Chivi – Ward 14 under 23 soccer boys beat their ward 11 competitors 4-1 while the under 23 netball trophy was lifted by ward 30 after a thrilling 6-5 win over ward 17 in the Austin Tsvakwi Hakunavanhu Challenge Cup annual tournament held last week.
The tournament had six netball teams and four under 23 boys’ football teams after the preliminary matches were played at different wards to decide finalists.
In the men’s games, ward 14 met ward 11 in a one-sided final match which ward 14 won 4-1 to lift the ATH cup.
The winners took advantage of sloppy ward 11 defences and netted two goals with an acrobatic fourth goal, which was later named goal of the tournament, from Daniel Hombe, sealing the fate of ward 11.
The netball final match between ward 30 and ward 17 was won by ward 30 who lifted the cup after winning 6-5.
Sponsored by Chivi district NASH chairperson, Austin Hakunavanhu, the tournament is now an inspiration to the rural people of Chivi with every competing team walking away with an award.
“We just try to make recreational services available for the people in rural areas so that they keep themselves occupied and entertained with a view of avoiding anti-social activities. I am not alone in this but I have friends who help sponsor this tournament,” Hakunavanhu said.
The tournament takes place every August when people in rural areas are less busy with agricultural activities. This year’s successful tournament is the fourth since the it was launched.news
