MASVINGO – Gokomere High School, a Roman Catholic ran institution, recently welcomed a new head, bringing a new vision and leadership that has instilled hope for the restoration of the school’s former glory.
The new head, Emmanuel Muvengi confirmed the development and said he assumed duty beginning of this term.
Muvengi replaces Cephas Vhurumuku who has been acting head since the departure of the substantive head Aquanos Mazhunga who left the school in 2023.
He said he was targeting to instill discipline at the school as well as growing pass rate and taking sporting activities to great heights.
“I assumed duty on the opening day of this term and I want to assure parents that I will do my best to instill discipline in leaners and make sure that we get best results. I will also make sure that the school takes sporting activities to greater heights,” said Muvengi.
Muvengi joined Gokomere from Danhamombe High School in Chivi where he has been at the helm of the school since 2018 bringing wealth of experience having been in the education sector for more than two decades.
He joined the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education in 1998 as a teacher at Lundi High before he was promoted to be the deputy head at Magura High in his home district of Zaka.
From Magura, he was then promoted to head at Danhamombe where he improved pass rates and in 2023 the school was ranked best performing school at A Level in the district after recording 100 percent pass rate with two girls scooping 20 points. The least performing learner that year attained 8 points.
Muvengi is credited for transforming Danhamombe from a rural day secondary school to a low cost boarding school with the assistance of Alex Mashamhanda of the Mashwede fame.
He initiated education 5.0 through various projects such as piggery and fish farming which are currently thriving at the school.
Muvengi has a mammoth task of restoring the school to its former glory after the school was marred with reports of indiscipline, abuse of school resources and poor diet.
This reduced the school’s pass rate as well as its sporting prowess and several parents were shunning the school.
He is a holder of an Arts Master’s Degree in African History from Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), an arts general degree from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) and a certificate in education from the same university.
He is in the fourth year doing special honours in History with GZU.
