As the wet spell continued until earlier this week, Lake Mutirikwi in Masvingo has spilled for the second time in more than a decade, a development that has brought hope to farmers along the Mutirkwi River.
Mutirikwi, the second largest inland dam after Tugwi-Mukosi is home to the Mutirikwi mini hydro-power plant which provides 5MW and is feeding to the national grid as the country goes through one of the most devastating loadshedding where citizens endure power blackouts of more than 15 hours a day.
Statistics from Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) showed that 12 of the major dams in the Runde Catchment were already spilling including Muzhwi, Ngezi, Tokwane and Manyuchi.
ZINWA warned people in the downstream of the Lake Mutirikwi Catchment area to exercise caution in the development of the lake spilling.
Tugwi-Mukosi the largest inland dam in the country was filled to 70.6 percent capacity while Mushandike was at 62.4 percent full.
Manjirenji and Siya dam had 20.6 percent and 17 percent respectively.
