Masvingo newspaper charity gala slated for June 28
Masvingo – The Mirror newspaper Charity Gala intended to raise funds for building houses for needy throughout the province and supporting emergency cases has been slated for June 28, 2014 at Mucheke Stadium.
Top musicians, Sulumani Chimbetu, Mathias Mhere and Slizer of Botswana have already confirmed their attendance and travelled all the way to Chivi on Wednesday where they interacted with the would be beneficiaries of their show.

“It will be a family funny day, with music, drinks and other forms of entertainment. The gala will start at 10am and run until about 10pm. It starts in the morning to make it a truly family day where the people of Masvingo enjoy in order to support those who are in need,” said Mlambo.
He said stands would be available for companies to advertise their wares and those interested are being invited to contact The Mirror. He also said that companies that sell food would also be invited to get stands.
It will cost $2 for children and $3 for adults to get into the stadium
Masvingo Information Kiosk officially opened
Reformed Church University (RCU) Vice Chancellor Professor Wiseman Magwa has today officiallly opened Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) sponsored information kiosk in Masvingo.
The kiosk is housed at NANGO southern region office opposite Irrigation Services.
Speaking at the occasion which was attended by people from all walks of life, Prof Magwa said opening information kiosk was a positive step towards fulfilling the demands of the new constitution.
“Information is very important as it assists us in making critical decisions in life. This is the first step towards the right direction and I believe that Masvingo community is going to benefit from this gesture,” said Magwa.
Prof Magwa thanked MISA and NANGO for partnering for ’a good cause’.
“All we need these days is to have people who can come up with initiatives. Great Zimbabwe monuments could not have been constructed if our fore fathers lacked vision. We need to support these initiatives and I challenge various organisations to come with their fliers and books here so that we build our knowledge bank,” said Prof Magwa.
Zimbabwe Association of the Visually Handicapped (ZAVH) coordinator Mr Timothy Mudarikwa bemoaned lack of information among people living with disability.
Two youths arrested for harassing mayor
Two youths in Masvingo were arrested on Tuesday afternoon for trying to lock the city mayor councillor Hubert Fidze in the Civic Centre hall accusing him of failing to run the city council.
The mayor confirmed the incident to TellZimbabwe.
“There were two youths who tried to lock me in the city hall. They had invited me to their meeting to address them on the issues surrounding council operations but when I arrived, the youths became violent.
“I tried to calm them so that we would engage in a meaningful discussion but when they continued to harass me, I tried to walk out but they closed the door and insisted that I talk to them,” said Fidze.
The mayor further said municipal police were immediately called to arrest the youths.
“Two youths who were rowdy were arrested by our municipal police and they were taken to Masvingo central police station,” added Fidze.
However, Fidze said he was just embarrassed by the incident but was not physically assaulted.
“I was not physically assaulted but I felt embarrassed. I only identified a young man called Prosper Tiringindi,” said Fidze.
TellZimbabwe was informed that the meeting was attended by about 20 people who had initially told the mayor that they wanted to launch a residents association for Masvingo.
Mayor Seeks Divine Intervention
Masvingo city mayor Councillor Hubert Fidze together with local pastors are organising an interdenominational prayer meeting targeted to plead with God to end calamities befalling the city.
The meeting scheduled for Saturday 25 January in Mucheke Stadium is also aimed at ‘inviting the intervention the Holy Spirit in matters such as rain and water levels at our supply dam (Mutirikwi), revival of industry, sanitation of the city among other developmental goals’.
According to the letter inviting all willing members of the society, the mayor believes that after the prayer meeting in Mucheke, some of the perennial problems affecting Masvingo will be solved.
Fidze is also using some social media platforms to campaign for huge attendance at the meeting. The meeting which begins at 9 O’cloack is supposed to end in the afternoon.
“May we all come in our numbers to support this noble cause, ” said Fidze.
Masvingo Minister’s fraternal composed of various pastors and bishops has since pledged their support for the meeting.
MCC youngest councillor speaks out
Masvingo’s youngest councillor elect Godfrey Kurauone (25) who is representing the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) says he has joined politics to change the status quo.
Kurauone who is in his early 20s might be one of the few youngest councillors to be ever elected at the Masvingo City Council (MCC). Kurauone who is representing ward four has therefore defied all odds and managed to be a ‘city father’ despite his age.
However, despite being young, Kurauone said he was going to deliver. He said it has always been his wish to join politics at a tender age. Now that his wishes were fulfilled, Kurauone popularly known as Kuraa said it’s now time for him to put theory into practice.
“Now the election is over and there is no more electioneering but I want to promise the people of Masvingo that I am going to work day and night to make sure things change for the better.
“A lot of people were asking me how I would deal with old people or those who are married when I am not, however, I want to reiterate that it’s not about age but it’s about the vision. It is time ready for the young generation to demonstrate their capabilities,” said Kuraa.
Kuraa said he was pushed to join politics in 2002 when he was still in form two at a Secondary School in Zaka.
“I was pushed to join politics when I was in form two… a lot of bad things happened to me and my education was affected and there was no option besides fighting for my rights. In so doing I then realised there was a lot I could do for the people who were in the same situation and from there upto now, I am trying to represent the down trodden,” he added.
Kuraa was arrested several times in the course of fighting for students rights at Masvingo Poly.
Masvingo waits for next mayor
Elections have come and gone. All is now set for the installation of councillors and selection of the city mayor. The people in Masvingo are desperately waiting for the mayor and the deputy. A lot of names have been put forward but it seems no one is certain until the new mayor is appointed. Although is crystal clear that the new mayor is likely to come from MDC-T because the have 60 percent of the seats, there could be surprises as Zanu PF is tirelessly working to get the most influential post in the council.
MDC-T has already whipped its councillors in line and forced them to choose an external candidate to be the next mayor. In that case, former Masvingo mayor Alderman Fermias Chakabuda stands a better chance to be re-appointed to become the mayor while councillor elect Hubert Fidze is going to be his deputy. Party provincial chairperson Wilstuff Sitimere and former Masvingo district chairperson Charirwe are also eying the post. However, close sources have since informed this publication that all councillors were forced to vote for Chakabuda. If councillors are told to vote for candidates among themselves, Fidze stand a better chance to become the mayor and Babylon Beta would become his deputy.
Too early to rule out Zanu PF
Considering the calibre of MDC councillors, it is too early to rule out Zanu PF candidate. Zanu PF has two strong candidates who are also eying the post. Ward 1 councillor Gacia Mundondo and ward 10′s Lovemore Mufamba are lobbying to be also voted for the top post. Mufamba is very agressive and has the capacity to win two votes from some ‘weak’ MDC councillors. It only needs Mufamba and Mundondo to agree so that one of them withdraw his candidature in order for Zanu PF to stand a high chance to land the top post or that of the deputy mayor. Mundondo is however, not likely to land the top post as he is considered a clown. Despite being a Reverend, Pastor Mundondo is taken for a clown and that can cost him dearly.

With Dynamos Football Club nearing its 50th anniversary, it is a noble initiative to look at the position DeMbare finds itself in after half a century of top flight football and the position it could have been inwithin this time span history.
Formed in 1963 by black players who chose to rise above racial discrimination which they had suffered in other clubs,Dynamos ‘DeMbare’ quickly became a favourite as highlighted by the fact that it went on clinch the title in its year of inception, a record it still holds to this day.
2013 marks exactly 50 years from when Obadiah “Wasu” Sarupinda, Patrick Dzvene (late), Ephraim Mpariwa, Richard Chiminya, Nathan Maziti, Bernard “Magitare” Marriot, Josiah Akende (late), Allan “Teacher” Hlatywayo (late), Freddie Mkwesha, Jairos Banda, Danny Bricks, AloisMesikano, Sam Dauya (late) and Sydney Matthews started he journey which will lead their predecessors to Zimbabwean football dominance.
Robson Rundaba, who is now an official at Dynamos was once quoted as having said;
“When the club was formed it had a good base. Dynamos had its own brand of football; it was about entertainment and winning, attacking football.”
Dynamos legend and most successful coach, Sunday ‘Marimo’ Chidzambwa is recognised for strengthening the Defensive culture of the club. This has seen it having the least goals scored against, over quite some time.
Over the past 50 years DeMbare has won a record 19 league titles (1963, 1965,1970, 1976,1978, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2007, 2011 and 2012); winning it four times in a row from 1980 to 1983. The team has managed to defend its title a record six times making them the all time kings of Zimbabwean soccer. With countless league and knockout cups in its cabinet, soccer is short without it being mentioned. They have groomed and produced legends. They have moulded their institution into a typical beacon of Zimbabwean success.
DeMbare has unquestionably proved it mettle within the borders of Zimbabwe but its major down fall has been its lack of intelligence and depth in the African jungles over the past years.Dynamos is an African giant which is slowly going into hibernation even though few might take notice.
What those holding the reins of the DeMbare family have failed to do is to steer their ship closer to professional football like has been seen in North, South and West Africa.
After 50 years Dynamos has no stadium, no bus to compete with African giants and it still struggles to pay its fares and accommodation whenever it ventures into the African jungles. DeMbare is slowly falling into the pit of laughing stocks so many giants have fallen prey to.
Where it not for BancABC I bet ‘Team Zora-Butter’ would be having problems paying its troops.Being an ardent fan of Zimbabwean soccer I wonder where all those gate takings go to.This is what has to be done at DeMbare to make it a formidable club across Africa.
First things first, with all due respect to Highlanders Football Club, DeMbare needs to stop comparing itself to Bosso.Dynamos is an African giant with the highest number of league titles in the whole of Southern Africa. Its moniker ‘7 million’ has to mean something. They are a brand, better than most in southern Africa.
Even if the best two teams in Southern Africa in their respective leagues add up their titles, they still won’t get to 19.
Its high time DeMbare takes a North African approach to soccer, that approach has paid dividends for even teams in Europe (a closer look at Chelsea F.C is a good example).
Dynamos has to aim at the CAF Champions League crown and stop squabbling with Bosso, 50 years is a long wait for its legion of followers.Its trophy cabinet is short of that one trophy yet management is busy hunting for local glory day in day out, Africa’s biggest club cup is the real deal.
DeMbare needs to take a European approach to club management.
This simply means, Dynamos should stop its habit of hiring and firing coaches willy-nilly like what almost happened to KallistoPasuwa. They should let him instil his football culture over years, let’s say 10 years.
Arsenal Football Club have gone for seven years without a single cup but they still hold on to Arsene Wenger for a reason, that is how they have managed to remain a giant and that is how they have managed to create a type of play associated with them, that is what lacks at DeMbare.
It’s also high time DeMbare pays its players allowances and bonuses which are commensurate with what is expected of them. You cannot expect the crown from someone you are paying peanuts. It is about time the powers that be at DeMbare reward players with bonuses which are competitive enough to ward of predators from South Africa and Zimbabwe’s own F.C Platinum to be specific.
It also needs to stop selling players like it’s their main agenda.Dynamos is not an academy for wealthy clubs, it just has to stop selling its best players.
Look at Denver Mukamba, RodrickMutuma, TakesureChinyama and Simba Sithole just from the 2012 season, these players could have brought the Champions league crown home.This culture has to stop if the dream of a CAF Champions League Crown is to be made into reality.
Its high time Dynamos learnt to splash cash around, be extravagant enough to scare away vultures (buy a state of the art bus, build a stadium, pay highly competitive sums).
The funds are there.
DeMbare having amassed so many nick names over its 50 year history, (DeMbare, DeMbada, Zora-Butter, HainaNgozi, Kochekera, Chikopokopo, 7 Million) is still failing to effectivelymarketits replica jerseys to raise capital; that is a major setback.
Copy what is good and disregard that which is not, Dynamos and the rest of Zimbabwe’s clubs need to take a leaf from the South African league which has risen to be one of the best in Africa.
What is lacking at DeMbare is a man with a greater vision, I hope that man is found quickly enough before Egyptians and South Africans start making fun of the Zimbabwean soccer giants who never win anything.
A fish rots from the head down, hence introspection and change has to begin at the top before those in the lower echelons of the club ranks.

ZIFA Eastern region division one log leaders are edging closer of championship after dismissing hapless Surry United 3-0 in a league match played at Chishamiso Stadium in Chiredzi on Sunday.

ZIMUTO Reformed Church in Zimbabwe (RCZ) congregation are this year’s national winners of the Nyaningwe Supermarket/RCZ Sungano yaVarume soccer tournament played at Mucheke Stadium in Masvingo on Saturday.
The Masvingo team lifted the coveted trophy after dismissing the Harare’s Warren Park/DZ congregation 4-3 in the dreaded penalty shootout after the two teams shared the spoils nil- all in regular time in an exciting match.

The tournament which was running under the theme, ‘ Sports Evangelism’ lived up to expectations as both teams showed signs of brilliance. The Christian soccer fiesta is in its second year running with the inaugural edition played last year at the same venue. All sixteen teams which were divided into four groups displayed flashes of brilliance.
