A caretaker at Danda Secondary School in Zaka surprised his community after he chased his wife and three children from home and took in a prostitute who had followed him to his house and refused to leave.
Jabson Museza (38) of Banga village, chief Ndanga in Zaka, chased Sibongile Muvhinyingwa, his wife for seven years, and their three children aged five, three and four months old from their matrimonial home.
This was after a sex-worker he had known for some time decided to follow him to his place saying she was tired of being used by him and it was high time she became his wife.
“I am hurt and do not understand why he did this to me after seven years of marriage. I knew that he was sleeping around because he would not come back home after every pay day.
“One day, he came back after three days with a woman in tow. The woman followed him into our hut and sat on the bed beside my husband. I asked what was going on and he told me that he had decided to marry this woman and that I was supposed to leave.
“We quarrelled and he started throwing my clothes out of the house telling me to leave the children, pots and blankets for his new wife,” said Muvhinyingwa.
“I could not leave my children because they are still young. Before I met him, he had chased three other women so when I visited his sister in Mushayavanhu for help to solve this, she told me to leave her alone saying she was tired of her brother’s issues,” added Muvhinyingwa.
Muvhinyingwa and her children are now staying in Bikita with her uncles and waiting for the processing of her maintenance claims.news

Masvingo man in court for faking son’s death

Itai Muzondo

A deceitful Masvingo man ran out of luck after he was nabbed for faking his son’s death in a bid to defraud First Mutual Funeral Policy of over $1 500.
Godfrey Kutadza (47) of Mazarira Village, Chief Chikwanda appeared in court last Friday and has since been charged for fraud.
He pleaded guilty to accusations of faking his 18-year old son Shepherd Kutadza’s death in order to claim funeral assistance from the bereavement policy.
In mitigation, Kutadza, a general hand at Victoria Junior Primary School told the court that he had pressing financial challenges that forced him to commit the offence in the hope of getting some money from First Mutual Funeral Policy.
It is the State’s case that on 25 February 2016 Kutadza went to First Mutual Funeral Policy, represented by Simon Makwavaya and made a funeral cash request for the his son, Shepherd.
He then produced a Burial Order Number 86/16 to support his claim.
The attempted fraud was, however, scuttled after the funeral policy company made enquiries with Kutadza’s village head, Joseph Gundura who revealed that Kutadza had lied about his son’s death.
Masvingo Magistrate Langton Ndokera remanded Kutadza out of custody to the Wednesday, April 20 for sentencing.news

Council allocates stands to councillors

Councillors in Gutu district are set to benefit from a Council-initiated scheme which will see them being allocated stands that will be paid for from as little as US$50 a month.
Council resolved to allocate stands to sitting councillors who will be expected to pay a minimum of $50 from their monthly allowances to foot the cost of the stands.
Meanwhile, councillors have agreed the stands must be serviced before allocation to ensure that in the event of death of beneficiaries, the deceased’s family can continue with developments.
Some of the councillors are however worried that in the event that they are voted out of office in the 2018, they would lose their newly acquired properties.
Assurances have been given on security of ownership for those who maintain a consistent payment record.
The councillors were also told monthly instalments for the stands depend on the size of the stand.news

Andy Brown Jnr steals laptop in Masvingo

Memory Rasa

The famous late musician Andy Brown’s son, Andy Brown Jnr’s is on Masvingo police’s wanted list in connection with a laptop he allegedly stole from Cleopatra Mutoti, a student at Masvingo Polytechnic College.
Cleopatra is Brown’s ex-girlfriend and daughter to former Teacher-in-Charge (TIC) of Hillside Primary School, Robert Simon Mutoti.
Now the Mutotis suspect the late popular musician’s son of nicking his ex-girlfriend’s laptop during a visit in which spent one week with the family.
It is said the laptop went missing soon after Brown left.
A report has already been made  by Hildegard Mola Mutoti, Cleopatra’s mother, with the Masvingo Central Police and a docket has been opened.
Sources privy to the case say the former lovers were so much in love with each other that Cleopatra’s parents would let Brown visit and stay with them.
However, it all turned sour one day when they came back from work to find their distraught daughter saying Brown had vanished without goodbye and had taken her laptop with him.

City council appeals against labour court ruling

0

Adolf Gusha

Upenyu Chaota

City of Masvingo, which has been embroiled in a number of labour disputes, is appealing against the recent Gutu labour office ruling ordering the reinstatement or proper retrenchment of two fired council employees.
Gutu labour officer, Faith Mupangami, ruled in favour of Boniface Mazarire and Vunganai Menasseh who are fighting the termination of their contracts by Masvingo City Council.
Mupangami gave council 30 days to reinstate the two or negotiate their exit package.
The duo was dismissed on the basis of the controversial three months’ notice dismissals that shook the country last year.
When contacted for comment, Town Clerk, Adolf Gusha could only say Council was still looking into the judgment and weighing all the options available.
“We are still looking into the matter and I cannot provide you with any further details,” he said.
However, Ward 10 Councillor Lovemore Mufamba, who chaired the meeting which resolved to fire the two, said it was Council’s duty to defend the dismissals.
“As Council we resolved that Mazarire, Menasseh and Josphat Ruzengwe be fired and we tasked management to defend that decision. The judgement does not bind because we have lodged an appeal. We feel there are reasonable grounds to think the law may have been misinterpreted.
He criticised the judgement, saying he does not see why Mazarire and Menasseh’s case was treated differently when a similar case had been dismissed earlier on.
“It is the same office which dismissed a similar case by Ruzengwe. What is the difference now?” said Mufamba who added that the case had been politicised by his MDC-T counterparts who want Mazarire reinstated.
Mazarire, who is a member of the MDC-T, said he was yet to be formally notified of the appeal.
“I heard that Council is appealing but we are still waiting for formal communication from the council and my lawyers over the matter,” said Mazarire. news

You are free to pan for gold, Chipanga tells youth

0

Kudzanai Chipanga

Staff reporter

Zanu-PF National Youth Secretary, Kudzanai Chipanga has told young people in Masvingo that starting from now onwards, they were free to do gold panning without the risk of being arrested by the police.
Addressing youths who attended a meeting at Masvingo Polytechnic College to mobilise for the so-called one million men march scheduled to take place in Harare in May; Chipanga assured that nobody would be arrested for gold panning because there are no jobs.
“Starting from today no one shall be arrested for gold panning, hapana achasungirwa gold panning endai munoita gold panning yenyu freely hapana anokusungai,” (no one will arrest you, go and do your gold panning activities freely, absolutely no one will arrest you) said Chipanga.
Though government is working to regularise many unregistered artisanal miners, it is still illegal to pan for gold and miners are expected to register with the Mines and Minerals Act and pay a one per cent royalty for gold output.
Chipanga, however, urged youths to work for themselves and buy their own cars and houses and to stop using the party’s name to intimidate people.
He went on to say that party structures were supposed to be a composition of both males and females, not predominantly male as was the case.
“At district level ladies are intimidated and that is why there are no females in the district leadership. From now onwards, all vacant posts shall be given to ladies until there is gender parity.
“Stop intimidating people using T-shirts and the party’s name; some even refuse to pay bus fare simply because they are wearing Zanu-PF regalia.
He also warned ministers that they should address bread and butter issues and work for the welfare of their people, saying ministers should do something to revamp the economy in line with the mandate given to them by the president.
“We want politics to address bread and butter issues, we need politics that addresses the economy, we don’t need ministers who do nothing because makapiwa basa napresident (you were given an assignment by the president),” said Chipanga.news

We are tired of empty promises; ministers told

Angry youths who attended a youth meeting at Masvingo Polytechnic College last Thursday told Ministers and MPs that they were tired of politicians’ empty promises which are often not fulfilled.
The meeting was attended by Masvingo youth officers, ordinary youths and some legislators in the province.
Masvingo Province Youth Chairperson Nobert Ndavarombe openly told Provincial Affairs Minister Shuvai Mahofa and Walter Muzembi, who is the Tourism and Hospitality minister that they were sick and tired of being given empty promises.
“We are tired of empty promises, you promised us land, money for projects and employment but we got nothing,” said Ndavarombe
He said youths want the jobs that they were promised after the 2013 elections as well as land since most of them had families.
“Most of the youths have families and are jobless but you promised them land and jobs. I’m tired of leading people that were given empty promises,” he said amid ululations from the crowd.
He said although the youth salute their leaders, politicians must not take advantage of that to abuse them warning that if politicians continue to lie, they would not be respected any more.
‘We salute you as our leaders but that does not mean you can abuse us. Empowerment motinyima, (you deny us empowerment) land motinyima (you deny us land), maloan motinyima (you deny us loans), next time we won’t respect you.
Ndavarombe claimed some leaders were sympathetic to the Zimbabwe People First (ZPF) party and their actions were influencing the youth to turn away from President Mugabe.
“We don’t want leaders who sympathise with People First, and muri kuti zvinhu zvinenge zvabva kuHarare kuna president imi mozvibovera pakati apa muchifunga kuti tichabva pana VaMugabe, manje (You are taking everything that the president would have given us thinking we will turn against him) but this time you won’t suppress our voices.
He warned youth officers whom he said were joining ZPF that he had their names and will expose them when the need arises.
Zanu-PF National Youth Secretary Kudzanai Chipanga told the youths that they should make follow-ups to get what they are promised and urged Masvingo youths to join the one million men march set for May this year.news

ZANU PF factional fights scaring tourists: Mzembi

0

Upenyu Chaota

The minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Engineer Walter Mzembi has said the coverage of Zanu-PF factional wars by the media is scaring away tourists by magnifying the situation out of proportion.
Delivering a public lecture on China-Zimbabwe relations at Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) last week, Mzembi said China is a force to reckon with in global tourism but they are very cautious about their security.
“Negative publicity and issues to do with health discourage Chinese travellers from visiting African destinations. They are so security-conscious that even the little acrimonies reported from small places like Masvingo will discourage them from coming.
“Even factional politics discourage them because the way it’s captured in our media communicates conflict when in fact there is none. We need to package and create a Zimbabwe brand that communicates exactly what is happening on the ground; the peace and stability that obtain in our country,” said Mzembi.
He added that Zimbabwe still has a lot to do to create a tourist-friendly environment, chief of which is to improve the transport network.
He blamed the poor transport network for harming the tourism potential of Great Zimbabwe.
“Zimbabwe needs to improve its transport network system so as to lure tourists to visit areas like Great Zimbabwe monuments. If Chinese tourists arrive at Harare International Airport, they cannot contemplate a four-hour long road journey to Masvingo; that is why they do not come.
“We need to rehabilitate the Masvingo airport so that it can accommodate big planes so tourists can be visit Great Zimbabwe,” said Mzembi without explaining what he will do to achieve that.
Mzembi presented the public lecture together with his Rural Development, Preservation and Promotion of National Culture and Heritage counterpart, Abednico Ncube who failed to read his speech for unknown reasons and could not answer questions from the speech which was read on his behalf.news

Government has no money for Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims – Mahofa

0
Upenyu Chaota
Three years after the tragic Tokwe-Mukosi floods disaster, government is yet to fully compensate the victims some of whom were forcefully moved to Chingwizi, with Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Shuvai Mahofa making it clear the government has not yet raised any money for them.
Shuvai Mahofa
By August last year, the government’s obligations to the Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims stood at US$8 million dollars and nothing has been done to pay it off.
“As you know, the government does not have money at present. We are struggling to pay bonuses to civil servants and, as you may know, no budget has been put in place for the Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims.
“Over the past months, we have been reducing the debt and paying some families but there is still a long way to go.
“We are doing this slowly and if the funds are made available to us, we will go ahead and pay the remaining families,” said Mahofa.
Mahofa said she had plans for a second relocation for the Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims but because of financial constraints, nothing has materialised yet.
She said the relocation was necessary to enable the families to get more space to build permanent structures and for them to produce enough food for themselves since the government was also struggling to feed them and their families.
“We wanted to initiate a second relocation for the flood victims from the Nuanetsi Ranch to seven farms that have been identified for them in Mwenezi district but because resources would not permit, the plan did not work,” Mahofa said.
Had the plan worked, each of the 3 000 affected families would have been allocated six hectares of land.
Farms earmarked for the relocation include Mutirikwi, Lundi, Magudu, Javarirai and Umfulo and are strategically located near the perennially flowing Mutirikwi and Runde rivers.

Hunger stalks Chivi

0

Upenyu Chaota
Many households in the drought-hit Masvingo province face starvation with the situation in Chivi district getting to extremes as many now afford only one meal a day, Chivi Central legislator Ephraim Gwanongodza has said.
Ephraim Gwanongodza
Gwanongodza confirmed that food shortages have become serious in Chivi and there is a lot of work that government and civic society need to do to make sure people do not starve.
“The hunger situation in Chivi has worsened and many households are doing with only one meal a day. As public representatives we try to chip in and help with all that we can but completely eliminating hunger is a mammoth task which needs the collective efforts of both the government and the donors.
“Masvingo did not receive normal rains this season and is the hardest-hit region as the drought has completely wiped out crops and decimated livestock. The government has availed maize here in Chivi and it has gone some way in feeding the population but more food aid is needed.
“We have since engaged maize dealers to come and sell their maize at affordable prices here,” said Gwanongodza.
Gwanongodza called on people to make full use of their gardens and grow cash crops so that they can make some cash and complement the government’s efforts.
“If people can get some money from other activities, they can buy some maize and complement our efforts. We know we can never provide adequate food for every household but we need to complement each other where possible.
“There are some rains being received of late and I urge people to make full use of their gardens and grow cash crops and be able to generate some cash to help sustain their families,” Gwanongodza said.
He said the government is doing everything it can to make sure that no one will die from hunger.
