Manicaland CSOs drive PWD inclusion agenda

MUTARE-Civic Society Organisations from Manicaland recently conducted a workshop aimed at ensuring inclusion of People with Disabilities (PwDs) as well capacitating non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) sector on how best to handle issues around people with disabilities.
Disability inclusion has been one of the focal points in the drive to deal with segregation of disability organisations and movements.
The training, held at Presbyterian Church in Mutare on April 28, 2023 was earmarked on capacitating CSOs in Manicaland in the area of disability inclusion along with National Association for Non-Governmental Organisations (NANGO) thematic areas.
NANGO Provincial Coordinator Frank Mukwavaira said disability inclusion is a cross cutting issue that has respects on human rights.
“NANGO carries under its wings an amalgamation of various issues, constituencies and representative groups all with the singular focus of meeting the developmental needs of men, women and children in Zimbabwe. To achieve this, the association has its membership segmented into 10 different thematic sectors including Disability, as one of the cross cutting sectors,” said Mukwavaira.
He said sustainable development of human rights have over the years translated to disability inclusion.
“Mainstreaming human rights-based approach to disability, in combination with targeted measures, will then make the concerns and experiences of persons with disabilities an integral dimension of the design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of policies and programmes in all developmental spheres. It was against this background that CSOs within the NANGO Eastern Region in Manicaland province convened for a CSO Disability Training for Civil Society Organizations, facilitated by the Federation of Organizations of Disabled People in Zimbabwe (FODPZ).
“This was also aimed at learning on how to integrate disability inclusion across all sectors to ensure that CSOs inculcate provisions to accommodate PwDs in their programming including the correct terminology as well as right approaches and responsibilities of all stakeholders,” he added.
Mukwavaira added that NANGO remains steadfast on following National Development Strategy 1 (NDS 1) which also preaches the gospel of inclusivity.
“Disability inclusiveness therefore requires placing PwDs at the centre of any CSOs response, without discrimination, to ensure that they have equal and meaningful access, both in terms of protection, assistance as well as participation in decision making processes.
“NANGO remains committed to complement all efforts in line with the country’s National Development Strategy 1 (NDS 1) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on ‘leaving no one behind and to reach those furthest first’,” Mukwavaira added.
Quizzed on how important it is to capacitate CSOs with relevant Disability Inclusion programmes, Mhakwe Heritage Foundation Trust Director David Mutambirwa said there is already a gap that needs to be filled when it comes to issues of including PwDs.
“There is a gap on inclusion of people living with disabilities in programming from inception, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. As civil society, we have a propensity to think for them rather than getting it from them. I personally have a problem with the terms consult and participation. Many times these terms are used for cosmetic purposes,” said Mutambirwa.
The workshop was attended by 38 participants from across the civic society sector.

Zvishavane pupils challenged to make smart career choices

Pupils from various secondary schools around Zvishavane were recently challenged to make smart career choices in light of the continuous global evolution of digital technology and the increasing demand for digital skills.
This came up at a career fair hosted by non-profit The Usawa Institute (TUI) in partnership with Shekinah Glory Organization held in Zvishavane on April … to capacitate students with career guidance.
In attendance were also parents and development partners operating in Zvishavane.
Speaking at the fair, TUI’s Kelvin Mutize said 65 percent jobs pupils were preparing for were likely not to be there in a few years’ time hence the need to harness evolving technology and prioritise entrepreneurial and self-development skills.
“The world we are stepping into requires critical thinkers and innovators,” Mutize said in his presentation.
This comes at a time when Zimbabwe and the world at large is undergoing a digital evolution, which has presented students with new challenges and opportunities when it comes to career choices.
With the rise of new technologies and digital platforms, many traditional career paths are being transformed, offering new possibilities for those with the right skills and training.
Shekinah Glory Organization founder Juliet Bvekwa also emphasised on the importance of moving with the times and engaging parents in the process so that they understand the modern generation’s career options.
“Intelligence without career guidance is a waste of time and we always encourage parents to discuss career options with their children and not succumb to the pressure of just enrolling their children in university. Children must be self-aware from a very young age and specialise in their interests,” Bvekwa said.
She also encouraged pupils to increase their experience and knowledge beyond academia, through voluntary work.
One of the parents who attended the career fair expressed her appreciation for such an opportunity and challenged students to pursue their dreams.
“I am happy that our children are presented with opportunities we did not have during our time. As parents we also need to be educated so that we know more about the digital world. This will make it easy for us to support our children when they don’t opt for traditional jobs,” she said.
TUI founder Anozivaishe Marindire encouraged students to strategically position themselves in the digital world.
“There are a lot of free online courses which offer knowledge on skills such as coding and entrepreneurship. Always have to confidence to start a venture or apply for these international opportunities. Nothing is beyond your reach.
“Most employers now prefer candidates who can navigate the digital landscape with ease hence probing students who are considering their career options to best position themselves to succeed in the digital world,” Marindire said.
Other sessions also included ettiquecy and how to conduct oneself in the workplace, which was led by TUI’s programmes manager Sinikiwe Marodza, and a group session where students had interactions with various organizations present.

Zimbabwe’s main opposition parties Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) and the MDC Alliance rekindled their animosity with a clash this time around Workers Day Commemorations in Masvingo hosted by labor movement Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) over having a dialogue.
The two parties’ representatives at the event held at Mucheke Hall in Masvingo on May 1, 2023 clashed on the best course of action before elections with MDC Alliance Provincial member Ephanos Makiwa saying there should be a dialogue between all political parties while CCC Masvingo Province Secretary for Elections Struggle Nyahunda said there should not be any dialogue unless it is a meaningful one.
Makiwa said calling for talks does not mean the party selling out but it is a move to find lasting solutions for the country to avoid a disputed election.
“Calling for talks does not mean that we are sellouts, but it is because we have seen that this country cannot have permanent solutions without having unity of all the political parties (nyika ino haigadzirisike kana tisina kutanga tagara pasi sevana vanyamunhu).
“At the Lancaster House, opponents at that time engaged in a dialogue which was not a sellout thing and the same happened in 2008 where Tsvangirai had talks with the government of the day and came up with the Government of National Unity and it was a not a sellout which is why we are advocating for a rational disputation where we get to agree to disagree.
“As MDC Alliance, we say we are not sellouts which is why we approach government openly (hatiendi usiku kunotaura negovernment as masikati pachena muchizviona). Obviously, if we look at it, if we are not careful, we will be heading for a disputed election like in 2018,” said Makiwa.
However, Nyahunda said the dialogue should have real political players not every ‘Tom and Jerry’ saying they cannot have a dialogue with parties without representatives in council or parliament.
“We are not refusing to take part in having a dialogue but we want a meaningful dialogue. We cannot have a dialogue with a party that does not even have a councillor or MP. That dialogue is futile because anyone from the streets can be taken on board to represent a party.
“After the 2018 elections, we resolved to not have a dialogue with people who do not have a following (vasingateerwi kana nemadzimai avo,) so we have resolved to have a meaningful dialogue convened by a neutral party,” said Nyahunda.
Nyahunda also said the so-called rational disputation was a way of distracting the conducting of elections over the next few months.
“The rational disputation that was being talked about here is just a way of delaying the conducting of elections. We want the elections to be held in July or August and allow people to choose their candidate (CCC president) and workers can get to have better salaries,” added Nyahunda.
The event was celebrated under the theme ‘Workers demand an inclusive Zimbabwe free from poverty, corruption and oppression’ and was also attended by various organizations including Zanu PF members, Masvingo City councilors, Masvingo United Residents and Ratepayers Association (MURRA), National Social Security Authority (NSSA) and Ministry of Labour among other affiliate unions in the ZCTU.
ZCTU called upon government to give workers US$ salaries in order to restore wage value and enhancing social security for the workers among other issues.

GWERU- A gang of artisanal miners last week reportedly killed a man a few metres from Ascot Extension shops.
The now deceased is reported to have engaged in an altercation with the gang which had also gone around assaulting other patrons.
Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the incident, but said investigations were still in progress.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred at around 2 am on Friday (April 28) after a gang of gold panners stormed Club 04 at Ascot Extension shops assaulting people.
“A group of violent people who were boasting that they were Magweja (artisanal miners) started the violence in the nightclub at around 9 pm.
“Around 2 am, the same group resumed their violent acts and this time they were randomly slapping people and assaulting them with knives,” he said
It is reported that the gang went on to confront a man who was outside the club.
“One of them produced a knife and started stabbing the now deceased all over the body before they drove away at high speed from the shops,” he added
According to some reports at least five patrons and a police officer who was on duty sustained injuries due to the attack.
The suspects reportedly tried to steal a getaway car but the tyres were shot leading to the arrest of two of the suspects while others escaped.

17 suspects arrested for lithium smuggling

…..Over 3 700 tonnes lithium ore intercepted in Masvingo

17 suspects were arrested over the weekend by Masvingo police following the interception of lithium ore weighing over 3 700 tonnes that was stored at three premises in the town’s dysfunctional industrial area.

The ore, which was recovered on Friday (May 5, 2023) is suspected to have been stolen from Bikita Minerals.

Some of the ore was found at a disused garage belonging to former transport operator Tanda Tavaruva popularly known as Mhunga.

Commenting during a tour of the industrial area where the ore was being kept, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Officer Commanding Masvingo Province Commissioner David Mahoya said currently only charges of theft maybe preferred against the accused as investigations are still underway.

“We have arrested a total of 17 accused persons who are helping police with investigations behind the storage and transportation of the lithium ore. We got a tip off from a responsible citizen after which we acted swiftly and intercepted the suspects two days ago.

“We have already deployed our officers to make sure that the recovered ore will not be tampered with. We also managed to intercept the vehicles here (in the warehouse yard) which were already loaded with the lithium ore for export,” said Mahoya.

He however could not pinpoint the exact charges the suspects would face apart from theft, though he highlighted they would face more than one charge.

“Currently I cannot safely say which charges the suspects are facing but they are likely to be charged with more than one charge with theft included. We are still investigating the sources of the lithium ore because the ore present here is quite different (pointing to that it might have been mined from different areas).

“The lithium ore present here is not yet processed and government has made it clear that no lithium ore would be exported before being processed,” added Com Mahoya.

A total of four haulage trucks and a tipper were impounded with two of the haulage trucks (with local registration plates) already with loaded containers that were South Africa bound.

Assistant Commissioner (Operations) Florence Marume said she got a tip off from a citizen and she went to the industrial area where she effected the arrests at around 1900 hours on Friday.

The police said it was easy for the transporters to pass through police check points as the police is not mandated to open containers, a mandate for tax organ, Zimra, but said after this incident police need to be authorised to open them since transporters carry paperwork for other goods which will not be in the container.

Outspoken former Chivi South Member of Parliament (MP) Killer Zivhu recently put to an end rumours that he wanted to stand as an independent candidate in the upcoming elections, saying it would be betrayal to Zanu PF even if he was still expelled.
Addressing a press conference at Eland Restaurant in Masvingo on May 3, Zivhu said he had no ambitions ever to be a parliamentarian, and if constituents in Chivi South still wanted him to lead, he was open for any other role in the party once he is readmitted.
Zivhu said he wanted to lay to rest indications by many of his supporters that he was eyeing the Chivi South seat, claiming that some Zanu PF losing candidates in the recent primaries as well as some Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) members were moving around campaigning for him as an independent candidate.
“There are some disgruntled candidates who lost in the recent Zanu PF primaries who are moving around campaigning for me. CCC is failing to get a competitive candidate and they have decided to go for me as an independent candidate.
“There are also people who were not happy with my expulsion and are campaigning for me without my consent. I am not going to contest as an independent candidate, not only in this election but even over the next 20 years. There is no way I can contest against ED,” he said.
Zivhu, who was expelled from the ruling party in June 2020 after he allegedly fell out with party leaders for breaking protocol said he remains Zanu PF and will always support President Emmerson Mnangagwa, whom he said he worked for to get him into power.
“I was there when these things started. We participated more and this is what we wanted; we wanted him (President Mnangagwa) to be president and it’s something that we fought for, for more than 15 years.
“I cannot just stop and help to destroy something that I worked for, for 15 years. What will I benefit from that?” he added.
He also spoke on his interactions with other politicians aligned to other parties other than Zanu PF, saying he does not find any reason to run away from them when they meet due to past relationships.
He refused to either confirm or deny social media statements attributed to him, saying since he was not a Zanu PF member he had no obligation to follow party protocol in conveying his opinions on various issues.
“I am not in the party now, so I have no obligation to follow party protocol in conveying my messages. I do not support corruption, unlike others who hide behind the president to support corruption. I have written to the party asking to be readmitted into the party and I’m waiting for a response.
“In the coming elections however I will be campaigning for ED even through the Crossborders’ Association, which has over 3 million traders,” Zivhu said.
In 2020, Zivhu was expelled from Zanu PF after he allegedly tried to facilitate a meeting between First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa and CCC president Nelson Chamisa’s wife, Thokozile Chamisa.

MUTARE-Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) May Day (Worker’s Day) celebrations in Mutare were short lived as Zanu PF supporters allegedly took over the event pitted for Moffat Hall in Sakubva.
Members believed to be aligned to Esau Mupfumi (Zanu PF Mutare Central Constituency 2023 elections parliamentary candidate) arrived at the hall and took over the event accusing organisers of politicizing the celebrations.
The commemorations which had former City of Mutare Mayor and CCC big wig Brian James and former Member of Parliament (MP) Regai Tsunga in attendance came to a complete standstill as Zanu PF members reportedly rioted claiming ZCTU was using the day for political gain.
Quizzed on the sudden turn of events, ZCTU Eastern Region chairperson Johannes Kwangari said invitations were sent to workers regardless of political connotations.
“I can only say sometimes people from the other side (Zanu PF) might have put things out of proportion and I understand we had invited every worker to come and attend. We are aware that everyone who came is a worker but what has just happened here, l have no comment.
“We invited all political parties so they were free to come,” said Kwangwari.
A reliable source told this publication said that the rapid turn of events was based on the fact that aspiring Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Mutare Central Constituency MP Brian James and his entourage had taken a trip in Sakubva before the commencement of the event and that was not received well by the opposing camp.
“Prior the start of the event, l think early in the morning, Brian James and his entourage took a visit in Sakubva and then returned to the venue. I think this did not sit well with Esau Mupfumi’s camp because you could actually hear them stating that,” said the source.
However, Zanu PF Manicaland Provincial Chairperson Tawanda Mukodza refuted the allegations.
“We don’t know anything about the disruptions at Moffat Hall. What l am aware of is that workers marched to Moffat Hall and held the function without any interference from Zanu PF. In simple terms we deny all the allegations that Zanu PF interfered with the proceedings at Moffat Hall,” said Mukodza.
Political analysts have termed this event ‘the genesis’ as it showcased prime rivalry between two candidates from the mass party Zanu PF and opposition CCC.
Brian James is the aspiring candidate for Mutare Central Constituency following the resignation of Innocent Gonese who was at the helm for over two decades.
Esau Mupfumi is heading towards the polls as Zanu PF candidate after a standout victory in the recently held party primary elections.

MASVINGO- City Council Mayor Advocate Collen Maboke and Chiredzi Town Council Chairperson Gibson Hwende were both booted out of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) parliamentary race in Masvingo Urban and Chiredzi Central respectively after their disqualifications on the third stage of the nomination process.
Though Hwende’s reason for disqualification could not be ascertained, Maboke is said to have been disqualified over his controversial ascension to the mayoral seat after defying party leader Nelson Chamisa’s directive to pave way for then favorite Godfrey Kurauone.
Maboke allegedly connived and formed a truce with Zanu PF’s three Masvingo councilors who supported his cause in exchange for the deputy mayoral post which was later won by Zanu PF’s Wellington Mahwende who is now contesting for Masvingo Urban on Zanu PF ticket.
Human Rights Lawyer Advocate Martin Mureri is tipped to represent the party as he is alleged to have been ranked first by the commissioners who were conducting the process.
Mureri will square off with Sam Chapfudza and Gibson Murinye who came third in the next round of the CCC selection process.
Masvingo Urban has since been divided over the two candidates with Mureri allegedly being the national executive’s choice while Chapfudza has support from sitting councilors most of whom were supporting Maboke.
Chapfudza’s main supporters are ward 4 councillor Alec Tabe who is harboring mayoral ambitions, Rocky Kamuzonda of ward 3 who has since moved to ward 2 owing to the delimitation exercise and Kingsley Sibanda who was also contesting and could have discovered that his chances are slim before chickening out.
He also has support from ward 7 councillor Richard Musekiwa who is now contesting in ward 8 courtesy of delimitation.
However, Kamuzonda and Musekiwa’s support could be insignificant for Chapfudza since ward 2 is now in Masvingo West and Ward 8 in Masvingo North.
In Masvingo South Knowledge Mabvuure is likely to sail through and square it off with Zanu PF’s Tanatsiwa Mukomberi after he went uncontested.
Pedzisayi Chifamba was uncontested in Masvingo West, while Emmanuel Chidaushe was uncontested also in Chivi North.
In Zaka North, the contest is between Munyaradzi Zanga and Bettas Makwara following the disqualification of Simon Mupindu who failed to go past the vetting stage for allegedly being aligned to former Provincial Chairperson James Gumbi.
Mupindu however told TellZim News that he had decided not to contest and people just chose to nominate him.
In Chiredzi Central, Chiredzi Town Council vice chairperson Ropafadzo Makumire took the lead followed by John Maganye following the disqualification of town chairperson Gibson Hwende.
In Masvingo Central, Moses Mavhaire allegedly took the lead at vetting stage followed by Innocent Munhazu.
In Chivi South, Dumisani Chikondere is said to be leading followed by Amato Ndekere, while Mhlolo who lost to Zanu PF’s Munyaradzi Zizhou in the 2022 by-elections is now allegedly supporting Chikondere.
In Gutu South, Hamandishe Gobvu took the lead while Erium Musendekwa and Samuel Tsvangirai are still in the race.

MASVINGO – The ruling party Zanu PF is in panic mode as another ‘Bhora Musango’ is looming following chaotic primary elections which are yet to be concluded since there are reruns in some provinces.
Speaking during a Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting recently, the Provincial Chairperson Robson Mavhenyengwa called for immediate action to unite people who are threatening a Bhora Musango.
Mavhenyengwa said there was need for a healing processes to unite people and make sure that those who lost support the winners.
“We have a directive from Harare. We have been instructed to go for healing processes in the rural areas and unite people. We need to console those who lost because some are still wailing and some are contemplating Bhora Musango,” said Mavhenyengwa.
He warned winners against celebrating their victory saying it pains others whom they need to win the next election and said the resources intended for those celebrations could be directed towards campaigns.
“We hear you are celebrating your victories but that is against the party. If one decides to slaughter his cattle for celebration, tell us so that we come for campaign launch not celebrating. Celebrating is not allowed, the president said there is no winner or loser in Zanu PF,” he added.
Mavhenyengwa went on to say there were other District Coordinating Committee (DCC) members who were sleeping on duty and not operating at all saying when meetings are called, only five out of 23 will be in attendance.
“There are other DCCs which are not operating at all, out of 23, you will get only five members attending, so we have asked them to appear before our disciplinary committee and if they are not willing to work they should leave and allow those who want to work for the party to do so. Mwenezi is the worst on that. We went there before elections and after, they were not there,” said Mavhenyengwa.
Speaking at the same event, Zanu PF national secretary for security and Gutu senator Lovemore Matuke said this time around they were going to use scientific means to campaign which will allow Masvingo alone to neutralize Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) Harare votes.
“We told the President to give us Harare, we want to neutralize it with Masvingo alone and other areas will be a bonus. Masvingo should break the record because this is the president’s home area,” said Matuke.
He warned those fueling Bhora Musango that they risk facing disciplinary action as the party will not tolerate detractors from within.
“When we come for healing, we have to make sure that they heal not to add salt to those who are pained. However, those threatening Bhora musango, we will also put them into the bush, we can’t let you do Bhora Musango and leave you there. The disciplinary office should be open because we will have other people on disciplinary over this issue. Those who refuse if we are alive over the next five years will not contest as candidates again.
“After healing, we will ask you chairman to allow us to sit down with church leaders, chiefs, school heads, to approach constituency by constituency and identify semi liberated zones. Our advantage is that we are fighting an opponent without structures, so it’s easier to take people who are structure less and put them where there are structures.
“I know when we enter into elections there are squabbles, so I want to tell you that all those positions you are fighting for are not yours, you are representing the party, we are no longer asking how you got there so don’t praise yourself. So you should go and talk to the people whom you were fighting with because for you to win the general election it’s a result of unity with those people,” added Matuke.
Zanu PF has since called for election rerun in some provinces for local authorities and Masvingo has none though there were a lot of contested results in the province.
