Acting DA Wafion Hlavati

Chivi – Acting District Administrator (DA) Wafios Hlavati has banned witch hunters (tsikamutandas), warning chiefs not to entertain such people whom he accuses of creating divisions in families.
Hlavati recently described tsikamutandas as evil people who leave a trail of destruction in their wake while robbing families of their wealth.
“These tsikamutandas are not welcome in Chivi. They are day light robbers who destroy families. We want peace and harmony not a situation where people are left at each other’s throats because of some nefarious claims.
“Some of them are so young and you wonder where they got the power they claim to possess,” said Hlavati.
He said people were losing their livestock to the dubious witch hunters who often demand payment in return for ‘cleansing homesteads of bad omens and goblins’.
“They are the very evil thing which needs to be cleansed. You cannot come and impose your services on people who never asked for that in the first place.
“Cattle are a valuable asset in our society so for someone to come and perform some ‘magic’ on our people and then demand cattle is criminal. We will not tolerate that in Chivi.
“Hakuna musha usina zvawo. Kana auya atora mombe uye apumha vanhu uroyi vachasara vogarisana sei? For the chiefs in Chivi, I warn them against entertaining such people because if we find out these people are operating in our area, the chief will have to answer,” said Hlavati.local

Care International, axed worker square off

MASVINGO – Leading humanitarian organisation Care International is challenging a National Employment Council (NEC) judgment requiring it to pay Rumbidzai Chikuse over US$4 000 outstanding dues following the termination of her contract.
The case, recorded under case number LC/MS/LRA/APP/50/17 and whose judgment has been reserved, sat in the Masvingo Labour Court Circuit on July 14 2017.
TellZim News is well informed that Care International hired Chikuse on a fixed 10 months contract which they later terminated using a contract clause which states that either parties can terminate the contract on two weeks’ notice.
“Chikuse had been given a 10 months contract which included three months’ probation period but the contract was terminated without reason. She then went to the Labor Court where judgment was granted in her favour.
“Care International, however, does not agree with the judgment as it requires them to pay the former worker over $4 600 for the remaining 9 months of her terminated contract,” a source said.
When contacted for comment, NEC Masvingo representative Lovemore Boorerwa refused to talk about the matter, saying he was not allowed to speak to the media.local

CHIREDZI – Triangle FC are grieving over the passing on of Chipo Dekete, a devoted team fan who passed on last Friday after a short illness.
The team observed a minute of silence in honour of Dekete before their match with Bantu Rovers which they went on to win 1-0 at Gibbo Stadium last Sunday.
After the match, Triangle FC gaffer Taurai Mangwiro said the team was dedicating the victory to their fallen supporter.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to our sister Chipo who was a well-known supporter of our team. We are saddened by that so with this victory, we say may her soul rest in peace,” Mangwiro said.
Tererai Zinyowera another Triangle FC supporter, described Dekete as a passionate fan who would travel to any Triangle FC match using her own resources.
“Chipo was a true Meke supporter. She would travel to as far as Kariba and last time, we were with her in Beitbridge for the match against Tsholotsho,” said Zinyowera.
Triangle FC midfielder, Lameck Nhamo said his experience with the team will never be the same without Dekete cheering him up.
“Life will never be the same at Triangle FC without sister Chipo cheering me up. We both came from Save village,” said Nhamo.
TellZim News learnt that Dekete suffered a short illness and died while receiving traditional medication at her rural home in Save.sport, local

BIKITA – A 14-year-old form two pupil at Silverira Mission High School committed suicide by hanging himself in a dormitory storeroom using his tie and was discovered on Monday, two days after he went missing.
Though no comment could be obtained from school head Albert Maruta and Provincial education Director (PED) Zedius Chitiga by the time of going to print, sources said the boy, identified as Wesley Shuro, hanged self after he was bullied by fellow students.
Another version of the story leading to the suicide said the boy had left a note claiming two prefects (names supplied) had beaten him earlier on and he had decided to hang himself than face more abuse.
When contacted for comment, acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Kudakwashe Dhehwa said he was yet to receive the report.
“I have seen the story circulating on social media but I am yet to receive the report from Bikita,” said Ass Insp Dhewa.
There was yet another version to the story alleging acts of Satanism, after another pupil allegedly produced a three-headed snake and threatened the boy that the snake was going to swallow him.
Shaken by the incident, the boy is said to have decided it was better to commit suicide than having to bear the snake swallowing him alive.local

‘Anointed’ water divides Chivhu couple

…woman severely bashed for throwing it away

Elliot Jinjika

CHIVHU – A man severely assaulted his wife recently after she threw away his bottle of ‘anointed’ water which he was given by a prophet as a solution to infertility, TellZim News has learnt.
The drama occurred at the couple’s residence in Buckernhill suburbs after the husband came home to find his special water missing.
The couple, whose identity has been protected,  has been married for three years but have not had a child, a challenge which, according to sources, forced the man to seek the services of a prophet who gave him the water.
The sources said his wife, however, has always opposed the idea of using anointed water as she strongly doubts the trustworthiness of modern-day prophets.
“Zvekuti takarwa haisi nyaya kwandiri but kuti takarwirei. I do not believe mutuporofita twamazuvano tunoreva nhema, iye ndakamuudza kuti enda hako ikoko asi ini handidi kuona zvinhu zvaunopihwa pano. Anonyeperwa kuti ndini ndine shavi rinoita tisabare vana,” the woman said after she was contacted for comment.
Her husband, on the other hand, refused to shed light on the matter saying he was not comfortable discussing his personal affairs with the media.
“I do not discuss family matters with reporters. Go write whatever you want because I know you are capable of doing that,” he said.
Another source, however, said the woman’s failure to conceive over the past three years had taken its toll on the couple as quarrels were now happening more often than not.local

MWENEZI – Catholics from diverse corners of the province and beyond, last Saturday converged at Sacred Heart High School in Mwenezi, celebrating Father Pauls Wezana’s 10th anniversary at the helm.
The colourful ceremony was graced by the dean of Southern Deanery, Father Samson Mutsvanga as guest and other dignitaries like Frs Patrick Marimazhira and Donald Zvemisha as well as priests and church representatives from elsewhere.
Speakers hailed the 42-year-old Fr Wezana as a dedicated and hardworking cleric whose work continues to be a shining example.
Fr Mutsvanga praised Fr Wezana for his outstanding work which he said was a result of a divine calling.
“Father Wezana’s good works started way beyond 2007. He has and is still serving God with utmost diligence. His calling was not a human mission. It was God’s calling that is evidently bearing fruits,” said Fr Mutsvanga.
On his part, Fr Wezana thanked the Catholic leadership and the faithful for their support and advised school children to be focussed and united for the good of their communities and country.
Born and bred in Sheshe village under Chief Mupata in Gutu, Fr Wezana started his one and half year vocation course at Mazowe Pre-Major Seminary in 1999.
He was ordained in 2007 and he started to administer in Chiredzi at St Peter’s Chikombedzi from where he transferred to St Nicolas’, Holy Trinity Triangle, St Mary’s Nyika, St Monica’s Chikuku in 2009, 2013, 2014 and 2015 respectively.
From St Monica’s Chikuku, he moved to All Saints Rutenga in January 2016 where he is currently ministering.religion

Nine candidates emerge in Zaka Central

0

Brighton Chiseva

At the heart of Zaka district is the most sought after constituency, Zaka Central. The incumbent legislator Paradzai Chakona is indeed tying all his best to make sure he gets another term come 2018.
But that would not be a stroll in the park as nine other candidates are said to be strategically positioning and readying themselves ahead of the much anticipated harmonised elections.
From Zanu PF, James Makiya, Nyaradzo Tachiona, Johanes Chindanya and Kunaka Alfonce and a Svuure are said to be ready to challenge Chakona.
As if to say he is the best candidate, Chakona has since bought a new Benz GL 4Matic and personalised the number plates – ZAKA 1 – which probably means he is the Zaka’s number one candidate. Maybe he is – time will tell.
Besides that infamous incident in China when he led other parliamentarians astray back then, an error of judgement that made him a butt of jokes, Chakona has endeared himself with the electorate for fulfilling some of the promises he made in the run up to the July 31, 2013 elections.
A hostile relationship with Chief Nhema (Rangarirai Bwawanda) also did not deter him as he continued to work with the electorate representing them fairly well in Parliament. At least he contributes during debates in Parliament unlike some of his counterparts from Zaka district.
As for Tachiona, she never lost hope after losing dismally to Chakona in the 2013 Zanu PF primaries, and she is now back with a bang! But being a mother comes with a lot of responsibilities and usually it is not easy to balance the roles of motherhood with the demands of politics.
But Tachiona seems to be managing well as she has risen through the party ranks to become a provincial executive member and she controls some of the structures in Zaka Central.
Being a teacher at a local school might also give her a bit of leverage. Being a woman contesting a rural constituency, however, is not an easy task and it becomes all the more difficult if one does not have enough resources to fund a strong campaign.
Makiya, the other candidate, is said to be enjoying a cordial relationship Chief Nhema who hardly sees eye to eye with Chakona. This may get him (Makiya) all the support to oust the incumbent legislator.
He can count on the fact that the electorate might not want to be seen as snubbing their chief’s preferred candidate. He stands to gain if he capitalises on that relationship and fully exploits it to his advantage.
The Majority of Zaka Central’s wards are in Chief Ndanga area and since Makiya sponsors the Chief Ndanga trophy, this might be his biggest advantage ahead of other candidates.
Being a lawyer might also help Makiya to get the better of Chakona probably in terms of strategising though Chakona himself cannot be underrated as he is an eloquent intellectual himself.
Kunaka is said to be close to Chief Nhema too and both Kunaka and Makiya hail from Ward 14 but Kunaka seems to have not covered as much ground so far, and the same goes for Chindanya and Svuure.
The ultimate winner will face candidates from MDC-T, PDP and RDZ at the general elections.
From MDC-T, James Mushonga, Francis Binza, Alois Zimudzi and Paul Vurayai are said to be interested. Mushonga outmatched Vurayai in 2013 before he was sent packing by Chakona on the July 31, 2013 harmonised elections.
Both Vurayi and Mushonga are said to be interested in trying their luck once again. They will battle it out with Zimudzi, Binza.  Zimudzi is a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in the faculty of medicine. It is said he was once Tsvangirai’s personal assistant and is based in Harare.
Vurayai is a lawyer by profession and was in COPAC team during the constitution making process in 2012 and is a businessman while Binza hails from ward 14 and is a businessman based in Harare.
Though he comes from Zaka, he is not so popular and if he wants to test the waters he has a lot of work to do since 2018 is around the corner.  Zimudzi is credited for assisting the MDC-T victims that were petrol bombed at Jerera growth point in 2008.
Mushonga is the talk of Jerera and Zaka in the MDC camp. He is said to be humble and mixes and mingles with the electorate more frequently than any other person in MDC-T. He even drinks traditional beer with them but it seems he is fast forgetting to campaign.
Ward 19 councillor Peter Imbayarwo’s name is also among the other interested candidates though he has dismissed it as ‘a mere rumour’. Imbabyarwo is the only opposition councillor in the Zanu PF dominated Zaka Rural District Council (RDC).
Suppose he succumbs to pressure from the electorate and accept to contest for the constituency, Imbayarwo might stand a better chance.
Former Zaka Central MP Harrison Mudzuri is said to be eyeing a comeback under PDP though some suggest that he now wants to contest for the position of councillor.
Joseph Chipfumo is also said to be eyeing the same constituency under the RDZ ticket. He is hardly known though.
Chipfumo is said to be a gold miner and is a holder of a mining certificate from the Zimbabwe School of Mines.
Whatever happens and whoever wins primaries of any of the political parties will not have an easy win in the general election as the field promises to be more competitive than ever before. For contributions e-mail

Sandon Academy pupils in China

TellZim Reporter

GUTU – While other ordinary schools often organise trips to places like Victoria Fall, Kariba, Chinhoyi Caves and other local destinations, the extraordinary Sandon Academy recently took its pupils to China on an educational trip.
Sandon Academy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Lovemore Matuke said the trip was meant to inspire pupils to embrace change in a fast evolving world.
“There is unprecedented advancement in technology so it was important that children get first-hand experience of where the world is going technologically. We want to nurture global pupils who have a better appreciation of the world around us,” said Matuke.
He said the exposure will challenge pupils into studying hard so that they can be part of the elite class that is changing the world.
“Every person needs to be pushed or motivated by something. As you may know, China is a technological power house which can inspire our pupils.
“That way, pupils come to understand the seriousness of the world so that they can be motivated to study hard for them to influence similar development,” said Matuke.education

Nyikayaramba about to cut the ribbon while Mutonhori Head Lucas Masokose looks on

TellZim Reporter

MASVINGO – The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) last week commissioned two classroom blocks; one in Bikita and the other in Zaka West as part of the armed forces’ efforts to widen their social responsibility work in ordinary communities.
In Bikita, the classroom block was built at Chikukutu Primary School and was officially commissioned by ZNA commander Philip Valerio Sibanda.
Chief of Staff Administration, Major General Douglas Nyikayaramba commissioned a computer laboratory in at Mutonhori High School in Zaka.
Mjr Gen Nyikayaramba said building infrastructure was one of ZNA’s ways of giving back to the community in appreciation of the role that parents played during the liberation struggle.
“During the liberation struggle, we were ordered not to destroy schools for we wanted to use them after the war. The army is at your disposal; just provide all the necessary materials and invite us and we will not take long,” said Nyikayaramba
Local Member of Parliament Vincent Mawere praised the ZNA for working hard for the development of education in his constituency.
He also hailed former Mutonhori school head Severino Bvunyenge for initiating the project and urged current head Lucas Masokose to continue with the spirit of development.
ZNA will commission two more completed projects in Chivi and Mwenezi districts this month.local

Masvingo General Hospital could soon be singing the ‘Amazing Grace’ after a medical team from Licking Memorial Hospital in the American state of Ohio showed keen interest in establishing a partnership which would result in the provision world class health care services.
The medical team came into the country on a scouting mission to see which hospitals they could partner for the purposes of development and training.
They came under the banner of Rotary International and their trip was also facilitated by the philanthropic organisation, the Living Water of Ohio.
The Masvingo Rotary Club also played an active role in securing the visit of the medical team.
Head of delegation and former president of the Newark Heath Rotary Club in Ohio, Jeff Smith said the people of Ohio loved the people of Zimbabwe and they will work hard to create relations with

medical institutions in the country.
“For the love of humanity, we have travelled this far to come and see how best we can work together with Masvingo Provincial Hospital.
“We want to create a mutual relationship which benefits both sides and if possible, we could create an exchange programme for our staff to gain more experience and knowledge. This is the beginning of a long relationship,” said Smith.
The tour revealed the urgent work that needs to be done to fix the deplorable conditions at the hospital’s mortuary.
Masvingo General Hospital Public Relations Officer (PRO) Ruth Zulu said there were huge problems with the mortuary of the province’s only referral medical facility.
“The mortuary is very small and in a deplorable state. There is need to build a bigger morgue which can accommodate more bodies and keep them well preserved,” said Zulu.
The medical team from Ohio also donated some theatre materials before spending the whole day treating patients free of charge.local
