Bad roads or bad drivers?

0

…who is to blame for carnage on the roads?

Clayton Shereni

The high number of accidents which have been recorded on Zimbabwean roads in the past few months has alarmed citizens and the country’s safe roads advocacy but the question still remains whether to blame the dilapidated roads or the negligent, half-baked drivers.
The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) has taken the lead in the campaign against neg-ligent driving by embarking on an extensive awareness campaign this year.
The number of road accidents has, however, continued to rise with many of them being fatal.
The November 7, 2018, Rusape bus disaster involving Smart Bus Express and Bolt Cutter buses along the Harare – Mutare highway which claimed at least 47 lives could be cited as a good ex-ample of ‘bad driving gone bad’.
By local standards, the state of the Harare-Mutare highway can be described as ‘excellent’, so it can only be the drivers’ errors or something else that caused the tragedy.
Countless more fatalities have been recorded on the road since it was upgraded in 2012, perhaps more fatalities per year than over the previous when it had not been improved.
Many other accidents are happening on the ‘notorious’ Harare-Masvingo highway which motor-ists love to call ‘a death trap’ due to its narrowness, poor maintenance record and the heavy traf-fic it carries daily.
Vehicle side-swipe each other, some encroach into the wrong lane while others engage in head-on collision as they try to avoid potholes, rugged edges or even due to lack of alertness caused by many factors including fatigue and medical conditions.
Along the same Harare-Masvingo highway, one of the most tragic accidents of recent times was when two Jarax buses side-swiped near Pimbi River leaving seven dead and dozens injured on August 23.
TellZim News contacted Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) president Tafadzwa George Goliati over the topic and he expressed displeasure over the state of roads.
“Our roads are now in bad shape because quality road engineering is lacking and we thought  Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) would allocate more money to the rehabilita-tion of our roads especially the Harare-Beitbridge highway but the road has been neglected and has claimed so many lives,” said Goliati.
However, Coach and Bus Operators Association (CBOA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Alex Kautsiro thinks road carnage is not caused merely by bad roads but also reckless drivers who do not apply what they are taught.
“If we are trained drivers we are supposed to respond appropriately to the challenge of perform-ing this function. The majority of road accidents in the country stem from human error which, in the case of bad road infrastructure, would be from poor judgement.
“It would be sad day to just appropriate accidents to bad roads and not consider our reaction to these conditions as drivers,” said Kautsiro.
When asked to express his views on this topic, TSCZ spokesperson Tatenda Chinoda took special interest in the Rusape accident which he said could have been prevented if road rules had been followed.
He unapologetically blamed reckless driving and speeding as the major causes of road carnage.
“We note with a concern the many road fatalities in the month of November. Speeding is the greatest error which our drivers are committing. The Rusape accident was the most preventable road traffic crush, our drivers are not following road rules. Drivers can now be likened to Boko Haram because they are now killers,” said Chinoda, referring to the savage Islamist group perpe-trating atrocities in Nigeria.
National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi also shared his sentiments on this issue saying although the country had some roads which are bad, drivers were largely to blame.
“Most of the accidents that we have recorded show that drivers are on the wrong side. They overtake even when it is unnecessary and they are not adhering to road rules. We can partly blame bad roads but some accidents are occurring on good roads and overall, drivers are causing most of the accidents,” said Nyathi.
Another factor which cannot be left out is the issue of half-backed drivers that obtain licenses and they then drive recklessly; often speeding and not following road rules.
In June this year, the Vehicle Inspection Department (VID) fired 62 officers for corruption in-volving the issuing of certificates of competence to undeserving applicants.
Nonetheless, drastic measures have to be taken to maintain and improve the roads, stop negligent driving and end the corruption which continues to taint the VID if the country is to make any positive impact on its road traffic safety record.
There cannot be two way about it because at the moment, the road traffic safety discourse is characterised by discord as to what are the causes of the challenges being faced.

MWENEZI – Ignite Afrique, a non-governmental organisation with a focus on empowering women and girls, last week donated sanitary wear to several school girls in the district.
Pupils from 10 schools gathered at Mwenezi Government High School to receive their share from the 2 000 packs of sanitary pads.
Ignite Afrique director, Charles Maregere said his organisation’s goal was to uphold the dignity of women and girls by improving their access to opportunities.
“We felt that addressing girls’ sanitary needs for girls will produce a better generation as female pupils will be able to stay longer at school. Lack of proper sanitary wear in poor communities is a major cause for concern,” said Maregere.
Mwenezi Government High head girl, Chipo Mundanga who is also a junior councillor for Ward 5, said due to poverty and limited access to information, the girl child was the most vulnerable member of society.
“We have no access to proper sanitary wear to make our school time comfortable. Many are missing class and some are dropping out of school altogether. There are also early marriages happening because of poverty and lack of knowledge,” said Mundanga.
With the support from partners like Diesel Technics and Harare-based Turner & Townsend Ignite Afrique has managed to source school fees for four bright but disadvantaged pupils in the district.

Cell Insurance donates furniture to Gresham Primary School

Cell Insurance donated various pieces of furniture to Gresham Primary School last week
Darlington Kanyongo

ZVISHAVANE – Cell Insurance last week Thursday extended a helping hand to one of the oldest government-owned   primary schools in the mining town by donating school furniture.
The insurance company donated 100 desks and 100 chairs valued at $7 500 to Gresham Primary at the school’s prize giving day.
Cell Insurance head of operations, Maxman Mutsau who was also the guest of honour at the event, told TellZim News that the school occupied a special place in his heart as his wife is a product of it.
“After receiving an invitation from the school, I told my spouse that I was going to Zvishavane. That is when she asked me what I was going to do for her school. I remembered her sharing with me her life experience at Gresham; experiences about hot-sitting and shortages of furniture and I told myself that I will do something,” Mutsau said.
Gresham Primary School head, Getrude Matutu expressed gratitude for the generous gesture, saying the donation came when it was needed the most.
“The school has an enrolment of 1 828 pupils and the number keeps on multiplying year after year so our classrooms couldn’t support that big number. At the beginning of this year, we started building new blocks to accommodate the growing number of pupils but we did not have enough furniture.
“We therefore say thanks to Cell Insurance Company because a burden has been taken off our shoulders. We really appreciate what has been done here,” said Matutu.

Cloud of shame as bride refuses to wed pastor

                Naume Mangwarira                                 Pastor Samuel Kaunda

…wedding day turns into nightmare as bride says no…I can’t marry an abusive man

MASVINGO
The most popular
cliché, ‘kudira jecha’, normally used in political circles last weekend gained
fame in social circles when a Gweru-based apostle with Glory House Ministries
was rejected by his bride on wedding day.
Pastor Samuel Kaunda received the shock of his life
when his fiancée, Naume Mangwarira suddenly grew cold feet on wedding day and
refused to go to the wedding venue.
The circus became the shame of the year for the bride
and her groom’s parents and relatives who had gathered at Masvingo Sports Club waiting
for the duo to arrive in their convoys.
Kaunda’s parents had reportedly flown from the UK for
the wedding.
The big white marque that had been set had to be
pulled down, with people being asked to take away all the food and drinks that
had been prepared after spirited behind-the-scenes attempts to break the
deadlock failed.
Mangwarira, who resides in Mucheke and is with the
Full Gospel Church, is said to have cited physical and verbal abuse as the
major reason she had made the 11th hour decision not to marry
Kaunda.
TellZim News visited the Sports Club venue where the
wedding was supposed to take place last Saturday and saw people loitering
around while relatives of the groom sat dejectedly at their colourfully draped
tables as attempts were still being made in Mucheke to break the deadlock.
The groom showed up at the venue with his convoy but
he later disappeared from the scene after being told his bride had said no.
People who spoke to TellZim News said the apostle was
abusive with his fiancée and at some point raised his hands on her.
“The guy is known to have temperamental issues and he
often times beats her. He does not know how to keep his anger in check and he
takes it up on anyone who is close by.
“Mangwarira was patient but she finally decided she
had had enough of the abuse. She told her relatives that she could not go
through with the wedding,” said a source.
Another close source said Mangwarira made her
intentions a long time before the wedding day but church people convinced
everybody that preparations for the wedding should continue, promising they
will be able to resolve whatever differences that existed between the two.
 “She told us
that she did not want to be married anymore because the guy is abusive. We were
in disbelief because of the status of the guy. We thought that it was a minor
misunderstanding which would be resolved amicably. That is why the wedding
preparations went on as planned.
“We were however left embarrassed on wedding day when
she refused to put on the gown. She said she did not want to condemn herself to
a painful marriage,” said the source.
Another source said Kaunda had failed to be honest
with his UK-based parents, letting them spent large sums of money coming for
the wedding without appraising them on the tensions he had long noticed.
 “Kaunda should
have come clean and accepted reality. This whole shame could have been avoided
had he told his relatives the truth. A lot of money was wasted planning for
something that never came to fruition,” said the source.

Year 2019 must be more gender-sensitive, says Activista

Dorcus Chishumba
Youths
from various districts of Masvingo province last week gathered at Charles
Austin Theatre where they to deliberated on strategies that can be used to end
violence against women and children in 2019.
The
youths gathered under the banner of the Activista movement, and they
deliberated on strategies to tackle gender imbalances to create a more just
society.
The
event was part of a wider programme running under the hashtag theme YouthSolidarityPower
‘Towards Gender Just Societies’.
Many
of the participants mentioned community dialogues, workshops and awareness
campaigns as vital tools for more gender-sensitive communities.
Activista
Masvingo provincial coordinator, Moreblessing Mavhika said it was imperative
that the youth become involved in efforts to create fair opportunities for all.
“Year
2019 should be different from others in that we aim to make bigger
achievements. The onus is on us to spread awareness in the name of gender
equality and equity,” said Mavhika.
Other
participants said the gender injustice affected the ability of women and girls
to fully reach their full potential in socio-economic and political circles,
with those from Chiredzi pointing at how the distribution of sugarcane plots
had disproportionately favoured well-connected men.
Activista
is an international social movement which seeks to address challenges being
faced by youths in their respective communities.
The
movement campaigns against poverty, inequality and corruption among other
social problems in such countries as South Africa, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Gutu married teachers caught in bed of adultery

…female teacher runs naked in front of children
Clayton Shereni
GUTU – A
married Fashion and Fabrics female teacher at Chimedza Secondary School in Ward
28, Gutu district, was recently caught pants down with a fellow married male teacher
and she ran for dear life in the teachers’ compound while stark naked, TellZim
News can report.
Loveness Magadza
nee Maeka and his lover Golden Paradzai – a Geography teacher – were busted by
Paradzai’s wife in the evening of December 04 after she unexpectedly came back
home from Mpandawana growth point where she works.
Sources told
TellZim News the illicit couple often took advantage of the absence of
Paradzai’s wife to have a good time together in Paradzai’s apartment.
However, all
hell eventually broke loose at around 16:00hrs on the fateful day when
Paradzai’s wife visited her husband unexpectedly, only to find her husband
sleeping with Magadza on their matrimonial bed in the teachers’ cottage.
Paradzai’s wife
started assaulting Magadza who then managed to sneak out of the house and run
for dear life in her birthday suit.
The embarrassing
incident reportedly happened in the full glare of some pupils who had just
started leaving school at the end of the day.
Chimedza
Secondary School head, Joe Marembo said he was yet to formally submit a written
report to the District Schools Inspector (DSI).
“Yes, I heard
of the incident which allegedly happened when I was away in Mpandawana for a
workshop and I will soon write a report about it. I can’t speak anything more,”
said Marembo.
Another source
later told TellZim News the School Development Committee (SDC) had called a
meeting where a decision was made to transfer the two offending teachers from
the school.
“A meeting was
held on Thursday (December 06

) and the SDC advised the two teachers to leave the
school and find another work place starting next term. The parents said they
could no longer entrust their children with them,” said the source.

Parents are said
to have complained that the two teachers had put the name of the school to
shame and they were a bad example to school children.

Ndarama High School has added more glamour to its name by winning several awards at the Masvingo District Merit Awards for the year 2017 which were held at Better Schools Programme Zimbabwe (BSPZ) offices last week.
The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education honoured more than 20 schools for their achievements in the past year.
It was, however, Ndarama High pupils and teachers who stole the show by winning more than 40 awards in the ‘O’ and ‘A’ level categories.
The school won the Best Urban School award, Best ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level Results award in the urban day school category and the Outstanding Overall High School award among others.
Former Ndarama pupils Believe Mhanga, Jean Zulu Jean and Sharleen Chikomo walked away with $50 vouchers from BSPZ each for attaining 20 points in the 2017 examinations.
Ndarama High School head, Shirley Makausi was named Best School Head.
Speaking after receiving the prizes, Makausi said the school will continue to work hard so that the momentum does not stop.
“I am overwhelmed but for me, winning means going the extra mile. Our motto as a school is to do better than what we have done so we are going to work extra hard. I am happy with the recognition,” said Makausi.
In the primary schools category, Helen McGhie Primary was named the Outstanding School of the Year, walking away with the District Schools Inspector (DSI) shield and a $500 voucher.
Zishumbe Primary was named Best Satellite School and walked away with a floating trophy and a $500 voucher from Hillthru Enterprises director, Benjaman Mazarire.

Two mentally challenged people die on streets of Masvingo

                                                             The late Sydney Chingoma
Clayton Shereni
Two
mentally-challenged people recently died on the streets of Masvingo, one of them
reportedly after being assaulted by homeless children, TellZim News has learnt.
A woman who, for
long, had set-up camp at Kyle House along Hughes St was found dead last Sunday
morning.
The woman was
identified as Locadia Gutu but people commonly referred to her as ‘VaMagumbo’.
Some people said she had complained about severe headache and her body had
swelled massively.
Police
spokesperson Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed the death and said they were
carrying out investigations.
A week before,
Sydney Chingoma died at Masvingo Provincial Hospital where he had been rushed
reportedly after being found with a deep scar on his head.
Chingoma, who
was commonly known as ‘Tsano’, had for many years slept on the pavement close
to Zuva Kyle fuel station but management there recently chased him away
reportedly because he was ‘making a mess of the place’.
After being
evicted from the place, he is said to have went to a another place close to
Pick n Pay where he reportedly clashed with street kids there who then beat him
up.
When TellZim
News asked Mazula if the police were investigating a murder case, she said she
had not even received the report of the now almost three-weeks-old incident.
Authorities in
Masvingo have been blamed for turning a blind eye on homeless mentally challenged
people.

Ratidzo Primary School sets-up traffic centre

Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Ratidzo Primary recently received five bicycles from the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) to thank the school for installing a traffic centre which helps children to avoid road traffic accidents.
Addressing parents and children at the school, TSCZ Masvingo regional manager Georgina Mateta said it was the mandate of everybody to make the roads safer.
She said her organisation encouraged schools to build similar facilities; adding that 94 percent of road accidents were caused by human error (drivers, cyclists and pedestrians), five percent by defectives and one percent by bad road conditions.
“We are teaching these children the highway code because we want to catch them young so that we minimise traffic accidents involving them. We gave Ratidzo Primary School ideas as the new curriculum calls for traffic centres in schools.
“We donated five bicycles to them to appreciate their efforts towards this goal. The programme of traffic centres had died a natural death as it was only meant for A schools, for example in Masvingo province it was found at Victoria Primary, in Gweru at Cecil John Rhodes Primary, in Harare at Mt Pleasant and in Bulawayo at Congo Park,” said Mateta.
Tsungai Gono, an ECD teacher at Ratidzo Primary and a Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Master’s student, is the brain behind the traffic centre.
“I took the idea because my Master’s degree requires me to come up with a tangible project to help children in the community I live. I then looked around for suggestions from various stakeholders and implemented the idea. The centre has already helped more than 38 people who were about to write their provisional driver’s licences this week,” said Gono.

Of shameless Jorum Gumbo and his ‘Zim has enough fuel’ mantra

Mapombi now understands why
things are not going on well in some of these government offices; it’s because
they are manned by incompetent officials, and one such example is Machako – a
director in the office of our good Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial
Affairs. They guy is very incompetent; Mapombi can confidently tell you guys.
In fact his red eyes made Mapombi suspect kuti ndoumwe wevamwe vanoenda kubasa
vakarohwa nembanje chete.
Mapombi heard her bosses
complaining about this pint-sized guy saying he knows nothing; ndokuzonzwazve
nemamwe maCdes in the media industry crying over Mchako’s conduct. His latest
blundering was when minister Chadzamira recently delivered a press statement on
the preparations for the national clean-up campaign which was scheduled for
yesterday. Guess what Machako did – he barred journalists from asking questions
or seeking clarity. Kkkkkk the guy is not so intelligent I tell you and I don’t
know why he is a director in that office when he misdirects the minister like
that. What was the purpose of inviting the media in the first place when he
knew that he would not allow any questions or requests for clarifications? I am
sure Machako was desperate to cover up fearing that his boss would be asked
tough questions as we all know that there is very little to write home about
Zanu PF since they controversially won the elections this year. In fact they
did not win the elections but they were declared winners by the Malaba-led
bench – with how many votes – only God knows.
Mapombi will not waste much time
talking about this useless Machako pamwe anenge akatorohwa zvake nembanje
because makambomuonepi munhu wekuti chero na7am maziso anenge atotsvuka kuti
piriviri. But tsika yako uirege iwe chimudhara chipfupi – why can’t you allow vana
Irimayi avo who work with the media every day to run the show? Kuda kunzi mungona
here nhai kkkkkkkkkkk nhamo.
Anyway, last week mother Zimbabwe
was in the province – I mean the First Lady. Yes; she is the first lady and
Mapombi has no doubt about that; zveavo vanoda kuwanza mashoko kuti heee she
was small-house what what ini handizvizive izvozvo. All I know is she is the
First Lady.
But can someone tell me; is it a
pre-requisite that our First Ladies vanofanira kungozhangandira or it’s just a
bad precedence which was left by our learned former First Lady? Or is it in
style for a First Lady kuti angoita speed imwe iya iya? I am serious ndoda
kutozivawo.
Can you imagine our First Lady
spent the whole day at Helen McGhie Primary School doing nothing but kugara
zvavo vachiita ngano kuvana vechikoro…. The whole day ngano dzichitsva apa Dead
BC camera ichitora mashura iwayo. And guess what; Auxillia was among the top
stories achiita ngano pachikoro ipapo paHelen McGhie hahahaha kumwa kuda camera
kwacho munozokunyanya Amai. I felt sorry for Chadzamira who was made to sit
down parukukwe ngano dzichitsva kkkkkkkk imagine the whole day murume mukuru
akati tekeshe parukukwe kkkkkkk.
But for those who care to
remember they will agree with Mapombi that this is how our former First Lady
started achingobuda ariko kuDanhiko every day isu vana Mapombi tikazvireva kuti
mukadzi ava kuenderera uyo vanhu veZanu vakatiitisa nharo.
People are starving and the
economic crisis is getting worse every day but a whole First Lady kutouya hake
kuzoswerotamba achiita ngano wasting government resources like that. All those
CIOs and government officials being paid for nothing. We want a mother who is
reasonable – who can address bread and butter issues not wasting resources
kuuya kuzoita ngano kuno. Hamunyare makaita seiko?
I think ED, his wife and
government yake are just clueless. They don’t know anything about solving the
economic crisis. In fact, that guy called Mthuli hahahahahaha mutuvi chaiwo
uya. For those who know mutuvi they will totally agree with me.
Mapombi is always a gentleman so
ndinofira kureva zvangu. The challenge that we have is that ED and his comrades
are capitalists and the challenge with capitalists they only think about how
they can fatten their pockets and nothing else. Mutuvi’s policies are clear for
anyone to notice that tiri kutongwa nemaCapitalists.
Capitalists don’t have people at
heart – all they want is to make profit; and for that reason a two percent tax
was imposed on innocent citizens so that vanoita mari havo. Mthuli has imposed
a number of policies which will negatively affect citizens again so that they
can make money – that is exactly the behavior of capitalists. But one thing that
Mapombi knows is chisingapere chinoshura; who imagined Mugabe would go that
way?
But mukati murume unonzi Jorum
Gumbo dzakanyatsoti kwesere? This is a genuine question guys because Mapombi is
really confused and does not understand this not-so-intelligent minister. Gumbo
has been on record saying Zim has enough fuel but many citizens are asking saka
iri kupi fuel yacho if we have enough?
We see long winding queues in
town every day but a whole minister thinks he can fool the nation by lying that
we have enough fuel. Kkkkk Mr Minister wake up; we do not have enough fuel in
Zim please. Stop lying! Maybe you want to portray to the international
community an all-is-well smokescreen in Zimbabwe. Of course all is well in
Zimbabwe but we do not have enough fuel.
I think corruption inovhiringidza
urozvi chete ini. I now strongly believe that because some of the things that
are said by these corrupt government officials unotosara uchizvibvunza kuti
baba ava dzakakwakana here.
Anyway, it’s almost lunch time
let me go ndindokanga zvangu maputi angu for lunch. I don’t want to imagine
what I will eat on Christmas Day and New Year. At least I will manage to have
maputi angu hangu and of course rotten bananas. Mapombi strongly believes that
things could have been different if Mphoko was still the Vice President because
by now all women would have received day-old chicks and incubators tichitoziva
kuti paholiday tichadya nyama yehuku. With these VPs we now have ummm only God
knows. Mboko imboko!
