Byo businesses hold charity golf tourney for KG6

Staff Reporter

The Bulawayo business community last week hosted a charity golf tournament for King George VI Centre (KGVI), a centre for persons with disabilities.

The Centre is one of Zimbabwe’s foremost disability advocacy organisations, supporting the rights of children with disabilities and those with hearing impairments through access to education, sign language, rehabilitation, independent living, sports, and vibrant performing arts programmes.

KGVI Administrator Lomaswati Mavhangira expressed her gratitude to the business society of Bulawayo who generously supported them.

“Lately we have been struggling to provide adequate food and resources for our children due to financial instability.

“As KGVI, we are grateful to the business community of Bulawayo for coming to our aid at such a critical time,” said Mrs Mavhangira.

The tournament was hosted at Bulawayo Golf Club on Saturday, October 8, 2022. The event was overseen by KGVI staff and students who brought music and dance as part of entertainment for the day.

The Tournament Convener Mr Shlomo Lepar said that the purpose of the charity fund was to support the financial stability and viability of KGVI.

“It was an absolute honour and privilege to help and organize this wonderful charity day. It’s with much thanks to the commercial and industrial sector for supporting us so generously in the sponsorship of holes and prizes.

“Our aim is to ensure that this becomes an annual calendar event because it goes a very long way in aiding the financial stability and viability of KGVI,” said Mr Lepar.

The charity event included a golf tournament, a raffle and an auction; all meant to raise funds for KGVI.

The beneficiaries of the funds raised on the day are going to be children with disabilities at King George VI as well as the centre itself.

One of the organizers of the tournament from KGVI, Precious Ncube also said that the funds will go towards the revival of the independent living programme which had since been stopped due to economic challenges.

“We are so grateful. Independent living is critical in grooming and preparing children with disabilities for social life after school,” said Precious.

Independent living is a programme at King George Centre where children with disabilities are taught about the activities of daily living (Adl) such as cooking, grooming, cleaning and washing among other activities.

Under this programme, children will be given food which lasts for a week and be taught to budget and manage it on their own.

Other companies who sponsored the holes at the tournament included Mine Machines, Cimas, APG, Safeguard RSC Steelforce, Arenel, PolyFoil, BHc, Liquid Technologies, ZB Bank, AutoWorld, Gurus Holdings, ZIB, ICZ, FBC, Cabs and Old Mutual, Edgars Club Plus, Jet and The Butcher Shop.

The Prizes were sponsored by Femina Garments, Pick N Pay, Lemonseed, Arenel, Parker Paints and Fortwell. The Donations at the tournament were made by KB Davies, Mr Anand and Acol.

Profoam also made a donation towards KGVI of 25 mattresses which will be used at the hostels.

Companies that also participated at the tournament include Isuzu Motors.

More fireworks expected at Lake October Great Zim Festival

The much anticipated Lake October Great Zimbabwe Tourism Festival is set to light up the ancient city with more activities being lined up for the three day event this coming weekend.
Speaking at a press conference at Chevron Hotel in Masvingo, Lake October Great Zimbabwe Tourism Festival Head of Public Relations Tavita Mpala said there will be more activities including boat cruising and quad biking at slashed prices.
“We have major discounts for state of the art boat cruises from Thunder Run going for US $20 for a 15 minute cruise, prices for the quad bikes have been slashed to US$ 5.
“We have made efforts to ensure that everyone participates, we have a family fun day on the 22nd where entrance to the monuments is free with free activities like Zumba, Tug of war.
“We have roped in other entertainment sectors for the benefit of everyone in the province hence there will be a pre-party at Liquids Club International on Thursday,” said Mpala.
“We are expecting to make about USD $1,5 million not only as Lake October but as a Province, Hotel bookings are already at 85 -90% full and we have had ticket sales from people outside Masvingo from places like Chipinge, Victoria Falls, Kariba,” said Mpala.
Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Regional Manager Daniel Mumpande placed emphasis on the importance of festivals in bringing tourists to a destination.
“Festivals play an important role in bringing tourists, you can’t just come to Masvingo and see the Great Zimbabwe monuments and go back, you need to have some other activities to do like boat cruising which is one component that is missing in the province.
“We can have a resort where so many smaller activities can take place like a water world theme park as we have so much water in Lake Mutirikwi which is available to investors in that sector.
“The locals are going to benefit from participating as well as making sales,” said Mumpande.
E-square, M-Kay, K Gizzy, Jackson, King Shella, Spaction, Majesty, Tanaka D- Wemagetsi, Wekwamaramba the jazz artist and JP Magetsi are some of the local artists that will be performing at the festival.
Coincidentally Great Zimbabwe University is having its graduation which will likely make a buzz for ticket sales at the event.
Masvingo is home to some of the biggest water bodies in the province and there is need for investment in recreational facilities such as boat cruising and other water based activities.

All organisations with Zim or Z should be disbanded

Ladies and gentlemen, the tempo is always rising and political temperatures have reached another level as we march towards 2023 where the decisive harmonized elections are set to be held. Yes, of course they are decisive in the sense that it presents an opportunity or chance to amend where people did wrong as a nation between 2017 and 2018. We hoped that things will change for the better but we have realised that we were wrong.
I hope next year people will vote wisely and give Zanu PF another chance to rectify what has been failed since 1980. Give them another chance, at your own risk of coz kkkk. You all head the Head of State and Government who is also the commander in chief of the Zimbabwe defence forces and chancellor of all state universities lying to Chiredzi people that electrification of rural communities is set for end of October after he through Rwandese Kagame sourced for funds from mysterious investors. Imika imi, tinyareiwo zvedu. Chete I don’t blame him, mabasa ake akawandisa and he is overwhelmed, all that I mentioned above for one person, ko zvimwe zvandisina kutaura. Instead of talking about mordenising schools in Chiredzi busy with lies, nxaa. Didn’t he see mud and pole classroom blocks at several if not all schools in the area that resemble the ‘Stone age’ era? Kana asina kuzviona someone must be fired. You can’t take a president to an area and deny him access to that reality. Haa it’s high time you people of Chiredzi North wake up from that slumber and smell the coffee.
I had vowed not to give this clown called Baba Beritha unnecessary attention but this time I cannot just ignore. Dougie let me set the record straight to the point; we are sick and tired of your cheap politicking as you continue recalling the people who were elected by the people. Please stop it iwe Mwonzora, I repeat again Stop it. Ladies and gentlemen, this Dougie thing needs to be tamed urgently to restore sanity. We can’t continue pumping resources for by elections caused by one bitter man, Nooo mhani.. Who are you representing Dougie, what do stand for? What do you command? I am sure even Beritha aakutonyadziswawo nababa vakadai. Bhaibheri rinomboti baba vebenzi havana mufaro, but apa vana vebenzi ndivo vasina mufaro. Stop recalling people and enjoy a sit in Polad. Let me just warn you in advance, Kugarika mwena unoguma uye hapana chisingaperi. The political grave you are digging is too deep for you to appear on the surface one day. Asi vo vakatumidza kuti Togarasei vakanga vazviona.
On a serious note, more than Dougie’s, I think anything that has a Zim or Z at the beginning should be disbanded at start afresh or even banned. I used to think it’s the Z that is cursed but have seen Zambia doing well. Look at what Zimsketch, Zimsec I mean; look at what it is doing. Overcharging exam fees and now the exams are leaking. They cannot run an examination inoyorwa nevana sure what a shame, that should just be disbanded titange imwe itsva isina Zim. Look at ZACC, its busy doing corruption which it is supposed to curbing, zvinonyadzisa. This John Makamure thing used to deny the press information on their operations izvo iye is the most corrupt. ZIFA hatichatauri, ZIMSTAT haisat yapedza kupa vanhu mari nanhasi and the results are still trickling in. ZERA is failing to reduce fuel price and ZESA is busy neload shedding. Roads are full of potholes while ZINARA is collecting toll fees. I am sure you all don’t want me to talk about ZRP and ZNA coz maSysterm acho munoaziva they are the ones who beat up people for peacefully demonstrating and taking bribes pamaroads. ZINWA worse, they are charging people exorbitant charges for water they dodn’t drink, nxaaa, that’s nonsense. Last but not least is Zimlie, sorry ZimEye, mmm vakomana vanonyepa zvavo vaya kkkkk.
I am calling for the responsible authorities to disband or ban anything with Z for Zimbabwe. All the organisations are a shame. Please please our president we beg you, can you do this last thing as your last kicks of a dying horse kkkk.
Ko what is this nonsense I hear, these 4ED things are becoming too much, what does ED really stands for? Is it Economic destruction, its Erectile Dysfunction or Energy Drink? Gutu hosts provincial anti-stock theft campaign launch

Precila Takabvirakare

Gutu district hosted the provincial launch of 2022 anti-stock theft campaign at Mushayavanhu Secondary School on October 12 in ward 35 under Chief Nyamandi.
The campaign was moving under the theme ‘National herd, our herd- livestock: our wealth is our concern’.
It aimed to create collaboration between farmers, government stakeholders and the police to fight against stock theft.
Speaking at the event, Officer Commanding Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Masvingo Province Commissioner David Mahoya said the province has recorded several cases of stock theft which is very worrisome so they are looking forward to collaboration between famers, government stakeholders and the police in fighting it.
“We decided to have this event today because we are really worried with number of stock theft cases that Masvingo province has recorded so far. Those people are very smart, they target specific households who they know have a lot livestock and to us it shows that those people have strong connections with some of the members of the community. So I encourage you to give us information on those people who are doing that because I know that you know them, do not hesitate to call us,” said Mahoya.
Giving statistical evidence, Commissioner Mahoya said cases which involve all livestock stolen this year are 528 as compared to 331 as of last year which shows 60% a sharp increase.
“As for stolen cattle specifically this year, the province recorded 202 cases and last year recorded 264 cases.
“Also this year, a total number of 69 accused persons were arrested as compared to last year where 68 people were arrested.
“The current figures are too high. Cattle is our economic backbone as Zimbabweans so we have to safeguard them very well We have an anti- stock theft unit in the district, work with them and give them tip offs if you have any information about stock theft don’t hesitate to call us we will respond,” he added.
He also gave a warning to those police officers who have a tendency of clearing cattle in their offices without visiting the sites to stop that manner and do the proper clearance as they are expected to do.
He concluded by encouraging the community to have brand names for their cattle for easy identification in case anything happens and the police get hold of them.

Uproar as ‘Chiredzi Titans’ fall on CC elections

…As Musikavanhu gives Moyo a torrid time

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI-The battle to the 2023 harmonized elections seems to have gathered momentum in Zanu PF’s camp here in the Lowveld as former Chiredzi Town Council chairperson Francis Moyo’s alleged faction was heavily defeated by Chiredzi West legislator Farai Musikavanhu’s faction during the just ended Central Committee elections held last weekend.
The elections reminisced a rehearsal to the 2023 Zanu PF party primary elections where presumably similar faces would present themselves as candidates.
There were ululations of joy after the announcement of the Central Committee election results at Chiredzi Town Council Civic centre after the underestimated ‘Team Chitova’ grabbed all three seats leaving ‘Team Zvazara’ with nothing to take home.
The election was a litmus test for the two factions, one led by Zanu PF Masvingo provincial chairperson Robson Mavhenyengwa while the other allegedly led by Masvingo Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira came out victorious during the just ended elections.
The elections, which were presided over by Retired Colonel Mateta from Bikita saw Chiredzi West Member of Parliament Farai Musikavanhu emerged victorious against Chiredzi South Member of Parliament, Retired Brigadier General Kalisto Gwanetsa in the third group with 171 votes against 111.
In group 2, Chiredzi East Member of Parliament Denford Masiya was also white washed by the little known Petros Chivhinga who got 169 votes against Masiya’s 109 while another contender, Smart Klemo only got three plus his own vote to make them four.
The leading basket, group one was led by Chiredzi East’s Abraham Sithole, who won with a margin of 63 votes after recording 164 votes against Mamvura Tarisai who was trailing with 101 votes. Kingsley Kanda, a war veteran who migrated from Chiredzi East to Chiredzi West also recorded a single digit figure with seven votes plus his vote to make them eight.
The central committee results have left Mavhenyengwa faction in an uncertain state as sources say they are not certain of their political future in 2023, with Chiredzi North Member of Parliament Roy Bhila allegedly having sleepless nights as South African based businessman one Mubhoyi is allegedly threatening to wrestle the seat from him.

FOC donates reading lamps to Domborembavha High School

Precila Takabvirakare

GUTU- For our Children (FOC) organization donated solar lantern reading lamps at Domborembavha High School last week with about 55 school girls benefiting from the gesture.
The founder and director of the organization Sissy Chinhamo said the programme aims to empower girls to value education so that they excel mostly in science subjects.
“We came up with the idea of donating these reading lamps to girls specifically because we want to empower them so that they have passion in education especially in science subjects. We have a lot of school dropouts here in rural areas due to child marriages and that is worrisome, so we thought giving them help in form of reading lamps will motivate them to remain focused,” said Chinhamo.
She also said FOC is going to give them reading modules, written by members of their organization, in Biology, Mathematics Chemistry and Physics end of October
FOC also intends to donate bicycles early next year to learners so that they can do away with the traveling worries over the long distances to and from school.
“We are also going to provide reading material in science subjects to help the learners. Our organization will also donate bicycles to the girls so that instead of worrying about travelling long distances to and from school, they can focus on their studies,” she added.
Domborembavha school head Edward Mashiri said he appreciates the support they received from the organization and encouraged students to work hard.
“We appreciate the support that we received from FOC, you are being empowered, grab the opportunity and do something better so that you can be someone in life. Those who are helping you are doing it whole heartedly, so value that,” he said.
He also added that sending a girl child to school is a greatest thing any parent can do, so learners should take the opportunity and fulfil their dreams.
FOC is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) born out of realization that the economic conditions in the country are increasingly becoming difficult for some families and the need to provide adequate essentials for their children saw it necessary to chip in.

Rural areas top mortality, orphanhood – ZimStats

Beverly Bizeki

Preliminary results for the 2022 population and housing census have revealed that rural areas in Zimbabwe top the mortality rates with a low life expectancy rate as compared to urban areas.
In a preliminary report released by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat), 121 078 deaths were recorded over the 12 months preceding to the census.
“A total of 121 078 deaths were reported in the last 12 months preceding the census. Crude death rate was 8 deaths per 1 000 population,” read part of the report.
Matabeleland South recorded the highest average death rate at 9.7 deaths per 1000 population.
Only 41.4 percent of the deaths were registered whilst 34.8 percent were registered in rural areas and 56.5 percent were registered in urban areas.
The national life expectancy stands at 64.7 years with females having a higher life expectancy of 68 years compared to males who have a life expectancy of 61.2 years.
Generally the life expectancy in urban areas is higher than in rural areas standing at 65.5 years and 63.3 years respectively.
The report also showed that the neonatal rate stands at 9.5 deaths per 1 000 live births whilst post neonatal rate stands at 14.7 per 1 000 live births with rural areas having higher rates of neonatal, post neonatal and infant child and under 5 mortality deaths.
1589 maternal deaths were recorded in the report.
“A total of 1 589 maternal deaths were reported against 437 478 live births giving a national Martenal Mortality Ratio (MMR) of 363 deaths per 100 000 live births. MMR was higher in rural areas (402 deaths per 100 000 live births) than in urban areas with 298 per 100 000 live births),” added part of the report.
The report further shows that the lifetime risk of maternal mortality is 14.6 deaths per 1 000 women of child bearing age and is higher in rural areas.
Lifetime risk of maternal mortality was higher in rural areas standing at 18.6 women per 1000 as compared to the urban risk of 9.8 women per 1000,” read part of the report.
The report also shows that 7.7 percent of children below 17 years are orphans with prevalence higher in rural areas at 8.4 percent as compared to 6.3 percent in urban areas.

Police in Kwekwe are investigating a case of sudden death where the body of a 51 year-old man was found hanging from a tree in a bush.
The incident occurred at Forestville farm in Kwekwe Rural on October 6, 2022 around 0900 hours.
It is said that Leonard Chinembiri of Forestville Farm left his homestead wearing a white garment as if he was going for prayers.
On the same day at around 1000 hours Patrick, Zisengwe of the same area was herding cattle at a nearby bush when he saw the body of Chinembiri hanging from a Msasa tree with his neck tied with wire.
It is suspected that Chinembiri committed suicide.
The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene and body of the deceased was ferried Kwekwe General Hospital awaiting post-mortem.
Midlands Provincial Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said investigations are still in progress.
“Police are appealing to members of the public to consider sharing their problems with a trusted friend or relative or make use of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Community Relations Liaison Offices located at every police station for assistance rather than taking own life,” he said.

Zimbabwe too far from DWA -ZCTU

0

Emmanuel Chitsika

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) President Florence Taruvinga has said Zimbabwe is far from realizing the Decent Work Agenda (DWA) though the initiative was launched nine years ago.
In a speech read on her behalf last weekend by the national executive member of Zimbabwe Hotel and Catering Workers Union Netsai Matumbike at the ZCTU Southern region boardroom in Masvingo, Taruvinga said Zimbabwe is a long way from attaining the DWA set goals.
“The ZCTU has with conviction noted that the country is still far from attaining meaningful gains in the DWA. We have also realized that policies implemented by government have failed to respond sufficiently to the needs and dictates of decent work.
“Workers in Zimbabwe face the following high unemployment, poor quality and unproductive jobs, unsafe work, insecure income catalysed by the decimation of workers’ rights. Government and employers gained much ground, implemented measures against attainment of decent work while the labour movement was immobilized.
“Generally most workers are experiencing serious decent work deficits. Meagre wages, wage theft and precarious work are prevalent even in informal employment. Modern day slavery is over-pronounced at Chinese-owned companies which enjoy protection from government. How can we achieve DWA if our own government is guilty of protecting the major perpetrators of workers’ abuse?” said Taruvinga.
She went on to say achieving a decent wage on part of Zimbabwean workers is a major challenge.
“The World Day for Decent Work 2022 theme of ‘wage justice’ is an apt challenge to us. Our wages are very low and inadequate but we will continue to call for a Poverty Datum Line linked minimum wage as our starting point.
“The demands and issues that we raised over the years have not changed because our situation is not showing any signs of improvement, rather it’s getting worse.
“As part of 2022 commemorations, we highlight the following: advocating for amendment of repressive and draconian laws, evaluation and auditing of decent work achievements, dissemination of DWA information, campaign for labour law reform and gender equality as well as ratification of International Labour Organization (ILO) convention 190,” added Taruvinga.
She said the agenda can be achieved if all social partners namely government, business and labour.
Government and labour have been at logger heads as the latter feels the former is doing nothing to correct the situation in the country facing most if not all workers.

MEN’S MENTAL HEALTH

0

Voice Rossana Mutema

Men don’t seek help for mental health related issues, a development that has seen a number of cases of mental health problems being more prevalent in men as compared to their female counterparts. Many believe that men usually do not seek help as they are believed to be strong and are afraid to be seen as less masculine.
Societies which are mainly patriarchal teach boys to be strong and “be as man” even when going through an emotional overload. This has a bearing on how they handle any form of pressure as they would want to appear strong when they have to look for help.
Men also don’t want to be a burden to others and this result in them not sharing their problems. They do not want to share their feelings with family members or friends and this cause social isolation, exacerbates relationship difficulties and worsen feelings of depression and in worst scenarios, they commit suicide. Researches have shown that men commit suicide more than women while the number of attempted suicide cases are more in women than men.
Mental health affect all genders, but it is often overlooked in men and research on men’s mental health is given less priority. Men tend not to get attention because they usually don’t want to open up if something is troubling them be it depression, social anxiety and mental disorders.
Toxic illusion of masculine self and self-reliance lead to high levels of stress and poor mental health. This makes them find it difficult to be honest with loved ones and more importantly themselves. Societies judge men who talk about their mental health problems as weak and are often not taken seriously. Because of this, a number of men may find it difficult to speak about mental health and are reluctant to seek treatment to manage symptoms.
Despite the fact that men do not share their mental health struggles people around them are at the receiving end. Men with mental health problems are more likely to take alcohol and drugs to cope with their depression rather than talking about it. Some become more insensitive, get irritated fast, increased loss of control, risk-taking and aggression. To them ‘everyone around is the problem’. Some use the escapist behaviors, since they are oriented that a man should control his feelings and real men don’t ask for help they deal with it.
A lot needs to be done for boys and men who need to be taught to talk, share their problems and allow others to help them. They need to be taught that they too have feelings they must cry and be emotional, ignoring how they feel does not make the situation better. They need to be taught that being emotional is normal, everyone feels it and sharing is not a sign of weakness. Men should know that sharing and seeking for help is actually a sign of strength. Other issues of mental health just need us to open up and seek the necessary help needed.
Society is another port of call to address mental health problems. It needs to be made aware of how important mental health is a cancerous problem that knows no gender or social class. Society also needs to be made aware that the mentality that the word ‘man’’ implies strength, power and assertiveness is wrong. It implies that men are not supposed to have mental health problems. For years, men have been told that it is not appropriate to talk about their feelings.
They have had limits placed on what is okay and what is not, to talk about. A lot of suicides committed by men are a result of these stigmas that surround their mental health. It shows how many men suffer in silence and ends it with these self-inflicted deaths.
The vastness of responsibilities on men’s shoulders and what’s expected is too much and yet no one cares how they feel or check if they are. Things happen in life like difficulties with work or finances, breakdown of relationships, overwhelming family responsibilities or a significant setback. These challenges can take a serious toll on one’s mental health. The only option will be to talk it out. You will even notice more signs of poor mental health like hopeless or worthless and behaviors that usually destroy relationships, drinking more than usual and also isolating from family and friends.
However, establishing and maintaining relationships, talking about the hard stuff in life and taking action when times are tough and proven ways for men to stay mentally healthy and cope with the stress of everyday life. Good overall health and wellbeing is linked to not only better mental health but also reduce the likelihood of suicides. If people around all men are there for them when it gets overwhelming, they can share and seek the needed help with support of friends and family.
If you know someone who is emotionally distressed or in crisis, the first step is to talk to him. Begin a conversation with a friend, family member or a health professional. Talking, listening and being there for someone going through tough times can be lifesaving. Always check in if you know someone who is going through a difficult time. Ask if they are doing okay and be prepared to listen. It is important for us to check in on our loved ones, if we can’t help we can always seek help for them. Untreated mental health conditions breed suicide. The distress a man experiences at these times affects the mental being of a person so it becomes harder for one to see possible solutions to problems, or connect with those who can offer support.
Society must be made aware of the importance of men’s mental health. The way they feel should matter therefore, they should be encouraged to open up and seek help. Once the community accept and understand more about mental health it becomes easier for people to understand. Men’s mental health is equally important as women’s. Everyone needs love and support to get past life situations. Seeking and giving help should be done equally therefore people must put efforts together and change the narrative. A problem shared is a problem half solved. Let’s make the world a better place and get the conversation started to ensure that men’s mental health is treated with the importance it deserves.
