Chidi school block officially opened

The 5th of August was a relieving moment for Chidi villagers in Zaka as the community’s school block which had been destroyed by heavy rains in December last year was successfully restored and officially opened.
The block was officially opened by the District Education Officer Biullah Shambambeva as Zaka North Member of Parliament Robson Mavhenyengwa witnessed the event.
Mavhenyengwa was the man behind the repair of the classroom block with the aid of PLAN International.
The Member of Parliament who also donated books to the school on the event said the move was very important  to the people in his constituency.
“This is a breath taking moment to us as the people of Chidi   village – it is worth noting that we have managed to accomplish this task in a very difficult moment. This disaster came at a time when the Tokwe – Mkosi disaster also befell our beloved province or can I say sister constituency, so sourcing for aid when there was such a bigger sister problem was not easy,” said Mavhenyengwa.

Shambambeva who was the guest of honor, urged the villagers to take advantage of the reconstructed block to enroll for adult education.
Enoch Mhlanga the headmaster was thankful and promised to continue accelerating towards quality education as the school has continually advanced its pass rate since 2009.
Chidi  Primary School houses 261 pupils altogether.

Chingwizi saga continues : 29 appear in court

Twenty nine out of 300  flood victims arrested at  Chingwizi holding camp yesterday appeared before Chiredzi Magistrate Tayengwa Chibanda  facing charges of  Public Violence as Defined in Section 36 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23.

The state lead by Liberty Hove said that Patrick Chaungwesha Chinounda  and 28others others allegedly ran amok at Chingwizi Holding Camp throwing stones at the police leading to them disarming the cops as well as injuring some villagers.
A team of four defence lawyers from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights Phillip Shumba, Collen Maboke, Martin Mureri and Blessing Nyamaropa registered complains against the Zimbabwe Republic Police saying the arrest of the victims was unconstitutional.

“We would like to highlight some of the complains we have against the police to this hounarable court. There are a number of accused persons who were assaulted by the police. Accused number one Patrick Changwesha was assaulted by police, upon his arrest he was taken to
the site where a burnt police vehicle was and he was humiliated with some police officers saying they wanted to salute him. They assaulted him using open hands and button sticks,” said Shumba.
The lawyers further allege that the police denied their clients legal representation. They also said police denied accused persons food whilst in custody at Triangle Police camp.

Nyamaropa also quizzed the state to dismiss the case saying the twenty-nine were unlawfully arrested.
“It is very clear that there were violations of human rights therefore the arrest is unlawful and accused persons must be released. If you look at Section 50 subsection 8 of the new Constitution there are set guidelines as to how one must be arrested and treated. This arrest
did not meet all of that hence it is illegal,” said Nyamaropa.

State witness Inspector Victor Chinoni said the accused persons disarmed the police with some of the ended up wielding police shields and teargases.
“The police were running after the accused persons, tripping them and arresting them. No one was assaulted by the police by only minimum force was used to affect the arrest,” said Chinoni.
Chinoni however said he is not aware of Triangle Police Station’s holding cells but he insisted that the accused were not over crowded since he found them well spaced when they were seated yesterday morning.
Magistrate Chibanda however said because of time the accused would sleep at remand prison as the defense had said the conditions at the police cells are inhuman.

The matter will continue today at 1430 hours.

Residents from Runyararo West and Victoria Range said the Masvingo City Council has put their health in danger by continuously using the Maparanyanga rubbish dumping site despite its nearness to the residential area.
  Residents said there was need for urgent relocation of the rubbish dumping site.
“We are in serious danger of getting diseases …there are a lot flies in this whole area and choking smell and smoke from the dumping area encroach into our houses every day,” said a resident who declined to be named.
They also say that when the council burn the rubbish, the dark clouds of smoke which engulf their area force them to temporarily vacate their houses.
 One resident identified as Mai Mukanya said that she is asthmatic and when the smoke from the dumping site encroaches her home, which is just across the street from the dumping area, she finds it difficult to breathe.
“My asthmatic condition doesn’t favour polluted air, I find it difficult to breathe under these conditions and I hope the responsible authorities will act quickly to relocate this site from our doorsteps”, she said.

The city council says it proposed this site because, by then, it was far from the residential areas and now because of the further expansion of the residential areas, they are working hard to try and relocate this site to a much safer place.

Ex-Jaunda band member to launch album

Ngonidzashe  Chinovava aka Baba Ra an ex Chikumuramabhachi member led by Emmanuel ‘Uncle Jahunda’ Chibi has gone solo.
Baba Ra has since recorded his first contemporary reggae album entitled ‘Usavhunduka’ to be launched on the 29th of August at Masvingo Sports Club.
The seven track album features hit tracks like, ‘Bobo’, ‘Ndoramba Ndakashinga’ and ‘Usavhunduka’.
Baba Ra noted that his sudden change of genre was motivated by his love of reggae and the need to encourage the youths through his real life experiences which fill the lyrics of his music.
“I am now doing contemporary reggae and I do this towards educating the youths through my real life experience. More is to be expected after the launch of my first album at Masvingo Sports Club on the 29th of this month so fans must be geared for lots of entertainment”, said Baba Ra.
He was also quick to note that there is no bad blood between him and Jahunda as the word has gone in the streets.
“There is no bad blood between me and Uncle Jahunda. He is actually my mentor and like a father to me”, added Baba Ra.

Jahunda also cleared the air and noted that he and Baba Ra are still working together and in good books.
“We are still working together within the Masvingo family of artists and on individual capacity.

FARMERS URGED TO LOOK AFTER THEIR LIVESTOCK

Farmers settled along Masvingo highways were recently urged to look after their livestock because they were causing a mayhem in the major highways of the country leading to serious accidents and loss of lives.
Speaking at a meeting in Chidzikwe resettlement area this week, chairman of the Beef Producers Association in Masvingo,  Robert Makado, urged all the farmers in the province and the nation at large to take good care of their livestock to avoid unnecessary road accidents.
He also urged farmers to erect fences which will help lessen straying of livestock.
“You must look after your livestock well because if you don’t keep an eye on them they end up wandering in the highways where they cause fatal accidents”, he said.
With reference to an accident which occurred along the Masvingo-Beitbridge road which killed 13 herds of cattle recently, Mr Makado said farmers should never allow such incidences to happen because people’s lives will be in serious jeopardy.

“It is so sad to hear that people have lost their lives in a road accident where livestock is involved. Farmers we take it upon ourselves to ensure safety of our livestock and safety of the passengers on the road. Accidents should be as a result of other things not because of livestock”, he added.
He further pointed out that the farmers should aim at maximising profits and that this can only be achieved when farmers take care of their livestock not only from the roads but also by treating them in the first sight of a disease.
“Vaccinating our cattle will help us come up with a good yield in the end….we must avoid losing our livestock so as to make a good profit from the sales of our cattle”, Mr Makado said.

Masvingo City Council town clerk Adolf Gusha has blamed the Ministry of Local Governance’s blanket freeze on recruitment saying the move has crippled the local authority in terms of quality service delivery.
Gusha said this in the recent full council meeting responding to the late presentation of audited reports for year ending 2012 with the 2013 report  yet presented.
 “There is a critical shortage in the treasury department and there are critical vacant positions such as that of the accountant and assistant accountant in particular.
“We as Masvingo City Council wish to fill these posts as they have affected the swift sailing of operations but it is unfortunate that there is a blanket freeze on posts nationwide so we cannot do anything. We have since sent requests to the Ministry for the critical attention needed within the treasury department and we are waiting for the response”’ said Gusha.


The council presented the 2012 report this July and expressed that they are still working on the 2013 report which is yet to be given but however promised that the 2014 report will come in time.
“We however promise to put all efforts that the 2014 audited report come out in time”, added Gusha.
The city council has been under attack especially from the residents’ association for poor service delivery.Local

YOCAF Roars into Life

This year’s edition of the Youth Cultural Arts Fesival (YOCAF) has roared into action at the City Council Town Hall in Masvingo under the theme “I am an artist”.
The festival is to run from the 31st July to the 2nd of August this year.
The official opening has seen promising performances from the ZCC Junior’s Band along with stand up comedies from different groups.
Leroy Gono the YOCAF director promised a lot of action as he noted that the event has seen a great improvement in terms of attendance as compared to last year.
“YOCAF is growing bigger and better as attendance has risen from nine participating schools last year to 14 this year from within and beyond the province.
“This is thereby a promising event and all I can say is that be geared for exciting action”, said Gono.

The guest of honor, Hubert Fidze the Mayor of Masvingo noted this event as a breathing moment in the city of Masvingo after a week of misfortunes for the city which saw a series of terrible accidents including a council vehicle that killed a two month old baby on Monday.
“After a week of misfortunes in our beloved city we are happy that something good and encouraging (YOCAF) has stepped onto our door step.
“In support of this colorful event, as a city, we thereby promise you a clean environment and very clean sources of water”, said Fidze.
More action is still expected inform of music, poetry and drama from participating schools and star performances.
YOCAF is an initiative which is meant to build young people’s creativity, self confidence and self esteem as it uses arts to drive and share their ideas.

Another Gutu teacher caught having sex with student

A relief teacher based at Chikwiza Secondary School in Gutu was recently caught red-handed making love with a pupil he teaches while at the girl’s home. The parents of the girl apprehended the teacher who was said to be drunk after having one too many on his way from inter-schools sports competitions held at a nearby school recently.
Sources say that Chiwara arranged with the girl to spend the night at the girls residence but all hell broke loose when the girls’s parents returned home earlier than expected and discovered that there was someone in their house. It is said that the parents first saw an empty bottle of beer and started suspecting that there was something wrong. It is alleged that when the parents made a check in where their girl child was sleeping, both Chiwara and the girl ran away leaving the parents shell-shocked. The parents of the child reported the matter to the headmaster who tried to cool the tempers of the parents by suggesting they solve the issue traditionally but the parents did not agree to it.
Sources say that when the girl was asked whether he was in love with Chiwara at first she refused but later on admitted after his father threatened to beat her. The father of the child further unearthed evidence incriminating Chiwara in form of text messages which Chiwara sent to the girl traceable to Chiwara’s mobile numbers
Chiwara is a Bcom(Banking and Finance) graduate of the National University of Science and Technology.
A report has already been made to Gutu district. Chiwara’s case comes barely less than two weeks after another teacher was fired for improper association at a primary school just a miles from Chikwiza secondary school.Local

Masvingo Artists Get Flea Markets

Masvingo Family of Artists Association, an organization which was established to improve the welfare of local artists, has acquired flea markets stands for its members.
The association president, Luckson Mutsambwa, confirmed the development saying  the association has entered into an agreement with Masvingo City Council in which the later agreed to offer flea markets stands to Masvingo Family of Artists Association.
“I want to thank Masvingo City Council for the flea market stands they gave us recently. The markets stands are at Chitima, Takawira and Farai. All members of the association will benefit from the project and we hope that the projects will help in income-generating projects.
“ We believe artists should live a decent life just like any other professionals. We will continue to lobby for a better life for artists in the province,” said Mutsambwa.
The association’s chairperson Purazen Jakata also noted that they want to establish a programme that will mentor talent from the grassroots inform of Arts scholarships and are hopeful to acquire residential stands for artists as their careers usually go in vain.
“Our aim is that we want to mentor artists from Masvingo; identify and nurture young talents from the province.
“We also intend to provide scholarships to upcoming artists. We also hope to acquire residential stands for our artists to benefit from their work as more of them usually fail to get a tangible reward from the arts industry”’ said Jakata.

Chibi High girls win NASH Volleyball Under 20 Championship

The 2013 Nash Under 20 Volleyball champions retained their glory in this year’s competition held at Kwekwe High School last weekend with Chibi High School girl’s teams managing to win the cup for the second time in a role after defeating Marondera High School 3 – 1 in the finals.
.Cornway High School scooped the championship in the boy’s category after defeating Churchill Boys High 3 – 2 in a decider set making them champions for the third time in a role.
Visitation Makumbe High School took the third runners in the competition after defeating Mazowe High School 2 – 1.
Mufakose 2 High School took the third position after battling it out with Pamushana High School for which they won 2 – 0.
Churchihill’s Keith Machakaire was crowned player of the tournament boys along with Tsisti Makoni of Marondera High School for the girls.
To grace the event was NASH President Johnson Madhuku who promised to continue supplying quality sport around the nation.

Uncle Jaunda is now teaching volleyball at Chibi
