MUTARE – The Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Service (ZPCS) last week embarked on a belated tree planting day at Mutare Farm Junior Primary School as a way of reminding the public the importance of trees in the sustenance of life.
Some of the trees which were planted include the gum tree and the indigenous mukamba, which was named tree of the year in 2016.
Cheneso Mbambo, Mutare Forestry Commission Regulations Officer, said the public should follow the example set by the ZPCS so as to protect the natural environment.
“Mukamba tree was named the tree of the year in 2016 for its usefulness in producing wood for furniture and many other uses. We encourage people to follow the example set by the ZPCS. If we all start growing trees, our kids and their descendants will have clean air to breath and a lovely environment around them,” she said.
Nyaradzo Funeral Services Manicaland provincial manager, Fortune Mawayo, who was the guest of honour also emphasised the significance of trees.
“Let everyone plant trees because they are a symbol of life. If one tree can provide four people with oxygen, imagine what a thousand will provide. Besides providing oxygen, trees help to protect the land from soil erosion,” said Mawayo.
Among many other respected people who attended the event was Acting Officer Commanding Manicaland Province, Kenny Ndebele.local
