By Tell Reporters in Gutu

Gutu Central constituency Member of the House of Assembly Lovemore Matuke has constructed a school in his constituency.  The school which is going to be the flagship of academic excellence is situated at Matuke’s Farm about 15 km from Mpandawana town along Harare road.

                          MP Lovemore Matuke
Speaker after speaker who gathered at the ground breaking ceremony at the school last week praised Matuke for promoting education in his constituency. Villagers praised their MP saying he was taking the right steps in promoting development in their area.

However, Matuke said the school was going to  service not only people from his constituency since he was planning to set up international standards which would attract students from even beyond the country’s borders.
“We are going to be the best in terms of quality of education. We are setting high standards so that we become the province’s if not the country’s first preference whenever  parents think of sending their children to school,” said Matuke.
Teachers who attended the ceremony were already approaching Matuke seeking to be recruited at the school.
However, Matuke announced that he was not going to take teachers who do not have a very good track record.
“I will only take teachers who can bring 100 percent pass rate here,” he added.
Eight classrooms and five hostels have already been constructed at the school and work is in progress to complete all outstanding buildings before the end of the year..
Matuke said the school is going to open its doors any time from now.
The ground breaking ceremony was attended by several Members of Parliament from Masvingo Province.Local

Woman dies on way to funeral

A Gutu woman died last month while she was on her way to attend a funeral in the Chihota Communal Lands in Mashonaland East leaving her relatives dumbfounded as to what actually transpired as she was and fit and well when she embarked on the journey.
The woman, Liliosa Mutero, nee Hapanyengwi, was married to Alphonce Mutero, a teacher by profession, and was travelling to attend to her mother-in-law’s sister’s funeral when she suddenly fell ill and died. Her husband left the profession a few years ago to run his businesses in the Chirumhanzu area in the Midlands Province. Liliosa remained a teacher at Chaka Primary school until the time of her death.

                                          Liliosa Mutero

A  family spokesman, Simon Mutero, said his sister-in-law was not ill at the time she departed for the funeral but started complaining of heartache and stomach pains just after the funeral cortege had left the Masvingo-Harare highway enroute for Chihota, She started started vomiting and the combi in which she was travelling had to stop several times while other mourners tried to diagnose the problem. Her situation deteriorated and other relatives had to abandon the journey to Chihota and made a u-turn to Harare Central Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Her medical history, however, revealed that she had hypertension problems which may have resulted in her death.
Liliosa was buried  In Mutero Village in Gutu on 31 December where obituary messages from a number of organisations, including the Better Schools Programme in The midlands Province, were well received by the mourners

Parents up in arms against school head

Parents at Mutero High School in Gutu have called for the transfer of current school headmaster, Severino Shiri, alleging that he was running the school down and was involved in shady deals with suppliers.
Parents who talked to this reporter on condition of anonymity fearing that that their children will be victimised at school said it was apparent that the headmaster was lining his own pockets at the expense of developing the school. They cited a situation where one hardware shop at Gutu Mpandawana supplied the school with bakery products and confectionery, transported to the school by a public passenger carrying vehicle. The owner of the shop, Mr Dzinoreva, also won the tender to construct tow ten-roomed semi-detached  houses for four families at the school. However, Mr Dzinoreva sub-contracted the tender to an unknown contractor who receives payment for the locally recruited labour direct from the school. The same Dzinoreva sold a Brahman bull, at a cost of $2 000 the school when the mission celebrated its Golden Jubilee last year. The bull was presented  as a present to the Masvingo Catholic Diocese head, Bishop Michael Bhasera at the occasion, leading to speculation that the headmaster was attempting to silence the responsible authorities. The school ordinarily buys local livestock for the consumption of the student population which numbers more that 800. Mr Shiri is a member of the composer’s team in the diocese.
The parents complained that while the school already possessed a bus a bus levy had been introduced for a bus which the headmaster said had already been deposited for. They queries why a deposit was made before sufficient funds had been raised saying in 2010 a furniture levy was introduced.  The furniture that was bought had quickly broken down and they believe it was sub-standard.
Two years ago, an unknown company was contracted to  drill a borehole at the school to augment water supplies.  The borehole has since been vandalised while it never pumped even a liter of water into the school’s reservoir. The borehole, which is supposed to be run by a windmill, has since become derelict and a memento while it cost the school $12 000.
While he was presented with a set of written questions by this reporter Mr Shiri declined to comment only saying  tenders were awarded to the best bids. He, however, did not say what was involved in the tender procedure.Local

Gutu rural team promoted into Division 1

Mutero Football Club from Gutu District has made history by becoming the first team with a completely rural background to qualify to play in the Eastern Region Division 1.
Bankrolled by prominent Harare lawyer Ostern Mutero, who plies his trade with Sawyer and Mkushi, the team draws its players from among the school leavers in the village from which it drives its name and its environs.
The team did not play very well in the first half of its only season in Division 2 but went on to become a force to reckon with after roping in players from the nearby Dewure High School. Dewure is a soccer powerhouse that is known nationally as they have participated in a number of national competitions, including the NASH Coca Cola tournament. They have a picked a number of silver pieces in the process.

The players recruited from Dewure changed the fortunes of the team which had suffered severe defeats at the hands of well seasoned teams like 4 Brigade based Lions Football Club.  The team woke up from its slumber and went on to win the promotion playoffs that were held in Hippo Valley.
Mutero promised that he would go out of his way to ensure that the team survived in Division One even if nit me4asnt dipping into his wallet to lure more seasoned into the team which currently retains the players who played last year.Sport

Mayor distances self from prepaid vehicle parking system

ByItaiMuzondo

Masvingo City Mayor Hubert Fidze has distanced himself from the newly initiated prepaid parking system which started on this week saying he was never consulted over the issue raising suspicions that the decision could have been passed behind his back.
speaking to Tell Zimbabwe on Monday, Fidze said he was surprised by the development and he was not sure if his fellow councilors were aware of the move by his management.
“To be honest, I am not aware of this development. The residents were supposed to be informed about this development so that they make necessary adjustments well in time. That was a blunder. The management erred on this one”, said  Fidze.

I am not part of it … Hubert Fidze
Ward 10 councilor Lovemore Mufamba was equally surprised saying he was not aware of the development.
“I do not know about this at all, kutozvinzwirapano (I am getting it from here) but of cause we heard council was awaiting attorney general approval”, said Mufamba.
Acting Town Clerk, ZvapanoMunganasa was not available for comment over the unclear development as motorists have reportedly refused to pay for parking.Local

Zim immigrants future in quandary as church closes doors

 By Moses Ziyambi in Jo’burg

Hundreds of Zimbabwean immigrants housed at the Central Methodist Church in Johannesburg are living in suspense following the lapsing of the December 31 2014 deadline of a directive to vacate the building.
The building has been sheltering desperate Zimbabwean refugees and asylum seekers for the past fourteen years.
Several refugees who spoke to Tell Zimbabwe said they did not have anywhere to go as they were homeless and unemployed.
“We have been told to leave but we don’t have else to go. For some of us, this church has been our only home for the past ten years,” said John Rutete.
He also said that some of his friends have already left the place although they did not have any definite place to go.

          Central Methodist Church in Jo’burg
“We are living in suspense because we have been told that force will be used to eject those who fail to meet the deadline,” he said. “The deadline has already passed and we don’t know what will happen.”
Other immigrants, however, vowed to stay put, saying they will not accept being chucked into the streets.
“If they don’t provide alternative accommodation, I won’t go anywhere. They failed to evict us in 2010 and they will fail again this time around,” said another immigrant who requested anonymity.
Under the stewardship of Paul Verryn, the church has provided sanctuary to thousands of mainly Zimbabwean homeless immigrants over the years.
Verryn, who has earned himself enemies in his church for housing the immigrants, is set to be promoted and transferred to a different circuit. Church trustees have ordered that when he leaves,  the building can also be restored to its primary purpose of housing worshipers.
“Many have already left the building and others are in the process of leaving,” a dejected Verryn told Tell Zimbabwe, imploring well-wishers to come on board and assist.
“It has not been an easy journey for me. I hope it’s not going to be a helpless situation for the people,” he added.
Previous attempts to evict the immigrants through the courts have been strongly resisted by Verryn, who argued that it was inhuman to throw poor people into the streets.Local

Shock as villagers find over 30 pythons at grave in Zaka

Tell Reporter

There was pandemonium in Zimhofu village under Chief Ndanga in Zaka when villagers woke up to see over 30 pythons coming out of a grave last week.
Over 40 people from Zimhofu village and surrounding areas who were visibly shaken were still at the scene when Tell Zimbabwe reporters arrived on Sunday. Officials from Parks and Wildlife Management were called but they only managed to capture 20 small pythons as their efforts to capture all the snakes were hampered by heavy rains.
Village head Jeremiah Matumbike(center) is still in shock

Zimhofu village head Jeremiah Matumbike told Tell Zimbabwe that he was in shock since it was his first time to encounter such a situation. He said he was in a process of identifying people who are related to the person buried in that grave.
“I am shocked by this incident…it all started as a fairytale when people told me that there were about 10 pythons at a grave in my village. However, when we came here on Wednesday, we discovered that in fact the pythons were more than 30.
Some of the small pythons which came out of the grave

“Everyone is in shock and I am now in a process of identifying people who might be related to the person buried in this grave,” said Matumbike.
Matumbike said he could not rule out that there could be something mysterious behind the coming out of the pythons.
“We have never seen not even one python here so where are these ones coming from… I think this is mysterious and the relatives of the person buried here will assist us in mapping the way forward,” said Matumbike.
Officials from Parks could not be drawn into commenting.
Chief Ndanga said he was aware of the incident. Local.

Man accepts lobola from three ‘in-laws’ for one daughter

0
In an incident that left villagers of Madzenga in Bikita tongue-tied a man turned her 23-year-old daughter into a ”money link” when he allegedly accepted bride price from three men for her, Headman Mpakwa (Clemence Munyika) has confirmed.
Headman Mpakwa told TellZim that the incident which has become a festive treatment for the villagers occurred on Monday.
Tafirenyika Munhundishe surprised all and sundry by accepting bride price from two other men for his daughter, Rudo Munhundishe despite her being already married to Cephas Hwari of the same village.
He said Tafirenyika used the same mediator in all occasions adding that he had turned his daughter into a “money link” where he would use her to get money.
“I can confirm receiving a report to that effect. Tafirenyika is said to have wittingly or unwittingly accepted lobola money from two other men for Rudo yet Rudo is married to Hwari. The mother of two is said to have connived with her father and the two men fell for the trick, hook line and sinker,” said Headman Mpakwa.
He said the two duped men were said to have been told on different occasions that Rudo was a single mother and they all proposed to marry her.
“Some time last week Rudo’s antics came into light when the other man went to his in-laws to collect his wife since he had paid lobola. Upon reaching Munhundishe homestead, he was told he found Rudo not home as she was at her first husband’s homestead in the same village,” he said.
Headman Mpakwa added, “This raised the man’s eyebrows who demanded to see her wife. Within a few hours, the third man also came and was taken aside by the cunning Tafirenyika, apparently for him not to meet with the other husband.”
He said subsequently the two men realised that they had been duped by Tafirenyika and Rudo after which they remonstrated through threatening to report the two for extortion to the police.
“The two men had each paid $5000 as lobola with each promising to complete the outstanding pride price of $1500 later,” he said.
He said the case was expected to appear before his court yesterday and had taken the matter to the magistrate court where he seeks to get proper legal guidance but he would go ahead with the trial.
“I am trying the case today and I have summoned the father of the woman, and the woman herself. The deprived men and original husband will be there before the courts as witnesses to this unique case,” he said without mentioning the identities of the two men.
When contacted late yesterday Headman Mpakwa said he was still in the middle of trying the matter but said only Rudo, Tafirenyika and Hwari had shown up while the other two “husbands” did not attend the court despite being summoned to the court to give evidence.
He said the traditional had not given out a verdict but was expected by the end of day yesterday.
“We are still in the middle of court proceedings as I speak and Tafirenyika is giving evidence. I cannot preempt at this point in time, just be patient and wait for the verdict. I have to check the identities of the two husbands,” he said.local

Our councillors have potential to do better : Residents

0
Tell Reporters

Residents from all wards in Masvingo city have described their councillors as hardworking and responsible. Although some said there were areas which need urgent attention, it was unanimously agreed that the current crop of councillors have great potential in as far as local governance is concerned. When these councillors were elected in 2013, residents thought they were going to be the worst in the history of the city, however, they have proved otherwise.
Our team went out to get the views of the people concerning the performance of each councillor in 2014 and residents placed the 10 councillors in four groups.
Group one comprises of Godfrey Kurauone of ward 4, Lovemore Mufamba of ward 10 and Masvingo mayor Hubert Fidze of ward 6. The three were rated the most hardworking this year. The mayor has been described as the most improved politician in the council. When he was elected, he had no idea in terms of public relations and at times issuing statements that would turn against him. Initially people thought that there was a great blunder in voting Fidze to be the mayor. However, 2014 has groomed him to become a mature and fine politician who would be there for the people. In fact, our reporters were informed that Fidze is likely to be the best mayor in the history of Masvingo. Fidze is being praised for being there with the people. ” He is always communicating, he is good in giving feedback, he demystified the position of the mayor because we are always with him,” said another interviewee. Although he is the youngest in council, Kurauone’s performance this year was impressing – his contribution in the debates as well as influence on the final decision by the council cannot be downplayed. Kurauone therefore remained popular in his ward as he constantly engages the youths for feedback – his public relations strategy is not bad.
Godfrey Kurauone is in Group 1

Councillor Mufamba has remained in touch with his ward. He is always there to assist the people in ward 10. With several projects in his ward and immense contribution in council chambers, Mufamba has remained a true representative of the people.
Lovemore Mufamba is in Group 1

Some people were saying Mufamba has a potential to deliver even if given a higher office. They were pegged at 76 %.

Mayor Hubert Fidze is in Group 1
Group two comprises of Councillor Gashia Mundondo of ward 1, Cllr Daniel Mberikwazvo of ward 5, Cllr Richard Musekiwa of ward 7 and Cllr Tasicio Mandava of ward 2. The four councillors have remained fairly visible in their wards. They are approachable and have potential to be in group one but sometimes they are not active in debates in council chambers. The four councillors are still popular in their wards but they also need to come up with initiatives that will see them having more interaction with the people. They were pegged at 65 %.
Group three comprises of Cllr Against Chiteme of ward 8 and Cllr Babylon Beta of ward 9. The two need to improve in making their voices heard in chambers. Residents said the two councillors are people shy since they are hesitant in meeting them for feedback. They are rarely heard in the press. However, they have been described as the only two who are unlikely to be involved in any scandal throughout their term. ” These two act like twins, they are very calm and innocent …however we want them to come to us with feedback,” said another resident. They were pegged at 51%.
Group four comprises of one man of his own class, Cllr  David Chiwara of ward 3. Ironically, Chiwara is the deputy mayor. A survey by Tell Zimbabwe revealed that 9 out 10 people in Masvingo think that the city does not have a deputy mayor. Chiwara remains the least known deputy mayor in the history of the city. His performance is pegged at 30 %. Residents said Chiwara’s new year resolution number one should be that of becoming a true representative of the people. Some said the council should reconsider giving Chiwara a vote of no confidence.

David Chiwara was rated the worst in 2014
“We don’t want placeholders, they must just give him a vote of no confidence and elect another deputy mayor for the city,” said another resident.

Farmers plant untreated seeds

….as GMB fails to pay for maize sold last season

    Thembinkosi Ncube / Sifelani Murambiwa

Farmers in various parts of Masvingo province are planting untreated maize seed since they have failed to raise money for the inputs amid reports that Grain Marketing Board (GMB) is yet to give them money for the 2013-2014 agricultural produce.
A survey by Tell Zimbabwe has revealed that 2014- 2015 farming season is likely to be the worst farming period for communal farmers who do not have any clue on how to get adequate inputs.
Farmers in Summerton resettlement area said GMB was being unfair to them since they did not have any alternative source of income. Others said they only got a 2kg packet of tread maize seed from donation by Dr Grace Mugabe during her meet the people rally.
“These guys (GMB) are very cruel, how do they expect us to survive? I sold several tonnes of maize last season but I am not paid even a cent,” said a farmer from Summerton.
Some said they relied on the money from the sales of their grains to look after their families but it has been hard for them to make ends meet.
“We have families to support and we hoped that the money from the sales of our agricultural produce was going to help us in fending for our families but right now our children have arrears at their schools because we have not been able to pay for their fees. The worst part is that the people from GMB have not yet addressed us regarding the matter and the silence is killing us”, said Nyaradzai Ezrah.
“We need to buy seeds, fertilizer and chemicals so that we can have better yields in the end but we cannot do that because the money has not been paid. Right now we have planted seeds from our granaries and we cannot afford to buy enough fertilizer and other critical inputs. We have lost our faith in GMB”, said another affected farmer.
The farmers are calling on the government to intervene and they also hope that the government relief which aims at helping about a million households with farming inputs will reach their area soon.
Most farmers in Summerton depend on farming to send their children to school and for all their needs.

Zimbabwe Farmer’s Union (ZFU) Masvingo provincial director, Jeremiah Chimwanda could not be drawn in to commenting saying he needed to be cleared by his boss who was out of the country by the time of this publication.
“I cannot comment on that matter unless I get clearance from my boss in Harare but it’s quite unfortunate that he is out of the country”, said Chimwanda.
Meanwhile farmers in Chiredzi said they did not manage to sell their produce for last season since they failed to raise money for transport to the nearest GMB.
Founder and director of Community Initiatives for Sustainable Development Trust  Aspicious Ndlovu said farmers were still stuck with tonnes of maize, sorghum which now rotting due to poor storage facilities.
“Most communal farmers in Chiredzi are running losses because GMB did not honour its promise of paying for grain deliveries hence farmers failed to raise transport fees of US$ 40 per tonne which was being charged by transporters,” said Ndlovu. local
