Bikita Minerals set to resume long service awards

BIKITA – One of Zimbabwe’s leading and long serving mines, Bikita Minerals is set to resume long service awards this year, a tradition which was long eroded by the economic meltdown, Tell Zimbabwe can reveal.
In an interview with Tell Zimbabwe, company director Grant Hadson said it has always been the mine’s wish to resume such activities that reflects employer’s appreciation of workers  commitment to their organization.
He  revealed that the event is set for the 14th of August.
“It has always been the mine’s wish to resume such events after we had dropped it due to the 2008 economic meltdown,” said Hudson.
Bikita Minerals Human Resources Manager, Munyaradzi Mapeture also revealed that the company has given up to US$40 000 for prices to be awarded depending on the years of service starting from ten through up to 40 years of service.

“The mine has given up to US$40 000 for cash and boxed prices. The prices will be awarded to workers who joined the mine from 2005 backwards.
The price lists stand as US$100 cash price and wrist watches worth US$110 for twelve workers who have ten years with the company, US$165 cash price and android cellphones worth US$150 for twenty – eight workers with fifteen years with the mine, US$220 and ploughs worth US$250 for five employees who joined the mine twenty years ago, US$275 cash price and scotch carts worth US$500 for nine workers who have been with the mine for the last twenty five years.
Set to receive US$330 cash price and HP laptops valued at US$800 are nine workers who joined Bikita Minerals in 1985, US$385 cash gift and 42 inch LG flat screen television sets for only three workers who joined the mine 35 years ago and finally US$ 440 and a motor cycle valued at US$1 500 for the longest serving employee who has since clocked 40 years with the mine,” revealed Mapeture.
Meanwhile, Hudson said  Bikita Minerals is set to exceed the US$781 667 they allocated to co-operate social responsibility in 2014 to Bikita district this year. He noted that he wants to maintain his tradition meant o benefit and upgrade the livelihoods of the Bikita community.
“Last year we gave up to US$781 667 to the Bikita community through projects and donations we facilitated at different occasions. Among the donations and projects are quarry stones we give for free to charitable organizations, school blocks we have renovated and sporting activities we sponsor,” said Hudson.local

BIKITA – The Bikita ZANU PF executive has locked horns with expelled party cadre Rtd Colonel Claudius Makova who is demanding back a ‘donation’ of office furniture which is used at the Bikita district’s party office.
The furniture was given to Zanu PF before Makova was fired for aligning himself to the ousted Vice President Joice Mujuru.
After being fired from Zanu PF, Makova sent another expelled party member Kudakwashe Gopo to go and collect his personal property from the party office.
However, the district co-ordinator, Isaac Mashanda denied Gopo from taking the said property and a verbal dispute erupted.
Mashanda took a legal action against Gopo and he has since dragged him to the courts.
It is the state’s case that on the first of June, Gopo went to the Bikita ZANU PF offices where he met the complainant to whom he told that he had been sent by Makova to retrieve his property which was still being used by the party after his expulsion.

It is alleged that Gopo attacked Mashanda verbally with abusive language before threatening to burn down the offices three times after the complainant had refused to release the office furniture.
However, Gopo’s legal representative Phillip Shumba, of Shumba and Mutendi Legal Practitioners maintained that the allegations being made by the complainant were unfounded arguing that Mashanda gave two statements to the police which do no tally.
“The differences shown in these statements in paragraph three show inconsistence in your facts as what you gave to the police on the first of June and what you gave to the police again on the 15th of June do not tally which might make the court believe that your allegations are unfounded,” defended Shumba.
In the cross examination, Mashanda revealed that he refused giving Gopo the furniture he had been sent to collect as he was not allowed to speak to expelled ZANU PF members though he later noted that there was no bad blood between him and the accused.
 “I could not give Gopo the furniture since I am not allowed to talk or co-operate with expelled ZANU PF members by the party. I cannot say that there is bad blood between me and Gopo since he is my maternal uncle and I was even surprised by his threats and words he said attacking me verbally with abusive language on the first of June,” Mashanda told the court.
Presiding over the issue, magistrate Victor Mohammad set the case for continuation on the 28th of July 2015.local

Masvingo North legislator and deputy minister of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation Development Davis Marapira said his busy schedule does not allow him to be in his constituency as expected by the people who voted him into office in 2013.
Following a scathing attack from the people who felt dumped by the legislator, Marapira said those complaining should understand that as a deputy minister, the MP’s busy schedule no longer allows him to be in the villages.
” I go to my constituency when I have time. Its only that as a deputy minister, I have a very busy schedule,” said Marapira.
However, villagers and councillors said Marapira has become a visiting MP.
They blamed the MP for neglecting them saying he is always telling them that he is now a national figure who is worried with national issue.

One villager who talked to Tell Zimbabwe on conditions of anonymity said that they are still yet to see what Marapira can do since he was elected into office
“Marapira has done nothing. We voted for him but he has disappeared ever since,” said the villager.
Another councillor who refused to be named said its shocking that they are not allowed to ask Marapira any question a few times that he visits the constituency.
“Marapira tells us asking him questions is like challenging President Mugabe who appointed him to be a deputy minister,” said the councillor.
But Marapira insists that all the accusations are unfounded and blames wishful thinkers for being on the forefront of trying to soil his reputation.
“How can people spread such rumors that I have abandoned my constituency? People have to understand that I am a national politician and I move from point to point executing projects in my ministry”, said Marapira.
“As far as the roads are concerned, it is not my duty to see to it that they are fixed because they fall under the jurisdiction of councillors. The roads are under the council and I have nothing to do with that”, said Marapira.
Tell Zimbabwe crew has recently visited Masvingo North constituency and found out that the villages have teamed up to maintain the roads since they are the ones affected.

Masvingo City Council top 15 debtors exposed!

 Masvingo City  Council (MCC)’s top 15 debtors have been exposed with the Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) topping the list as it owes the local authority nearly nine million dollars, Tell Zimbabwe can reveal.
According to information gathered by this publication recently, ZNA owes US$ 8 785 686 while Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) comes second with US$ 2 804 145. The Zimbabwe Prisons Services (ZPS) is the third highest debtor and will have to pay US$ 1 898 674 in order to clear its debt.
The embattled Cold Storage Company (CSC) is placed fourth with a debt of US$ 1 070 o58 while Masvingo Technical College follows closely with a debt of US$ 557 177.
As if not to be outdone, Masvingo Teachers College which houses Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) main campus is placed at sixth position with a debt of US$ 364 830.
Reliable sources at council revealed that Grain Marketing Board (GMB) is at number seven with a debt of US$ 221 572 and the Ministry of Local Government comes in eighth position with a debt of US$ 190 572 while National Railway of Zimbabwe (NRZ) is at the ninth position with debt of US$ 153 837.
On the tenth position is the Masvingo General Hospital which will have to pay US$ 144 217 to clear the debt.
Following closely is Zanu PF’s traditional home of meetings – the Chiefs hall which owes council US$ 90 529 while the Provincial Education Director (PED)’s office is struggling to pay US$ 35 881.
Placed at the 13th position is the DDF Training Centre with a debt of US$ 34 862. Although People’s Shop run by Masvingo Informal Traders Association (MITA)’s exact debt could not be established by the time of going to press, sources told Tell Zimbabwe that the Gilbert Chikwata led organization will have to look for not less than US$ 30 000 in order to pay off the debt. In fact several warning letters were written to Chikwata but he is reluctant to pay for the services rendered to People’s Shop.
At the 15th position is Provincial Medical Director (PMD)’s office which owes Masvingo’s council US$ 4 413.
Victoria High  is the worst among schools
In the schools section, Victoria High School which used to be one of the best secondary schools in Masvingo proves to be the most notorious debtor with a debt amounting to US$ 100 472.
In this section, Victoria High is in its own league as the second highest debtor Shakashe Primary School will only have to look for about US$ 6 226.
Tell Zimbabwe is reliably informed that Ndarama High School is the third debtor with US$ 5 088 while Hellen McGhie Primary need to pay US$ 4 991. Victoria Primary is number five with a debt of US$ 4 880 followed by Runyararo Primary which will need to pay US$ 3 804. Dikwindi Primary School is placed on seventh position with US$ 2 934 followed by Vurombo Primary which will have to pay US$ 2 385.
On number nine is Mucheke High while Chikato Primary becomes number ten debtor among schools with US$ 1 585 and US$ 1 046 respectively.
According to information gathered by Tell Zimbabwe Christian College is number 11 with a debt of US$ 936 while Rujeko Primary school becoming the best school in terms of paying debts as it only owes US$ 23.
Mayor says efforts to get money from debtors remain fruitless

City mayor Cllr Hubert Fidze said the city council has tried to engage all the institutions over the debts but to no avail.
“As the council we have engaged all the institutions that owe us but it has been difficult because they all say they do not have the money to pay. They have even failed to come up with payment plans.
“I want to make it clear that as the council we are doing our level best to get our money. We have even sent a team to engage the Finance minister to secure debts owed by government institutions”, said Fidze.
Fidze said all the efforts they have taken so far have been fruitless since the same song of no money is repeated over and over again.
“We have tried negotiations but they have been fruitless since they are saying there is no money. This has left the council crippled in as far as effective service delivery is concerned”, added Fidze.local

MWENEZI – The little known Joshua Moyo has won the Zanu PF Mwenezi East primary elections after he managed to fend off a strong challenge from nine more contestants yesterday to get the right to represent the party in the anticipated parliamentary by-election penciled for September.
Moyo polled 1203 votes shrugging off a challenge from his closest rival Marvelous Chifumuro who got 893 votes.
Webster Muzara came a third, with 812 votes while Mamberesi became the fourth with 499 votes. One  Mandebvu who was widely tipped to win the election is number five with 451 votes followed by Muchara who polled 447 votes . Murefu got 204 votes followed by Justin Sithole who polled 194 while Hungwe is number nine with 174 votes.
 Clara Shumba came last with a paltry 75 votes. 

Moyo is likely square off against former Mwenezi East MP Kudakwashe Bhasikiti, who has been sacked from the party and has been challenging his expulsion in the courts.
Masvingo Zanu PF Provincial Chairperson, Paradzai Chakona said the primary elections went smoothly adding his party was ready for the by-election.
“The elections to replace Bhasikiti ended well and we congratulate the winner and ask everyone else to rally behind the winner,” said Chakona.
“This was an important preparation ahead of the by elections which have been set for September this year,” added Chakona.
Meanwhile, Jusibee Omar was disqualified from the race under unclear circumstances, throwing his short term political ambitions into disarray.politics

Through the Night 2 promising

Through the Night 2, a feature film written and directed by one of Masvingo’s youngest filmmakers, Sydney Taivavashe is promising to be another blast following the stable’s 2013 National Arts Merits Awards-nominated film.
Produced by Nelned Pictures in association with Asher Media, the film is sequel to the 2013 NAMA-nominated Through the Night.
The film was last Friday premiered at a packed Charles Austin Theatre, and among the guests was Masvingo Mayor Hubert Fidze.
In an interview, Taivavashe said despite the delays the crew encountered in finishing the film, it is better in every way compared to their previous offering.
“Through the Night 2 appears to be better in every way; the picture quality has improved, the acting in itself has improved as well due to the introduction of a very talented actor, Charles Munganasa, (whose) performance in the film kind of motivated the rest of the cast to up their game, ” Taivavashe said.
“It is a crime-gangster film, and it asks the question: How far would you go if your family is taken away from you? As for the storyline I am not clear which of the two (One and Two) is better because they are both brilliant. The viewers would have to be the judges of that,” he said.

The youthful filmmaker said the National Parks and Wildlife Management Department, which took six months to respond to their request of making the film promote the anti-poaching campaign, caused the delay in the completion of the film as he had to change the story completely.
“I would say lack of commitment from the National Parks caused the delay. The original theme was about promoting anti-poaching in Zimbabwe. They made us wait six months beating about the bush only to tell us it was impossible to work with them due to the sensitivity of the subject,” Taivavashe said.
“Our biggest challenge however was trying to make this film as professional as I could make it using a single camera, so most scenes were shot more than ten times to get all the angles and shots to make it appear as if we used many cameras,” Taivavashe said.
“The whole process was sometimes very frustrating and the other thing was keeping actors happy and motivated since this project has taken us nine months to finish,” he said.
Taivavashe says he is expecting big things from Through the Night 2 as a lot of people who have watched the trailer have fallen in love with it, though their main focus is on DVD sales, which will help them buy proper film equipment.local

Race to replace ousted former Minister for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Mwenezi East legislator Kudakwashe Bhasikiti moves a step up today with Zanu PF holding its primary elections in preparation for a by- election slated for September this year.
The primary election is going ahead despite the fact that Bhasikiti has filed an urgent application in the constitutional Court challenging High Court ruling that endorsed his dismissal from the party.
Ten (10) candidates are battling to replace the outspoken politician in Mwenezi East.
Zanu PF provincial chairperson Paradzai Chakona confirmed the development saying his party was ready for the by-election.
 “The primary elections to select the party’s candidate for the Mwenezi East by-election is going ahead according to plan. Everything has been put in place to ensure the success of the process,” said Chakona.
He quashed fears that Bhasikiti’s case may derail the process, saying internal party processes like the primary election could not be affected by the challenge.

“This is a primary within the party. Only the actual by-election is subject to the finalization of the legal challenge. We will go ahead with our primary election and wait for the case to be finalized before we can go into the by-election,” said Chakona.
He said ZANU PF was in full swing to contest and win the by-election and strengthen the party’s support base in Mwenezi.
“We are prepared to contest and win the seat on behalf of our party when the time for the by-election comes,” added Chakona.
Bhasikiti is seeking to set aside Proclamation Number 7 of 2015 which set the Nomination Court date as July 20 and the by-election date as September 19 2015.
He argues that all election-related processes should be done after 31 July, when his challenge against his dismissal from ZANU PF would have been finalized.
Meanwhile, one of the popular contestants Jusibee Omar who contested in Masvingo Urban primary elections and lost to Daniel Shumba in 2013 tried his luck in Mwenezi East but his long time dream to become a legislator was once again thwarted as his CV was not considered for the race by the selection team.
This becomes Omar’s fourth trial to become an MP. Politics

Vendors have blamed Chiredzi Town Council for failing to end perennial rubbish collection problems at the town‘s main vegetable market saying the developments might trigger another Cholera outbreak.



For a place that was forcibly shut down by health officials during the cholera outbreak of 2008 to 2009, the situation is now deadly as council has gone for months without collecting garbage leaving vendors with no option other than dumping rubbish at illegal sites.
A visit by Tell Zimbabwe reporters to Chiredzi‘s vegetable market popularly known as “Kumagaraji“ revealed that council has forgotten about its duty to collect garbage from this area despite vendors paying money towards service delivery.
One vendor Martha Majarimani said council‘s failure to timely collect garbage at their market has created conditions which favour the breeding of mosquitoes and flies.
“Chiredzi Town Council collects a dollar per day from all vendors‘ so that they improve service delivery but as you can see there is no sign of service delivery. There are no rubbish bins, we are just dumping our rotten vegetables everywhere and this has created breeding places for mosquitoes and flies,“ said Majarimani.
Givemore Munhamo a Chiredzi resident said the town risks another Cholera outbreak and the council is to blame for that.
“The town council should place bins or find a proper disposal area where vendors can dump rotten produce,“ said Munhamo.
Director for National Vendors Union of Zimbabwe Samuel Wadzai blamed council for neglecting the welfare of vendors despite collecting money from them on a daily bases.
“Vendors have always been subjected to bad treatment in each and every town and as NAVUS we want that corrected. Vendors are paying money to councils on a daily bases but they are getting nothing in return, Look at their working environments, there are no bins to accommodate the garbage despite us being the only source of fresh vegetables in Chiredzi,“ said Wadzai.
Wadzai said vendors will run periodic clean up campaigns at their working places as a measure to control risks associated with operating on dirty area.health

Mozambican street kid wants to perform for Mugabe

An intriguing Mozambican street kid whose tyre trotting skills brought business to a halt in Masvingo recently has said he wishes to hold a show for President Robert Mugabe.
Speaking to Tell Zimbabwe, Kupa Zeka said he does not know his age said he wishes to perform before Mugabe.
“My big wish with my talent is to hold a show for the President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe. I really enjoy my business and wish to reach far with it,” said Zeka, in his poor Shona accent.
Zeka’s aide who refused to be named said Zeka is of Mozambican nationality and is an orphan who relies on his street shows for a living.
“Zeka is an orphan and a Mozambican national. He only visited Zimbabwe to do his street show business for which he earns a living from well wishers as they always shower him with money during performances in the streets,” said the aide.

The aide added that Zeka learnt his skills as he grew up, firstly by trotting on a pestle (duri) until his abilities grew to trotting on a tyre with astonishing balance and entertaining skill.
“As Zeka grew, he first learnt his tides by riding on a pestle for which he surprisingly started trotting on a tyre with astonishing balance and entertaining skill,” added the aide.
Meanwhile, Zeka has been to Mutare, Harare and currently in Masvingo. He said his next stop will be Bulawayo.local

Women group manufactures re-usable menstrual pads

MASHAVA – Shining Star – a Mashava based group of women that focuses on manufacturing re-usable sanitary wear has started a project aimed at helping school children to access the hygienic pads at affordable prices.
One of Shining Star group members Juliet Mapaike said their project comes as a lasting solution for children especially girls in rural areas who often end up joining prostitution in search of money to buy sanitary pads.
” Our pads are unique in the sense that they can be used more than once. They are made out of cloth and they are very affordable,” said Mapaike.
Mapaike added that most secondary school going girls are highly benefitting from their initiative.
” Our product is a solution for high school girls who sometimes resort to absconding school lessons as they lack proper sanitary wear due to financial challenges,” added Mapaike.
Mapaike said the project is set to improve the way of life for high school girls.health
