Primary elections were rigged but let’s move on: ED
Upenyu Chaota
After a chaotic primary election which left many Zanu PF members dejected and crying foul, President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned disgruntled members from contesting in the July 30 harmonised polls as independent parliamentary candidates.
Masvingo North, Chiredzi West and Masvingo South have seen Zanu PF candidates who lost the irregularity-marred primaries filing for nomination as independent candidates.
“Yes we had our primaries. Some candidates won but some were rigged. Some failed in their rigging strategies but we denounce rigging. Leadership should come from the people, no imposition.
“But when we have arrived at this stage, whether you won or lost, Zanu won. If you know you are a true party cadre, you will rally behind the winning candidate.
“I will not take lightly those who contest as independent candidates because they have lost the primaries. I heard there are two or three people here who have been possessed by the spirit of Legion,” said Mnangagwa.
Mnangagwa said Zanu was bigger than any individual and if one tries to put the party into his/her pocket they will fail.
Chiredzi West incumbent legislator, Darlington Chiwa showed up at the nomination court last week in high spirits and announced his intention to contest as an independent candidate saying he will retain the seat for Zanu PF regardless of him being independent.
Chiwa stands a better chance of winning against Zanu PF’s Farai Musikavanhu and MDC Alliance’s Stanley Temba. The constituency has a total of eight candidates.
“I am standing as an independent because I have seen that the constituency cannot be snatched from me like that. If I do not contest, there will be no challenge at all and we will be donating the seat to opposition. I will win the seat and move forward with development,” said Chiwa.
In Masvingo South, Victor Vengei will contest as an independent candidate while Pascal Mudzikisi will also go it alone in Masvingo North.
All the three independent candidates have vowed to support President Mnangagwa and take their seats to Zanu PF if they win the elections.politics
MDC fields double candidates in five constituencies
Lovemore Matongo
Brighton Chiseva
MASVINGO – The MDC alliance has fielded more than two candidates in five constituencies of Masvingo province, a situation which can reduce the opposition coalition’s chances of winning.
In Zaka West, The alliance fielded Festus Dumbu and Dr William Zivenge while in Masvingo South, Lovemore Matongo and Justin Makota will both contest on the alliance’s ticket.
In Gutu district, the alliance fielded two candidates in each of the three constituencies namely Gutu North, South and West.
In Gutu North there is Juniel Manyere and Edmore Maramwidze Hamandishe while in Gutu South, Crispa Musoni and Ernest Mandigo will both contest on the alliance’s ticket.
Stanley Manguma and Knowledge Mupini are also alliance buddies who will, however, contest against one another in Gutu West unless one of them withdraws before the ballot paper is printed.
In an interview, Dr Zivenge said the matter was supposed to be addressed by the alliance’s principals whose decision would be final.
“We are currently on the ground and we are waiting for the principals to sit down. Those who will be told to withdraw will do so,” said Zivenge.
On his part Matongo, whose Masvingo South had been reserved for Makota’s Transform Zimbabwe (TZ) as part of the coalition deal, vowed to press on with his campaign.
“Our alliance partner failed to show people of Masvingo South their structures and even few people to prove that they are active in the constituency,” said Matongo.politics

Chinamasa’s bin official opening stunt invites ridicule
Shingirai Vambe
RUSAPE – Makoni Central Member of MP, Patrick Chinamasa, who is also the Minister of Finance has invited ridicule for himself after he officially opened a skip bin in the town, with many people accusing him of engaging in trivial issues in his desperation to secure re-election.
People told iTell News that for almost five years since the previous election, Chinamasa had not been seen in Rusape until this week.
He appeared in Rusape on Tuesday to commission some very small public projects including the Vengere Multi-Purpose Sports Court.
The minister’s photos cutting a ribbon to officially open a skip bin at Vengere bus Terminus was widely circulated on WhatsApp, with many people deriding him for ‘stooping so low’ and for being ‘desperate to officially open something’ for the sake of votes.
People in Vengere said Chinamasa should, instead, have done something more respectable as stopping the raw sewage which flows straight into Rusape Dam.
“He has not done anything for the people yet he is one of the most powerful government and ruling party officials. How can a whole minister come and pose for photos while officially opening something that small? There are many service delivery and developmental projects he could have implemented to boost his popularity, not what we saw today,” said one informal trader at the bus terminus.
This reporter witnessed raw effluent flowing from a septic tank at the front door of House No T12 in Vengere, with the honour of the property saying he made several reports to authorities about the problem yet nothing had been done to fix it.
Opposite this residence were many carpenters who complained that they had been promised a better operating site for several times.
“We will not vote for him because we are tired of his empty promises. He comes and opens a bin today using CDF money that he should have use long back to improve our surroundings,” said one carpenter, vowing to vote for David Tekeshe of the MDC Alliance.
Other residents said Chinamasa should have used his powerful position both in Zanu PF and government to influence better leadership at Rusape Town Council.politics
Savanna Trust brings ‘Liberation’ to Masvingo
We are excited to have the play bouncing back in 2018 – after a good run since its premiere in 2016 Besides performing in the standard theatre spaces Like Charles Austin, we will also stage performance at Mucheke hall because we believe that there are some who cannot make it to the theatres but really want to watch the play and to enlarge the play’s audience base and also spread the message of how Africa needs cleansing, re-imaging, new heroes and new action. Another key aspect is to give the play a longer lifespan.
We have realised that in Zimbabwe many productions have a very short lifespan and yet in other countries plays exist for a longer period.”. Last year, Liberation was performed at the Sadc People’s Summit in South Africa and after Masvingo performances the team will proceed back to South Africa for another run in Grahams town, South Africa, with the play this time for the National Arts Festival The production is an hour long and it was written by the renowned writer Leonard matsa and directed a South African based director: Bongani Masango Cast: Dereck Nziyakwi, Rumbidzai Hungwe, Francis Nyakuhwa, Nyaradzo Nhongonhema and Daniel Maposa.entertainment
Omar lures youth vote through sports
Cephas Shava
MWENEZI – Zanu PF Mwenezi East MP, Joosbi Omar, who will contest against Kudakwashe Bhasikiti of the MDC Alliance in the upcoming general elections, has introduced a soccer tournament as a way of mobilising the critical youth vote.
The J. Omar Cup Clash, whose tightly contested semi-finals were played at Rutenga growth point last Saturday, saw the Mwenezi East Select squad beating Chivara Crew from Masvingo Urban Ward 4, by three goals to two.
Speaking to TellZim News after the match, Omar’s projects coordinator, Knocks Mutsambwa said the idea behind the tournament was to unite the youth of diverse backgrounds and target their votes so as to maximise the ruling party’s overall vote in the forthcoming general elections.
“We have realised that the youth constitute the majority of voters, so as a way of uniting them as well as amaximising President Mnangagwa’s votes, we have decided to introduce the tournament. We are also working with our candidate for Masvingo Urban Ward 4, Tavara Mudukuti.
“As we engage the youth to mobilise support for Zanu PF, we also hope to make the tournament big by roping in teams from other districts of the province,” said Mutsambwa.
He added that the tournament’s finals, slated for June 16 in Masvingo Urban, will see participants walking way with many prizes.sport
