Gutu – Chipangane Primary School in Ward 37 of Gutu district was recently electrified raising the community’s hopes that their children will now be exposed to modern trends in education as computer lessons will be introduced.
Ward 37 councillor and Mpandawana Town Board chairperson, Gabriel Mapepa, who spearheaded the project, said the idea to connect the school to the grid was mooted as early as 2010 but the project only got underway in 2015.
“We decided to embark on the project after realising that the main supply line lay only 4 kilometres from the school. In that regard, we approached the Rural Electrification Agency who assisted with the implementation of the project.
“The project is now complete and the school will soon have access to power. The community around the school will also benefit as they can electrify their homes,” Mapepa said.
He added that the school is going to introduce computer lessons that will assist pupils to catch up with modern trends in education.
“In addition, we expect a rise in the number of teachers who are interested to work at the school and those who are already at the school will be motivated to stay on instead of transferring to other schools which have better conditions than Chipangane,” said Mapepa.
Mapepa said after holding several meetings with the school authorities and members of the community they had agreed to implement projects that will generate revenue for the school but most of them had failed to kick off as they required electricity supply.
“We have already repaired the bridge which links the school with the busy Gutu-Chiredzi highway to make the school accessible and to make our income generating activities a success.
“The electrification of the school should see a marked difference in the socio-economic situation of both the school and the community,” Mapepa said.news
