Masvingo – The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) 4 Infantry Brigade last week extended its helping hand to the Mucheke Old People’s Home where they spent three days carrying out various projects aimed at improving conditions at the institution.
Among the many activities carried out by members of the army from 4 Brigade include painting the inmates’ quarters, repairing and upgrading electrical installations as well as gardening.
Most notably, members of the military’s medical team spend several hours diagnosing and giving treatment to all ailing inmates and other members of the community.
Senior medical officer, Major Magadzire Matsvaire, attended every patient, giving free treatment.
Recently, members of the 4 Infantry Brigade, who have earned a lot of respect and praise for their yearly social responsibility programmes, commissioned a new classroom block they built at Ndarama High School as part of commemorating the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.
Speaking at the institution during a luncheon hosted by the army at the end of the programme, Commander 4 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Exsebious Tshuma stressed the importance of social responsibility.
“We are pleased by the work that has been done here; the renovations that have been done on the walls, painting, gardening and electrical repairs. We realised that some of the people here cannot go to the stadium for the Defence Forces Day celebration so we saw it necessary to be with them today,” said Brigadier General Tshuma.
He also made a commitment to continue helping vulnerable and needy members of society as well as provide necessary intervention where the army’s assistance is needed.
“We will be in touch so that we give all the necessary help. We have artisans who are ready to come and fix any place that needs to be fixed if the resources are available; paints and electrical items,” Brigadier General Tshuma said.
Mucheke Old People’s Home administrator, Joseph Phiri said members of the public must learn the 4 Infantry Brigade and assist the needy.
“Today is a special day to us and the old people we have here. Besides food, our rooms have been nicely painted. To Zimbabweans, please bring all that you have like clothes you no longer use, they will be of a great importance here,” he said.
Other community assistance projects done by the Defence Forces this year include the building of a classroom at Mutonhori and the construction of Chingwizi Clinic in Naunetsi Ranch. The clinic was officially handed to the community by ZDF Commander, General Constantino Guveya Nyikadzino Chiwenga on August 1 this year.news
