Mnangagwa spending spree and the ghost of Mugabe

President Mnangagwa is in China with a large entourage of cabinet ministers, business leaders others who can best be described as a band of parasites. What is most disappointing about the trip is the large size of that delegation as well as the hiring of a luxurious private plane for the journey. Mnangagwa seems to be failing in many things, more especially those that many people had expected him to easily do differently from the way they were done by his predecessor Robert Mugabe. It is common knowledge that Mugabe liked globe-trotting with large entourages made up largely of parasitic blood suckers who brought nothing of value to the country. Mnangagwa seems to be doing just the same. We did not expect him to take along so many people and to snub the much cheaper Air Zimbabwe that is run by his own government in favour of a Swiss-owned private charter plane. He should have known better that the country is in a severe economic crisis that makes the blowing up of over US$2 million on a foreign junket outrageously extravagant. Some people with a stricter sense of austerity even suggested that whatever Mnangagwa is discussing with his Chinese friends could still have been accomplished through video conference. China does not inspire confidence in many people after all, given the dominant perception of Chinese complicit in the rape of this country’s economy and the prolongation of Robert Mugabe’s brutal rule. The Chinese are known in Zimbabwe more as looters of local wealth than as descent investors in pursuit of a fair profit therefore, for a leader to blow even more of the scarce national resources seeking deals with such a people is hardly deserving of respect. Mugabe went there a few years ago and he came back with a bagful of ‘megadeals’ as his State-owned media termed them, but nothing came out of them. Instead the Chinese have continued to externalise hundreds of millions of dollars from the country as shown by Mnangagwa’s own list of looters. We hope the President will from today onwards try to make decisions that will make him more popular with the people of this country and differentiate him more from Mugabe. We also hope he will get better advisers as his current team has not been doing him any good.

An enraged Chanayu prepares to leave after his diatribe against TellZim News

…seething party executive members storm TellZim News

…Matutu, Fidze will never represent our party

Upenyu Chaota

Irked by a story published in TellZim News last week exposing a clandestine plot to oust all the sitting MDC-T Masvingo urban councillors through imposition of new candidates, the district chairperson Murangamwa Chanyau and provincial administrator Peter Chigaba stormed the newspaper’s offices and threw a fit of rage, accusing the paper of peddling a Zanu PF agenda.

Chigaba and Chanyau took turns to fire expletives while demanding to see who had written the story headlined ‘MDC-T Masvingo plots coup on sitting councillors’.

The duo drove an Isuzu truck which was emblazoned with party colours and logo into TellZim News’ premises, with a visibly drunk Chanyau, without bothering to provide the slightest sliver of proof, claiming that the newspaper is being bribed by Zanu PF to fight MDC-T.

The two went into overdrive accusing the paper of doing the bidding for former MDC-T legislator for Masvingo Urban, Tongai Matutu while disparaging his rival Takanayi Mureyi. Much of their theatrics at the offices was captured on video.

“Munoda change here imi? Change yacho inouya sei kana muchinyora muchidai. Muri kutengwa neZanu (PF) imi. (Do you want change in this country? How can change be possible when you write stories like this? You are being bribed by Zanu to write this trash) We expect Herald kuti idaro kwete imi (We expect Herald to write such negative stories, and not you),” charged Chigaba.

In his tirade, Chanyau, who was the most vocal, accused all in the newsroom of receiving bribes from Matutu whom he claimed was buying beer for them.

“Manje Matutu wenyu haatongi even (Hubert) Fidze wacho. Matutu is not MDC (Matutu and Fidze will never represent the party),” charged Chanyau.

Fidze is the current City of Masvingo mayor and councillor for Ward 6, but his position, as well as those held by four other sitting MDC-T councillors, has been earmarked for somebody else who is favoured by a faction of new comers.

“Munotadza kunyora about Zanu PF; hamuna kudzidza mose imi. Manje MDC ichangotonga chero mukainyora zvakashata (You are writing bad about us instead of Zanu PF. You are not educated at all – we are going to rule this country),” said Chanyau seething with anger.

TellZim News editor Passmore Kuzipa managed to douse the fire by telling the duo that the paper did not pander to the whims of any political party; whether MDC or Zanu PF, but was guided by the journalism principles of non-partisanship, balance, fairness among many others.

Kuzipa, who is also the Masvingo provincial chairman for the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) said the media must not have sacred cows.

“We have people who want to be politicians and journalists at the same time; such people must go to journalism school first before they cause chaos in newsrooms. We do not have sacred cows but we are guided by journalism ethics of non-partisan reporting, balance, fair and accurate among many others. We pardon these overzealous politicians but we encourage them to go to school so that they may have an appreciation of how the media operate,” said Kuzipa.

Politicians exploiting our fears, Chiredzi vendors complain

The ground that Musikavanhu prepared to develop proper market stalls for vendors

Anesushe Mamhute

CHIREDZI – Vendors in the town feel they are being used as political fodder by prospective candidates with interests in the Chiredzi West parliamentary seat, TellZim News has learnt.

At the root of their disgruntlement is the power struggle between current council chairperson Francis Moyo and his rival Farai Musikavanhu.

Vendors say the rivalry has seen them being used as political pawns.

At a meeting convened by the informal traders along Msasa Road last week, vendors said the tussle between Moyo and Musikavanhu was now affecting them.

Moyo is accused of ‘misleading’ vendors that the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing July Moyo had reversed Operation Restore Order and had authorised that they be allowed to go back to their undesignated selling points.

Musikavanhu, on the other hand, is blamed for apparently failing to complete the market structures that he volunteered to build for vendors opposite N. Richards Hardware.

“Moyo misled us by claiming that July Moyo had authorised that we go back to our old selling points where we had been removed through Operation Restore Order. He did that just for political expediency just like Musikavanhu did when he gave us false hope that we will have proper market stalls in no time,” said one trader.

Solomon Ndarowa, who chairs an association of the vendors, revealed that Moyo had come to him with a folder purportedly containing a letter from the minister authorising vendors to continue selling their wares wherever they wanted.

“Moyo came to me with a folder which had papers but he declined to show them to me though he claimed there was a letter from the minister.

“I then approached the office of the District Administrator to get clarification and I was told no letter of that nature had been received,” said Ndarowa.

A vendor who preferred anonymity said politicians should not be allowed to play around with vendors’ vulnerabilities for political gain.

“All those politicians who seek to be voted into office should come out clear but not exploit our fears for their own selfish interests,” said the trader.

Chiredzi West has emerged as a flashpoint for serious, and sometimes dishonest political contestation among ruling Zanu PF party politicians, with incumbent Member of Parliament Darlington Chiwa fighting to defend his seat.

SIMBI set to reopen

MASVINGO- Having folded in 2014, the Sponge Iron Mining and Beneficiation Industry (SIMBI), a local Indian owned sponge iron industry is set to re-start operations in a few weeks’ time after having closed shop for three years owing to economic hardships.

SIMBI general manager, Baggam Anand Rao said their company closure was due to the depression of world steel market and other economic challenges that bedevilled the country.

He further explained that the company has the capacity of producing 100 tonnes per week and 2 500 to 3 000 tonnes of sponge iron per month that will be processed in Redcliff to become pure iron for local use and export.

At full throttle, SIMBI has the capacity to generate $3 million per year.

“SIMBI will reopen in a few weeks’ time as we are just finalising the paper work. We have the capacity to employ over 300 locals with about 150 working at the site and 140 people working at our iron ore mining site in Glenlivet,” said Anand Rao.

Addressing journalists and other stakeholders at a briefing held at the company’s site, Minister of State for Masvingo Provincial Affairs, Josiah Dunira Hungwe applauded the company for being the first to take steps towards resuscitation.

“The idea of reopening industries is to our advantage as the government and the community at large since that will provide jobs for the local people. We will support you and challenge other local companies to reopen as well.

“Efforts to resuscitate Cold Storage Commission (CSC) and Mashava Mining Company are at an advanced stage to improve the livelihood of the people in Masvingo,” Hungwe said.

CHIPINGE – The revived United Church of Christ in Zimbabwe (UCCZ) school choir competitions recently held at Chikore High Schools have been described as critical in the promotion of worship music culture among school children.

Participants in the competitions included such schools as Mount Selinda, Chikore, Emerald, Middlerands, Chinaa and Watershed as well as others under the UCCZ banner.

Danster Mundeta of Chikore Mission praised the competitions, saying they amounted to the revival the old worship choir culture long lost back in the 1980s or perhaps in the 1960s.

“We are pleased that people have come to realise the importance of bringing this culture back, all in the name of advancing the word of the Lord among our children,” said Mundeta.

The event was sponsored by prominent businessman Philemon Mlambo, a former Chikore High School pupil and devout UCCZ member.

The event was graced by UCCZ president Freeman Ngadziore and other senior UCCZ members, pastors, school heads and their deputies, teachers, former pupils and members of the UCCZ education council among many others.

Mount Selinda emerged as the best choir, followed by Chikore while Emerald Secondary School finished at number three.

Chikore High choir master, Taurai Mukutyu said he was content with the second prize as it came at a price of hard work against strong competitors.

“We worked very hard. Our competitors were very good so we are pleased with our current achievement although the ultimate objective is to keep on improving,” said Mukutyu.

Chikore High School head, Stella Mudiwa said she was pleased by the performance of her team in particular and the organisation of the competitions in general.

“It is humbling that we were hosts of such a grand event and everything went well. We congratulate the winners and encourage all others to keep on working hard,” said Mudiwa.

She thanked Mlambo for committing his time and resources to sponsor the competitions that she said played a part in promoting the culture of Ndau people as the hymns were sung in their language.

CHIPINGE – Many people converged at different congregations of the United Church of Christ (UCCZ) to celebrate Easter last week, with the preceding Palm Sunday attracting even bigger crowds of both the young and the old.
UCCZ cleric, Rodrick Nerah, of Chikore Mission Circuit, said he was pleased by the zeal that existed among the faithful to honour the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
“The whole Easter is very important beginning with Palm Sunday and we saw many of our congregants coming to celebrate the event. The whole day was filled with symbolism and we thank God everything went well with our congregants showing their desire to please God.
“We believe that if you do righteous deeds as taught by the Lord, your soul will also go to heaven and you will have eternal life after death,” said Nerah.
He encouraged UCCZ followers to keep doing good all the time so that their faith can be strengthened.
“We don’t want to be seen as people who only try to do what is right during the Easter holidays but we want to always be good people throughout the year. We must be good neighbours and we must love one another as well as forgive each other just as our Lord Jesus Christ taught us,” said Nerah.

.… case sucks in Gutu RDC engineer

Precila Takabvirakare

MPANDAWANA – Businessman Christopher Munyaradzi last week appeared before magistrate Edwin Marecha facing charges of defrauding Ephraim Kwangwa of US$6 372 by selling him somebody else’s residential stand.
He was charged with fraud as defined in Section 136 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
The case sucks in Gutu Rural District Council engineer Vambai Shenjere whom the court, however, found to have no immediate case to answer.
Munyaradzi pleaded guilty to the charge and the case was moved to May 03 for continuation of trial.
It was the State’s case that on a date not known by the prosecutor but in the month of August 2017, Kwangwa approached Munyaradzi to tell him he wanted to swap his motor vehicle for a residential stand.
Munyaradzi agreed to enter into the deal and on August 31, 2017, Kwangwa requested that he be shown the stand.
Munyaradzi referred Kwangwa to Shenejere who took him to the stand in Old Location Extension Gutu.
After being shown the stand, Kwangwa and Munyaradzi made an agreement of sale affidavit that was commissioned by magistrate Marecha.
Kwangwa was then given a recommendation letter by Shenjere so that he could make his lease payments, and he made an initial payment of US$80 but later made the final payment of US$292.
The court heard that it was upon the payment of the last instalment for his lease when he was advised that the stand was already occupied by Josiah Matanga.
Investigations were made into the matter and it was established that the stand never belonged to the accused person but to Matanga whose name also appeared on the lease register.
The revelations led to the arrest of Munyaradzi.

Timb urged to recognise Chiredzi tobacco

People tour Mabhunu’s tobacco field

CHIREDZI – The Agricultural Marketing Authority (Ama) has challenged the Tobacco Industry Marketing Board (Timb) to recognise the Lowveld as a tobacco-growing region as proven by Josias Mabhunu who has piloted a very successful project.
Speaking during a field day held last week in Triangle Pension Area Ward 28, Ama Southern Region manager, Simon Pande said Timb needed to work hand in glove with budding tobacco farmers in the Lowveld.
He said local farmers had proven their worth, and had shown great potential to produce much more if given the necessary support.
“As Ama, we do not specialise in the marketing of tobacco but Timb does. We will persuade them to recognise Chiredzi tobacco growers so that they too will be provided with the much-needed expertise and inputs,” said Pande.
Pande also urged agricultural extension officers to invest their energies in the provision of expertise to new farmers especially during the curing stage.
“Extension officers, this is the time to show your presence by providing technical support to the farmer who has piloted this project in our region. The curing stage is the most important as it determines the quality of the leaf.
“Humidity and temperature in the curing house have to be measured; meaning there is need for a thermometer and hygrometer. Mabhunu’s curing house only has a thermometer,” said Pande.
Mabhunu, who is expecting more than 3 000 kg of tobacco from his 1.3 hectare plot, said he was emulating tobacco farmers in Mhondoro.
“I haven’t acquired adequate knowledge in the production of tobacco. I just got a rough idea from the time I was buying maize from Mhondoro for resell elsewhere. So it’s expensive to travel from Chiredzi to Mhondoro to get the knowledge,” said Mabhunu.

Octogenarian in court for raping nine-year-old

Rutendo Chitore
GWERU – An 84-year-old man, Forward Akundile, recently appeared before magistrate Morgan Nemadire here on charges of raping a nine-year-old daughter of his former tenant.
The State’s case, as presented by prosecutor Lloyd Mavhisa, are that on May 5, 2017 at around 14:00 hrs, the complainant and her brother, aged 12 years, were sent by their mother to her friend’s place to collect a disc.
The girl was left by her brother by the road near the accused’s place and the brother was accompanied with his friend.
The complainant then entered Akundile’s gate, greeted him and sat on one of the chair which was in the garden.
Akundile unlocked one of his tenants’ door and told the child to enter into the room and promised to give her money if she obeyed his instructions.
Akundile lifted the child and made her to lie facing upwards on the bed before threatening to beat her up if she made any noise.
The State alleges that Akundile removed the girl’s underwear and raped her once after which he gave the little girl a dollar to buy her silence.
An aunt later noticed that the girl was acting strangely and when she quizzed her, the girl disclosed the matter.
The matter was reported to Nehanda Police Station leading to Akundile’s arrest.
Akundile denied the charges saying he was being framed by a scornful relative whom he kicked out of his house for failure to pay rentals.
The case was posted to a further date for sentencing.
