13 April 2017, BancABC, part of AtlasMara, through its division BancEasy, last Friday officially commissioned a brand new borehole at Chitonhora High School in Mbizvo village under Chief Ndanga in Zaka North, bringing relief to a community which had been experiencing severe problems getting access to clean water.
The borehole was drilled by BancABC as part of its broader social responsibility programme in communities served by the bank.
The new borehole will service the high school which has around 1 700 pupils, the adjacent Chimedza Primary School with over 600 pupils, as well as the surrounding communities that have been fetching untreated water mainly from the nearby Nyabise River.
The event was attended by many respectable people including Zaka North Member of Parliament (MP) Robson Mavenyengwa, Ward 3 Councillor; Alderman Cornelius Mapuranga, a representative of Chief Ndanga, Mbizvo village head Ndume Mbizvo, Chimedza Primary School head Johanisi Mucheki, Chitonhora High School head Charles Magama and the school’s SDC.
Addressing the gathering, Mavenyengwa praised BancABC for showing commitment to the development of communities.
“There are many banks that have been making money out of our communities for a long time but they have never given back. I am happy to have a bank which has the welfare of the people at heart.
“There are 42 schools in Zaka North most of whom lack reliable sources of water. We urge this school to exploit this opportunity and start a thriving gardening project now that they have water close by. BancABC is good because they don’t give you fish, they teach you how to fish; use the borehole to generate money for yourselves,” said Mavheneyengwa.
Alderman Mapuranga also hailed BancABC for helping to develop a community that yearns for opportunities.
“We stand for development and we welcome BancABC’s gesture of goodwill. This borehole will help not only these two schools but all surrounding communities with people who have been experiencing a hard time getting water,” said Alderman Mapuranga.
The councillor also revealed that many children had been fatally hit by cars while trying to cross the Ndanga – Jerera road to look for water.
Chief Ndanga, through his representative, said he was glad that BancABC had engaged the traditional leadership before initiating the project.
“When a project like this is undertaken with the blessings of the traditional leadership and with the necessary courtesy on our cultural values, you are bound to succeed,” said Chief Ndanga, in remarks that were echoed by village head Mbizvo.
BancABC Masvingo branch manager Goodman Mudzviti said the bank was conscious of the developmental needs of the communities.
“Ours is not exclusively a relentless pursuit for profits but an ethical business model underlined by the necessity to plough back to the communities that have sustained us for this long.
“There would be no bank without the communities and the people who open bank accounts or apply for credit with us. We look forward to a more fruitful working relationship,” said Mudzviti.
BancABC has been providing reliable credit lines to civil servants for a long time and its Construction Finance facility is open for schools to get money to build better classroom blocks and staff houses. The bank also has an Asset Finance facility which helps schools to buy buses, cars and information technology equipment.business

MASVINGO – Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and popular Zimdancehall artist Wilton Dobha have partnered musician Wellington Magura of Gutu for a command agriculture song.
Speaking to TellZim News, Magura said they came up with the song; ‘Command Agriculture’ to spread help publicise the command agriculture programme.
“We took it upon ourselves to further publicise the command agriculture program through music. As you might be aware, not all of us are interested in reading newspapers or watching television which are the major channels that have been publicising command agriculture. Our part was to appeal to music lovers on general aspects of the programme,” Magura said.
He said he was humbled for cooperation received from the office of the VP for the success of the project.
“We simply asked for permission to use his vice clips from rallies and feature his voice in our song. I was really humbled from the cooperation I received from his office and also how he humbled himself to work with a youthful group like us.
“We also made it clear that the command agriculture is a programme that Vice President Mnangagwa was given by President Robert Mugabe to implement. It’s not his personal programme as many think,” said Magura.intertainment, local, topnews

BIKITA – In support of government’s STEM initiative, Bikita Minerals last week stretched their generous hands and honoured their promise to refurbish and equip the Bikita Fashu High School science laboratory.
The latest gesture of goodwill adds to the previous textbook donation made by the mining company to the school last year.
The Bikita Fashu High School science laboratory now boasts state-of-the-art equipment purchased to the tune of thousands of US dollars.
Safety goggles, safety shoes, electronic microscopes, funnels, flasks, beakers, acid resist gloves, hot plates, a fridge, experiment acids and a digital lab scale forms part of the equipment in the lab.
Speaking at the handover ceremony, Bikita Minerals Chief Executive Officer Grant Hudson said the donation is part of the company’s efforts to improve learning conditions in Bikita.
“Our focus is to make Bikita the driving force in education. We will do all we can to help schools in this district. I have also made it a personal commitment that I should give these pupils all equipment needed so that they can do better in science than I did,” Hudson said.
The lab, which Bikita Minerals built back in the 1990s, now serves as a symbol of the company’s commitment to the advancement of science education in the district.
Bikita District Schools Inspector (DSI) Zakaria Makopa said the donation has helped bridge the technology gaps in Bikita’s drive to fully embrace STEM.
“Thank you for this great job. Through this development, science has been made easier. As a ministry, we are delighted by this special gift because most of our schools lack such facilities. We also do not forget the school feeding scheme which is benefitting primary schools in Bikita,” Makopa said.
Bikita Fashu school head Hapias Madzivo said he believed the school was destined for something greater especially if Hudson remains with the company.
“When I first met Hudson, we informally discussed the challenges at the school not knowing it will lead to a lot coming our way. Besides this building and equipment, we received many textbooks from Bikita Minerals.
“We can now boast of being the only school in the province with such state-of-the-art equipment, thanks to that relationship,” Madzivo said.
Chief Chiwara, born Reuben Mupasi, who came as a parent, said local traditional leaders should thank the ancestors for having a caring company in their land.
“We have a lot to be proud of because of this mine. Our land is really blessed with a company which takes cares of our needs. It is not a secret that most mining companies are only exploit resources and give back nothing to the communities but Bikita Minerals has proved to be a different case altogether,” Chief Chiwara said.education
