Over 30 Nemamwa teachers do not have accommodation-Chief Nemamwa

TellZim reporter

Around 32 Nemamwa Secondary School teachers are enduring the burden of travelling to and from work as the school is failing to provide for the educators’ housing needs.
The revelation was made by Chief Nemamwa born Fungai Manjiva on June 18 during the belated commemoration of World Press Freedom Day held at Sikato primary school in Nemamwa.
Manjiva said the situation is so disturbing considering that the area is home to Great Zimbabwe a tourist attraction that realizes foreign currency from tourists almost on a daily basis.
“Our major focus on development is on schools and clinics. Right now we have more than 32 teachers at Nemamwa Secondary who do not have accommodation at the school and have to commute to and from work on a daily basis.
“If we consider that we have a tourist attraction in Nemamwa in form of Great Zimbabwe, an ideal situation would be channelling the proceeds towards addressing such anomalies within our communities. Even if we would look for investors to look into the issue of addressing accommodation challenges on part of those teachers, it is our wish that funds realized from such facilities be used towards construction of houses at the school,” said Chief Nemamwa.
He also suggested that the land which has fallen prey to invaders be protected by government for the purpose of housing stands development for the struggling civil servants.
“We wish government could intervene and stop illegal activities on and acquisition of land so that we use it to help our civil servants. We need to protect our land from invaders and their illegal activities for these government workers to stay on since they help towards community development.
“We wish to have more residential stands and most of the civil servants should invest towards the initiative. That will help develop the status of our communities if we come to a situation that we have a doctor staying there and or even teachers and nurses,” added the Chief.
Illegal mining activities are taking place in the Manyama area where environmental degradation is also taking place.

Gamwa former learners donate building material to school

…As parents plead for ICT equipment

Tinaani Nyabereka

Shurugwi- Former Gamwa Secondary School learners this week donated building material to the learning institution as part of efforts to revamp the school and giving back to the community.
The donations handed over to the school by the Alumni Chairperson Osherd Mutunami and Treasurer Conerlia Selipiwe included eight doors, eight keys and security locks.
Speaking after the donation, Gamwa kraal head Aaron Natare said as a community they were happy to receive the donation at the school adding the material was to go a long way in revamping the school’s infrastructure.
“We are very happy with what has happened here at Gamwa Secondary School, as you can see we have received building material for our school and this has been done by our children who were also groomed here at Gamwa. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses and scientists were born and bred here at Gamwa. All these children are now stationed in various countries working across the region.
“I want to appreciate the work that has been done here. We urge the community to embrace such development especially when it comes from our own children whom we struggled to raise. This shows how appreciative our children are to their parents. Well done Gamwa Alumni.
“We want to thank you for this wonderful gesture, for remembering that you have brothers and sisters who are still in need of the same school who are also learning like you did .Today you have also taught them how good it is to give back to the community which made you who you are. Recently we were in a meeting at the school with parents and school staff; we were worried about our doors as most of our classrooms were affected by heavy storms. Some of the blocks had roofs taken away by the wind as you have seen, we were concerned how our children were going to cope this winter,” said Natare.
He however appealed to the well-wishers to continue lending their helping hand as they seek to renovate damaged infrastructure.
“We are also appealing to you our children to help the school to renovate the affected blocks, as well as our toilets as they are in a bad state. We need help at the teachers’ staff quarters in terms of repainting them and tubing the houses so they can have proper electricity connections,” he added.
A parent Edith Maramba said as a community they were requesting for Information Communication Technology (ICT) equipment such as laptops, projectors and internet connnections to enable children to adapt to the fast changing digital world.
“Gamwa has history, we are what we are because of this school, these elderly boys and girls who are now coming back to donate.
“We want computers for the school. Please we want computers for your young brothers and sisters. We also need government to chop in on ICT infrastructure, the rural child is lagging behind,” she said.
Another parent from Dendere village Erick Ngwerume said they were looking forward to see young talent rising from the community.
“I am a parent too and have children who are learning at the school now. We are very grateful, now that the Alumni committee have thought of remembering their roots, we also plead for sport facilities and activities to be done constantly. We want sports to help our children to stay away from ill behaviours and to keep them entertained. We are grateful that last time our son Osherd came and donated football kits. We want balls as well,” he said.
Gamwa Student Alumni (GSA) treasurer Conerlia Selipiwe said as a committee they were going to go with feedback to their peers as efforts to help improve areas which are lagging behind.
“This donation has come as a stepping stone, as a committee we have more projects and donations which will come along the way. Our donation is non-partisan and is focused towards developing our home area.
“One of the former students in our stream passed by the school on his way home someday. He saw that most of the classrooms didn’t have doors as they were reportedly damaged during rainy season while some blocks were affected by the wind. So upon receiving the complaint, we then came together as former students and decided to buy doors and keys to have the classroom fixed.
“Today we have also noted that, there is quite a number of areas which need urgent attention, the widow pens need to be replaced, our teachers’ quarters also need to be tubed properly because the electricity connections are not safe. Some houses don’t even have electricity. Going forward we want to work with the School Development Committee (SDC) and teachers so that we address areas of concern.
“More so where teachers access water, we felt it’s a bit far and not conducive at night. So maybe if boreholes are increased it might help them. All the donations which will follow counting this one are part of the Alumni’s Social Corporate Responsibility. We know the economy is not good but we want to push for the rural child to get better education as part of building his/her tomorrow,” Selipiwe added.
Gamwa school authorities expressed gratitude over the donation saying it was going to go a long way in changing lives.

5 months imprisonment for bag snatching

Tendai Charumbira

A 37 year-old man from Gweru will rue the day he tried his stealing theatrics in Masvingo after being slapped with a five month prison term for theft he committed on June 16, 2022.
Luck ran out for Patrick Matoza of Kudzanai village in Sogwana, Gweru after he tried the trick of deliberately swapping his black satchel with that of Nickson Kwirirai (36) at his work place at Belmont Press building along Simon Muzenda Street in Masvingo Central Business Center (CBD).
Matoza appeared before magistrate Farai Gwitima who initially sentenced him to eight months imprisonment before three were suspended given that he was not to commit a similar offense over the next five years.
The state case as presented by Godknows Magondo, was that on June 16, 2022 at around 0645 hours, Matoza went to Kwirirai’s work place along Simon Muzenda Street in Masvingo CBD and realized that the latter had left his satchel.
In a typical movie-style script, Matoza who had his own black satchel swapped it with Kwirirai’s as the victim was not around at the tables. Unfortunately a flask jug that was near the satchel gave away the move as it fell in the process alerting Kwirirai’s female workplace colleague who raised alarm following Matoza whose pace did not even show signs of panic from the pursuit.
The accused stole the satchel and moved fastly along Josiah Tongogara Street. The female colleague quickly realized that the accused had picked up Kwirirai’s and ran after him.
Detective sergeant Dube and detective constable Hungwe joined the chase and arrested the accused person and they recovered the satchel.
All the money was recovered.
The satchel contained US$ 1 140, 34×$ 10 recharge cards, 62×$5 recharge cards, national identification card, two motor vehicle registration books and an agreement of sale document.
Recently, a female Gutu police officer appeared before magistrate Mandlenkosi Ndlovu facing allegations of stealing cash amounting to US$ 3 700.
Horinda Gwendoline (34) stationed at ZRP Gutu Camp is being charged with theft and was remanded out of custody.

To hell with your fire tenders – Masvingo councils tell July Moyo

… It’s unconstitutional

…We have other priorities

Brighton Chiseva

MASVINGO –Local authorities in the province have rejected the directive from central government where each council has been ordered to pay for a fire tender to a certain supplier using devolution funds at a very inflated price.
Masvingo City Mayor who is also a lawyer, councilor Collen Maboke said the directive by the central government is unconstitutional since the funds are from the devolution funds where they have to consult residents on what they should be used.
“The directive is unconstitutional, devolution funds are public funds and we have to consult residents before we do anything, so they cannot just tell us what to buy before we consult the residents,” said Maboke.
He went on to say a fire tender was not a priority for Masvingo City since they recently got one saying priority should be towards refuse compactors.
“Apart from it being unconstitutional, a fire tender is not our priority as a city council. We have refuse collection challenges and a refuse compactor is a better purchase option. We recently got a fire fighter, so we cannot buy another one. Our residents are worried about refuse collection and they would understand us even if we bought a compactor without talking to them,” added Maboke.
He however said they were yet to sit and deliberate on the matter as council and was sure his colleagues shared his views.
Zaka Rural District Council (RDC) chairperson Cornelius Mapuranga said Zaka District had more pressing issues than a fire tender.
“We cannot purchase a fire tender as it stands because we may never use it or it may take time to use it here in Zaka. What we need here is road construction equipment like graders, our roads are damaged and we are failing to maintain them because we don’t have the equipment,” said Mapuranga.
He went on to say as a district they suffered heavy losses in cattle and could be affected in the next faming season therefore there was need to capacitate the District Development Fund (DDF) so that it helps the local people.
“We lost a number of cattle in the district which poses a challenge in the next farming season. So the central government should at least equip DDF so that they can help the communities,” he added.
Chiredzi Town Council Acting Town Secretary Engineer Wesley Kauma said the local authority recently purchased a fire tender which is awaiting shipment and would want to use the funds for other needs.
“We are currently waiting for RBZ to release funds for shipment of our fire tender which we have already purchased outside and we would request to use the funds for other things like graders since we have a shortage in road equipment,” said Eng Kauma.
Mwenezi RDC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Albert Chivanga said he cannot question a directive from above but if allowed to choose they would not choose a fire tender but would go for other urgent needs.
“I cannot comment on a decision made by my principals. However, if we are allowed to choose, I wouldn’t go for a fire tender but something more urgent like road equipment which we are in dire need of,” said Chivanga.
Masvingo Residents and Rate Payers Alliance spokesperson Godfrey Mtimba echoed Maboke’s sentiments saying the directive defeats the idea of devolution and that their organization will not let council buy the fire tender as it was not a priority for now.
“That directive is centralization instead of devolution, it’s unconstitutional and in the meantime Masvingo City has fire equipment and cannot buy another one while there are other areas that need attention,” said Mtimba.
However, Gutu and Chivi RDC CEOs Alexander Mutembwa and Tariro Matavire said since it was a constitutional requirement they would buy the equipment.
Chiredzi RDC CEO Ailes Baloyi said the idea is a noble one though if given a choice to choose, they would prefer finishing other projects to fire tenders.
“It’s a noble cause to have a fire tender as we encounter some fire incidences. However, given a chance to choose, we would like to finish some projects we have already started,” said Baloyi.
The fire tender issue torched a storm after the Ministry of local government wrote a letter to city, town and rural district councils where the ministry indicated that it was procuring fire tenders from Belarus on behalf of all local authorities with the money being deducted from their devolution fund allocations over a period of 12 months.
“The funds to procure the equipment will be deducted from the 2022 Devolution allocations and will be done over a period of 12 months starting March 2022. The cost of each fire tender is US$ 464 296.
“It is therefore advisable for local authorities to reprioritize the Devolution funds to accommodate the cost of the fire tenders.” read part of the letter from the ministry.
The principle of devolution stipulates that funds be released from central to lower tiers of government with beneficiaries deciding on areas of key priority to use the funds on but that has turned to be a nightmare and the opposite as central government and council management have taken the onus on them to determine where to use the disbursed funds on.
The other challenge has been the late disbursement of the funds derailing progress on projects undertaken.

…Deserted Masvingo devolution-funded boreholes: case of policy inconsistency?

During the run-up to the March 26, 2022, local government and parliamentary by-elections great stride were made on part of aspiring candidates embarking on a number of borehole drilling schemes or projects in areas of contest in a move some have thought is part of the rhetoric electioneering campaign projects which soon cease to be carried on once elections are over.
In Masvingo province the two House of Assembly Zanu PF aspirants and eventual winners Munyaradzi Zizhou (Chivi South) and Master Makope (Mwenezi East) openly admitted to ‘partly’ using devolution funds towards borehole drilling schemes while at the same time claiming to channelling own resources towards the initiative.
In Masvingo Urban constituency where four wards (3, 4, 5 and 7) were at stake to replace councillors recalled by MDC Alliance’s Douglas Mwonzora, devolution funds were reportedly used towards drilling of boreholes while the District Development Fund (DDF) water rig was used to drill some of the boreholes.
What has made Masvingo case a more peculiar is the manner in which the projects were undertaken that is in terms of seeking council approval towards the projects while at the same time the funding remains a mystery as the person in charge of the provincial development initiatives Secretary for Provincial Affairs and Devolution Dr Jefta Sakupwanya has on record given contrasting answers concerning the projects.
During one of the campaign rallies in ward 5 where Zanu PF candidate Hakinstone Chimwai was contesting, politburo member Lovemore Matuke openly declared that the project was being undertaken after approval by Minister of Provincial Affairs and Devolution Ezra Chadzamira.
“Your councillor here asked for solar-powered boreholes and minister of state has approved. We have also approved that and soon you will have them. I heard council has increased rates by 400 percent, so if they continue to rise, you just close the tap and go to the borehole,” claimed Matuke in March.
However Dr Sakupwanya vehemently denied that devolution funds were being used towards propagating party projects.
“Devolution funds cannot be used for campaigns. What happens is that there are annual programmes of drilling three boreholes per ward to be undertaken under the supervision of Dr Masuka (Minister of Lands) where government buys water rigs so that the programmes can be implemented for purposes of ensuring water security.
“There is no way devolution funds could be diverted towards campaigns unless it is meant to meet the needs of the community as would have been identified by council,” he said.
Quizzed on the fact that council through Mayor Collen Maboke has said the boreholes were sunk wantonly without their blessing, Dr Sakupwanya promised to investigate the case as he said council should be aware of the projects since devolution funds are channeled into their coffers.
“So who is behind the drilling of those boreholes if council declines such? Council is supposed to be in charge of devolution programmes and if they say they are not aware of it, then who assumes responsibility? Devolution fund is given to council, so it is impossible to say there are programmes that are done under the facility with council not knowing about it.
“Devolution is meant to meet the needs of the community. As the provincial secretary, I do not have any funds because the money is at councils. I am just there to monitor the expenditure and see to it that the funds are rightfully used for the intended purpose. I would despatch a team to monitor all those allegations. Even the president (Emmerson Mnangagwa) does not condone disorder. We strongly disown such indiscipline as we promote order,” said Dr Sakupwanya.
However three months down the line the boreholes are lying idle with residents continuing facing acute water shortages in and around the city. Rujeko suburb which falls under ward 7 faces recurrent water pipe bursts, residents going for many hours with dry taps despite looking at the solar and water storage tanks stands and the borehole at Jazire shopping centre proving helpless.
This publication later on (two months after the elections in which Zanu PF fared dismally in Masvingo urban to CCC) asked Dr Sakupwanya why the boreholes are not being utilized to ease the burden of water shortages off residents and he said the president is the one who has got the saying on the boreholes and thus they would function after his blessing to do so.
“Presidential borehole drilling scheme is the president’s programme which is going to benefit people in and around Masvingo especially those in the rural areas.
“Why do you want to focus much on the urban instead of the rural set up? There is too much wide coverage in urban than rural set up,” he added.
Asked then in March on the arrangement in which the DDF was drilling boreholes aspiring election candidates were using as part of their campaign trail, Masvingo DDF provincial coordinator Marasa Hamudi Gutukunuhwa said the authority was just carrying out its mandate to serve the community.
“As DDF, we are just carrying out our programmes as we are mandated to. I don’t know if there are individuals who might want to take advantage of such to campaign for political posts,” said Gutukunuhwa.
The principle of devolution of equipping lower tiers of government with resources and ensuring semi-autonomy remains a mystery especially in the wake of central government interfering in local authority operations with the responsible minister dictating pace on and how the projects are conducted while the ordinary citizenry have no saying on the projects of importance in their respective areas.
In some cases council management would determine on behalf on intended beneficiaries areas of priority to be undertaken using the funding.
Recently there was a public outcry nationwide after local government minister July Moyo’s ministry ordered all local authorities to submit to his directive to purchase fire tenders from President Mnangwagwa’s Belarusian counterpart and friend at the cost of US$ 462 000 each using devolution funds despite some local authorities have budgeted the funding towards other projects.

Inerela Zimbabwe to assist sex workers with self-sustaining projects

…As religious leaders denounce acts of abuse against the girl child

Tinaani Nyabereka

Gweru- International Network of Religious Leaders Living with or personally Affected by HIV and Aids (INERELA)-Zimbabwe has taken strides to empower commercial sex workers as part of efforts to fight stigmatization and combat all forms of abuse being encountered by sex workers in society.
The network which is made up of religious leaders, was established in 2002 with the aim to promote the fight against stigma and discrimination on HIV and Aids, by promoting agents of change in the communities.
Speaking to this publication after an engagement meeting with sex workers last week in Gweru, Inerela Zimbabwe Director Paul Carries Juru said the purpose of engaging young girls who are into sex work was meant to come up with possible solutions to help them as acts of discrimination and abuse were on the rise.
“We are here to assist the girl child, we know her challenges are real and she needs our help as the church. They are our children and we cannot forsake them because they need our help. A lot of discrimination is associated with their work, even some of the terms which are used to describe them are very insulting.
“The reason why the church has thought of coming forward is because they want these girls to understand that pastors, overseers, bishops and all religious servants were not only servants of God but also their fathers and mothers. We want sex workers to come and be part of the church, we want them to turn their faith to Christ. We want them to work with their hands, do projects and live differently,” Juru said.
lNERELA change agent and Bethel International Ministries Overseer Margret Tedzerai however urged the women to take good care of their kids and apply for birth certificates to enable their children to go to school.
“We want you girls to get proper upkeep for your children though the economy is not doing well. We understand you are going through various challenges, but we are also advocating for you to get proper jobs or self-sustaining projects to help you generate money for your welfare.
“You are not outcasts but rather you are the people whom we really need in the church, we want you to come to church and be part of the church. We want you to live a transformed life. We know it’s not by choice that you are in streets but there is need for us to find a common ground to assist each other. As a church, we have work to do in as far as assisting those who are said to be lost.
” Let me urge you to go to the Registrar’s office and collect birth certificates for your children, don’t wait that the father will come. If the father rejected the pregnancy, what guarantee do we have that he will come back and take care of the child? Take birth certificates and make sure your children attend school .We want your kids to have better lives, they must not emulate how you brought them up,” she said.
One sex worker (who chose to remain anonymous) said the streets are harsh and unbearable.
“The streets are rough, we are facing all forms of abuse. Some don’t even want to use protection simply because they will be bidding money. At the end of the day you discover that we are at risk of contracting diseases, sometimes other clients refuse to pay and some can even beat you for no reason. We have grievances but we don’t have anywhere to report,” she said.
Another sex worker Emmaculate Tariro said she was failing to attend normal church services due to discrimination.
“I want to go to church and worship my Lord just like any other person, but it’s hard. I also want to sing in praise and worship. I want to preach and tell congregants what the world is like outside there, but I don’t have that platform, am denied that opportunity due to the work I do.
“It’s not by choice that I am what I am now, circumstances and situations forced me. Some of us grew without parents and no relatives thought of looking after us. I opted to find means to survive as a human being.
“I am grateful to some of local church leaders such as Bishop Lameck Ruzvidzo of CMC, he took me like his child and welcomed me. I have decided to follow Christ and shun some of the street work. Please welcome us when we visit your churches as we are not there to confront anyone but we want to follow Christ,” said Tariro.
Narrating how she escaped death by a whisker, Priscilla Munyanyi who is also into commercial sex work said she was set ablaze by a client in an incident she encountered some years back.
“I almost died. I was set ablaze by one of the clients who hooked me up for two days, violence only erupted after I told him I was withdrawing my services as he could not offer more money. So this man took advantage that I was asleep and poured paraffin before setting me on fire.
“I was rescued by neighbors who then poured water on me. I stayed in hospital for 36 months and as you can see I suffered third degree burns. Even my children were afraid to stay with me considering the wounds I had. I am grateful to God he served me, I know he has plans with my life,” she added.
A Woman Advocate, Florence Guzha who is also the director of Ebenezer Trust, a humanitarian based organization said women were wonderfully made as they carried the image of God.
“We say no to acts of discrimination, abuse and violence. When I look at a woman, I see the hand of God. A woman was wonderfully made, let’s respect women despite what they might be doing as means of survival.
“We want you girls to turn your lives to Christ, he is the only helper in times of trouble. We want you to own land, do projects and look after your families. Any man who abuse a woman goes against God’s creation,” Guzha said.

July Moyo now powerful than the president

Ladies and gentlemen, Pachitima pari kutonhora, the temperatures are dropping to minus zero at night and I feel for the homeless who sleep in bridges and those underprivileged who have no blankets to cover them during the night. I urge all those who have extra blankets kana some old clothes to give to the less privileged. Yes there is no harm in giving, torai ese amakaunganidza pamusoro pemawadrobe enyu mupe vanotambura. Remember things are getting tough everyday with prices of things going up and you wonder why they can’t just drop like what the temperatures are doing.
While we are busy pondering on how the bread prices are going up, our leaders in the government which is said to be better than heaven are busy selling us to China. Kkkk this cult called Zanu PF ma1, delivering us from one coloniser and selling us to the other. Nyika yoinda namaChina takapeta maoko. I used to hear people passing-by kuChitima saying these friends from the East have a hidden agenda while our leaders have a soft spot for their guerrilla friends and just thought its rumours but now mazvionerawo. A whole president flying choppers to Bikita with the Genarari disturbing his honeymoon only to sell our land to the Chinese. But ED ane zvivindi, kana kunyara wena. He admitted in front of the people that the whites are clever than us and they know our country better than us that’s why they continue fight to control us but now the Chinese have the upper hand. Hanzi Debeers looted diamonds while we were laughing at them for exporting soil kkk. The Chinese are doing the same. We changed the face only but the system is the same, they are looting, perhaps more than Debeers. The Chinese are taking something haasi madota, wake up and smell the coffee Scarfmore. Makapiweiko naMao Tse Tung? nxaaa mhani.
Mapombi is really worried about the situation in our hospitals, the nurses have downed tools and Scarfmore seem not to care. We are again forced to go to the Chinese vezvimaHerbs. Do we really have a minister of health in this country? basa rake nderei, someone should school me there. He should be working to ensure the welfare of health workers is addressed but instead he allow police to harass them for demanding what is theirs. But Chinyika chinoka, ma1 chaiwo, the one who is getting peanuts is busy chasing the one getting groundnut to go back to work kkk. Hanzi vari kuhora nzungu vari buzy kudzingirira vanotohora Beans. How can the police force someone who earns better than them to go to work when the strike seeks to improve even their salary.
Ladies and gentlemen the issue of poor salaries and this hyper-inflation need to be seriously addressed before the whole civil service succumb to stroke ‘yaRate neSalary’ the new killer disease. The concerns of these hospital personnel who braved the whole Covid-19 dangers attending to infected people need recognition and appreciation for their services under those risky conditions. But rambai makadzvanya ana mukoti, pamberi nemi kkkk.
On a more serious note, mukomana weShangu anoda kubatirwa pedo asati aindirira sezvakaita Chombo. This July Moyo guy should just be arrested. Iko what is it with the Moyo guys, we have July, Jonathan and we had Sibusiso. Misoro yavo haitore mushe chete vanhu ivava. July is becoming more powerful than Scarfmore and General Ampi combined. The ministry local government is cursed I think, the most corrupt find a safe haven in local government and create fortune empires at the expense masses. Kubva kuna Tyson ingori corruption chete. I thought having grey hair signifies wisdom but mmm July naChombo are the worst. I though July’s shenanigans will end with the Pomona saga but he is proving kuti haatorina nyadzi dzacho. I am beginning to think it’s true he want to be a president, infact, he has power similar to that of the president that’s why he is doing all this pasina zvaanoitwa zvake. Akaregererwa panyaya yeShangu paya and he has become more vigilant, ED beware.
Where is the country’s Attorney General, where is ZACC, when all this nonsense is taking place? The Second Republic claims to be anti-corruption chiefs but alas. Munhu wepi asingasvodi kuti vanhu varikushaya mvura yekumwa yakachena. Fire tenders are needed but as we speak, they are not a priority especially to Rural District Councils. Force them to buy road equipment and improve water provisions kwete zvemoto. Many urban authorities have the fire tenders but havana enough refuse compactors. MCC is struggling to finish the trunk sewer and start the water augmentation project yet moda vatenge mota yemoto, that’s nonsense. Ok let’s say you want them to buy those, then why inflating the prices.
Another Moyo guy of the Tsholotsho Declaration ya2004 seems to be home sick and is always trying to seek relevance by posting nonsense. Kkkk Jonso, hands-off CCC imboita zveikoko, remember the CCC guys you are dissing are the ones with keys to your coming home.

Masvingo province to launch culture month in Mwenezi

Faith Duri

The Ministry of Youth, Sports, Arts and Recreation and the National Arts Council (NAC) is going to launch Masvingo provincial culture month in Mwenezi district on June 24 2022 at Chitanga Primary School in a move meant to leave no one behind.
In an interview with TellZim News NAC provincial Arts Manager Helen Mudefi said the event is going to give an opportunity to people in the province to showcase their cultural diversity.
“It gives an opportunity to Zimbabweans to showcase their rich cultural diversity and allow networking and create partnerships with different art practitioners who will be at the event. In line with our theme ‘leaving no one behind’, the organizing committee chose a primary school to be the venue to give young people a platform to showcase and appreciate different art genres and other artistic activities scheduled for the day.
“The host district has vast, unique cultures that need to be celebrated and it’s a rainbow when we talk of their diverse linguistics. There are Venda, Ndebele, Karanga and Shangaan people.
“As NAC Zimbabwe, we appreciate and applaud the responsibilities of Chiefs who are the custodians of our culture in safeguarding and preserving different cultures for future generations. Art practitioners can market themselves and we encourage all attendees to put on their traditional attire,” said Mudefi.
She also added that there will be different activities which will be done and the culture practitioners are the ones who will be participating.
“A nation’s cultural identity and those of different localities are expressed through practices that covers music, cultural dance, praise, food, literary and craft works, religion, medicine and tools among others either traditional or contemporary.
“Through showcasing these, Zimbabwean culture is effectively communicated. Everyone is invited, arts and culture practitioners will be participating including traditional leaders too,” added Mudefi
The provincial launch of the culture month was supposed to be celebrated during the month of May.
The Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity by UNESCO in 2001 proclaimed May 21 of each year the World Day of Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development that used to be referred to as World Culture Day.
Set aside and proclaimed as such, the day is designed to promote, consume, commemorate and celebrate the world’s diverse cultures.
The day is intended to provide a chance for the flaunting of various cultural traits/heritages both in tangible and intangible forms that need to be preserved for posterity at a time when globalization is increasingly threatening with extinction lesser dominant cultures of this world.
Zimbabwe, through the efforts of NAC working in liaison with its stakeholders and partners, stands out internationally as the only nation that decided to make celebration of this day a week-long occurrence as a permanent feature of its Arts and Culture calendar every year.
The celebratory and commemorative activities carried out during Culture Week each year revolve around a particular theme depending on what will be the main topical cultural and social issue in each particular year.
This year 2022 the Ministry of Youth, Sport, Arts and Recreation decided to stretch the celebrations for the whole May to as “Culture Month” with the theme for 2022 is: Celebrating Cultural Diversity: Leaving no one behind.

Masvingo United, Grayham share spoils

Masvingo United survived a late Grayham Football Club (FC) comeback as they were held to a two-all draw by the visitors in an entertaining Eastern Region Division One fixture played at Mucheke Stadium on June 19.

Following a four-week long mid-season break, fans were treated to an entertaining display which offered value for their money as both sides sized each other in the opening stages of the game.

Una Una were unlucky not to take the lead in the 32nd minute when skipper Admire ‘Dhumbe’ Banda hit the crossbar with a powerful header only for industrious Benedict ‘Kaka’ Bere to fluff the rebound over bar.

However, the home side managed to find the opener through a neatly worked exchange of passes that saw exciting winger Tinotenda Zivanai crossing in a grass mower only for Sean Mutongi to make a cool finish late in the first half.

A limping Banda doubled Masvingo’s lead from the spot-kick slotting beyond the visiting goalkeeper’s after one of the defenders hackled down a Una Una player.

The home side was dealt a heavy blow midway the second interval losing Bere to injury and the away team capitalized on the lapse in midfield where they dictated pace and the Una Una Empire crumbled, failing to consolidate the lead.

Grayham pulled one back in 72 minutes after a defensive lapse on part of Masvingo United allowing visiting captain to hit a screamer into the top corner beyond the reach of the goalkeeper.

Whistles were blowing from Una Una faithful as they sensed danger and needed urgent substitution from coach Heydays Mugeji but a couple of minutes later, Masvingo paid dearly for poor defending in the 85th minute as they conceded the equalizer which motivated the away team that was now charging for a maximum set of three points.

… Fans blame coach for home ‘humiliation’ as usual

Masvingo United die-hard supporters have dispraised the team’s gaffer over the two-all draw at their favorite hunting ground.

The stalemate did not go down well with Una Una fans as they are viewing it as a humiliation on their doorstep.

Desire Masekesa, a Masvingo United fan said the late comeback by Grayham FC was evitable if coach ‘Hey days’ Faustina Mugeji shuffled the team during second half and replaced players who were no longer performing well due to injuries and tiredness.

“The coach should have replaced players who were no longer playing well. If he had done that I think we could have won this match.

“It was clearly visible that some of the players were tired during the last part of the match and others were limping  due to injuries but the coach failed to field fresh players from the bench. We will end up thinking the coach is sabotaging other players,” said Masekesa.

Another supporter Takura Chivandire said the draw is a result of a lack of substitution by the coach during the second half.

“The coach is failing to substitute. If we take a look at this game, during second half the left-back and the mid-fielders were no longer performing well. The coach could have substituted,” said Chivandire.

In its previous match, Masvingo United lost two-nil away to log leaders GreenFuel before the recently ended mid-season break.

However, the fans said they still have hopes of playing in the Premier Soccer League and have encouraged the team to work harder so that they can clinch sponsorship deals.

Pardon Manzara said the team still has the opportunity to showcase that they are a PSL team.

“So far so good they still have time to book their ticket into PSL; they just need to improve a little bit. They are not in a bad position,” said Manzara.

Meanwhile their cross-town rivals FC Wangu Mazodze got the better of Renco Mine 2-1 in a fixture played at the same venue on Saturday.
