Chivi – Ward 14 under 23 soccer boys beat their ward 11 competitors 4-1 while the under 23 netball trophy was lifted by ward 30 after a thrilling 6-5 win over ward 17 in the Austin Tsvakwi Hakunavanhu Challenge Cup annual tournament held last week.
The tournament had six netball teams and four under 23 boys’ football teams after the preliminary matches were played at different wards to decide finalists.
In the men’s games, ward 14 met ward 11 in a one-sided final match which ward 14 won 4-1 to lift the ATH cup.
The winners took advantage of sloppy ward 11 defences and netted two goals with an acrobatic fourth goal, which was later named goal of the tournament, from Daniel Hombe, sealing the fate of ward 11.
The netball final match between ward 30 and ward 17 was won by ward 30 who lifted the cup after winning 6-5.
Sponsored by Chivi district NASH chairperson, Austin Hakunavanhu, the tournament is now an inspiration to the rural people of Chivi with every competing team walking away with an award.
“We just try to make recreational services available for the people in rural areas so that they keep themselves occupied and entertained with a view of avoiding anti-social activities. I am not alone in this but I have friends who help sponsor this tournament,” Hakunavanhu said.
The tournament takes place every August when people in rural areas are less busy with agricultural activities. This year’s successful tournament is the fourth since the it was launched.news

ZVISHAVANE – Former Premier Soccer League (PSL) side Shabanie FC dismissed Tongogara FC by two goals to one in a thrilling Zifa Central Region Division One League match played at Maglass Stadium over the weekend.
The win saw Bvaru-Bvaru, as Shabanie is affectionately known by its legion of fans, going up the ladder to lead the Central region log standings and ignited hope for another dance in the top flight league next season.
Tongogara FC was the first to score in the early minutes of the first half but Shabanie FC came back rejuvenated after the oranges and netted two to seal the victory.
Shabanie FC coach Tendai Chikuni hailed his boys for maintaining the winning formula they recently discovered.
“Our boys played well and Im happy we have maintained the winning formula we recently discovered. Tongogara is a strong team but we managed to convert all the chances we got. We have played 16 games so far and I can say this was our best game this season. We are going to take the positives from this game and build from there,” said Chikuni.
He said experienced players like former Warriors defender Zvenyika Makonese added value to the team.
Tongogara FC coach Ignatius Kapitapita conceded defeat saying they lost to a better side.
“We lost to a better team; we are happy with the result. In the game of football you either win, lose or draw but we have to remain focused. Our focus now is on our next game,” said Kapitapita.news

Masvingo – The Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) 4 Infantry Brigade last week extended its helping hand to the Mucheke Old People’s Home where they spent three days carrying out various projects aimed at improving conditions at the institution.
Among the many activities carried out by members of the army from 4 Brigade include painting the inmates’ quarters, repairing and upgrading electrical installations as well as gardening.
Most notably, members of the military’s medical team spend several hours diagnosing and giving treatment to all ailing inmates and other members of the community.
Senior medical officer, Major Magadzire Matsvaire, attended every patient, giving free treatment.
Recently, members of the 4 Infantry Brigade, who have earned a lot of respect and praise for their yearly social responsibility programmes, commissioned a new classroom block they built at Ndarama High School as part of commemorating the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays.
Speaking at the institution during a luncheon hosted by the army at the end of the programme, Commander 4 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier General Exsebious Tshuma stressed the importance of social responsibility.
“We are pleased by the work that has been done here; the renovations that have been done on the walls, painting, gardening and electrical repairs. We realised that some of the people here cannot go to the stadium for the Defence Forces Day celebration so we saw it necessary to be with them today,” said Brigadier General Tshuma.
He also made a commitment to continue helping vulnerable and needy members of society as well as provide necessary intervention where the army’s assistance is needed.
“We will be in touch so that we give all the necessary help. We have artisans who are ready to come and fix any place that needs to be fixed if the resources are available; paints and electrical items,” Brigadier General Tshuma said.
Mucheke Old People’s Home administrator, Joseph Phiri said members of the public must learn the 4 Infantry Brigade and assist the needy.
“Today is a special day to us and the old people we have here. Besides food, our rooms have been nicely painted. To Zimbabweans, please bring all that you have like clothes you no longer use, they will be of a great importance here,” he said.
Other community assistance projects done by the Defence Forces this year include the building of a classroom at Mutonhori and the construction of Chingwizi Clinic in Naunetsi Ranch. The clinic was officially handed to the community by ZDF Commander, General Constantino Guveya Nyikadzino Chiwenga on August 1 this year.news

Chivi RDC praises ZNA major for road maintenance efforts

Chivi – A Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) major stationed at the army General Headquarters in Harare has earned himself praise from Chivi Rural District Council (CRDC) for his efforts in road maintenance in the district.
This was revealed by Chivi Rural District Council Chief Executive Officer, Tariro Matavire in an interview with TellZim News last week.
“Major Mahapa frequently used the Chivi-Chomuruvati road on his way home in the Run’ai area and discovered that the road was in bad shape so he decided to act.
“He brought a grader and provided food for its operators while negotiating for their accommodation on the way. He also bought the fuel used by the grader,” Matavire said.
He said council has since applied to the Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (ZINARA) for the change of use of funds earmarked for other projects to improve roads.
“We then took over from where major Mahapa had left. We have now put most of the road under the grader and we have also embarked on maintenance of other roads.
“To date we have put close to 100 kilometres under the grader with resources for other roads coming from funds we generate. The exercise is ongoing and resources will only be the limit.
“All our major roads are now passable and the same can be said for our secondary roads. We have done about 70 percent of what needs to be done and hope to complete the outstanding 30 percent soon,” Matavire said.
He said council had since bought a new dump truck and tractor for use in the application of gravel.
“We hope putting new gravel on our roads will lengthen their lifespan and give us a chance to direct resources to other projects,” he said.
He said the rural council had accepted public-private partnerships in the implementation of development projects and had already undertaken the maintenance of the Maringire-Berejena road in partnership with the Masvingo Development Association.
Another partnership with Murowa Diamonds for the maintenance of Davira-Chikofa-Gwitima is also bearing fruit.
“We had to pull the grader off this road after it broke down and spent more than two months before it was repaired. After it was repaired we diverted the grader to other roads where we were using ZINARA funds.
“Delays in the completion of these projects would have meant a delay in future disbursements of ZINARA funds,” said Matavire.
Matavire said they had prioritised road maintenance without giving regard to whether a road had to be serviced either by the council or the District Development Fund (DDF).news

Chimedza to sponsor soccer tournament in Gutu

Kudzai Matava

Mpandawana – Gutu South legislator Dr Paul Chimedza has promised to sponsor a football tournament in his constituency as part of his efforts to give back to his community and interact with the people that he represents.
Dr Chimedza has initiated a number of projects in Gutu South since his election as MP in 2013 but all of them have stalled midway due to factional battles ravaging the ruling party.
Regarding the tournament, Dr Chimedza said both primary and secondary schools in Gutu South will take part starting with zonal games and then district finals.
He said he has decided to interact with the people of his constituency through social activities including sponsoring the soccer tournament adding that there will be 17 secondary schools and 43 primary schools which will be participating in this tournament.
“I am glad that I am able to work with the education sector of my constituency. This was my wish from the beginning because that is where I was raised. I hope we are going to motivate the schools in Gutu South and get the support of teachers in this constituency.  I also hope that they are going to cooperate in many ways” said Dr Chimedza.news

Local artist dreams big

0

Itai Muzondo

Masvingo – A local-based budding painter, Michael Moyo is setting his sights on exhibiting in national galleries, saying he is determined to reach greater heights as he works to popularise his works across the country.
The youthful Moyo, who is also a Masvingo Polytechnic art student, says art is in his blood and is working hard to let people see and appreciate his work.
“I dream big and my perfection will definitely take me to my dreams. My dream is to exhibit my work across the world and be recognised among the world’s finest contemporary painters,” Moyo told TellZim News.
The young painter, who revealed his father Emmanuel Moyo is also an artist, said his passion for art started after seeing his father’s works that capture issues to do with current humanitarian and political affairs.
“My paintings portray day to day issues that are highlighted by the media. I have also started doing images based on agendas being driven by social media. I do that because it’s an artist’s duty to communicate practically with audiences so that they at least have reference to something when they engage in the public discourse,” he added.
The talented artist has however lamented lack of exhibition opportunities in Masvingo province and the whole country saying many artistic pieces are going without the requisite recognition due to lack of opportunity.
“The most annoying things in the art industry include the low returns on effort and the very few platforms to exhibit our work as artists. So even if people I meet on a personal basis give praises to my work, it is worthy little if I am not able to derive material benefit out of it and if I am not able to expose my talent to the world,” he said.new

Chipangane Pri Sch electrified

0

Kennedy Murwira

Gutu – Chipangane Primary School in Ward 37 of Gutu district was recently electrified raising the community’s hopes that their children will now be exposed to modern trends in education as computer lessons will be introduced.
Ward 37 councillor and Mpandawana Town Board chairperson, Gabriel Mapepa, who spearheaded the project, said the idea to connect the school to the grid was mooted as early as 2010 but the project only got underway in 2015.
“We decided to embark on the project after realising that the main supply line lay only 4 kilometres from the school. In that regard, we approached the Rural Electrification Agency who assisted with the implementation of the project.
“The project is now complete and the school will soon have access to power. The community around the school will also benefit as they can electrify their homes,” Mapepa said.
He added that the school is going to introduce computer lessons that will assist pupils to catch up with modern trends in education.
“In addition, we expect a rise in the number of teachers who are interested to work at the school and those who are already at the school will be motivated to stay on instead of transferring to other schools which have better conditions than Chipangane,” said Mapepa.
Mapepa said after holding several meetings with the school authorities and members of the community they had agreed to implement projects that will generate revenue for the school but most of them had failed to kick off as they required electricity supply.
“We have already repaired the bridge which links the school with the busy Gutu-Chiredzi highway to make the school accessible and to make our income generating activities a success.
“The electrification of the school should see a marked difference in the socio-economic situation of both the school and the community,” Mapepa said.news

ZIMUTO – Masvingo North legislator and Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Mechanisation, Davies Marapira has pledged to help farmers with the Sekenende cooperative so that they develop their projects.
Marapira was peaking during the Aquaculture Zimbabwe ‘Eat Fish Twice a Week’ campaign held in Bawa area under Chief Zimuto last week.
The minister toured the cooperative’s poultry, piggery and two fish ponds which to date have more than 16 000 Nail Tilaphia fish.
He commended Aquaculture, an organisation which funded part of the fishery project, for supporting Masvingo North.
He pledged to assist the piggery section with feeds so as to boost the lives of the local people.
“Aquaculture is doing a great job here, however I have noted that the cooperative also started a piggery project which needs more feeds, I will assist with the feeds so that they can earn a decent living from these initiatives,” said Marapira.
Aquaculture Zimbabwe country director, Martin Dhingwa urged people to take the campaign serious, describing it a step forward in the quest for better nutrition..
“We are trying to encourage people to eat healthy food and this campaign is part of the programme which we encourage people to take seriously.

A beneficiary of the initiative, Shadaya Mugove said the ponds were constructed through a food for work programme between 2013 and 2014.
“We draw the water from Sekenende dam and we have benefitted financially as we doing various projects. We have acquired technical knowledge from Aquaculture Zimbabwe.

Gutu man assaults father over mice

Kennedy Murwira

GUTU – A short-tempered man was last week summoned by Gutu police and counseled after he assaulted his father for selling mice while living none for his family.
Edmore Mushininga from Vhondo Village under Headman Chisvino assaulted his father, Farai Mushininga, who had arrived home from a beer drink at a homestead in the same village.
Villagers told TellZim News that Edmore’s father is well known in the area for catching mice and on that particular day, he had sold some mice to raise money for the beer.
After a beer drink together, Farai and his son returned home together but Edmore was angry at being served sadza with green vegetables, accusing his father of selling good meat when there was none at home.
He also complained that his father had eaten the fish he had bought the previous day in Mpandawana.
“The father was aware that his son habitually assaulted him and did not respond to his accusations. However, Edmore went on to severely assault him for selling the mice.
“His father reported the assault to the police at Gutu and Edmore was summoned to the police station where he was counseled by the Community Relations and Liaison Officer. He was also warned against assaulting his father in future,” a family member revealed.
Villagers expressed shock and dismay at Edmore’s behavior saying he is a self-employed brick molder who is not expected to be involved in petty fights, let alone assault his father over food.news

Murambinda crumbles as economy bites

0
Davison Marenga

Murambinda – The current economic situation prevailing in the country has taken its toll on Murambinda growth point which has lately seen a sharp decrease in economic activity with devastating consequences on a once promising place.
By all accounts, the growth point has declined into a pale shadow of its former self.
The cat and mouse games between the council and vendors which used to be a common feature in the dusty streets are now rare with many traders saying some of them are giving up on informal business citing losses as people’s buying power continues to decline.
Like many rural business centres in the country, Murambinda does not have any meaningful secondary industry with most business made up of rural people who make occasional visits for banking and buying provisions.
Lately, those movements have become limited with banks facing severe cash shortages.
The grocery shops have consequently felt the pinch, with many of them teetering on the brink of collapse as the import ban imposed by the government late last month erodes profits.
“Coming here is now painful because most of the times we waste money on transport and find nothing at the banks and the shops. The banks always complain of cash shortages,” said Sarendai Chikwenya, who comes from surrounding areas.
“I don’t know what is happening to our country, it seems we are heading back to the 2008 situation,” said one pensioner.
One of the most affected areas is the transport business where the number of commuter omnibuses plying the same route out number their passengers.
This has led to numerous confrontations and fights among touts as they rush for the few customers available.
The situation has gone out of hand with the police at times having to intervene to put off the fire.news
