06 March 2017, MASVINGO – A Chivi man will this week appear in the High Court of Masvingo for allegedly murdering his friend who was also his neighbour for calling himself “Chibaba”, a chant derived from one of Soul Jah Love’s song lyrics which is understood to be an allusion to a ‘real’ man.
Thirty two-year-old Lameck Charidza, residing at Giri village under headman Chipundu in Chivi, will be charged for murder as defined in Section 47 (1) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23.
On June 3, 2015 at around 1900 hrs, the accused was reportedly drinking beer with the now deceased Prosper Chamaona (24) at Mupanguri Primary School when a dispute arose between the two over who should be called “chibaba”.
The dispute degenerated into a physical fight as Charidza is alleged to have wanted the ‘honourable’ title to be his sole preserve.
Sausseki Nyandoro, a teacher at that school called Berejena police after trying and failing to stop the fight which left the now deceased unconscious.
The two were taken to Matibi Hospital where Chamaona was pronounced dead on arrival.
A post mortem was conducted which showed cervical subluxation.
A psychiatrist at Chikurubi Maximum Prison, Dr Mhaka, however, indicated that the accused was mentally challenged at the time of the offense.local
