued a directive that councillors should not carry out study tours or workshops outside the council area and that senior employees’ salaries and allowances be slashed.
Masvingo City FC needs US$45 000 to complete the season and council has committed to honour their initial requests for just over US$30 000.
Meanwhile indications are that towns like Karoi are funding their local football clubs to the tune of US$100 000 per season.news

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) has garnished over US$100 000 from the Masvingo City Council bank account in reaction to the local authority’ failure to pay the money it owes the taxi collector.
Even though the exact amount of the debt owed to ZIMRA could not immediately be ascertained, Masvingo Mayor, Hubert Fidze said service delivery has been compromised by this latest setback.
“I am currently away and haven’t been given the finer details as to how much we owe ZIMRA which led them to take such drastic action. I believe though that the money we owe runs into millions.
“Our account has been emptied and we are worried because the money could have been put to good use and improve service delivery,” said Fidze.
He said council is facing liquidity challenges owing to non-payment of rates, a problem which has been compounded by the current cash shortages in the country.
“We cannot operate optimally because and service our debts in time because residents and government departments are not paying their bills at all yet we have to pay salaries so this garnishee order is a blow to us,” said Fidze.
Asked what measures council will take to force long defaulting government departments to pay, Fidze said they are considering employing the services of debt collectors against all defaulters.
“A motion has been moved to give names of all defaulters to the debt collectors but nothing has been finalised yet. At the moment, we plead with residents and institutions to come and make payment plans with the city council so that we may avoid any inconveniences,” said Fidze.
Last year, it was revealed that council was owed in excess of US$30 million by government departments with the police, army and prison services constituting the biggest defaulters.

Masvingo’s upcoming Zim Dancehall artist Brian Nyangombe popularly known as Yellow Tom has composed a song called Baba Vauya to honour Chivi Rural District Chairman and philanthropist Dr Killer Zivhu for the charity work he has done in the country, helping orphans and vulnerable families.
Nyangombe who himself is not a beneficiary of any of Zivhu’s philanthropic work, said he was inspired to compose the song after learning from a friend whose family Zivhu had rescued from hunger by donating food to them. 
Speaking to TellZim News, Nyangombe said he wished to see Zivhu extending his generous hand to help disadvantaged youths resident in the ghettoes develop their talents and build their lives.
“Killer Zivhu is like a father to those who are in need of help as shown by the non-profit work he has done for some time now. This is my way of thanking him and encouraging others who might be taking philanthropy work lightly. I would like to shoot the video of this song with him,” said Nyangombe.
He called upon other more privileged people in Masvingo to emulate Zivhu in helping the needy and disadvantaged people in the province.news

That was not the case anyway, Mapombi heard President Mugabe was in Gutu last Friday paying condolences to the Masanganise family following the death of Chief Gutu some three or so years back. Mapombi heard the late chief was President Muagbe’s sekuru chaivo chaivo – haa Mapombi is a gentleman guys kuvanza handigoni. Ndokunonzi kubatwa kumesoka uku – where were you all along Mr President? KwaZvimba kukafiwa mungaita three years musina kundobata maoko? Sekuru venyu chaivo chaivo? Haa Mr President tinyareiwo!
I know people like me Mapombi zvangu we are not being taken serious mutown umu because of dressing yedu yemamvemve iyi but pamwe tinotaura idi. You cannot tell me kuti sekuru vanofa tozondobata maoko afta three years? Inga basa rinokuwandirai zveshuwa. By the way he is the Head of State, Commander In-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, Chancellor of all Universities and First Secretary of the ruling party – yaaah basa rakawanda zveshuwa! 
Anyway, I am a nonentity in this country and no one would listen kumunhu anopfeka mamvemve asi apa makativhara apa. I hope makasiya henyu mari pamakauya and you also managed to campaign since 2018 is fast approaching otherwise zvehukama chaiwo chaiwo handihuoni ini. And you were not even aware that ambuya vakazoshayawo futi – haaa basa rakaoma vakomana. Now Mapombi knows that President is really a busy man and I’m sure that is the reason he also does not know where our $15 billion is? 
Mapombi is sure this is why the President is not aware that our roads are in a sorry state, our clinics do not have medicines and our economy has taken a nose dive. We should understand the President, Cdes. Don’t mind that he sacrificed to get time for war vets or his birthday celebrations at Great Zimbabwe Monuments – which is just 100km away from Chief Gutu’s homestead. At least Mapombi is happy that vakazowanawo time vakauya kuzobata maoko asekuru vavo.
Mapombi however, has a message for President Mugabe – vamwe vakaudzwa hondo nemurwere wepfungwa vakamushora asi dai mambonditererawo. Masvingo is a big province with quite a number of people who are registered voters – please don’t take them for granted.  There is no development to talk about in Masvingo; Tokwe Mkosi dam is still under construction since independence and nothing more. People need development and nothing more, nothing less. Mapombi knows that the Mazezuruland – aah inonzi Mashonaland zviyaka, is well developed ndokune zveseka kuno vanhu vachidya nhoko dzezvironda. Mapombi anongokumbira one thing – tinyareiwo!
