Anthrax scare in Gonarezhou

By Beatific Gumbwanda

CHIREDZI – Gonarezhou National Park has been hit by anthrax disease which is killing wildlife, especially buffaloes.
The Park is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park (GLTP) together with Limpopo and Kruger National Parks in Mozambique and South Africa respectively.
Gonarezhou National Park Senior Area Manager Lloyd Nzombane told TellZim News that they had employed several methods to contain the spread of anthrax in the park as well as surrounding communities.
“At this stage, the focus of our efforts is on containment of the outbreak to limit any potential spread of the disease to other wildlife, domestic animals and humans.
“All animal carcasses found in the area are being destroyed upon discovery using a combination of either burying or burning. We are flying aerial transects daily to assist with early detection of carcasses, ten two-man (10×2 men) patrol teams are reacting to aerial reports and five vehicle mobile ground teams follow up and dispose of carcasses.
“Responsible authorities such as the veterinary division and the Ministry of Health were informed and all traffic driving through the affected area is going through a decontamination process at all exit points,” said Nzombane.
Government has responded by vaccinating livestock from the surrounding communities in order to contain the spread of the disease.
Chiredzi District Veterinary Officer, Doctor Kudakwashe Makwangudze said they received vaccines for cattle from diptanks around the National Park.
“We are vaccinating cattle from diptanks around the game park. We have 31 800 doses,” said Makwangudze.
Communities surrounding Gonarezhou National Park usually drive their livestock in the national park for grazing during drought and this increases the chances of them getting the deadly diseases.
Recently, government finished constructing the 192-kilometre Gonarezhou Veterinary Game Cordon fence in an effort to combat the spread of foot and mouth disease in the cattle-rich southern and eastern parts of Chiredzi.
Anthrax, which mainly affects livestock and wild game while humans can also be infected, is caused by a spore-forming bacterium, Bacicillus anthracis. These spores are formed by anthrax bacteria that occur naturally in soil in most parts of the world that can remain dormant for years until they find their way into a host.

Government to end Tongaat monopoly

By Virginia Njovo

Chiredzi is poised to welcome its third sugar mill, a move that is expected to boost output, stimulate competition in the local sugar industry as well as end monopoly by Tongaat Hulett.
Sugar cane farmers in the Lowveld were forced to deliver their cane to Tongaat Hulett mills allowing the company to determine price fixing among other things, which government has responded to by establishing another mill to give growers an option.
This was revealed by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira during Masvingo Business Expo held at Urban Lifestyles Hotel in Masvingo recently.
“Government has noticed the manipulation of Chiredzi Farmers by Tongaat Hulett since it is the only company in Zimbabwe which has processing mills, and has decided to decentralize power in the sugar industry,” said Chadzamira.
He also added that the government was doing inquiries and sourcing for investors who might want to come and invest in Chiredzi, with several investors already showing interest.
“The new mill aims to provide farmers with more choices and curb Tongaat’s monopoly in Chiredzi. We have called for investors willing to invest in that area and several of them have already shown interest so we hope that the work will begin soon,” added Chadzamira.
One Chiredzi sugarcane farmer Maria Kujinga said she welcomed the government’s intervention, saying it will diversify choices for farmers and minimize monopoly in the industry.
“If government sets up the mill in Chiredzi, farmers will have a choice and that means we will get better services,” said Kujinga.
Former Chiredzi South MP who is also a farmer Kalisto Gwanetsa, welcomed the development and said government involvement in sugarcane production was overdue.
“Government should intervene in the cane farming the way it does to other crops like maize and wheat,” said Gwanetsa.
Another farmer David Jani Masomere told TellZim News that it was the best idea that government will establish a mill as there was a lot of sabotage and delays by Tongaat Hulett.
“The idea of the third mill is the best since farmers are waiting in long queues for milling which causes the depreciation of value of sugar cane. As far as we know, Tongaat is also a farmer and they prioritize their cane first,” said Masomere.
Masomere also said the country will benefit from the products, not only sugar but molasses as well as ethanol.
“If the government can establish the third mill it will benefit farmers as well as the nation at large since all the end products like molasses and ethanol will be held by government,” added Masomere.
Over 1 200 indigenous commercial sugar cane farmers in the Lowveld are waiting for two mills at Hippo Valley and Triangle which are not adequate for them since farmers will be spending several days waiting for milling, which compromises the sugar cane’s quality.
Tongaat runs the country’s only two sugar mills at Triangle and Hippo Valley Estates, having a combined annual milling capacity of 600 000 tonnes.

Clinic goes for five years without running water

By Meditation Mposi

Chatikobo Clinic under Chief Murinye in Masvingo District has been operating without clean and safe water posing serious threats to patients mainly expecting mothers who often seek health care services there, TellZim News has learnt.
The situation is also exacerbated by lack of proper waiting mother’s shelter at the clinic, a development which forced some pregnant women from the area to give birth at home.
Speaking to this publication, District Nursing Officer Lilian Mumhuri said Chatikobo Clinic had been operating without running water since August 2019 and this forced patients as well as waiting mothers to bring water from their communities or fetch from the borehole which is close to a kilometre away.
“The clinic has been operating without running water since August 2019 and this forces staff members, patients, and waiting mothers to bring water from their homes, now we are using a borehole which is 800 meters away from the clinic, and that is where both patients and waiting mothers fetch water.
“There was a health scare at the clinic when we had cholera cases reported in the district because there was no running water for clients and patients to wash their hands as they entered and exited the premises,” said Mumhuri.
Mumhuri appealed to the government and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) for water tanks and renewal of the water pipes.
“The clinic is appealing for water tanks and replacement of water pipes from government and other NGOs because without running water at the clinic patients will be exposed to infectious diseases like diarrhea and cholera,” said Mumhuri.
Local village head Nicholas Chatikobo said most women in the area were giving birth in their homes as the clinic had no proper waiting mothers’ shelter as the single room used at the clinic had no beds.
“The situation is dire for our women as most of them from surrounding villages are giving birth at home because the local clinic has no proper maternity house for waiting mothers. The clinic does not have a waiting mother’s shelter and waiting mothers are using a small single room at the clinic which does not have beds,” said Chatikobo.
Chatikobo said apart from the maternity house, there was no accommodation for members of staff at the clinic with the seven staff members using a single room each.
“The other problem is that there is no accommodation for staff members, the clinic has seven staff members and each has a single small room. The situation has resulted in professional staff always seeking for transfer,” said Chatikobo.
78-year-old Makanganise Zvandasara from Ward 15 said the community had tried to improve the situation by contributing money towards the construction of staff houses but had only managed to raise money for one room.
“Villagers from different communities have contributed towards the building of staff houses and have been bringing a US$1 per person for construction but we have raised a small amount which the clinic used to extend an old house with one room,” said Zvandasara.
TellZim News however could not establish the number of women that had given birth from their homes to substantiate the claims.
The clinic, which is about 90 kilometers from Masvingo CBD has a big catchment area and serves people in several wards including some from Zaka District, has been without water for close to five years after the pumps that were used to draw water from a nearby borehole broke down.

Grade 7 pupil fails to get medical assistance, dies from fire burns

By Tatiana Mhararira

In a sad development, a Grade 7 pupil failed to get medical attention and died four days later from the burns after the dress she was wearing caught fire while cooking.
Chief Chitsa, born Nyika Chibvongodze, confirmed the death of Rachel Masango whom she said died four days later after the incident as she failed to get medical attention on time.
“I confirm the death of Rachel Masango who succumbed to severe burns after the dress she was wearing caught fire while cooking. Masango died at her parents’ home four days later as no one sought medical treatment for her,” said Chief Chitsa.
Chief Chitsa bemoaned the death of the young girl and said he had since summoned the deceased’s parents over the matter.
“Masango’s parents committed a crime of infringing her right to life as they indirectly contributed to her death by failing to seek medical assistance for the child. We are going to question them and clarify to them the child’s rights they abused before handing them over to Bhasera Police Station,” said Chief Chitsa.
“We are seeking help from organisations that cater for children’s rights to help us in raising awareness especially among the apostolic church sects,” he added.
Circumstances are that Masango’s dress caught fire as she was cooking and she failed to dowse off the fire. She screamed for help from her siblings but they allegedly ignored her thinking that she was joking.
After some time, the siblings later noticed that her dress had indeed caught fire and they rushed to assist. Unfortunately, they failed prompting them to scream for help from the elders who later rushed to assist. However, the elders came a little bit too late when Masango’s dress was completely burnt.
The parents did not rush her to clinic for medical treatment, rather they kept her home using traditional remedies to heal the wounds. She then succumbed to the burns after four days.

Indigenous Churches Bible College Hosts First Graduation

By Tatiana Mhararira

The first African Indigenous Church (AIC) bible college, that was formalized earlier this year, held its first graduation at the church’s headquarters at Mandadzaka in Bikita where about 80 students graduated.
Speaking to TellZim News, Zion Christian Bible college founder and leader of one of the many Zion Christian Church (ZCC) denominations, Dr Bishop Mutendi Mutendi said classes started earlier this year with more than 100 students but other dropped along the way due to various reasons.
The guest of honor at the graduation ceremony was Reverend Oria Mawewe, son to the late ZCC Judea Bishop Dr Ofiro Mawewe.
Dr Mutendi said he was inspired by his late father Reuben to formalize education within the church and decided to partner South Africa’s Reformer Theological Seminary to develop a model for the AICs in Zimbabwe.
“I was inspired by my late father Bishop Reuben Mutendi who was son to Samuel Mutendi to allow the formal education of the Bible. My father always told me that l want you to learn and uplift God’s work and the church.
“We started the college this year to formalize Bible education. We offer a certificate in Biblical Studies and Ministry. We have online lessons and physical lessons during the block release sessions,” said Dr Mutendi.
Dr Mutendi said the program started at congregation level in 2013 where church leaders did bible studies but it was not formal.
“In 2013 we started with a Bible study which was a more organized way of studying the Bible which was being done in all the congregations. After obtaining my Master’s degree in Theology, we improved the structure of Bible Study finding ways of having a curriculum,” said Dr Mutendi.
He said the college was open to everyone especially those in AIC churches whose doctrine is almost the same saying the church values and doctrines differed from Pentecostal and mainline churches hence it was difficult for them to enroll.
“The courses at the college are meant for everyone from any church without institutions to equip them with Biblical skills including groups such as apostolic sects that read the Bible,” said Dr Mutendi
Some of the modules that students studied at AIC College include discipleship evangelism and missions, trustworthy faith which is systematic theology that teaches the nature of God, listening and encouraging that is responsible for counselling and Homiletics which is Bible interpretation.
Dr Mutendi said the next intake of the college will introduce practical subjects at the college saying the certificate course was one year long for part-time students but for fulltime students it is six months long.
“Our next intake will introduce practical subjects such as agriculture, building, carpentry and dressmaking. These will work as options that an individual will take so as to have skills that will empower themselves afterwards,” said Dr Mutendi.
Dr Mutendi said bible education level was low in AICs and that often led to unnecessary divisions and splits in the churches hence there was need to equip pastors, who were mostly appointed not on qualification, with theological education.

Chamisa: The Biblical Joshua that never was

By Brighton Chiseva

With Zimbabwe being largely a Christian nation where religion and politics are juxtaposed, the former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa touted himself as the Biblical Joshua saying he will lead the people of Zimbabwe to the Promised Land full of milk and honey.
Chamisa gave himself the moniker ‘Biblical Joshua’ soon after the death of Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) leader Morgan Tsvangirai whom he equated to the Biblical Moses following his death on February 14, 2018 before defeating Zanu PF.
Equipped with oratory prowess, Chamisa made Zimbabweans dream again, as they had had during the Government of National Unity (GNU), with the youthful opposition leader quickly stealing hearts even as the hordes of MDC-T supporters were still mourning Tsvangirai, assuring all and sundry that indeed, ‘God is in it’.
Unlike in the biblical context however, the transition from Tsvangirai to Chamisa was full of contestation and betrayal that saw the division of the party, and ultimately the death of MDC as the main opposition brand name.
During Tsvangirai’s funeral for instance, Chamisa loyalists victimized Dr Thokozani Khupe, who was one of the MDC deputies, threatening her into unpopularity with opposition supporters who now saw her as a sellout, all thanks to Chamisa’s tricks.
Through it all, Chamisa still maintained grip on the opposition, working with former renegades Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube who were leading People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and MDC-N respectively to consolidate a coalition movement (MDC-Alliance) that had been created by Tsvangirai.
At all rallies in the run up to the 2018 harmonized elections, Chamisa would call Ncube and Biti to the stage and ask them to confirm to supporters how Tsvangirai anointed him before his demise, giving hope to Zimbabweans.
The two would go on to reinforce claims that they were instructed to work with Chamisa as the leader of the MDC-Alliance, which some thought was a gimmick by Biti and Ncube who now sought a comeback as their respective parties were going under.
Flaunted as a youthful, vibrant and charismatic opposition leader, Chamisa however often got caught up in inconsistent statements and claims, which were mostly rubbished by allies and sympathizers as he kept assuring them that ‘God is in it’.
In many of his addresses since 2018, Chamisa has always been known for brandishing bible verses, including the fact that he was the biblical Joshua, promising to beat Mnangagwa in elections without breaking any sweat.
A rude awakening awaited come 2018 elections—the ‘Joshua’ failed to deliver on his promise as the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) announced Chamisa’s rival and ruling party Zanu PF leader President Emmerson Mnangagwa as the winner.
Realizing that the much anticipated results came back negative, Chamisa pulled the rigging card, rallied supporters to sing the same hymn, a narrative he still maintains until now, despite earlier claiming that just like the walls of Jericho, Zanu PF was as good as gone.
This was despite him coming back from losing MDC-Alliance to Douglas Mwonzora, to which he responded by creating a fresh opposition movement, Citizen Coalition for Change (CCC).
“Mr Mnangagwa is not prepared to win, he is plotting to rig. I told SADC that he stole the elections in 2018, this time I will not accept to allow him to rig the election again,” Chamisa said while addressing supporters in Harare in 2023.
Again, Chamisa’s envisioned Promised Land proved to be a pipe dream as Mnangagwa won again in 2023 dashing the hopes of poverty-stricken Zimbabweans who had seen an alternative in him.
More political mistakes cost him his new party, CCC in 2023, leading to recalls of many of his lieutenants who had been elected into Parliament and local authorities, despite him still commanding a large following.
In response to the 2023 post-election betrayal by little-known Sengezo Tshabangu, and later Biti, Ncube, Lynnete Karenyi-Kore and others, Chamisa jumped off-ship, folding into ambiguity, leaving supporters, sympathizers, and allies alike confused, while the land of honey and milk remains elusive.

Not the biblical Joshua

Analysts have said comparing Chamisa to the biblical Joshua is to overrate his capabilities as he has proven to be nowhere near the biblical figure, because many are wondering if God is really ‘in it’.
Dr Wellington Gadzikwa said the statement by Chamisa that ‘God is in it’ is a meaningless cliché he was hiding behind, adding that Chamisa should apply rules of the political game rather than hiding behind Bible verses.
“We don’t know which god he is talking about when he says that. Politics is a game that has rules and the rules of the game have to be applied.
“Chamisa cannot be the biblical Joshua unless in a cartoon series—he abandoned the people at a critical time and was not even apologetic. People had invested resources, time, emotions but he chose to go.
Dr Gadzikwa berated the Strategic Ambiguity theme used by the CCC from its infancy, saying it was Chamisa’s biggest undoing as a leader.
Political analyst Professor Charles Pfukwa said Chamisa being a good orator made him throw some religious metaphors in his speeches to appeal to Christians who constitute the majority of Zimbabweans, with a chunk of them desperate for economic change.
“Chamisa still has a long way to go until he has a chance to lead. I don’t see that happening soon but we can always wait for the ballot,” Prof Pfukwa said.

Losing grip on deployees

Despite announcing his decision to leave CCC on January 2, 2024 citing ruling party interference, Chamisa tried to influence parliamentarians and councilors elected under CCC to pull out of parliament and council, with only a paltry number complying.
Tshabangu who used Chmaisa’s ‘strategic ambiguity’ against its master facilitated the recalling of legislators, including two first and youngest female Mayors.
Chamisa attempted to maintain grip on remaining party deployees, which was in vain as their bid for reelection through by-elections failed dismally, and again, his faction lost leader-of-opposition in parliament where Tshabangu was elected to lead ahead of Chamisa loyalist Clifford Hlatshwayo.
Recently, Chamisa’s faction lost again when his loyalists instructed CCC mayors and council chairpersons not to attend the Chitepo School of Ideology seminar in Harare, an order which was ignored by all.
Only one mayor, David Coltart did not attend, because he had other pressing issues to attend to, showing that the CCC party has already bolted from the stable like a horse without the rider.
Political Scientist Dr Arthur Fidelis Chikerema said Chamisa came in when the country had no political freedom and confronted Zanu PF when it was not fashionable to do so but he lost direction along the way.
“When he was a student at Harare Polytechnic, mingling with student leaders from UZ and NUST, by then it was not easy, the political environment at that time was so closed, and brutal under Mugabe’s ruthless regime.
“Chamisa, Biti, Learnmore Jongwe and Job Sikhala were bold and courageous enough to confront the Mugabe regime against the formation of a one party state. Chamisa rose through the ranks from youth leader, spokesperson of the main wing, organizer of the main wing. Contesting the secretary general post despite losing to Douglas Mwonzora and later being appointed third VP.
“This guy’s history is so robust to a point where everyone had conviction that he will lead a political party and Zimbabwe at large.
“Unfortunately his transition from Tsvangirai was unconstitutional and was based on personal convictions. In the MDC Alliance, distribution of posts was not clear; Chamisa was pervasive. The only thing he wanted was to consolidate power at the top, which was not fair. He should have gone to congress rather than violently taking power from legitimate leader Khupe.
“At the moment, Chamisa is not in the right frame of mind. That is why some people are saying he is a project and people don’t have faith or trust in him though he still has support,” said Dr Chikerema.

What’s new for 2028?

Zimbabwe will go for another presidential election in 2028, an election which will likely see Chamisa returning to try his luck again in delivering his ‘Joshua’ promise to the multitude of change-desperate Zimbabweans.
While age may still be thinly on his side, proving to the young people why they should vote for him may be a mammoth task given the circumstances surrounding his political stamina.
It also remains a mystery if Chamisa will retain the same advisors who have made him look like a political jester, bringing into question his ability to lead the country.
Great Zimbabwe University Media lecturer Dr Last Alfandika Alfandika said Chamisa should at least step aside and help create a new, dynamic political challenge.
“While he still has relevance, I believe, it may be in another capacity. If he wishes to contest in 2028, it will be an unfortunate perpetuation of a cycle of incompetence and stagnation for opposition politics in Zimbabwe,” said Dr Alfandika.
Media lecturer Dr Gift Gwindingwe weighed in saying the way Chamisa came to lead the main opposition disqualified him from being the Joshua of Zimbabwe come 2028.
“There is nothing Joshuaic in Chamisa besides duping unsuspecting citizens with high-sounding nothings,” said Dr Gwindingwe.
Political commentator Dr Nicholas Aribino said unlike Chamisa, not at any given time did Joshua abandon his people with or without the intention of coming back.
“Joshua never left his flock; a shepherd cannot leave his flock at the mercy of vultures. A leader has a responsibility to stand with his followers and a duty of care that compels him or her to lead from the front,” said Dr Aribino.
He said the opposition had to think outside the box and lay strategies to counter Zanu PF if it so wishes for future elections, as the strategic ambiguity had proved disastrous for Chamisa and his party.
“Chamisa is damaged goods politically, if not a lost cause. He is now like a mosquito sitting on an elephant, politically speaking. Sometimes I think that he is a stage performer of the ruling party. Imagine just leaving 2m followers like that without having consulted them,” he said.

I heard the palm trees that were planted at the orders of our village head muroad yekuenda kudare akaoma kkkk. Dai vakadana ini hangu I could have done a better job to maintain the trees. Anyway, enough about SADC, iyo yakapera zvayo and the trees served the purpose, Baba 2 in now in charge, if Chamisa still wants to take up his issue with SADC he will just cross the town to the other end and meet the chair kkkk. I heard they are now planning to amend the constitution to allow Ba 2 to be life President. Yes, just like Uncle Bob, he will convene a politburo meeting ari kuHeroes. I hope he will be buried there unlike Bob who forced others to the national shrine only to refuse to go there himself. The issue of constitutional amendment inondisvota zvangu ini.
Let me warn you imi mazivanhu eZanu, stop this nonsense of amending the constitution. Regerai Vakomana. Munoremara vakomana manga mangokura zvakanaka. I hate Togarasei Mwonzorewa but on the constitution especially amendment of the Presidential Term Limit clause chakagona wena. I am not a lawyer but I know and let me tell you. Constitutionally the amendment can only benefit the next president not the incumbent. That is not enough, we have to go for a referendum and again vote yes or no. He dumped the people and decided to follow his spiritual calling. All those people who marched in the streets holding placards are still there. They are ready, it’s just they do not have a leader. Kana zvanetsa you can call back vana Jonso nana Kasukuwere and join forces and recoup our country that has been thrown into an abyss. The cross of Christ as sacrifice

0

By Rev Dr Isiah Dhliwayo

At the heart of Christ’s sacrifice is not his physical body, but his love. The Catechism says: “It is love ‘to the end’ that confers on Christ’s sacrifice its value as redemption and reparation, as atonement and satisfaction. Christ comes from the Greek word χριστός (chrīstós), meaning “anointed one”. The word is derived from the Greek verb χρίω (chrī́ō), meaning “to anoint.”
The Cross demonstrates the ultimate act of love in that, compelled by love, Christ laid down His life for us – His church. We now live in His place because He died in our place. Without the Cross, there is no salvation because there is no redemption. Through His death, Christ paid the ultimate price. Most systematic expositions of the sacrificial character of the cross is found in Hebrews.(Gaybba 1988:71)
The cross of Christ as a sacrifice is a profound and central tenet of Christian thought and theology, embodying themes of love, redemption, atonement, and victory over sin and death. It serves as a reminder to believers of the depth of God’s love and the incredible gift of salvation offered through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. The strongest biblical testimony to the concept of the cross of Christ as a sacrifice is found in Hebrews.
According to Culpepper 1966,1988:68,the writer of Hebrews probably saw the soteriological symbolism of the cross as a hermeneutic key to the atonement.
The etymology of the word sacrifice is from the verb hilasakesthai (cf.Heb 2:17)and the noun hilasmos (cf 1 Jn 2:2;4:10) and denotes hilasterion( Rom 3:24-25), expiation by blood(Culpepper 1966,1988:69-70,Berkhof 1979:304)
In consummating His sacrifice on the cross Christ in one perfect gesture of devotion fulfilled all the moral, ceremonial, and juridical precepts of the Old Testament worship.
The sacrifice of the cross is humanity’s perfectly worshipful homage to the God of all history, and the Resurrection of Christ is the living testimony to God’s acceptance of mankind’s spotless sacrifice. In the paschal mystery Jesus, humanity’s high priest, offered Himself to God as an immolated victim.
All actions of Jesus, as humanity’s high priest, were empowered by measureless efficacy for reconciling mankind with God. But acts anterior to Calvary lacked the specifically sacrificial meaning of the sacrifice of the cross. Sacrifice is an act of external worship; in it the interior act of religion, through which a creature pays homage to God and is united with Him, must be set forth under a recognizable symbol of visible oblation.
However one may ask this view with the question as to whether Jesus’ brutal death was necessary for the expiation of sin?It is a question of the tension between a gracious, loving and merciful God and the iustitia distributiva, retributive justice.

Masvingo War vets resist Mnangagwa third term bid

By Brighton Chiseva

War veterans in Masvingo have resisted President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s third term bid, calling for him to respect the constitution by leaving office at the end of his second term in 2028.
Speaking to TellZim News, one war veteran Western Ezrah from Masvingo said it was unfortunate that some people were misleading the President asking him to break the constitution.
He said those pushing for the third term were mad and should think again before they force for the president to break the constitution.
“In 2013, the people of Zimbabwe, whom we liberated through the war of liberation, wrote a constitution. “The same people whom we freed are the ones calling for the breaking of the same constitution they wrote. Calling for a third term is madness, the constitution is clear and the president should abide by it. So those who are pushing him to continue are really mad,” said Ezrah.
He went on to say the party had clear guidelines and those pushing for the third term had no idea where the party came from nor where it is going.
Asked on who should take over, he said it was clear from the presidium.
“People do not know where Zanu PF is coming from and if you look closely you will see that those calling for the extension of the term limit have no background of the liberation and the party itself.
“The party has a hierarchy and that hierarchy was used since the war of liberation and if you look at the presidium you will see who is supposed to take over. Even culturally, the elders eat first and because we are a cultured people, the elders lead first in their order,” said Ezra.
Another war veteran Retired Major General Gibson Mashingaidze said he was a constitutionalist just like the President who announced that he will leave after his second term.
“I am a constitutionalist just like the President, I survived a number of processes within Zanu PF because I am constitutionalist. So as a constitutionalist I think the President should follow the constitution just like he promised. We all heard him saying he will step down when his second term lapses,” said General Mashingaidze.
Another war veteran who refused to be named said the constitution was clear and as war veterans they believe in transfer of power and following the constitution saying those who were pushing for the third term were benefitting something at the expense of others.
“We believe in the constitution, and the army is there to protect the constitution and will do that when need arises,” said the war vet.
The calls by war vets reveal deep rooted factionalism within the ruling party between Mnangagwa and his deputy Chiwenga.
Chiwenga has support from the army and the war veterans.
The third term call was started by Masvingo Province earlier this year and other provinces went on to adopt the stance saying they wanted the President to make sure that he achieves his 2030 vision while he is still at the helm.
However, the call sparked debates with junior party members being alleged to be against the third term.
Zanu PF Masvingo Provincial leader,Robson Mavhenyengwa, who was once touted to be from Chiwenga faction, said those who were against the third term were not Zanu PF because the provincial decision was made after consultations with relevant party structures.
“We own the decision, it was not made overnight but it was after consultations with others. I am the chairperson so the provincial decision is mine though,” said Mavhenyengwa
