03 April 2017, ZVISHAVANE – In a bid to reduce the scourge of crime in Zvishavane and Mberengwa administrative districts, police have issued a temporary prohibition notice barring members of the public from possessing such weapons as axes, machetes, knives or swords.
Although Midlands provincial acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende did not pick her phone for comment, the move is expected to have a huge impact on crime reduction efforts in the two districts.
The order, issued in terms of Section 14 (1) (A) (B) of the Public Order and Security Act (Posa) [Chapter 11:17], affects public places or gatherings in Zvishavane CBD as well as business centres and townships dotted around the two districts.
This follows a vocal public outcry over violent armed criminal cases such as manslaughter, theft, as well as public fights reported in those areas recently.
“The temporary prohibition order shall cover a period not exceeding three months that is from the 20th of March 2017 to the 19th of June 2017. All stakeholders are accordingly advised,” reads part of the notice.local
