Vendor threatens council officials with knobkerrie

MWENEZI- Two Mwenezi Rural District
Council (RDC) Environmental Monitors (EMs) had to run for their dear lives
after a vendor whom they had cornered at Rutenga Growth Point drew a knobkerrie
from his banana cart and charged towards them.

On
Tuesday, March 23, Rutenga Growth Point business owners and passersby had a
free spectacle as council officials had to scour for cover.

Vengai
Chauke, who was plying his trade under an Amarula tree which is adjacent to
Chingwanga supermarket, was approached by the EMs officers who were trying to
confiscate his cart.

The EMs
officers successfully took Chauke’s cart and as they were pushing it towards
the council offices, Chauke charged towards them armed with a knobkerrie and
managed to recover his cart.

Chauke
was shouting that he was trying to make an honest living by selling his bananas
and council officials should leave him alone.

“I have
not stolen anything from anyone. I am trying to earn an honest living so why
are you treating me like I am a thief?

“Don’t
mess with me you do not know what I am capable of,” shouted Chauke.

Contacted
for a comment over the duties of EMs, Mwenezi RDC Agriculture and Environmental
executive officer, Kudzai Sirewu said besides monitoring various environmental
issues, EMs are also helping in the maintenance of sanity around growth points
to ensure that vendors as well operates at designated points.

“In
towns you are aware that the duties of dealing with vendors is reserved for
municipality police.

“Here
in Mwenezi we are saying besides monitoring the environment EMs are also
responsible for helping in maintaining sanity around the growth points and
ensuring that vendors are complying in terms of operating from designated
points,” said Sirewu.

 

Over 200
Rutenga based vendors, whose makeshift structures were destroyed during the
early days of the national lockdown last year as per the order from the central
government, had been stranded as the local authority is yet to erect structures
for them to operate from.

So far,
only the fruits and vegetable market which accommodates less than half of the
affected is the only one functioning while the rest of other informal traders
are yet to have proper operating places.

This
has forced many to open markets at their residential areas while some continue
to ply their trades at undesignated points which are sprouting around Rutenga
Growth Point.

MASVINGO- Women’s Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) in collaboration with Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) recently held a constitution hub meeting educating the electorate and women in marginalized communities on electoral processes. 

ZEC district elections officer, Gertrude Murumbi who was the guest speaker at the meeting said they had intensified voter education that raises awareness for people who live in the rural areas on how to conduct the voting processes.

“Voters education is just a way of informing people on how to vote and the necessary requirements needed to carry out the voting processes, especially those in the rural areas as they do not have much access to such information,” said Murumbi.

Murumbi also revealed that they were partnering Henry Murray and had introduced sign language during their voter education awareness campaigns. 

 “Some teachers at Henry Murray are playing a pivotal role in helping us as ZEC to educate the deaf people using sign language interpretation and this also helps the electorate to understand the voting requirements and procedures,” said Murumbi.

Some participants at the meeting called upon ZEC to provide a braille ballot paper so as to reduce the number of assisted voters who usually cry foul of having their vote manipulated. 

“Braille must be used so that the blind people can also exercise their voting rights because some do not trust their aides. They allege those people might change their votes or unscrupulously make them vote for a contestant whom they don’t like,” said a participant.

WCoZ Masvingo chapter Chairperson Joyce Mhungu beseeched ZEC to engage some women organizations to do voter education especially in marginalized communities.

“We would really appreciate if ZEC invite some organizations that are willing to do voter education and it would be nice if women rights advocacy groups work hand in hand with ZEC as this can actually empower some women,” said Mhungu. 

ZEC has resumed electoral activities and voter registration is set to commence on April, 01, 2021.

City of Masvingo has decided to lease
out Charles Austin theatre and ordered Masvingo Theatre and Arts Club to vacate
the premises and wind up their activities by June 30, 2021, TellZim News has
learnt.

Council decided to evict Masvingo
Theatre and Arts from the Charles Austin theatre premises on the grounds that it
has allegedly turned the premises into a brothel.

“It has always be on lease for the
purpose of theatre and arts but our greatest worry as local authority is about
the things that were happening there, we can’t sit and watch the place being
turned into a brothel,” said City of Masvingo Acting Town Clerk Edward
Makaratirwa. 

Chairperson of the Charles Austin
Theatre club, Charles Munganasa, dismissed the brothel allegations, lambasted
and dared Mukaratirwa to present evidence to his claims.

“The Town Clerk (Mukaratirwa) has an
old software of assuming that where ever there is a youth gathering there are
acts of immoralities. The Town Clerk does not have any evidence on what he is
saying,” said Munganasa.

He further alleged that council is
taking advantage of owning the premises but neglecting its duties and said the
local authority should give the theatre club a thumbs up for producing prominent
artists in the country.

“The council should cherish us for the
good works that we have done. We have produced very good artists such as
Belinda Potsi, current Miss Tourism Zimbabwe, Garry Mapanzure among others,”
said Munganasa.

He said that the council was now
betraying the theatre artists who were led by the late Doug Hill.

It is said that Hill donated the
theatre to council but the council was negating the artists and making the
venue more of a business venture.

“There is an agreement between the two
parties, so they should first tell us where we breached the first agreement and
we can start talking about eviction from there,” said Munganasa.

Mutare’s Dangamvura water pipeline project to miss April deadline

MUTARE- The Covid-19
pandemic, which plunged the country into different stages of national
lockdowns, has delayed progress on the much awaited Christmas Pass- Dangamvura
water pipeline project which has been reported to be above 60 percent complete
after the city council had initially set April 2021 as the deadline for
completion.

If completed, the Christmas Pass-Dangamvura water pipeline
project would address water woes in Dangamvura high density suburb, Fernvalley
and Industrial area where residents and businesses have been bearing the brunt
of water shortages for nearly 2 decades.

City of Mutare director of engineering and technical
services Maxwell Karenyi told TellZim News that the project was above 60
percent and was delayed by the Covid-19 induced lockdowns.

“Last year we received GRP pipes which covers a
distance of 2 100 meters at a cost of about US$345 000.

“When the project was initially started in 2007 there
was an under design by the engineers who were undertaking the works. When we
were checking the design we realised that if we commission the project with
those pipes they will end up bursting.

“We removed the pipes that were laid up in sections
where they may burst under pressure and we are now relaying them where they can
withstand the pressure. Yes there was an error on the initial technical team
which undertook the project but we have since rectified it,” said Karenyi.

He said they were waiting for the Zim Fund project to
deliver an assortment of steel pipes whilst council was selling some pieces of
land in order to raise the outstanding balance needed to complete the
Dangamvura water pipeline project.

“Council is supposed to raise over US$500 000 in order
to complete the project and so far has since raised US$155 000 which has been
disbursed. We have already resolved to sell some pieces of land so we can
finance the Dangamvura water project. Some people we sold land to have failed
to pay up due to Covid-19 which has affected many businesses.

“We are hoping that by April 2021 the Zim Fund project
should have delivered the steel pipes and council should have raised US $380
000 that we are left with. That is why we are now borrowing money since
government has approved our borrowing powers after the current management
managed to clear council arrears,” said Karenyi.

The Zim Fund Project, which is being administered by African
Development Bank, is running in local authorities which includes Chitungwiza,
Chegutu, Kwekwe, Masvingo and Mutare.

GUTU- A man from Mafukidze
village under Chief Chimombe in Gutu, was fatally struck by a log for allegedly
taking a side, while trying to make peace between two men who were having a
misunderstanding.

Masvingo
provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dhewa confirmed the death of
Tafadzwa Chinongoza saying they had received the report and the matter was now
before the courts.

“We
received a report of a Gutu man who died due to injuries sustained when he was
struck for interfering in a fight on March 6. However, the case is now at court
for prosecution”, said Dhewa.

It is
alleged that on March 06, 2021 at around 7pm, Chinongoza left his home headed
to Chomungai Business Centre.

Upon
arrival, he found Fanwell Maburutse from Mashingaidze village under chief
Chimombe and Simbarashe Chikango who resides in Mushaya village under chief
Nyamande, quarreling over an undisclosed issue and tried to make peace amongst
the two.

Chinongoza
tried to separate the two but he was embroiled in the misunderstanding and
ended ganging up on Chikango.

Realising
that he was outnumbered, Chikango took to his feet and was pursued by
Chinongoza and Maburutse towards the backyard of Chomunga New Generation Shop.

Chikango
then took a log from a fire stake and hit Chinongoza once on the head.

Chinongoza
fell on the ground helplessly and Chikango continued to
assault him all over the body.

A
police report was made by Chinongoza the following day at Bhasera Police
station, leading to the arrest of Chikango.

Chinongoza
proceeded to seek medical attention at Chimombe rural clinic where he was
transferred to Gutu Mission Hospital.

His
condition however worsened and was transferred to Masvingo Provincial Hospital.

His
health continued to deteriorate and was transferred to United Bulawayo Hospital
where he died upon admission on March 11, 2021.

Social Economic Action Transformation
for Humanity (SEATH) in conjunction with Chosen Generation (CG) and Zimbabwe
Youth Relief and Development Trust (ZIMYORD) last week donated clothes to
disabled squatters living in shacks at Mucheke bus terminus.

The disabled squatters have been living
at Mucheke bus terminus for close to a decade with the authorities turning a
blind eye on their plight.

SEATH, CG and ZIMYORD officials said
they found it fit to help the disadvantaged in the community calling on the
government to chip in and provide shelter for the disabled squatters.

“These people have been ignored for far
too long and it is our hope that the government will chip in and provide proper
shelter for them.

“The donation we made was the little we
could do so that they do not feel isolated or abandoned.

“You find that the squatters have
survived a lot of the years and the Covid-19 pandemic threatens their existence
hence the need to take appropriate actions now,” said SEATH founder Tendai
Mafuka.

The disabled squatters survive from
handouts and begging in the streets.

One of the beneficiaries who found a
home at the Mucheke bus terminus because he was abandoned by relatives when his
parents died while he was still young said he was stigmatized because of his
epileptic condition.

“I ran away from home because all my
parents passed away when I was young and no one wanted to take care of me
because I suffer from epilepsy.

“I found it easy here in the streets
where I can beg for money to buy my medication and to buy food.

“The donation is a sign that there are
people out there who still care about us,” said the beneficiary.

The ambassador of young people with
disabilities and the director of Chosen Generation Vimbai Chese expressed
gratitude towards the donations saying they go a long way in alleviating some
of the challenges faced by the disadvantaged people in society.

find you dear readers in good health but just a reminder, yakabhurwa spread the
message kkkk. I am not a soccer fan but I have come to respect the fact that
some people support their football teams like some support Zanu PF and MDC. I
am sure that all Manchester United fans are hoping that vanowana yavanobhurawo
as a consolation because the shame is just too much. Why is it that people are
laughing at Manchester United as if it is the first team to be trounced?
Kubhura nekubhurwa kunowanikwa.

There
are still a lot of people including Mapombi who still do not know kuti mubhuri
nemubhurwi in the 2018 elections aiva ani. Some say Chamisa akabhura ED but ZEC
gave us a different result while others believe that the young man akabhurwa
and the results we got from ZEC were very accurate. I will not delve much into
this matter because I know it is very sensitive and machinja are still hurting
a lot over the result.  People must come
to terms with the reality that once there is a race, there is bound to be a
winner and a loser. Both parties must accept the result in the end and be able
to live with it. So I say to all Manchester United fans, do not despair for the
misery inflicted upon yourselves and club will come to pass.

I am
happy that our beloved First Lady was in town. Yes, I mean amai vedu
vanotichengetera baba. Our angel of hope, Auxillia Mnangagwa. This is the woman
whose husband is getting his Covid-19 jab in Victoria Falls. I do not know why
ED chose to get jabbed in Vic Falls and not in Harare or kuno kuMasvingo like
what Matemadanda did. Masvingo ine musvo wemusangano so everything should start
here in Masvingo. Maybe ED chose Vic Falls because he was given freedom of the
city status there. Plus zvinhu zveHarare zvine chitsotsi too much. You can
never trust the jab administered in Harare kkkk. Hararians are like the
Chinese, unoisirwa mvura ukanzi its vaccine. So, Auxillia was cooking her
traditional foods at Masvingo Poly and I really have nothing against
traditional foods. But shuwa Auxillia angabva Harare kuzongoona mashazhare
akabikwa ane dovi, mufushwa, minyemba and other foods we eat on daily basis.
The resources used on the trip could have been used to buy food for vana
Mapombi tabaikwa with rotten bananas and maputi.

 

Traditional
foods are the reason why the late president Mugabe managed to live so long and
had a vision to get to 100 years but his vision was cut short by his comrades
who usurped power from him and threw him into serious stress mode which led him
to his grave before realizing his vision. Mugabe aingoga kusvika muzana chete
and he did not care about anything else. The economy tanked and he just had his
eyes on age 100. So I hope ED is not being pampered with traditional foods
because to be honest hatidi zvekunetswa kkkk. Munhu ngaadye fast foods kuti
akasire kubaya. I am not saying that ED anofanira kubaya because chinouraya
inguva. Rest in Peace Cde Joseph Magufuli. I think someone was happy to receive
news on the death of Magufuli because dzanga dzanyanyisa kugara munyika. Ko Cde
Tongombeya vanga vasingagari pasi. It was like he had thorns on his back and he
was always in the air travelling chopping the tax payers money.

I don’t
know why the good are always the ones dying kuchisara vanotishungurudza ava. In
Zimbabwe we can only wish death on our tormentors because it is the only
recourse we have. We have tried elections and they have failed. Covid-19 came
and it still missed the target. Some people pray daily for God to take vana
Emmerson and unfortunately the Almighty gives people time to repent before he
takes them home. Vana Magufuli fought their fights and he was mourned by the
whole country. I could see people wailing in the streets saying they had been
robbed of a true statesman. Well who will dispute that because we all know what
Magufuli did when he got into office? There was no room for incompetence in the
Magufuli administration and Mapombi can safely say Tanzania and Africa at large
have been robbed of a great man. Magufuli did not take unnecessary foreign
trips to cut on government expenditure. He put Tanzania first and managed to
transform his country into a lower middle income economy. Isu kuno vana Mapombi
takangomirira Vision 2030 kkkk.

The
problem with Zimbabwe is that we do a major disservice to ourselves. How are we
ever going to achieve anything without proper people representation? How can a
political party just fire representatives of the people just like that? The
country has suspended all electoral activities indefinitely and yet we still
allow the wanton recall of voted representatives because of petty issues. If
the country is not yet ready for by-elections then we should not let political
parties recall elected members. Mapombi does not believe in representation
democracy because it underlies the absence of the people. Democracy can only
exist in the presence of the people and not in the representatives of the
people. But since we are a representative democracy, we have to make sure that
our people are represented not this circus we are seeing. What will happen to
those constituencies that had their elected representatives recalled from
councils and parliament? Recently, the most vibrant legislator Tendai Biti, who
kept the Zanu PF goons on their feet was recalled from parliament by one
Chikanda. How can a nonentity like Chikanda remove Biti from parliament at a
time like this? Chikanda chei chaicho chimuchinda ichi. Chikanda chemvuu
chaicho kkkk. We are not going anywhere as a country I
tell you. Biti was a very important cog in that Parliament and without him
there will be no one to hold the government to account.

We
should not let this circus take root in our politics. This makes us a laughing
stock on every turn. How can someone arohwa nekangopisa just think of recalling
an Honorable Member of Parliament and is allowed to do so. The people must be
the only ones who should be allowed to recall their MP or councillor and not
some stupid Chikanda guy or Mwonzora for that matter. The speaker of Parliament
must not just take stupid directives from stupid people like Chikanda and his
so called PDP party whose actions turn the August House into a kindergarten. We
need to be serious as a country and political parties. People should not be
taken for granted. There should be tighter conditions put in place to stop such
madness from happening. To just say a member has stopped serving the interests
of his or her party are not sufficient grounds to recall an elected official.
After all, they are not there to serve the interests of the political parties
but the people. This madness must stop or Mapombi anouya kuzobhura vanhu
especially vana Chikanda imi. Makanditsamwisa mhani vanhu imi. I have said
enough regai zvangu ndinokanga maputi angu for lunch. Mboko imboko.

wood furnishers and greases among other products.

The company has over 10 years in
business and has evolved over time to become a household name in Masvingo and
beyond through its quality products.

Katsande
said companies must boost production so as to cut the country’s import bill.

“Our passion is to revive this industry; we cannot be
importers of everything while we can produce our own. We can produce a number
of goods that are being imported now and I don’t see why supermarkets and
others should continue importing while we can produce.

“Currently we supply a number of
local secondary schools, tertiary institutions, government ministries and many
other small organizations and given a chance we would want to supply across
Zimbabwe and even export some of our products.

“Our
aim now is to foster competition which is good for the revival of the manufacturing
industry in Zimbabwe and our target is to supply
big wholesales like N.Richards Group and others,” said Katsande.

He said his company thrives to
provide a
one stop shopping experience to customers.

“We
want to be partners in the development of this country through providing
competitive products and services to satisfy our customers.

“Everyone
has a role to play in developing and reviving this country’s economic fortunes.
If we all put our hands on deck, no one will be left behind as we push towards

Masvingo
Provincial Medical Director (PMD) Dr Amadeus Shamhu has said the province has
recorded a 60 percent Covid-19 vaccination rate of its health work force of 6
000 where 3 600 received the Chinese SinoPharm jab in the first round phase of
the vaccine roll out programme.

Presenting
the province’s Covid-19 situation and vaccine uptake before the Zanu PF
Masvingo Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) meeting last Saturday, Dr
Shamhu said the situation has been encouraging but bemoaned misinformation as
the biggest impediment to the success of the programme.

“We received
about 22 000 doses of the SinoPharm vaccine which was enough to vaccinate 11
000 frontline workers in the first phase. I must report that we have about 6
000 frontline health workers in the province and we have so far managed to
vaccinate about 3 600 of them.

“That
makes up for about 60 percent of the population. We started the vaccination in
the province on February 22 and we have started the rolling out of the second
dose.

“As you
know the SinoPharm vaccine is administered in two doses with the first and
second separated with 28 days,” said Dr Shamhu.

He
called on Zanu PF officials to lead from the front to spread accurate
information that the SinoPharm Covid-19 vaccine was safe and dispel
misinformation.

Dr
Shamhu said the Covid-19 cases in the province were dropping and so was the
number of new infections.

“Our
active cases are on the decline and we are recording relatively low positive
cases. We last recorded a Covid-19 related death on February 13, 2021 and I would
say that is a success story for the province.

“We
have a total cumulative infection rate of 2 367 cases and 66 deaths. As at March
19, the province had 19 active cases and they are significantly dropping,” said
Dr Shamhu.

While
football fans are excited about the resumption of the world’s most beautiful
game, Masvingo United football club (FC) seems to have lost all hope of
securing a sponsorship deal for the 2021 campaign.

Although
the Division One leagues are not going to get the first nod to start, it is
clear that they will be the next in line after Premier Soccer League (PSL)
resumes.

However,
Una Una as Masvingo United is popularly known have settled for ‘begging’ style
to fund the club as sponsors and local corporates are not forthcoming.

Club
chairperson, Hubert Fidze who was optimistic of a bright future when he assumed
office has accepted defeat on the part of securing a sponsorship deal.

“The
sponsor of the team will be the community and the community will help by
raising the funds so that the team will be able to play their games without any
problems. Besides the disbursement from Zifa our players didn’t receive
anything during the lockdown period,’’ said Fidze.

With
these conditions in place, it might be a mammoth task for head coach Ezekiel
Mutoda to keep and assemble quality players who can compete for the top spot.

Players
who had signed for Una Una before Covid-19 struck were paid an average of $1 700
for a contract of two years.

However,
since games weren’t played, a few weeks ago Zifa wrote to clubs to find common
ground with players who might want to quit or those who would have got offers
elsewhere.

This
might prove to be a ticking time for a confrontation between Una Una players
and the management since the money which they received as signing on fees is
now equivalent to US$20 on the interbank exchange rate.

Fidze
however believes the contracts are still valid and once they get the nod to
train players will flock in although he is not sure of the availability of all
the ‘22’ players whom they signed.

“The
contracts are still valid and I am optimistic the players are ready to get into
the game if Zifa gives us permission to play. We are not sure if some of the
players are still around because of the lockdown.

“We
signed 22 players before and during the lockdown but we are not sure if they
are all round. We will liaise with the technical team,’’ said Fidze.

The
Busmen as Una Una is also known last tasted PSL in 2011 where they played a
howler of a season and were relegated to less decorative D1.

Many
efforts have been made to bring back PSL action to Mucheke Stadium but somehow
the efforts have been blown away.

In
2015, the team missed a glorious chance to have another dance in topflight
football when they had a steady sponsorship but failed to win in Mutoko on the
last day of the season.

However,
with 2021 bringing hosts of financial challenges and obviously no fans in the
stadia, the community will have a mountain to climb when it comes to financing
the club.

While
the US$1.8 million bailout package from Fifa and Caf seem depleted in every
club and Zifa’s coffers, it’s back to square one for clubs to hunt for funding.
