WCOZ demands equal electoral representation for women

GWERU – The Women Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCOZ) has called for political parties to come up with ways that make it possible for females to have as much representation as men in the upcoming general elections.
Speaking at a workshop recently, WCOZ Midlands chapter chairperson Violet Magodo said her organisation had come up with a 5050 campaign mechanism which has seen many political parties appending their signatures.
“As WCOZ, we call for all political parties to create and maintain equal representation in their parties so as to give women adequate room to participate and assume leadership positions in the coming elections.
“We need change in terms of our approach to governance. Parties that will not field candidates in a zebra fashion, we will mobilise our members to reject,” said Magodo.
She however admitted that many parties that had signed the equal representation charter were failing to live up to it.
“It’s unfortunate that some political parties that signed the document are not implementing the recommendations. They are just saying it by word of mouth but are not implementing it on the ground. Women are being side-lined and we don’t want that,” said Magodo.
She urged women to contest for political positions so that they don’t continue lagging behind and being looked down upon.
“We encourage women to participate in politics and economic issues. Through our confidence capacitation programmes, we are helping to elevate the status and role of women in our communities in such institutions as the church, government and at home.
“We are championing a women empowerment agenda because we know that women are facing various problems in society, some of the problems being a direct result of male chauvinism,” she said.
The workshop, held under the theme ‘A Zimbabwean society were women and girls enjoy their rights’, was attended by government representatives, political parties, women with disabilities, women in business and members of other civic groups.local

Violent clashes as Nice Time, Machando tussle for Chirumhanzu Zibagwe

Itai Muzondo
MVUMA – Zanu PF Midlands provincial youth chairperson, Prosper Machando allegedly attacked aspiring Ward 13 councillor Tremendous Musara, accusing him of campaigning for Chrispen Tomu.
Tomu, who is known in business circles by his trade name Nice Time, and Machando are both angling to take over the Chirumhanzu Zibagwe parliamentary seat from first lady Auxillia Mnangagwa who recently announced she was no longer available to serve as MP.
Sources told TellZim News Machando hired youths to attack Musara, accusing him of supporting an opponent.
When contacted for comment, Zanu PF provincial spokesperson, Cornelius Mupereri confirmed the incident but could not shed more light.
“We heard about the issue but we aren’t yet privy to all the facts. Investigations are underway and as Zanu PF, we are saying no to violence be it inter or intra-party. We are really looking forward to a peaceful election,” said Mupereri.
Machando, however, denied being involved in the violence, saying such talk was the work of his detractors who wanted to give Tomu an upper hand in the race.
“I am not a violent person as everybody I have worked with in the party knows. Musara is an unstable politician who is trying to open doors for an MDC-T activist to campaign under the Zanu PF banner. It is for this reason that he is creating all these falsehoods,” Machando said.
In a social media outburst, Musara who reportedly sustained injuries on the wrist during the attack, demanded an apology from his assailants.
“To all those who attacked me, I want you to apologise before I make this matter a police case. If you don’t comply I will not need a witness, Nice Time shop security cameras have all the evidence I need so please, do as I say and I give you 24 hours,” reads Musara’s message.politics

Chiredzi war vets back Team Nhaka Yedu

CHIREDZI – War Veterans here last week endorsed Team Nhaka Yedu in a last ditch desperate bid to sideline alleged G40 MPs ahead of primary elections this Sunday.
All the MPs in Chiredzi; Darlington Chiwa, Kallisto Gwanetsa, Denford Masiya and Robert Mukwena were linked to the vanquished G40 faction but fervent attempts to get them expelled from the party after Operation Restore Legacy drew blanks.
Last week, Chiredzi district war veterans secretary general, Killiot Mukanya openly threw his weight behind Team Nhaka Yedu which includes Farai Musikavanhu (Chiredzi West), Roy Bhila (Chiredzi North), Obert Ngwenya (Ward 2 Urban) Aliginia Samson (women’s quota) and Francis Nhando (senator).
Speaking during a meeting held in Section 28, Triangle, Mukanya said it was high time people dumped ‘grocery MPs’ and moved for something better.
“We need to teach you how to vote properly for better leaders as votes are more powerful than even bullet. Be cautious when electing your leaders.
“We support people with a vision, not those who buy beer and drinks for the people. We need someone who constructs permanent structures like bridges and schools. Musikavanhu and Bhila constructed a block at Kushinga Primary School and also at Batanai. Musikavanhu had also wanted to construct a bridge but was let down by people who have no brains,” said Mukanya.
The event was attended by many people including Musikavanhu, Bhila, Samson, who is Bhila’s mother-in-law, and Obert Ngwenya.
The victorious Team Lacoste camp here has been divided due to political misunderstandings, with provincial political commissar Jevas Masosota, who is vying for Chiredzi East parliamentary seat, taking sides in the other areas.
He is backing Ronald Ndava for Chiredzi North, Francis Moyo for Chiredzi West, Ailes Baloyi for Chiredzi South and Titus Maluleke who is Ndava’s father-in-law.
Chiredzi North MP Mukwena is lying low and is not on the list of contestants as he reportedly refused to apply.
Many people say he is contemplating joining the National Patriotic Front (NPF) which is led by Ambrose Mutinhiri.politics

Daring school heads challenge bigwigs in Bikita, Chivi

Austin Hakunavanhu

Jenya High School head Austin Hakunavanhu and his Pamushana High counterpart, Johnson Madhuku are some of the few practicing teachers who have made it onto the list of Zanu PF candidates cleared to take part in the party’s primary elections this Sunday.
Madhuku will contest for the right to represent Zanu PF in Bikita East while Hakunavanhu will fight it out to stand in Chivi Central on the ruling party’s ticket come the general elections expected in July this year.
In Bikita East, Madamombe High School head Josiah Sithole will also be hoping to wriggle his way past a coterie of other cadres who also want to take the parliamentary seat left by Jeppy Jaboon who was fired from the party last year.
The three ambitious school heads come as underdogs but judging from hindsight, they might spring a surprise in their respective constituencies since the ruling party’s primaries have produced a fair share of unprecedented outcomes in the past.
The three have vast experience in school administration, boasting fairly remarkable leadership records in the National Association of Secondary School Heads (NASH).
Madhuku is the reigning NASH president, Hakunavanhu is the organisation’s Chivi district chairperson and Sithole is the provincial treasurer.
Their involvement with the ruling party, as is the case with Sithole, had all along been more flirtatious than apparent, probably due to the difficulties involved in striking a fine balancing act between one’s professional life and political ambition.
A breakthrough for Sithole entails defeating a host of other candidates; Augustine Tirivangani, Charles Dziro, Universter Mukwena, Clifford Mazodze, Wilson Makonya as well as former police boss and successful sugarcane farmer, Edmore Veterai.
It is also a crowded house in Chivi Central where five other competitors have been given the greenlight to contest, the most recognisable among them being Zanu PF national secretary for legal affairs and former MP Paul Mangwana, as well as the incumbent MP, Ephraim Gwanongodza.
Other candidates vying for the party ticket in Chivi Central are Priscilla Pondo, former MP Albert Chamwadoro and former soldier, Rtd Col Manasa Mahapa.
Chivi is notorious for shuffling out MPs every five years, but it remains to be seen whether or not Gwanongodza will be able to defy the precedent by retaining his seat and serving for a second consecutive term.
In Bikita East, the now late Kennedy Matimba, who had been MP since 2005, passed away on Tuesday April 17 after a short illness, leaving Madhuku to tussle it out against Douglas Ravasingadi, Ndonde Pedzisai and Oliver Mamombe.politics

Chabaya uses CDF to strengthen hand in Bikita East?

Beauty Chabaya

BIKITA – The incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for Bikita West constituency, Beauty Chabaya is utilising the Community Development Fund (CDF) in a way that strengthens her chances of securing re-election.
Chabaya won the parliamentary seat in a by-election that was held in January last year after the then MP Munyaradzi Kereke was convicted and imprisoned for rape.
Chabaya has so far commissioned five boreholes and has built a foot bridge in Mungezi village under Chief Budzi using the funds availed to some MPs earlier this year.
The boreholes have been drilled in Munyika Village under chief Mupakwa, Chapwanya village under Chief Mukanganwi, and the other three were drilled in Chief Mazungunye’s area.
The legislator said despite her tenure of office being relatively short, she still wanted to make a mark in Bikita East before the next polls.
She said if given a second chance in office, she would make sure all the projects that have been planned are implemented in full.
“My term in office has been short but despite that, I have made vast developments in the area. One of the problems that we are facing as a constituency is shortage of water so I have constructively used my CDF to drill boreholes in the most affected areas. If given another chance to serve, I would do much more for the people of Bikita East,” said Chabaya.
She said projects like poultry production and fish farming could transform the lives of many women in the constituency.

ZVISHAVANE – Nine-year-old Makanaka Sibanda, a grade 3 pupil at Shabani Primary School, has left her contemporaries awed after winning a ZB bank essay writing competition for 2017.
As a result of her efforts, Makanaka – who was eight-years-old when she wrote her winning essay – has become US$150 richer and has earned US$100 for her school.
She beat all other pupils of her age who are in the ZB bank administrative region. These include Zvishavane, Masvingo, Mberengwa, some parts of Chirumhanzu, Chiredzi, Nyika, Mwenezi and Chivi districts.
Speaking to TellZim News, ZB bank Zvishavane branch manager, Titus Mzondo said he was very impressed by the performance of children from Zvishavane schools.
“I am very much delighted because top prizes in this competition came to participants in Zvishavane. The competition was divided into four categories in all of the seven ZB administrative regions. The first was for the children and it is Makanaka Sibanda who won.
“Children were asked to write an essay on the question ‘What does sustainable food production mean to you?’ The second category was of the juniors which was also won in Zvishavane by Sikhululekile Mpofu of Shabanie Mine School.
“The third and fourth categories were for secondary pupils and they were both won by Pamushana High School (of Bikita),” said Mzondo. education

Zvishavane musician praises piracy

Admire Sibanda(Chief Shumba)

ZVISHAVANE – Musician Admire Sibanda, popularly known as Chief Shumba, has urged pirates to copy and sell his music as that would make him more popular.
Sibanda said the shortage of music marketing companies made the few available ones concentrate on already established artists thereby giving new comers a raw deal.
He told TellZim News that piracy was the only way struggling upcoming musicians could rise to fame although many in the music industry do not agree with him.
Sibanda recently released his 4th album since his shift from gospel music to hwenje.
“Piracy has been good to me and now, I can feel that I have risen to another level. Piracy has been the only source of publicity that we have as musicians from this small mining town of Zvishavane,” Sibanda said.
“I know that some famous musicians in the industry will not agree with me but I desperately need piracy now so that whatever fame I have already established can improve. I want pirates to help me go international,” Sibanda said.
Chief Shumba gained popularity after he released his song ‘Mabvaru’, which is an anthem for local football club Shabanie Mine.entertainment

ZVISHAVANE – Gospel musician Attalia Nsingo Parehwa launched her new album at YA FM Radio Park on April 07 during an occasion that confirmed the young singer as one of the most promising female gospel artists in the country.
Titled Ndakasarudza, the album, which comprises 12 tracks, was launched in the presence of many people including aspiring Zvishavane-Ngezi Member of Parliament (MP) Lewis Matutu who chipped in with US$500.
Others who graced the occasion are artists Praise Govera, Gamuchirai Magadzire, Sandra Chirenje and YA FM presenter Admire Nago.
Reading a prepared speech on behalf of the minister of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation Kazembe Kazembe who was supposed to be the guest of honour, Midlands Provincial Arts Culture and Heritage Officer, Reward Shockson committed government support for the gospel industry.
“While in most cases a prophet is without honour among his own people, it is different for Attalia who has a legion of fans in Zvishavane and is also growing a fan base around the country,” he said.
He said the arts were an important vehicle of communication that cut across the racial, social, cultural and economic divide.
The minister also urged members of the public to support the growth of the music industry by buying legitimately released music and by shunning piracy.
The minister bought the new album for US$500, Govera bought it for $550, and Zvishavane business woman Melody Tsiga – popularly known as Mai Isheanopa – bought the disc for US$200 while Admire Nago bought it for US$120.entertainment

Bvaru Bvaru, Ngezi encounter excites despite drama

Bvaru bvaru  players celebrate during the match

ZVISHAVANE – There was drama at Maglass Stadium on Sunday after journalists were forced to pay to cover the match between Shabanie FC and Ngezi Platinum Stars FC.
Mukudzei Chingwere of The Herald, Terry Madyauta of NewsDay and many other journalists were not allowed to get into the stadium on account of failing to produce Premier Soccer League (PSL) accreditation cards.
PSL has however came under fire for failing to process the accreditations for sports journalists who applied as far back as February.
Present during the match was PSL official Rodwell Thabe who, despite being well aware with the challenges at his organisation, surprised many people when he ruled that all those without the accreditation must pay entry fees.
Thabe later got involved in a serious altercation with Ngezi Platinum Stars team photographer Calvin Mavhunga who was video recording the match.
This was after he dictated that only those awarded the tender to broadcast the PSL matches could video-record the match.
Mavhunga tried, in vain, to explain that he was recording for the team and not for broadcasting, leading to the flaring of tempers and later to the intervention of Bvaru Bvaru public relations officer Weston Wesley who managed to make peace.
Wesley himself expressed disappointment at the accreditation debacle, saying people had probably ignored the list of journalists he had prepared for them to allow into the stadium to cover the match.
Regardless of these hiccups, the match itself was entertaining, with Bvaru Bvaru giving Madamburo a good run for their money.
The visitors drew first blood in the 37th minute through a Terrence Dzukamanja header but the hosts came back from the breather a determined side and managed to dominate the whole of the second half.
For their efforts, the hosts were rewarded in the 91st minute after David Temwanjira headed home an Ally Maliselo corner kick to equalise.sport
