Mwenezi District’s Neshuro and Nikita High Schools were recently crowned netball and soccer champions, respectively for the inaugural Mwenezi Rural District Council’s (RDC) CEO’s tournament.
The trophy is being sponsored by Mwenezi RDC and Mwenezi West Member of Parliament (MP) Priscilla Moyo Zindari. Six schools participated during the inaugural tournament namely Neshuro High, Nikita High, Budirirai High, Mayezi Secondary, Maranda High and Tafara Secondary Schools.
Speaking to TellZim News, Zindari who added cash prizes for the winners said the tournament was important as it gave learners exposure and at the same time good mental and physical health.
“The tournament is important because it helps maintain learners’ physical and mental health, it is also important because the time spent during games will prevent them from doing bad things like drug and substance abuse.
“Council took a bold step leading by example in supporting learners’ games that is why I have also chipped in with cash prizes to complement council’s efforts,” said Zindari.
Neshuro netball team coach Stephen Mpofu applauded Mwenezi RDC for supporting schools sports in the district.
“We are grateful; the tournament exposed our players and we will work hard to defend the title next year. The tournament also helped us to prepare for other tournaments that are coming,” said Mpofu.
Dorren Muchara applauded her netball team saying it was foreseeable that they would win the tournament because of the quality netball players they have.
“Neshuro netball team outclassed other schools because it has excellent players, scouters must come to rural areas to look for talent because most of the players like those in Neshuro fit in any professional team. They should be given chance to showcase their talents at national level,” said Muchara.
Neshuro and Nikita got $450 each for coming first in Netbal and Soccer respectively. The two teams also got $200 each for coming second; that is, Nikita in netball and Neshuro in soccer.
Maranda High came third in netball, while Budirirai High took the same spot in soccer and both teams received US$150 each. Tafara Secondary and Mayezi Secondary were number four and walked away with $100 each.
