Croc chases grade two pupil for 2km

ZAKA -A seven year-old child from Zaka ran for dear life for about 2km with a giant crocodile in pursuit before villagers rescued him by killing the reptile before a local police neighbourhood watch ferried it to Zibwowa Primary School where it was locked in a room for two days.
Business came to a halt at Zibwowa Primary School last week as pupils and teachers partially suspended their lessons to get a glimpse of the dead reptile.
Masvingo police provincial acting spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhehwa could neither confirm nor deny the incident as he insisted that he was still verifying facts.
Teachers from Zibwowa who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the development and said the reptile was brought to the school by a local police neibhourhood watch.

 “The crocodile was killed in Chiromo area near Murerezi river. We were told that the reptile chased a child from the river for about 3km. The child screamed for help and the villagers came to his rescue and killed the crocodile before a local neighbourhood watch ferried it to this school where he asked for a room to keep the reptile while he contact the police at Zaka. He later said he was instructed to bury other parts of the crocodile except for the head which he took to the police station,” said one of the teachers.
Teachers and pupils however, enjoyed a lifetime opportunity to have photo sessions with the crocodile.
Efforts to get comment from the National Parks and Wildlife Management were fruitless by the time of going to the press.

Mavhaire says Mugabe did not kill even a bird during war

Firebrand politician and probably the most senior member among the sacked Zanu-PF cadres in Masvingo,  Dzikamai Mavhaire,  of  the Mugabe must go fame opened up recently and discredited his former boss President Robert Mugabe saying he never killed even a bird during the liberation war.
Mavhaire who has been in and out of government since 1980 due to his sharp tongue said he was no longer interested in going back to the revolutionary party describing the President as a man who shunned advice until he became useless to both the party and the country.
Although Mavhaire was very vocal in denouncing President Mugabe openly, he said it was not him alone who wanted Mugabe to rest while he was still commanding some respect from the people of Zimbabwe.

“It was not myself alone…a lot of people wanted the President to retire then. It is only that I had the courage to say it in parliament in 1998 and they perceived me as an enemy and I was fired from the government.
“I bet you that had he (Mugabe) cared to listen to my advice in 1998, today that man was going to be a small god on earth …look now rangova bepa (he is just a paper),” said Mavhaire.
Asked whether he harbours ambitions to bounce back into the government as was the norm in previous times, Mavhaire said he was already fed up.
“No no I will not go back, enough is enough. I was with them for 35 years and I think we have parted ways for good,” said Mavhaire.
Although he was not clear on the exact political path he was following, Mavhaire said no one will take away the fact that he went to war and fought for the liberation of the country.
Turning to people who believe that it is often cold outside Zanu PF, Mavhaire said it is only those who have never been out who think that life outside Zanu PF is difficult.
“Ask all those who are out…they are happy with their lives. I am satisfied outside than inside. It is warm here and very cold inside. I have since gained weight,” added Mavhaire.
Mavhaire said under normal circumstances, political life should be very short. People must have the habit of joining politics and pass on the button so that others can take over.
“We should not be concentrating on active political life without ending. Political life should come to an end so that we do other business… the major problem that we have is that we have politicians who do not have any skill or some kind of expertise hence these people fight to hang onto political positions for life.
“We should thrive to have politicians who add value to the country…we should discourage a situation where people campaign to be get political posts in order to earn a living,” added Mavhaire.

Prominent Chiredzi businessman Simbarashe Chikonzo is constructing a mega shopping mall just across Zuva Service Station at Tshovani township.
The shopping mall, Chikonzo said, will comprise a supermarket, hardware and stalls.
Cikonzo who owns Chlosteel hardware in Chiredzi said the construction which started in July this year is expected to be complete early next year.
“The shopping mall is a two storey; we will have various outlets ranging from hardware, supermarkets and clothing shops on the ground floor while the first floor will be used for offices. There will be 16 offices. We started construction in July this year and we expect to complete before year end. If all goes well the mall will open its doors to the people early next year,” said Chikonzo.


The 41-year-old businessman however could not be drawn into disclosing the total cost of the mega mall but a rough estimate indicated that Chikonzo invested over $380 000 on the project so far.
“I have so far used over $380 000 on this project and it is difficult to estimate how much is needed to complete the mall. We are now into final touches and we hope that will not gobble much,” Chikonzo said.
Chikonzo has managed to construct a number of shops in Chiredzi town over the past few years.

CHIVI – The assistant District Administrator for Chivi, Wafios Hlavati, has come under fire from the main opposition, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T), calling for his immediate resignation from the public office since he is now ZANU-PF Chivi district ward 30 chairperson.
Hlavati could not immediately respond to the questions from TellZim News last week as he remained mum for a while before saying that everyone is involved in politics in one way or another.
After being quizzed on whether it was proper for him to occupy Zanu-PF top post in his ward, Hlavati was quick to say that people were out to tarnish his image. He further suggested that it was not bad for a public officer to occupy a political position since Zanu-PF was the sole ruling party.
“Are we in inclusive government? Everyone is involved in politics… aah but no I am not the chairperson here. Zanu-PF ward 30 chairperson is one Knowledge Mashandu not me,” said Hlavati.
However, TellZim News is reliably informed that Mashandu is the vice chairperson and Hlavati is ward 30 Zanu-PF chairperson. This is not the first time that Hlavati has assumed a political post.
Reliable sources who attended the district elections in Chivi recently said Hlavati was very excited when he won the elections.
MDC-T national spokesperson, Obert Gutu said the situation in Chivi is unconstitutional and Hlavati must either resign from public office or relinquish his ZANU-PF post.

“The situation in Chivi is unconstitutional. As MDC we condemn that and we call for the resignation of Hlavati. The constitution makes it clear that a civil servant must not hold a political post because there will be a clash of interests.
“Hlavati is a senior civil servant and we do not expect him to hold any political post hence he should choose whether to be a public servant or a politician, not both,” said Gutu.
He added that ZANU-PF should not violate the constitution hence the MDC-T will fight for its implementation.
”ZANU-PF has a tendency of stepping over the constitution. We want it to be implemented religiously. Imagine one is a judge and they hold political positions, how will they be able to deliver without being biased? , ” asked Gutu.

 In a social responsibility move, the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ)-run Gutu High School recently donated a borehole to Makore village in Gutu, cementing the good relations between the school and the community.
Addressing people gathered to witness the handover  ceremony, Chief Gutu, Amon Edmond Masanganise said he is proud to have partners with a development focus.

“I am proud to be associated with people who are focused in developing my area for the benefit of the people around. This indeed fulfils the principle which says develop yourself first and you will know how to help on development issues elsewhere,” said Masanganise.
“This is what Gutu Mission has done today. We saw them developing their school, and now the community. We will not be surprised later on to hear that they are facilitating developmental projects even outside Gutu  district because they are following the proper principles of development,” he said.
Headman Chisvinu, Leonard Dambware encouraged the people to return the kindness through responsible use of the borehole.
“Let us jealously look after this property and bear in mind the challenges that will come if we recklessly damage the borehole.
“This borehole will serve our livestock as well and this is a relief in light of the very hot weather that threatens to make our rivers and streams dry,” Dambware added.

Potential investors might be smiling all the way to Masvingo following revelations that the council is offering a strategic site for a mega shopping mall and road port at 1,5 kilometres from the city centre along Beitbridge road, two sites for private school development in Rujeko as well as prime land for commercial development in the Central Business District (CBD).
The sites for private schools are measuring approximately 12 hacters each.
The commercial stands are in Oliver Street and Welby Avenue and the council expects to sell a total of 53 stands measuring between 500 and 1000 square metres.

According to council documents seen by TellZim News, the commercial stands are ideal for the development of multi-storey buildings for offices, medical centres and other commercial activities.
The proposal to have a road port and shopping mall along Masvingo-Beitbridge highway, expected to occupy 5000 square metres, has since been given a nod.
There are various other investment opportunities in Masvingo as the local authority is already looking for land developers to partner in servicing low density residential stands in Rhodene and Mangwandi as well as development of high density residential stands in Runyararo West.
A developer is also needed to construct cluster housing units in the leafy suburb of Zimre Park and in Mucheke.
Those who want to venture into manufacturing industry still have the opportunity to grab an industrial stand along Bulawayo road.
“Available are 36 surveyed but unserviced industrial stands located along Bulawayo road for manufacturing activities,” reads part of the document.

Chibi High continues to shine

Hate them or love them, Chibi high is the school of the moment as it continues to dominate in both academic and non-academic disciplines.
Although everyone is complaining about economic challenges affecting the country with several schools failing to finish a single project in months if not years, Chibi high school has a different story to tell.
One can be forgiven for suspecting that the school is getting some donor funds due to various projects that have been started and finished in one year.
Asked on how the school has managed to implement various projects within 12 months, the headmaster Boniface Machingauta smiled and said ‘hard work brings success’.

Just this year, Chibi high has managed to construct a dining hall, eight semi-detached houses for both teaching and non-teaching staff, procured at least 80 computers for both library and research center. They also constructed three common rooms at the boys’ boarding as well as ablution facilities for both boys and girls.
The school has also revamped its water system to ensure 24 hour supply of clean water at all institutional premises.
As if that was not enough for 2015, the school went on to construct durawall with a razor wire for tight security at girls boarding.
“We have a culture of working hard…we set some targets for the year and we are happy that we have managed to achieve our goals. When people come here, they are shocked with our achievements but we simply tell them that unity and dedication have taken us this far,” said Machingauta.
Chibi high is also the current holders of the Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ) Moderator’s merit award.
Machingauta still dreams big for his school.
“We have big plans for this school. We are going to construct a 3000 seater hall starting in December 2015. The plan has been already approved and we are ready to start,” said Machingauta.
He also revealed that the school is going to construct two storey buildings for both boys and girls hostels.
“As you can see, we are dedicated to transform this institution to become every child’s dream school. The plan for storey buildings with three floors is here,” he added.
Asked on the number of awards received this year alone, Machingauta laughed and said he was almost failing to remember all of the awards received because they are many.
“I think we have to build a room specifically for the awards because they are too many,” said Machingauta.

Zvishavane teachers fetch water from river for nine months

Teachers from Bilashaba Primary School in Zvishavane district have gone for nine months without clean source of water thereby leaving them without an option besides walking for about two kilometers to a nearby river where they fetch water for daily consumption, TellZim News can reveal.
TellZim News crew has been informed that the river which had become an oasis of hope has since dried up and the teachers together with villagers from the surrounding five villages are now walking an extra kilometer to a nearby dam where they get raw water for drinking thereby exposing them to water borne diseases.
The dam has also become the only source of water for cattle and wild animals.

According to teachers who refused to be named, taps at the school went dry in March this year leaving them walking to the nearest borehole which immediately dried up due to high numbers of people getting water from it.
“Getting water from that borehole is now very difficult because you need more than 20 minutes to fill a 20 litre bucket. The borehole was not serviced for a long time now and we are left without an option besides going for open sources of water,” said the teacher.
Another teacher said they were resorting to using water guard before using the water for bathing because it is salty.
Some teachers go to Zvishavane town about 10 kilometers away where they buy clean water for drinking.
The school headmaster Mr Chipato refused to comment saying that he was not allowed to speak to the press.
However, Mrs Mapfumo who leaves nearby said they are now very much used to living in those conditions.

GZU names faculties after national heroes

Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) Vice Chancellor Professor Rungano Zvobgo has recently announced that the institution of higher learning has successfully named all its faculties after national heroes.
Speaking at the ninth graduation ceremony where President Robert Mugabe capped a total of 1 880 students, Prof Zvobgo said the move to use names that are borrowed from late revolutionary, regional and national icons shows the university’s effort to mainstream its niche to the legacy of its mandate.

“GZU has through its senate and approval of council renamed its faculties and critical centres. Further to the Hebert Chitepo Law School which was officially opened by our President, I am proud to announce the following; Gary Magadzire School of Natural Sciences named after the late long serving Zimbabwe National Famer’s Union president and declared national hero for his contribution to agriculture.
“Faculty of Arts now Joshua Nkomo School of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Culture and Heritage now Simon Muzenda School of Culture and Heritage, Faculty of Social Sciences named Julius Nyerere School of Social Sciences and Faculty of Commerce now Munhumutapa School of Commerce,” announced Prof Zvobgo.

Zvobgo further announced that the University is currently constructing a school of Education to be named after President Robert Mugabe.
Also rebranded is the university’s Centre of African and Asian Studies now Kwame Nkurumah Centre and the Gender and Cultural Studies Centre now Mbuya Nehanda Centre.
 “We continue to live your dream and to walk with you as we strive to develop the country’s human capital base,” Zvobgo added.
