30 Jan 2017 – ZAKA – Young welterweight boxer, Freeman Mabvonge, from Muchechetere High School, recently scooped bronze in African United Southern Countries Region 5 under 20 youth games competition held in Luanda, Angola.
Gold was taken by a South African boxer while silver went to Angola.
The 18-year-old Mabvonge, who was representing Zimbabwe and Masvingo province, managed to scoop the medal after engaging in more than 20 matches but his fellow seven brethren team mates failed to reach that far.
“I was defeated in the semi-finals where I came third and won my bronze medal. Gold was taken by a guy from South Africa and silver went to a boxer from the host country,” said Mabvonge.
Mabvonge won gold medals three consecutive times in the Zimbabwe National Youth games that were hosted in Masvingo, Mutare and Chinhoyi where the selection process for the team that went to Angola was done. Mabvonge is currently preparing for the August 23 Youth Games ahead of zone 5 competitions to be held in Botswana.
“I am currently preparing for the youth games to be held on the 23 August ahead of the Zone Five competitions in Botswana,” said Mabvonge.
When in Zaka, Mabvonge trains in an open space as he has no proper training equipment at home though he gets some assistance from Muchechetere school head, Melody Moyo.
On their visit to Luanda, he was trained by Alexander Kwangwari from Chitungwiza.
The confident young boxer said he dreams of being an international boxer.
“I really want to be like (Charles) Manyuchi, turning boxing into my career and ultimately being an international boxer,” said Mabvonge.news
